Struggling with post op diet and calorie restriction.
BelleOfBatonRouge posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have been feeling frustrated, and I figured I would share with others who may have experienced it or currently feel this way. I was sleeved three weeks ago on 10-17. I am currently in a 4 week soft food stage- if I can mash it with a fork I’m allowed to have it. I have been slightly stretching what is and isn’t a soft food, and I worry I’m going down the wrong path. I am finding it very very frustrating to stay under 800 calories, but I don’t know if that’s because I am actually hungry or if it is all head hunger. I do feel like volume wise I am able to consume more that I should, or at least do it out of old habits. I also do occasion feel like a gnawing in my stomach, but I don’t know if that’s me being hungry or an ulcer (I’ve never had an ulcer and have had no issues with scid reflux, but I think that can sometimes be a sign?) Law school finals are in three weeks, and at this point during all past semesters I would be stress eating. It wasn’t healthy but god it was so much simpler. I do get around 80 grams of protein a day (sometimes more, sometimes less but never less than 60), and I do struggle a bit with water- I usually end up right at the 60-64 oz mark for the day, but I know it would be good to get more. Ultimately, I think my biggest battle is that I love to munch. I can’t wait until I can crunch into some freshly sliced cucumber with a tablespoon of Greek yogurt. I meet with the nutritionist on november 19 and I know that will help. I also will be seeing a therapist starting next week, because it’s free through my school so why not? In the mean time, I am scared and frustrated. I think week 3 has been the hardest, even compared to the immediate post op recovery of week 1. -
I am only about 3 months out bag. When I feel panicked about my choices or any guilt I just go back to the liquid diet, the premier protein, yogurt, for a couple days. Of course I am only 3 months out and it’s more in my head that feeling of guilt then me actually doing bad. Maybe that will help you.

My "go to" breakfast is Skyr (like greek yogurt, only less sugar) with a little granola and chia seeds. On weekends, I'll change it up and have oatmeal or shredded wheat for breakfast. Fresh fruits or veggies every day help to get in fiber, but I still can't eat a lot of them. 1 apple is more than enough for an entire meal and I sometimes have to split it into 2 meals/snacks. I eat beans or lentils whenever the opportunity arises. If I need a snack, I usually have a few nuts. That being said, I still feel like I'm a little deficient sometimes. I tried psyllium husk addition to smoothies or yogurt but because I eat so slow, it turns into a thick goo that I'm not terribly exited about eating. So, I found SF fiber gummies, which I usually take once a day. They're only 5% of daily fiber needs, but they make me feel like I'm at least making an effort. Plus, they feel like an after dinner treat. Been fortunate, I haven't really had issues with constipation. So, I guess I must be doing something right.

How much Protein were you hitting right after post-op?
FluffyChix replied to vsgnewbie77's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can use decaf tea too. Just make sure your flavor combo works! I do like blueberry tea with vanilla Isopure and blueberries and spinach, or other Celestial Seasonings flavors. You just have to be sure everything is very well blended so you don't inadvertently get seeds that might still irritate you. I really liked peach tea blended with frozen peaches, yogurt, spinach, avo, etc. lol. or Premier peaches and cream shaken with green decaff or peach tea over ice is phenomenal! -

Hahahaha! I do think diluting them makes them go down easy, but I never had issues drinking anything liquid. Also if you hate prepared drinks, maybe consider making your own. You don't even have to use protein powder. You can use things like yogurt, cottage cheese, Fairlife FF milk. It will all add up. Add peanut butter powder, spinach, blueberries, avocado for creaminess--even walnuts and things. Then blend the crap out of it until it's TOTALLY smooth and homogenous. You thin it down with Fairlife FF milk until it's a drinkable comfortable consistency for your new anatomy. Then you control how sweet it is. I use liquid stevia and mine are way less sweet. One of my faves was Bananas and Cream (Isopure powder) mixed with decaff coffee blended with a bit of ice for a Cocomo Joe Frapp. I also loved Premier Protein Bananas and Cream shaken with decaff and served over ice. Really cut the sweetness and was liquid like iced coffee. But some do not tolerate the Whey Concentrate from Premier. -
11 weeks post-op, solid food not easy
FluffyChix replied to MassMom's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Also staying fully hydrated helps you pass things through your pouch and makes it "less sticky-ish." That was from Dr. Alvarez the bariatric surgeon. If you are at all dehydrated, it may take a couple of days to really replenish your fluid levels. To me, it makes all the diff in how I handle food and post prandial nausea. Also, if you're having issues with protein, use meat lube (low fat, low cal, low carb gravies, soupy stewpy things like your chili and for god's sake, don't overcook eggs! LOL.) Also soft cooked white flaky mild fish is usually pretty easy for most people, as can be soft scrambled eggs with yogurt or lite sour cream mixed in to make them creamy. Beans and cheese, or canned beans mashed with some yogurt or cheese go down easy. If it were me, I'd stay away from the obvious slider culprits. You're losing well now, but that habit is hard to shake and your weight loss WILL level off and you could potentially stall out. Sorry you are struggling. -
I can relate big time. We are on the same timeline, my DR advises that i do two week full liquid. Its tough drinking broth, protein shakes and greek yogurt on a cycle. I am looking forward to Wednesday this week, as i move onto the puree. To keep me focused I remember why I choose surgery as a weight loss option, also the sure knowledge that I am eliminating so many health ailments. I know it’s tough but hang in there. This too shall pass. Good luck on your journey.

