  1. I replied on OH as well, but if you check this one first. 1) It's total B.S. about men being more successful long term with VSG. B.S. 2) Check out the OH revision forum, go back through about 5-8 pages and see just how many people are looking to revise their RNY because of 1) Regain 2) Complications with their pouch/stoma combination 3) Resolution with diabetes happens with the sleeve all the time. Here is a study for Type II Diabetes resolution with VSG and RNY http://www.springerlink.com/content/f135104x27461498 Here's another research link on Ghrelin Plasma levels for VSG vs. RNY, it specifically shows that VSG gives longer lower levels of Ghrelin (the hunger hormone) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18376181?ordinalpos=12&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum I have tons of research links, articles in my blog if you'd like to review them, along with my reasons for VSG instead of RNY for my revision from the band.
  2. At first I thought I wanted the gastric bypass. My husband was pushing for the band. After doing some online research.. I decided I didn't want my guts sliced and diced. With the sleeve the pyloric valve is preserved so no dumping syndrome which sounds awful! I am pretty sure I don't want to live the rest of my life in fear of that. I teach and I cannot leave my classroom anytime I feel like it ... well that is if I want all the kids to remain alive and want the classroom to be there when I get back. It seemed like the longer people had the band... the greater the chance of complications. With the sleeve, it seems like if there are going to be complications... they occur sooner rather than later. So no living in fear of complications. No adjustments, hunger decreased because gryhellin is decreased... at least for awhile... I am sure mother nature built in some back-up systems. It just seemed like the best choice for me. More pros for me than cons... Not everyone is the same though. Some people think dumping syndrome is great behavior modification. You have to choose what is best for you. Khy
  3. I'm calling doctors in the area to see which ones perform the sleeve. I came upon a local doctor's number and spoke with his nurse. She explained to me that this particular surgeon does know how to do the sleeve but really only performs Bands and Bypasses. He feels there is a higher risk of leaks with the sleeve. She went on to say that he would do a sleeve if I really wanted it. (No thanks) How true is this statement, if at all? Do leaks occur more frequently with the sleeve than the bypass? I then asked her if he over-sews the staple line and her response was, "Like I said, he prefers to do Bands and Bypasses". Things that make you go Hmmmm.... Needless to say, not gonna use him...
  4. You sound very strong. My year has been much like yours. I have learned to put my faith in God or whatever higher power you believe in. I have given up control and my life has become so uncomplicated. I had surgery on September 11, 2016 to repair a ventral hernia. It was supposed to be 2 1/2 hours long. 8 1/2 hrs later after I passed on the table and was brought back. I was told by the surgeon, she also had to revise my gastric bypass. One month after surgery my husband and I became homeless. We have been staying with friends since. I have learned to be grateful for all that I have. Every morning I am so grateful to be alive. You too will get through this. If you need someone to talk to you can message me. Sent from my LGLS675 using the BariatricPal App
  5. I've known my family physician for 20 years and he's the MD of my parents and my brother. He's the one who mentioned WLS, in passing the last time I saw him. Well today I had a follow up with him and I mentioned I was having the Lap Band and he was little annoyed with me. Firstly, before I had stated that I wanted the Lap Band, I told him I was considering WLS which he supported, but he wanted me to have Gastric Bypass. Faster weight lost and it's better for the morbidly obese... Crap, am I morbidly obese? He said the Lap Band are for those individuals who have under 100 pounds to lose... Really?.....So I brought out my research;)... His response: I've forgotten that you love to read.... After, he heard my arguments and my points, he then proceeded to tell me that I can have it done free in Quebec since our provincial insurance pays for it.... I found out this lately but there's a waiting list of 2-3 years...not interested..... He's upset with me because he does not know the MD, so I provided him the name and the phone number to call him, which I know he will never do, he's too busy.... However, he seemed a little irked with me, but, stated he hope I do well, but the failure rate is high... Sigh...I literally had to remind him with any WLS, failure is an option if you do not change your lifestyle, which he agreed, we then ended with if I'm planning to have kids and I realized that this man has been part of my family for too long, my mother is rubbing off on him... Anyways, I remind him not to say anything to my mother, which pissed him off further since, he mumbled he is a doctor and patient confidentiality.... But just to be sure.... So now I have more motivation... A Lil surprise for my MD at my 1 year check up;)

    San Diego Bandsters out there?

