What I wish i knew before I had surgery
Flab-U-Less Forever replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry you've had such bad GERD. I suffer from it too now which is why I told my surgeon that I wanted the bypass instead of the sleeve. This forum is where I found out about the prevalence of GERD worsening after sleeve. Good luck with your revision! -
Yes we did! The opportunity arose for us to go together and we decided to take it. Initially the better half was having the bypass but settled on the sleeve. I am amazed at the doctor and staff in Turkey and have nothing but admiration for them - ours especially. Fears of travelling to another country were totally unfounded and we were cared for very well. Now the hard work begins! Lots to learn - Not least how big a glass is for a glass of milk! Thanks for the welcome

Revision from VSG to RNY with hernia repair
shriner37 replied to shriner37's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I don't know. In 2015 I was self pay as my company insurance didn't cover bariatric surgery. I'm now retired and the ACA plan I have also doesn't cover anything related to bariatric surgery so if GERD was a side effect of the first surgery they wouldn't likely cover it. I think they will cover the hernia repair but not the bypass, so there might be some partial coverage. -
Day After Reversion from RSG to Bypass
wdbass posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had surgery 2 days ago, which went better than expected. Mine was done primarily for GERD, but also because my weight was going up. My weight when I left for the hospital on Monday was 254. When I got on the scale this morning it was 264! I know this is all due to fluids taken at the hospital, but I was still surprised by how much! Any thought on how long it will take to lose this? -
New here, in pre-op phase.
lizonaplane replied to Sissylo85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I read somewhere maybe on these message boards? That loop DS can cause really foul smelling poop and I think you need to have 100 g of protein a day. I would verify these things with your surgical team, but if you haven't considered these things, be aware. There is a whole forum here on loop DS. I had sleeve. I was very worried because I thought I had GERD, but I haven't had any issues. Make sure your current medications won't be affected by the loop DS. I take a lot of meds for bipolar disorder so I was recommended sleeve over bypass so it wouldn't affect absorption. I'm not sure if loop DS would have that issue. Another thing to consider is that loop DS is a newer, less researched surgery, although, the same could have been said of sleeve ten years ago! -
Revision from sleeve to bypass
newsam1154 replied to lions92's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am in the process of getting a surgery date for revision, sleeve to bypass - & this time around I feel a bit more scared than I did previously with my first surgery. I am worried of complications after surgery, did anyone run into any crazy complications after their revision? -
5 mths post op- can’t eat More than 2 bites
Fadingawayindc replied to breezylosesit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Im having exactly the same problem. I had my bypass in August and haven't been able to eat more than 2 bites of food or sips of liquid. I've lost 110lbs most of my hair and basically have become a hermit. My doctor insists it's my fault that im just eating to fast or the "wrong foods" and not following the nutritionists recommended diet and is now suggesting putting me on a feeding tube. I don't want to go on the feeding tube but I'm afraid it may be my only option to avoid complete malnutrition. -
Ask which is best for you , I went to cut Thermopylae and there was only one having the bypass in 2010 I had the sleeve had a lot of problems health wise and now had the bypass in August 23rd 2021 this is the best thing I've ever done

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Kimmysu replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don't get discouraged. I had my surgery on November 8th and I'm basically in the same situation. My saving grace is orange juice without the sugar. For some reason I'm able to drink more of that than the water. In fact water taste so nasty to me now and it hurts even when I take a gulp. Also, pretty much anything I eat gives me the foamies (I learned what that was from this site My Doctor just said to hang in there and don't worry about my food intake, but to try and least get some protein in. So, I take really small bites of a protien bar at a time and beef sticks. -
Well done that's fantastic I'm 5 months out and haven't been weighed since November I was 45lb out then not sure wont have scales in the house so waiting to see Dietician or doctor which ever comes first I know I've lost more because all my clothes are to big lol oh well I'll have to buy some new ones good luck with the skin removal let us know how it goes

I'm only recently bypassed, but I had bad GERD going into surgery, and it's under control post-surgery. Not even a whiff of it. But what has been an issue is the stomach acid causing ulcers at the stoma between my reduced stomach and new intestine join. So I'm on 40mg of Pantoprazole for at least 6 months, with the likelihood of having to take it longer because even with the drug, I still have the odd attack of pain. Early days in the grand scheme of things, but ulcers are a risk even when the reflux is gone. Birth control pills never agreed with me either, so I've had excellent luck with the Mirena IUD. It's an unpleasant ride having it installed (especially if, like me, you've never given birth), but mercifully not a long procedure.

