Food Before and After Photos
Arabesque replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Not a food before & after more of a no food issue. The shelves are bare at the supermarket again this week & I’m really struggling to find the products I buy regularly that form a big part of my eating regime. Been having to make some poor food choices: processed foods & not the raw ingredients I prefer to buy. Calories are increasing & I’m struggling to meet my protein goal. It’s not a hoarding issue as such here in Australia at the moment, it’s a supply chain problem. No workers, no transport drivers, no logistics handlers, etc. (Damn all those young people who had to go out en masse to celebrate Christmas & New Year, got sick then infected their families, friends & co workers.) So even if a company has some staff & can produce produce a reduced volume of goods, they’re struggling to get it transported to the grocery store distribution centres & then to the actually stores. Last week & again this week I couldn’t buy rolled oats, lactose free milk, high protein yoghurt, chicken tenders, prawns, protein bars, tinned mixed beans, water, etc. plus not as urgently washing powder & toilet paper. Of course there seemed to be pallets of coke & chips. 🤷🏻♀️ I even went to a couple of different stores to see what I could find. It had been occurring for a couple of months on random items but the last fortnight has been terrible. They’re saying this could continue for another month. I said to the checkout girl that this must be what it was like in Russia back in the 70s & 80s when they had to line up for bread & other essentials. She looked at me blankly but she was barely 18. 😉 -
I’ve committed to getting gastric sleeve in April but I am barely 30 BMI. My logic is that I can pack a few pounds on ( who’s kidding- I love to eat and could easily eat to gain forever) but I’m starting to struggle mentally and I do some extreme exercise so burn through calories on occasion. Feeling like I’m almost “sport eating” when I’m not hungry because I want to make sure I don’t get down there only to be turned around for BMI under 30. I also would love to do a proper liver shrinking pre op diet without risking going under 30 BMI so right now enjoying some indulgence to put me well into qualifying range. Am I nuts? No I don’t think so, I am doing this because I want permanent change. Sure I could lose 30 pounds through giving up sugar and flour and weighing my food. I could put limits on how much beer I drink. Hot yoga, running etc. But I also go back to old ways. Gsv gives you that sort of permanence which you must adopt new lifestyle or face discomfort. I guess I am just looking for others who may have been thinking how I am thinking and found success with gsv. How different is it with a small stomach? How did you avoid unhealthy behaviors trying to stay above 30 BMI? Please be mindful how you comment. I am committed to changing my life for the better and just reaching out as an athlete, human, woman. Thanks

Not really an ode; I'm not a composer. If I were I'd write a lil' song to a very overlooked, beautiful vegetable that I've been sleeping on. Cauliflower rice completes my Thai takeaway. Steamed cauliflower is great instead of plain potatoes. Grilled cauliflower adds umami to - let's be honest - sometimes bland post-bariatric dishes. But there's a new thing in town! I was browsing the frozen meals section at the store. As usual, most dishes are 600+ calories and I'm a single dude. I can't eat all that in one sitting. Yet lo and behold, cauliflower gratin with lean, shredded ham. Could that be good, I wondered? Surely not. 284 calories for such a huge dish? This must suck. Oh well, let's try. 45 minutes in the oven, grated a little bit of parmesan cheese on it (80 cals worth) and my god, what a feast! Had half of this and I'm saving the other half for Dinner 2. Here's to cauliflower!

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
csrouse replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all. Wanted to check in and see how folks are doing? I had my sleeve 12/9 and the weight loss is slowing already. Nutritionist says I’m right on track but it sure is hard not to see the scale moving. I’m tracking 100%, hitting my protein and staying well within calories. It can’t stay stalled forever right? also how the heck do you update current weight? I figured it out -