Well for all you San Diegeans . . . tonight (4-7) is Dr. Mueller's office support group meeting which is open to anyone. It's both bypass and lapband people . . . but a good group. I don't know the address of it . . . just know where it is behind Mary Birch hospital . . . across from the parking garage - the Rehab building . . . but you could call Dr. Mueller's office for the phone number for information!
  7. Hi All, I'm new to this forum and hoping to network with some great people for support. I am waiting for Insurance approval for VSG surgery with Dr. Mitchel Roslin. He has a practice in NYC at Lenox Hill Hospital but has recently opened a practice at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt Kisco , NY. I am wondering if there is anyone here on this forum who has Dr. Roslin as their surgeon and could give me some feedback as to their experience with him. I was orginally introduce to him on the ObesityHelp.com site when I was researching Gastric Bypass and was told about the DS. I did have a consult with him back in 09 and he suggested the 2 part (VSG then the switch) due to my BMI and hernia . I have a couple clearances to get and hopefully will be having within a few weeks. I would appreciate any feedback on Dr. Roslin as I have not seen many postings about him since I have returned to OH. Thanks for any input!!! Didi

Celebrating Women Weight Loss Surgery Heroes for Mother's Day

Thank you, Alex. I love patient success stories. It is so inspiring to see ordinary people doing extraordinary things! It is also worth noting that between these success stories, all of the different weight loss surgeries are covered. Sandi is a wonderful example of massive weight loss with the Lap-Band. Jassira was successful with the duodenal switch. Jen and Fabiola had gastric sleeve. Mikimi had the gastric bypass. And I tip my hat to each and every one of them, all living life fully now, and so very happy!!!

    Panniculectomy with large waist??

I had a 150 pound loss with my Lap Band, but never got to goal. And now I'm contemplating revision to RNY. I did have a tummy tuck 2 years ago. My surgeon was wonderful. She submitted to my insurance for a panniculectomy, but she said what I needed was a fleur de lis tummy tuck. So insurance approved the panniculectomy, but my surgeon did the fleur de lis, hernia repair and diastasis recti repair, and she didn't charge me extra. She is amazing. ❤️ One other note that I will add is I have a friend who was never a bariatric patient, but she had 4 kids and needed a tummy tuck, and her ob/gyn did the tummy tuck. She did not have good results at all and now regrets the decision. I would highly recommend having a plastic surgeon do your surgery. I think it's just a matter of finding the right surgeon in these situations.
  12. Good morning CynthiaK. I watched all of his videos and he gets great reviews!!!! If I were you, I may think of taking a shuttle to the airport and then one home as well. That is if you don't find someone else to take you. My insurance covers the sleeve, but makes me go through a 3 month medically supervised diet program. I started that on Friday, so by early May we will submit my paperwork to BCBS Federal and once we get approval, we will schedual the surgery. We always go to teh beach in early June so I am trying to figure out when to have it, before or after. I feel we are making the right decision. Did you consider the Gastric bypass? I did, but, something about my intestines being re-routed is terrifying to me. I know it is the best in terms of success but, I don't like the possible side effects of the malabsorption..etc.....Do you have any co-morbidities? Well, I think you should go to your party and have some fun! How is the weather in TX? Cold and rainy up here in Nashville. Have a wonderful day!!!!! H

Is there a definiteve band vs. vsg thread?

Hi Wheetsin! No I don't think there is one thread that covers all the differences but there are numerous threads regarding the Band Vs Sleeve. I was revised from my band in September... and for me anyway my experience has been far greater than my band. IMO, the Sleeve is far superior. Good luck!
  14. You can lose as much weight with the sleeve as with bypass. Because you are a big guy, it will take time for the weight to come off and that time will help you learn new eating habits. Bypass malabsorption only lasts for 18-24 months and bypass patients who have relied on malabsorption to lose their weight are up the proverbial creek, plus they have malnutrition issues forever. There's a guy on Obesity Help who has lost 350 lbs with the sleeve. I think your surgeon gave you very good advice in recommending VSG. However, I am a strong advocate in people getting the surgery they think is right for them and if you feel that you would do better with a bypass, talk to your surgeon again.

