  1. I'm wondering if I did some harm to my stomach I pick up 4 books at my college bookstore and I walked with them about 10 minutes to my car and I realize my right side of my stomach hurts horrible. Any way I bend down or twist right it's a kinda sharp stinging pain there, I'm almost 3 weeks postop what should I do? I see the surgeon in 4 days
  2. Consider yourself lucky... I came home from the hospital almost 10 pounds heavier than when I went in. IV fluid did me in... It took almost a week for me to lose it.... Be patient, the weight will come off

    Pre op weight loss?

I'm on my medically supervised diet and it's 1200 calories a day. I follow it to the letter-no cheating. It's almost 10 weeks and I'm down 40 lbs. if I lose more than 12 more in the next two and a half weeks I may be denied for surgery because my bmi will be too low!

    what cant u eat anymore????

Ugh, I am having serious problems lately. I haven't had a fill since the first part of May. I was suppose to be at 7 cc's in a 10 cc band. I used to be able to eat almost anything, up until about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Then I go sick and was in bed for two days and didn't eat much. Now I am having trouble eating a lot of things. Right now, popcorn, chips, crackers, crunchy Cereal, ice cream, pudding, coffee all go down just fine. But bread, meat, eggs, Pasta, rice, veggies all get stuck. I am at the end of my rope. I don't know what to do. I am even having problems eating thick oatmeal. I don't know what has changed.

Guess what I saw this morning

OMG fabulous girl! Congrats! 10 lbs away for me....I can't wait to join you
  6. @@Sajijoma Was going to say the same thing. My process has taken almost 10 months! But don't let that discourage you. One day at a time and keep that motivation! You can do it!
  7. Thank you everyone! I attended the information session yesterday and I'm feeling really good about all of this. The timeline is going to depend on how long it takes to drop 10%, and I am concerned about that -- I've been trying to lose 10% since 1995, only to continually lose a few pounds, and then gain a few more... sigh. But I really want this. The tool this will give me I really believe will be my solution, and I want it to work.

Its on mondays @10. Keia I did too for a brief moment. But then I temembered all the times I tried and failed to lose my 100+ lbs on my own. But it didn't stop me from rejoicing as crying with them while watching.

    Am I eating too much?

I agree with Threetimesacharm. After surgery they start you out at 2 ounces per meal and over the next year and a half that slowly increases to 8. The most important things after RNY gastric bypass surgery is to meet the daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body will convert the store energy in your fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Exercise is equally important. You should be walking 30 minutes per day, or equivalent. The weight loss phase after surgery is relatively short and then you will gradually slide into the maintenance phase. Weight loss after surgery is achieved by meal volume control. If you want to maximize the weight loss achieved during the weight loss phase, you need to limit the volume of your meals. It is important to consume protein during the weight loss phase because your body will be damaged without it. Normally this is done using protein supplements such as Protein shakes. Since your meal volume is so small at the beginning there is no way to achieve your protein requirement without using supplements. The protein supplements is a separate requirement than the meal volume requirement. In other words it doesn't count against your total volume limit. So when you drink a Protein shake, it is not considered a meal. The liquid portion of the protein shake counts towards meeting your daily fluid requirement, the protein grams count towards your daily protein requirement but it doesn't count towards your meal limit. Since you are mixing in the protein powder into your meal, it seems like it is a little hard to figure meal volume. So what I see is 9 A.M. meal (only 1/2 your meal volume requirement) 10 A.M. protein (good) 12:30 A.M. meal (2-3 ounces over your meal volume requirement) 3:30 P.M. protein (good, in the form of milk) 4:30 P.M. meal (3 ounces over your meal volume requirement) 6:00 P.M. meal (this is interesting because this could be considered your fourth meal of the day. So overall during the day you have exceeded your meal volume requirement by 8-9 ounces.)