Wow! Your everything sure has a lot of stuff in it! JK those are all legitimate questions & things we all worry about pre-op. Some things to take into consideration is your starting weight & your age. The more you have to loose, the more excess skin you will have. If you are older, it might be harder for you to tone things up. The main thing is finding an exercise thing you can stick with! For me that has been Pilates. But even after doing Pilates 369 times I still have bat wings. I have always had a “poofy” stomach no matter how much I weigh, even at 100 pounds in my early 20’s. I would love to have a tummy tuck, but someone would have to die for that to happen so I will go without one. My daughter has that implant thing in her arm. She had a bypass just over 3 years ago (when she was 22) & has lost over 150. She has done great. I had a bypass to correct a failed surgery I had 12 years prior to control GERD that had failed. Because of this I have to take a Previcid for the rest of my life. As long as I don’t over eat (more then 3oz) & I don’t have spicy food the GERD stays under control. Today we ate lunch at a new place. But my husband & I both got heartburn! So we won’t be eating there again!

Hello, I was just wondering something. Anyone with PCOS, GERD, FATTY LIVER all or some of these conditions, what is the most weight that you guys have lost with the gastric bypass? And for anyone who's had the bypass how did you guys prevent excess skin and, did you guys require surgery to fix the excess skin on your body such as: A BBL, TUMMY TUCK, BREAST AUGUMATAION? Hopefully, my surgery date will be in April/May because I have to get an endoscopy and I'm super excited but nervous at the same time about my surgery. And my main concern is I had an allergic reaction to my birth control in 2019 so I was just wondering what type of conceperative do guys use to prevent pregnancy without birth control do you guys use the depicote, IUD?

Hoi Brien! 😊

Anyone in MINNESOTA?
suzannethemom replied to suzannethemom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have severe GERD also, which is why I chose RNY gastric bypass. I don’t have a surgery date yet. I have 5 appointments scheduled in the next two weeks (dietitian, exercise PT, Psych eval, upper GI). You’re so lucky to get the Mayo Clinic. I’m nervous that as I’m getting all these important steps done, the hospital decides to pause elective surgeries. I just heard that Allina canceled WLS for three months! -
Another endoscopy yesterday, can hardly wait until March 1
gabbykittyvsg posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had another endoscopy yesterday and the GERD hasn't gotten any better. At least the 2 ulcers have healed though. The doctor who did the scope yesterday recommends surgical intervention for the GERD. I can't expect her to know my medical history so she probably doesn't know surgery is already scheduled for March 1st. Hiatal hernia repair and revision of sleeve to bypass. 30 days!! Anyone's primary doctor was against the operation?
gabbykittyvsg replied to Starky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The primary doc I had at the time of my vsg was totally against it, at first but wasn't supportive either. I saw her in the hallway at the hospital the day after surgery and she said"you know you didn't really need the surgery". I'm not sure what my current primary thinks about my upcoming surgery but I'll find out when I go in for my pre-op physical in 2 weeks. This surgery (conversion to bypass) is necessary because of damage done by reflux so she can't really say much. I had another endoscopy done yesterday and the report noted the need for surgical intervention to fix the reflux. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app -
What I wish i knew before I had surgery
gabbykittyvsg replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a sleeve 7 years ago and wish I would have known about the high prevalence of damage due to acid reflux after the sleeve. I now need to revise to bypass to stop the damage from getting worse. If you have any history at all of reflux, I'd be talking to your doctor about doing a bypass instead Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app -

9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(
Esi replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for this post, and for the replies! So timely. Congrats on the 65 pounds! I’ve lost about 80% of the excess weight (BMI now 27), and I’m wondering if this is the end of the line. Could I do more exercise, and eat even better? Yes and yes. Do I want to find sustainable practices for the rest of my life, and be content (not neurotic about food and exercise)? Yes also. I like what mini gastric bypass dude said, try something new and see how your body responds. However, it would need to be something that you could do from here on out, in order to maintain. I think being a bit on the heavier side is better than going up and down? -

One Year With Mini Gastric Bypass: My Journey, Thoughts, and Tips!
Jerald180 replied to a topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am 68 so that may be why he only bypassed 35”. Don’t think it’s a big issue. But seemed way less than the norm so I have been curious. When I go back for my 6 mos visit in June I plan on asking the surgeon. Thanks for you info. Very helpful and reassuring.
