Yes, overdid it on the walking for sure. Lesson learned. Thanks for what to expect on the poop. This is new to me, since I'm used to the opposite (5-7 times a day). I guess I'll go buy some miralax, because I've read here about the constipation and obstructions. I was surprised at first to when the Dr recommended the VSG and not RNY. I like to read, read, read, and I thought the bypass was going to be the option. The Dr said the sleeve can make GERD worse, and make people who didn't have GERD get GERD, but he said it's 10-20%, not 50/50 or worse odds. I even had Barrett's Esophagus that resolved a couple of years ago after years of PPI meds. I still consulted with my gastroenterologist prior to surgery. In fact I had an EGD in March because i was having stricture. He said even as I was dropping the rest of my meds (during weight loss) I would likely have to remain on the 40mg omeprazole for the rest of my life. I was already planning on that, so I made the decision to try the sleeve with my eyes wide open that I might need a revision. The first night I had a little reflux when I got in bed, but haven't had any issues since. I am still taking my PPI. Thanks for the response! -

8000 steps is pretty high for being just a few days out of surgery. Your body needs to rest and heal. It's been several years since I had surgery, but I think I mostly walked around my house a little the first three or four days, then did a jaunt around the block every day for a few days after that. It's good to be up and moving, but don't push yourself too much - again, your body needs to heal. as far as poop, it often takes a good week for the first one (there's not much in there yet), and the first one tends to be a doozy. A lot of us start taking stool softeners a couple of days ahead of it to prepare for it. After that, a minority of people experience occasional diarrhea, but most experience constipation, often chronic (it's due to the high protein diet plus the iron and calcium (if you're taking those). I still take a capful of Miralax every morning to keep on top of it. watch out for reflux - I'm a little surprised your surgeon recommended VSG since that's been known to make GERD worse, but that's not the case for everyone. But just keep tabs on it and manage it if it doesn't resolve or gets worse (a minority get it so badly they end up getting a revision to RNY, but for most, it can be managed with PPIs). You just don't want that to get out of control - but again, you may not have issues with it. Some people have said theirs even got better after surgery, so you never know.. I haven't seen many posts about hiccups, so I don't know how common that is, but it doesn't surprise my since your stomach's been sliced and diced. And the painful transitions (when you go from lying down to standing up, or whatever) - yep, that's very common. That's really the only time I had pain. It felt like I'd just done about 1000 crunches. that went away after a week or so, I think. sounds like things are going well over all, though. Welcome to the losers' bench! -

A little about me. 45-year-old, male. Fought my weight my entire adult life. Chronic IBS. GERD. Heart attack in 2016. Heart disease. Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea in 2022. Fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome. Diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos - Hypermobility Type in 1997. Currently have chronic pain in both shoulders and both hips, especially when sleeping. This is due to the EDS. I have SLAP tears in both shoulders as well as partial rotator cuff tears, and frozen shoulder on the right side. Married. Twin 13-year-olds. Quality of life really hit bottom. I decided to take control of my life. I had my first appointment with the Dr back in November. Just had VSG on May 18th. Severe gas pains for about the first 5 hours after surgery. Like really bad. Gave me dilaudid to help with the pain, and it did knock the edge off. I was able to get up and walk, drink a little, and pee. Let me go home about 6.5 hours in recovery. The first nights sleep was brutal. THE HICCUPS! Why did no one tell me about the hiccups?! I was able to wear my apnea mask just fine, but every time I got up to pee (about 5 times total), the hiccups would start almost immediately and last for 30 minutes or more. I was shaking the bed and keeping the wife awake, they were so bad. Also had some mild reflux with a little bit of the foamies (I got those before the surgery when the reflux would flare). 1st day after surgery, much better. Very few hiccups. No nausea. Got all of my fluids and protein in. Even walked about 8000 steps (I would've done anything to make sure the gas pain didn't return). Now I'm on the third full day after surgery, and each day has been better than the last. Still tired. Off pain meds for the entire day today. I can't stomach the clear protein, so I'm drinking full (creamy) protein diluted 50/50 with water. No issues so far. I think I have overdone it with walking too much too soon, because I feel really tired and weak. I'm going to cut the walking down to 5000 steps and see if that helps. My ABS are pretty sore, especially immediately after sitting/laying. They tighten up pretty quick. Still a long road ahead, with 1-2 shoulder surgeries later this year. And I know there's still a long road ahead with my weight loss journey. I appreciate everyone's candidness describing their issues (poop, slime/foamies, etc). I like to know what to expect. No regrets. -
Yes difficult to get all the liquid and protein in. Even prepping the 1oz cups ahead. Very fatigued all I want is sleep! Anyone else having these issues?