    Finally !!! Approval from Cigna

I am currently doing my 6 month physician supervised diet. You need to see your doctor before you start the diet and each month during it for documentation. Make sure they write down that this is why you saw them. The insurance will want to see all vitals and your weight on the paperwork too. At the end you will submit seven visits to your insurance. Cigna paid for my Psych Eval and my Nutritionist visit. The nutritionist is complicated though, they have to bill it a certain way for them to pay for it though. I had a problem at first and when I explained that it was a prerequisit for the surgery they approved it. Don't let the customer service people throw you off track. I have called them a dozen times to verify my insurance to make sure things are covered and that I am doing this right and each time I call I get a different answer. So you need to ask for their policy for bariatric surgery in writing and read it yourself. As far as weight loss during the diet. My surgeon requires us to lose 10% before surgery so that is my goal during this diet. I have asked every person I have spoken to at the sugeon's office and the nutritionists office and they all have said that even if you lose during your diet the insurance will look at your starting weight and BMI from your first surgeon's visit. Some insurances even require you to lose or they won't approve you. I don't think cigna has they rule though. Good Luck all!!!

    Hi there!

I joined my local gym and waddled in there all 265 lbs of me. I was embarrassed but I knew I needed to be there. I would swim for 30 minutes. Slow laps of course. Eventually I was up to walking 4 miles on the lap course. The compliments I recieved from people who had noticed me big and then becoming smaller and smaller made the embarrassment so worth it. So I started in a size 26 swimsuit and finished my membership in a size 10 tanktini. When I started maintanance I had to cut my mega exercise back to 2 miles a day and so I quit my membership . Good luck, edie

    5 years out

I have my five-year anniversary in four days!! doing well. Initially got down to into the 130s but gained 15-20 lbs in year 3 (10 of which I was OK with - with my large frame and musculature, 130s was too light for me). I stabilized at 150 for a couple of years, but last fall I was abroad for a month, then came back in time of the holidays, and then the pandemic hit, so I managed to get up to 160. I'm working on getting back down to 150 as that's where I feel best. It's happening but S-L-O-W going. Who knew how hard it would be to lose a measly 10 lbs? anyway, overall it's been a great success and I'd do it over again 1000 times... Shouldn't have waited so long to take the plunge!

NOT STAYING ON 6 MONTH DIET

I am in the same exact place as you. I keep losing and gaining the same 5 lbs. I hate going to my doctor and getting weighed because I know she'll be disappointed. I'm 4 months in my 6 month diet. It's so hard. What happened last time was I was on my period when I went in and of course we gain water weight during that time. I told her I was a few pounds lighter than what the scale revealed which i actually was. She was okay with that and recorded the weight I told her I was. She then said "well I guess every time you come in from now on, you'll probably will be on your period and we as women gain 2-10 lbs on our periods so just keep me posted on your actual weight". So I hope I'm on my period again so I can just give her a number and she'll record that for the sake of the diet. My insurance representative said they arent interested in how much weight I lose or dont lose they want to see if I'm willing to be diligent about going to the doctor on a regular basis. I understand the reasoning behind the 6 month diets but it's also very hard. I'd much rather have to be made to go to a class that actually helped with my mental issues with food because diets for me dont work, if they did I wouldnt be hitting almost 300 pounds. Anyway, I hope it works out for you!

    October 22

I'm trying to find a 10/22 buddy, and I'm having no success at tracking down anyone from the October list. If anyone is interested, and you know how ( cause I clearly don't ) send me a private message and we can go from there. Six days and we'll be on the road to "after"!

    October 30!

I'm scheduled to be there at 10 not sure when I'll officially be under and stuff. I think I'm packed? The diet still sucks. My hospital is 30 - 45 minutes away. I hope I'm ready! Not nervous not anything. Still hasn't hit me!