4 weeks out tomorrow and saw my nutritionist last Thursday she cleared me to go from purée to soft. It broke my stall and today I am 197.7!! I am still not hitting 1200 calories but I know when I’m full now unlike liquid and purée stage. I had real chicken cooked super soft yesterday and it was so amazing I felt human agin! I’m still eating cottage cheese but I didn’t purée it and I’m not sure when I’ll eat tuna again blah had enough! She also cleared me to eat white potatoes which I usually eat sweet potatoes but the store was out of them. So I had a small Yukon Gold potatoe (no skin) with a very small amount of organic grass fed butter (like real small 1/4 of a teaspoon) and about 1/2 of low fat sour cream topped with some fiesta shredded cheese for added Protein. I ate about 3/4 of it and was super full of course I didn’t eat the skin and I actually pushed off most of the sour cream it was just to much for me. But it was super yummy! Also I am up to 3 miles a day walking. SW 227 Todays weight 197.7 VSG 12/22/2021 -
Hey Long Termers - What are your macros now?
GreenTealael replied to Ylime's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
4+ yrs out: I guesstimate a lot. I rarely track my entire day, but I will spot check a meal to make sure I’m getting enough protein or limit my sugar intake. I haven’t looked at my overall calories in a long time. I’m certain if I start tracking now I will “behave” so it won’t show a realistic picture of my habits. I have hungry periods where I feel like I’m eating more than usual and then there’s times when I’m not as hungry. Since it’s been happening for so long I just roll with it. I’m definitely not eating 1000 cal or under. If I had to guess it’s around 1500-1600. That was my BMR according to a smart scale I used to have. One thing I know for sure is that I can’t eat anywhere close to the amount I did pre WLS. And my weight has been mostly stable for a few years. -
Hey Long Termers - What are your macros now?
GradyCat replied to Ylime's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hover around 1,000 calories a day with around 70 g protein and at least 64 oz water daily. I just started going to the gym again six weeks ago, so I get 90 minutes of cardio daily. I'm losing . . . .SLOWLY . . . -
Anyone cheated on the pre op and everything was still ok for the go ahead of surgery? I got told I need to do a 3 week pre op diet , eat anything I want aslong as it’s within 800-900 calories. First 4 days went great but slipped up last night and cheated. still got 2 weeks and 2 days until my gastric sleeve surgery, do you think this will effect anything? Or if I stick to it 100% from now I should be okay? I know I shouldn’t of cheated but I’m only human

I stalled every second week during my first two months post surgery. Frustrating? Yeah, but also totally normal. I was barely consuming 700 calories a day, and we're convinced that that MUST mean we lose weight. How can so few calories result in a stall and weird weight fluctuations, right? Well, the body responds to a prolonged and severe calorie reduction and post-op stress by stalling. It's a normal response, and our poor bodies have a lot of rewiring and adjusting to do after enduring major surgical changes. When I was finally able to eat more and up my calories to around 900 to 1200 a day ... the stalling stopped. I've now been fairly consistently losing, and feel like, after two months of modest weight loss, I've finally hit my "honeymoon period" (which everyone seemed to talk about but I was beginning to think wasn't going to happen for me). So stalls do break. Some go on for 3 weeks or even a bit over that. Others, like me, had them with mind numbing frequency. They're normal, and while it may seem counter-intuitive, super-low calorie intake often causes them.

Hey Long Termers - What are your macros now?
2Bsmaller18 replied to Ylime's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hit around 1300 calories a day. I strive for 80-90 g protein but usually fall short around 70. Try to limit carbs to 120g, fat 40g. That's about 30% each protein and fat and 40% carbs. It works and I am stable with a 3-4 lb. bounce over the past year. Rarely I will be at 1100 calories and occasionally I will hit 1600 which is usually due to more carbs. I still have a protein shake daily to hit that protein amount. -
almost a 90 lb drop in nine months is pretty good - so your overall loss is fine. But no loss in 2.5 months makes me think you've put yourself into maintenance. You should still be able to lose - I kept losing weight for 20 months - although it does slow down the further out you go. You may have to cut calories - or increase your exercise - or both - to get things going again. Are you still weighing/measuring food and logging everything you eat? If not, go back to that. I still do that at almost seven years out.