Hospital Stay/Exercise Must Haves

I wasn't expecting dry mouth from hell, so agree with lip balm, mouth spray for that. I told the nurses, and they brought me ice chips. Said it was caused from all the anesthesia. I took very little to the hospital. Wore same clothes home. Took my phone and didn't even use it till drive home. I slept most of the time while there. Walking is the best thing you can do for exercise starting out and it's free. I bought a Garmin GPS watch to map out my routes, track my distance, heartrate etc. It even has an emergency call option if you're out somewhere and go down. It will pinpoint your location. There are a bazillion types of watches to choose from in all price ranges and options. Great for tracking your progress. -
Well, you're right. There are people living this way. Their opinion is just not as popular so some of us prefer to rather not comment. If it's possible not to worry about weight in the future? I can only speak for myself and I notice the lingering fear in regards to weight gain in the back of my brain so for me it doesn't seem to be possible but that doesn't mean that there are people who have a more relaxed relationship with this. It's definitely not mandatory. That's BS. I'm saying it again: it's not mandatory. Low carb, high protein is just the trend nowadays. Or keto. Some years ago it was low fat. Times simply have changed and they will most likely change again, bringing on the next dietary trend.

My program allowed carbs after 3 months! Whole grain carbs, healthy carbs, etc. I've learned to love Keto bread products as they're usually low cal, low carb & can be a solid substitute! You 100% don't need to be keto to get them, they're just a really good compromise if you want to go that route. I even make pizza with keto crust (I use Joseph's Brand Pita Bread & Lavash Bread for it) It's good to have around But I've also found that I crave breads less in general. I don't -need- a carb to be apart of every meal anymore bc all that protein keeps me full & satisfied. Maybe that can happen for you too

not all bariatric diets are low-carb. Some are balanced. Also, once I got a ways out, I mostly just counted calories (although making sure I met my protein and fluid goals) losing weight via exercising is of course possible, but really tough. People overestimate how many calories they burn by exercising. According to research, exercise is much more effective in helping to maintain weight than it is to lose weight. Of course, it's always excellent for your overall health and people should do it (if they're able to, of course) - but as the primary weight loss tool, it's supposedly not that effective (well...unless you're spending a few hours a day at the gym or are into running marathons - that kind of intensity would probably do it!) I'm eight years out and have never reached the point where I've been able to eat without being concerned about my weight. I know from experience that if I eat too many calories for more than a couple of days, my weight will gradually start heading north again. Honestly, a lot of my never-been-obese friends are the same way- they have to watch what they eat. Unfortunately I think that's the way it goes for a lot of people - obese or not. Not many are blessed with the ability to eat whatever they want and not gain weight. also, you'll eventually get to the point where you can enjoy the things you do now in moderation. Nothing is off-limits for me And DS patients can generally eat more than RNY and VSG patients because of the malabsorption (RNY has some malabsorption of calories, but only for about a year, and it's not as strong as it is in DS people). Although if I'm not mistaken, I think DSers do have to be more careful with carbs - IIRC, they don't digest them well - and I know traditional DSers don't have to worry too much about fat (but not sure about SADI patients) - but check with your clinic. They'll know for sure.

Ok so I’m not a sweets person but every once in a while I do want ice cream. So I mixed premier protein cookies and cream and instant sugar free chocolate pudding and added a scoop of vanilla protein powder. Blended and refrigerated it in 2 ounce containers. Omg. I ate one. I know that’s not much but it was good enough for me. So good guys.

Hi So my own surgery date has been confirmed as Sunday 18 June with a 2 day stay in hospital. I am having the sleeve done. I have a 10 day high protein, high veg diet to complete from 7 June to 17 and then fasting from 9pm the night before. Have not said it to people that I am doing this bar 2. Anyone any advice about the time off? I am self employed and don't want to take a huge amount of time off. I have kept a few days free but want to keep myself open to working as well. Not nervous about getting the surgery done. Honestly, that wouldn't bother me but a little nervous about going home from the surgery. Should I just expect to lie on the settee for a few days and watch bad movies? The team were not helpful in this regard. They just keep telling me everyone is different and it is hard to know. After the surgery I have a 7 day liquid diet to do followed by a one week of mashed foods like potato or scrambled eggs. Then back to regular food but small portions. I have multi vitamins for 2 years. Nice to find this resource.

I had my surgery Monday the 15th, I feel fine other than soreness at the incision sites. I have been following the food plan, eating soft, mushy proteins and liquids yet I have only lost 1 pound this week which is sort of discouraging. I have not had a bowel movement since the morning before surgery and that's also making me nervous. Anyone else have these issues?

Are you telling me surgery may cure my Pillaris? O joy! Is this what you had @Arabesque? I've been plagued with it since a young teen. Drives me nuts. This condition develops when the skin produces too much of a protein called keratin, which can block hair follicles and cause bumps to develop. The bumps are usually on the arms, thighs, cheeks, and buttocks. They're white, sometimes red, and typically don't hurt or itch.

@LindsayT Here is a photo the one I purchased. I like it. Truly unflavored and it mixes in well. Not grainy. The protein count for the scoop size is great. I put a K-cup next to the scoop in the photo. I also use a half scoop frequently to add 11grams. -
How's the genepro protein? I just ordered some and should be here soon. I'm having trouble finding an unflavored protein that isn't awful tasting. Also, congratulations on your win! That's exciting.