    Doctor Recommends Sleeve

I do know that you do have the option to have Bypass after you have had the Sleeve if you are not satisfied. You haven't shut the door on that option for good.
  16. with the sleeve, NO medication is off limits. You CAN take anyting. It is the bypass that you are not allowed to take things. Kelly
  17. My Dr. suggested bypass as well but I immediately told him that was not for me. At that time he looked at me and said ok we will do the band but your weight loss is going to be very slow. I told him I wanted to lose 48 lbs the first year he said that was doable but probably not much more(I don't think he wanted me to think I could shed weight as fast as everyone else. Which I already knew....I am an aerobics instructor, bicycler, do triathlons, and ran a 1/2 marathon 6months before I had surgery. I know it takes a miracle for me to lose weight. Anyways I am only down 37 lbs since Dec but also down 23 inches. When I get down my Mom says....when was the last time you were able to lose 37 lbs and keep it off? That kind of puts things back in perspective for me. So...even though the weight loss is slow it is still weight loss....hang in there you will be thinner before you know it :tt2:
  18. I also have PCOS, type II diabetes, and low thyroid. Both my Surgeon and Endocrinologist support my getting the band. I was warned ahead of time that I might be a slower loser opting for the band over other weight loss methods. I was not at a point in my life where I considered bypass surgery. The only surgery that I wanted was the band. I have only had two fills so far (third is scheduled for this afternoon) and I have lost a total of 46-lbs in about 4 months. I am not restricted as of yet and have lost the weight due to sheer willpower. I am hoping that the next couple of fills will help me out a bit! Please have patience with the process. PCOS will definitely slow down your weight loss but that doesn't mean that we won't eventually get there! I too took Metformin and Januvia prior to surgery. Immediately before surgery I went off both medicines...under the guidance of my Endo. Since the surgery my 2-hour after meal sugars readings are great, but my morning fasting number has begun to creep up. She has put me back on the Januvia which I take before I go to bed. This has made a great difference in my morning fasting numbers. Talk to your Endo and see what he/she recommends.
  19. If you are referring to insurance, I didn't have either surgery for weight loss so BMI was not even considered. I had some upper GI issues. I have lost weight, but really didn't need to. Had I not had this RNY, it would have been likely that in the future I may have gotten esophageal cancer because my acid was so out of control. Also I had an area on my esophagus that was so thin from acid damage, it would have probably ruptured in the near future, so he had to repair that when he got in there before he did the bypass. My pouch is smaller than normal because of the repair so the restiction is much greater than the sleeve restriction. But everything is going great. Never had any pain or any nausea, and I am on all food now and no issues. No regrets!

    Unsupportive mother :(

I will only say that mothers always worry about their babies no matter what!! Mom was afraid for me to have WLS both times--I considered both surgeries lifesaving. The first surgery was gastric bypass 10 yrs ago that began failing me about 5 years ago. It took all this time to get OKd for revision to sleeve. I just think you need to be headstrong in doing surgery for YOU and YOUR HEALTH. Then once you have surgery, education about your new lifestyle, nutritional needs, etc. is in order--be the proof in the pudding for them and their doubts. If they see your efforts openly, my guess is they will be grumbling under their breath, "Why didn't I believe her???" Fear and doubt does strange things to people--typically those we are closest to--namely, our moms!! Good luck with everything, and I will be praying for good things happening with your surgery and your family. :DRonda
  21. I am being sleeved tomorrow with no intention whatsoever to have it switched to a bypass. Chrohn's disease runs in my family and so it is not a recommended procedure for me. I would like to see what the people mentioned at Obesity help have to say. I had concerns with how big I am and getting this done with my BMI being higher than most people I have read stories from. I will go take a look on OH. Thanks.
  22. Someone at my job commented to me yesterday, my first day back after the surgery, he said this: Make sure you don't become addicted to something else. A friend of my wife was a food addict, had a gastric bypass, and is now addicted to alcohol. Turned out she had an addictive personality that was not discovered in her psych profile. I was stunned, and realized that now, everyone will be full of advice, good, bad or weird, and I have to take it as it comes. As long as you are true to yourself and sticking to your goals, things will change if you want them to.

    Aetna still pending!!!

Hi @texasbutrphly ! How did things turn out for your regarding your revision? I am going through the revision process with Aetna myself for sleeve to rny.
  24. I also has the sleeve done 3/2015, lost 155 and gained back 40. I went back to my Dr because of gerd and no restrictions when eating since 3 months post op. I have cigna, they approved and I am now waiting on the dr office to schedule the surgery. I would love to find out what the average weight loss is for sleeve to bypass revision....
  25. I had the gastric sleeve in December 2012. I lost 100 lbs but have since gained back 55 Lbs. I have extreme GERD, have been hospitalized for Ulcers. i went and met with the doctor and he recommended doing the bypass to alleviate my GERD and other issues. i am now waiting on my ins approval. Has anyone else had this procedure done? did it relieve your GERD and how much additional weight did you lose?