@Yvonne47 My team gave me a list of soft foods to try after my post-op visit and suggested I work my way down it. Eggs were not at the top of the list, and even working up to them, the first time I had them they settled pretty heavily. (I wasn't sick, but I wasn't in a hurry to eat more eggs that week, either.) I had cottage cheese, ricotta, yogurt, and refried beans before eggs. Really moist tuna salad (made with plain yogurt instead of mayo and squished up very thoroughly with a fork) also settled better, for me. But I don't ever do runny yolks or any of that--if you do, eggs might go better for you, sooner, than they went for me. Anyway, good luck at your post-op visit!

I can totally relate to this. However my surgeon said to take it slow and I would know when I could move to the "mushie/pureed" stage. Well. I thought I was good to go because like you I wanted to chew something SO badly. But no, My stomach was not ready. Take it slow. I am almost 2 weeks post op and I've had some pureed foods but mostly sticking to yogurt and broth still. Everything else is hard to get down and hurts. Good luck!!!!!

Honestly when I wake up in the morning I grab a vitamin water zero and take all my meds . Then I head to the gym for about 90 min . Come home and either have a yogurt or scrambled egg . That’s pretty much my morning routine right now

Not sure I can answer the question about why there is so much cheese out there. Personally, I love it and it is a staple in my diet. I always have sticks of cheese in my refrigerator and if I get tired of yogurt for breakfast will switch it up and have cottage cheese. Never had an issue with constipation. If you're looking for soft food, non-cheese, substitutes that carry a healthy punch of protein, my go-to is hummus. There are lots of variations that you can find in stores, but I like it best when it's simple and homemade. Another option is refried beans. They can be a little bland, so I spice them up with chili powder and a little sour cream.

I had my surgery 10/15 so I will be on soft foods for Thanksgiving. I'm going to my aunt's house and I told her about my surgery because she's nice and non judgemental. I may eat a yogurt, whatever, I don't really care what I eat, I just want to see her. I'm having a weird experience today. This is the start of my week 4 and I feel very cold and weak. Like maybe I am in ketosis or need more calories? I'm having some Isopure water now.

No haven't had any heart burn thank God. I'm just starting to make shakes with Greek yogurt and ice and extracts a little better way to get down the shakes with my nutri bullet.

I was sleeved on October 30 2018, 6 days ago from today. The sounds my stomach is making woke me up from a deep sleep this morning and I actually felt hungry! I ran downstairs and grabbed a plain Greek yogurt. I took 2 small spoonfuls and my belly went silent. Is this going to happen everyday? The sounds are scary!

My favorites are Broad Beans (seasoned) , seasoned dried chick peas and chick pea puffs are insanely good and give me the feeling of eating chips /Cheetos :) Also- sf popsicles, turkey Jerky, oikos triple zero yogurt and string cheese are go to regulars! Post Surgery Tastebuds Changes: tell me yours
Vegasurvivor replied to GeTnBackuP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm six months post sleeve. Tastes definitely changed. After bland liquid diet, funnel diet, soft food stage ect. And I would also like to mention I stayed in those phases a little longer just to be on the safe side....my taste buds have definately changed. Use to love tuna before surgery, now post surgery has super strong fishy taste to me. Love fruit now since its sweet and juicy. Watermelon being my fav food!! Frozen, canned or processed foods turn me off, have no desire to eat. Have no desire or cravings to ever go thru a drive thru again. Hope that lasts for quite sometime. Tried one bite of pasta. Had weird sponge flavorless texture, not for me. Bread is the same. I eat yogurt everyday and love flavors I did not before. Use to absolutely hate carrots and now love the crunch and can eat them every day. My tastes have definitely changed and I believe its from the initial change of diet post surgery. So happy for the changes! I'm so blessed to have met my surgeon who made it all possible and affordable. Love love blossom barriatrics in las Vegas!! Sent from my Z970 using Tapatalk -
When can I start swallowing capsules?
ElectricBoogaloo replied to April Dawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check with your team, experiences shared here may not align with your team's wishes. For example at my first week follow-up, my surgeon said I no longer have to sprinkle omeprazole on a spoonful of yogurt, but could swallow whole and I didn't have to cut tablets in half, while @Lynnlovesthebeach is okayed at 6 weeks. Do you mix them into the entire container of yogurt, applesauce? If yes, don't do that!! 😊😁 For the omeprazole, I dipped a spoon in the yogurt, carefully poured it all on the yogurt on the spoon and swallowed the entire dose at once. The nurses mixed the meds in the jello and it was difficult to get it all in because it was disgusting. Yuck. -
String cheese, white cheddar baby bels, bold salt and vinegar almonds, Atkins nut rolls, Atkins coconut bars, hard boiled eggs, salami, avocado, refried beans and cheese, nut butters, coconut chips, one birthday cake bars (yummy), one maple glazed protein bars also amazing, Greek yogurt and if I'm craving carbs a dill pickle kills the craving every time.

When can I start swallowing capsules?
MIZ60 replied to April Dawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take the same vitamins and my PA told me at my two week check up that it was okay to just swallow them. Opening them and putting in a bite of yogurt was NASTY so I feel your pain. -
Since we are on the same plan, I know you should be on full liquids. Also includes yogurt, applesauce, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, pureed fruits and veggies, sugar free pudding and gelatin. Our guide also says to work your way from 3 to 5 ounces in one sitting. Hope this helps. Congratulations on your surgery!

You have given me hope! I was sleeved 10/22 and still nada for me. I'm taking colace and benefiber in my water. Going to try miralax tomorrow. And thinking I will up the yogurt and cut out the cheese lol

When can I start swallowing capsules?
April Dawn posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 3 capsules that I have to take. I have been told to empty the contents into something like yogurt. I have tried yogurt, applesauce, and today V8. I am really struggling to get these down. Gagging with each swallow. I'm 5 days post op and just want to swallow these meds. The largest is the Bariatric Advantage vitamins with iron. When did you all start swallowing pills that are larger than MnMs? Any advise on how to get the powder down?