I'm 6.5 years out. The only things I pay attention to anymore are protein grams, fluids, and overall calories. Unless I have a REALLY intense exercise day, I'll be fine if I stay at or under 1700 calories (but of course, this is going to be different for everyone). I need to average about 100 grams of protein a day or my prealbumin level tanks, so...I also strive to do that. Fluids, of course, need to be at least 64 oz a day. But...that's it. -
I'm 3.5 years out. For such a long time I followed my Dr's rules and strived to stick with the 1,000 calories on a non-workout day and the 70g protein goal. But even with that protein goal and water I still find myself hungry and over the past year my calorie count has picked up. My Dr continues to advocate no more than 1 cup of food 3x a day with one snack of veggies. That just hasn't been sustainable for me. My weight has remained fairly steady so there haven't been any real negative impacts, but I just get so stressed when I'm not meeting the intended goals. So - where are you all at?

A mini charcuterie board, lol! grapes, carrots, peppered salami, jalapeño havarti, truffle cheddar, and plain old cheddar. With some blue cheese dip on the side (i looooove blue cheese): 367 calories. Totally intend to eat it all while i binge watch my latest series du jour (Outlander, lol…dont judge me!) -
I lost 10 pounds week one then only one pound since and I’ll be 4 weeks out this coming Tuesday. I’ve lost 29 pounds total from liquid to now. My Nutritionist told me I need to push my calories to 1200 a day to start loosing again. I’m walking 3 miles a day now so I’m super frustrated l. I was vegan preop and I was loosing way more than this and I’ve questioned if this was smart or not. My husband, surgeon and Nutritionist keep telling me to be patient I’ll loose eventually… but when? We shalll see I suppose I only had 100 to loose so now I have around 70 it is encouraging to see you’ve lost 107

Yeah, limit sugar as much as you can. But if you like sweet treats, I found a good one. If you stick to the recommended serving of 15 pieces (bears), it's a good option. 5 g protein. 120 calories. 7 g sugar.

6 Almost 6 months out and have lost
Bluebonnetgirl replied to Ready21's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 6 months out and have lost about 68 pounds. I had been stalled since the end of November and sought advice from my nutritionist. She said to to keep on keeping on. So I did and suddenly this past week, I started losing again. I go by volume rather than oz. But I eat 3/4 a cup at a time. Eat between 800-1000 calories a day. Work out at the gym 3 times a week and do 30 minutes of cardio 6 days a week. I wish it were more and I have certainly not my surgeons goals at any check up, but I am close. He wanted me to be at 160 by my February appt. I am not sure I am going to make that, but I will be within 10lbs of it. -
I’m almost a month out and saw my nutritionist Thursday because I’ve only lost a pound the past 2 weeks m. I use an app for my calories and water and even though I’m getting in my water my calories are under 750. She told me to up my calories and it should break the stall. So my advice is follow the protocol you’ve been given and if you feel unsure etc see if you can get into your nutritionist- it made all the difference in the world to me and calmed my anxiety way way down.

How much weight did you lose per month after 6 months?
Arabesque replied to Rey Rodriguez's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are a couple of things you can pretty much depend upon after weight loss surgery. One: the more you have to lose the faster you’ll lose at the beginning. Two: the heady exciting weight loss rate you have at the beginning doesn’t continue. Three: the closer you are to your goal weight the more slowly you’ll lose. Welcome to experiencing the frustration of number three. The scale that hardly moves. Your goal weight is just there in touching distance. The days & weeks slowly pass with little to show…. But don’t worry, you will get there. Your weight loss is slowing because you’re eating more & are getting to the point where you are consuming the number of calories your body needs to function. Congrats on your weight loss so far. Whoo hoo! -
This is all great advice!! I upped my water intake since Monday when I made this post and I’ve lost 3lbs. Since I’m drinking more water through tea, I haven’t been hungry enough to eat more than 800 calories…if I even reach that. This is all a HUGE learning process for me that never ends.