No Bowel Movements 7 days post-op

It's usually that first BM that can take quite a while before you go. For me I went 10 days without one then after that it was probably every 3 days. I am 10 months post op and still have constipation issues. Just make sure you get your liquids in, it will definitely help. Also, my doctoral me use a dulcolax suppository which will help you go very quickly. Just make sure you talk to them first.
  18. I was sleeved on 1/26. I went for a follow up yesterday, and I've lost 15 pounds!! I am extremely happy with the results so far. I was taken off my high blood pressure medicine AND my acid reflux medicine! Very, very awesome things have happened... I was the fifth person in my family to have WLS. All of them had Gastric Bypass, but I had VSG because of my tendency to make kidney stones. My uncle was my surgeon, so I went into surgery not afraid at all. Everything went great- no sickness in the hospital, incisions are looking amazing, support from my family and friends is plentiful... So excited. I am going back to the gym tomorrow. I guess i'll just start with some walking on the treadmill. I will go back to work on Friday... so excited to see my clients I have managed to keep up with my classes, as I am a full time student. Everything is just going so great for me. I am having problems with my Protein intake. The only Protein shake i've found that I can tolerate is the Atkins shakes- more specifically, the Espresso kind! By the way, I don't see how the flavorless Protein powder is flavorless!! I am doing Oikos yogurt, scrambled eggs, the occasional shake, though it's hard to get down, and whatever else protein I can scrounge up. My surgeon also told me I need to drink more liquids, but I feel like I drink constantly! I guess it'll get easier day by day? I'm only 19 years old, by the way. I am hoping to find more people my age around these forums because I feel kind of alone in that sense. I do love everyone, though And just outta curiousity... does anyone else feel like they eat ALL the time? I feel like i'm doing wrong by eating so often, but I guess the portion size is the cause of that?

Weak and no energy on preop diet

Guys, my nurse told me that pre-op diet would make me thankful for my band, and I want to tell you she was totally right. The 10 days before the bend were pure hell, since the band it has been a total and utter blessing. Focus on what you are working for, you CAN do it.
  20. Hello Everyone and Happy Friday! I had surgery on 9/12. Felt okay after surgery and tried to go back to work on Monday, too soon for me. Tuesday and Wednesday at work was really difficult and I was exhausted! Yesterday was better and today I feel great! No more gas and just mild discomfort around the port. I am still not hungry. I moved to thicker liquids yesterday and thought I really wanted egg drop Soup. I tried it but it just did not taste good to me...strange. The best part is that I have lost 20 pounds including 10 days of pre-op diet. I am feeling so positive about the future! Having lunch at school with my daughter today (or watching her have lunch) and then off to the gym for some treadmill time. I am so happy to have found this forum so I can learn from everyone. I am scheduled for my first fill on October 11th. Did anyone else have a fill just 4 weeks pre-op? How are the other September bandsters doing? Sorry about the title, too early for spelling!
  21. So true! I found a scrap piece of paper with all my surgery paperwork where I computed my losses based on 'statistics'! Sooo funny to read afterwards! I'm thrilled to lose an average of 10 lbs. a month, by my calculations Pre-op I should almost be at goal! I'm almost out of the 200's so I'm sure as I get closer to my goal my loss will really slow down. But my math cracked me up percentages, division.. I didn't work that hard in math class!
  22. Hello everyone. I am Barb from Oregon. I have worked at the Good Samaritan Hospital(for 19 years) here in Portland that is the National Institute of Health's center for excellence for bariatric surgeries. We have insurance coverage for the bariatric surgeries. However, it only covers person over the age of 25. I joined this site to try to get help for my daughter who has decided she would like to have the surgery. Does anyone have words of advice for me on trying to get our insurance to cover her surgery? I will try to appeal approach and have already emailed our VP. I heard there was a lawyer out there that works for the lap banding manufactor that helps people who have insurance problems. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks alot! Barb

Need help to start losing again

Hi, I am only 10 weeks post-op, but from what I understand there is no finish line. Everyday will challenge you. I use a food scale and weight out my portions of food for the day. I do not eat anything with more that 12grams of sugar per serving, even though I know I can tolerate more than that. I work out 6 days a week. (a mix of weights and cardio) I hired a personal trainer. I am training for two 5K races. I joined the Obesity Action Coalition. I have surrounded myself with friends and family that support my new lifestyle. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on, that I think will help me on this new journey. I talk to my dietician weekly, and I go to all of my follow up appointments. I joined two support groups. I say daily affirmations to myself when I wake up. I TRY to eat 100 grams of Protein a day. I know 10 weeks is nothing compared to the rest of my life, but so far these are the things that I have done and continue to do to make each day successful. Hope this helps!!

Back to Work - Strenuous job

I would think you should be ok. I have a very physical job too. I am an LVT, and I am constantly picking up dogs and bending down etc. I avoided lifting any animals over 20lbs in the beginning. By week 3, I believe it was, I was back lifting over 60 lb animals and carrying them to the scale, into x-ray etc. with no problem. At my 10 day post op check I asked when it was ok to do weights and stuff, and they said 2 moreweeks, so I waited til then (well almost0. But I think you should be ok.