Is Breakfast The Most Important Meal of the Day?
pintsizedmallrat replied to GradyCat's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I have to eat breakfast or my vitamins and meds will make me sick to my stomach. I don't eat a whole lot though; I pretty much always have 1/2 a serving of cottage cheese and 1/2 a serving of some kind of fruit mixed together (usually mango, papaya, or pineapple), which is about 100 calories and probably is more of a snack than a meal. -

Is Breakfast The Most Important Meal of the Day?
lizonaplane replied to GradyCat's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
There was a study a few years ago, I only read the summary, but basically what they said is that people who aren't normally breakfast eaters will still eat the same amount as they would normally later in the day, but it addition, they'll be eating the breakfast too, so it will be more calories total. However, those who normally eat breakfast will eat MORE during the rest of the day if they skip breakfast. In other words, you need to do what comes naturally to you if you want to reduce calories. This study did not look at people who have had bariatric surgery, and I know my surgery center says to eat breakfast, but I tend to drink a protein shake around 9 and then sometimes I have a "snack" around 10:30 if I drink the protein shake too early. Of course, I also tend to eat lunch around 11:30 (later recently, as I've gotten through the worst of the post-surgery hunger I had). -
How much weight did you lose per month after 6 months?
ms.sss replied to Rey Rodriguez's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yeah, i went ultra low throughout the 7 months of weight loss phase, for me, that meant under 20g NET carbs per day (i don’t count fibre nor sugar alcohols). For about a year into maintenance, I just went “regular” low-carb at about 50~60g net daily. Now, while I do still keep track of my daily carb amounts, I don’t try to stick to any limits or anything…I track mostly for data collection and future analysis (yeah im nerdy like that, lol). In terms of calorie consumption, here are the averages during MY weight loss phase…. NOTE: my calorie intake is on the low side compared to others I’ve read on here. I do not recommend anyone do as I do without a consultation with a medical professional. It worked for me…and may or may not work for you. 2 week liquid pre-op diet: 600-900 cals (I had either 2 or 3 protein shakes a day) First 2 weeks post op: 50 cals a day (no joke…surprised I didn’t keel over and die) Week 3 to Month 3: 300-400 a day Months 4-5: 400-600 a day Months 6-7: 600-800 a day Months 8-12…worked up to 1500 Year 2: 2200+ a day (this was my peak exercise/activity period) Year 3: 1800-2100 a day Now (in year 4): 1600-2000 a day, but mostly stay around 1800. -
havent lost in 2 1/2 months 10 months post op

unfortunately, 1300-1400 calories a day IS maintenance level for some women. We're all over the board - some women can eat 2000 to maintain, others can only have 1200. It's dependent on so many factors (age, how much of your body weight is muscle, metabolic level, how active you are, etc). My TDEE says about the same (I'm 5'6" and fairly active (strength training or cardio every day)), but I would gain weight on 2300 calories. My maintenance range is 1500-1700. You'll have to kind of experiment with different ranges to see where you maintain, and at what point you start losing again. And of course, decide if you're willing to struggle long term to maintain a weight that's lower than what your body seems to prefer. Unfortunately, my new set point seems to be about 160 - which I don't like - but I know if I want to get or stay below that, I'm going to need to fight my biology. and yes - the body weight your body likes might be higher than what your mind likes - AND - given you lift weights, you may already be leaner than you think. I had a DEXA scan when I weighed 146 lbs, because I wanted to see how much more weight I needed to lose. Turns out I only had 22% body fat, which is pretty lean for a woman - so both the scan technician - and my PCP - said I was already at an ideal weight and did not need to lose anymore (if you want to do a DEXA scan, those that you do at a medical facility will not give you the info you want. Those will only give you your bone density. You need to go to one of those commercial places, like DEXAfit, or something like a sports lab at a university for one that gives you info on body composition (percentage of fat/muscle/bone you have). They cost somewhere in the $100-150 range)