I'm ten days out from VSG with a esophageal hernia repair. I did need to take Tylenol for pain for seven days, and I'm happy to be pain free now. Luckily, I was able to take 50oz of fluid from the beginning - and I am now up to 75+oz. Honestly, I was more worried about that than food restriction, because I have always loved drinking water. All of the sweet protein shakes and waters have put me off sweet tastes and I have been experimenting. I've been adding GenePro unflavored protein powder to everything (there is one with 22 grams of Protein for a small scoop). I'm in the pureed stage with meat now (I know - but my University's lead surgeon allows on his diet plan) and I have enjoyed cream of malanga soup with one very soft scrambled egg and today I made a kind of blended chicken tzatziki soup with cucumber, cottage cheese, chicken and dill, plus a little water. I'm so happy! 4oz had 21gr of protein. I also love spices, but I'm taking it slow. I have a couple of finishing salts with truffle or lemon/fennel. Just the lightest sprinkle makes a big difference to my tastebuds. And FlavorGod's Gingerbread cookie topper mini-sprinkles gives a zing to all the protein yogurt I've been eating. I hope this helps some people looking for ideas to get away from the sweet tastes. I've also switch off premade protein shakes and back to Iconic brand protein powders. They taste be mild and not sweet, so once you get to the 8oz of liquids I recommend it. I have been getting out to do errands before I go back to work next week, however I haven't really started walking with exercise in mind. It's time to start today. I'm nine pounds down and very happy I made the decision for WLS. 59 since starting this journey with the Bariatric Center in November. I'm a foodie, and I was worried about not being able to enjoy foods in the future and I'm incredibly happy I am on the way to good health. On that note, I was taken off a blood pressure med and a statin by my GP yesterday. THAT was a win! For any of you who are having more challenges after your surgery. Hang in there! My heart is with you because I know that could be any of us. -
isopure infusions - is there a trick?

I don't use Isopure but it seems this method would work mixing any protein powder drink. I blend my protein shakes with a Vitamix. I was worried because I read on this forum that my blender would cause too much foam and contribute to gas. Never was a problem and I swear it makes my drinks taste better. No chalkiness etc. I add a frozen cup of yogurt and ice cubes along with skim milk to the mix and it comes out more like a milk shake. I can eat it with a spoon. And to add a bit of sweetness or change up the flavors I add half a packet of SF Sunkist singles or Crystal Light. So maybe try adding some frozen to cut down on the foam for more of a dessert type drink. -

I'm so sorry to see that you're struggling so! I know someone who had surgery several years ago and experienced similar problems; they had stricture/narrowing in the esophagus that had to be dilated. Has your surgeon checked for that? I'll keep praying you feel better quick and are able to get your fluids and protein in.

Sure, Carla. Per day, it is: * 2 litres (3.5 pints) of semi-skimmed mild spread throughout the day. If lactose intolerant or you have loose stools, cramping or bloating, switch to lactose-free semi-skimmed milk from the fresh milk counter. Soy milk can also be used but standard and unsweetened. Other plant based milks are not suitable as they contain little or no protein. * At least 1 litre (2 pints) of other calorie and caffeine free fluids to keep you hydrated (tea, herbal tea). Water is unlimited. No fizzy drinks, energy drinks, high caffeine drinks or cola's. You can have sugar free squashes or cordials but it must be labelled sugar-free or no added sugar; therefore, it should not contain free sugar, sucrose, sorbitol, fructose or fruit juice. * One salty drink to maintain sodium levels such as a mug of hot water with a stock cube or Bovril according tot he instructions. Alternatively, yo can have a 4g teaspoon of yeast extract (i.e. marmite). * One multivitamin and mineral tablet containing 100% of all A-Z vitamins and minerals as this is NOIT a balanced diet for the long term. * Allowed extras are one sachet of sugar free jelly and 3 sticks of sugar free gum per day - these are not needed but may be a welcome change * NO FOOD I hope i have typed this correctly 😊

Thanks for the information, if you don't mind can you post your milk diet. It seems to me whether it's the bypass or the sleeve everyone has a different regiment for the two weeks prior to surgery mine's just consist of two meal replacements 3 to 4 oz of a protein and two string cheeses in the host of liquids the first week and then the second week is all liquids

I take collagen for skin and joints. High protein with lack of fats have my joints really hurting.

Resources for partners/family members?

Dr Matthew Weiner & Dr John Pilcher have excellent videos (you tube) on a range of bariatric topics really aimed at you & not so much your family members but they are very informative & an excellent resource. As for food, you may find by soft food you will be able to eat some of the same meals. Soups, stews, braises, mince dishes, etc. You may have to make ingredient substitutions, change cooking styles as you slowly reintroduce certain foods & ingredients but generally meals the whole family can eat - you’ll just have a much smaller portion. Great opportunity to try new healthier, more nutrient dense recipes & new/alternative ingredients. I live alone but regularly spent weekends with my 80+ yr old mother. She ate whatever I cooked & ate without issue or difficulty. I’d often have dinner at family or friends or go out to eat I just made sure my friends new what I could or couldn’t eat & made careful choices. I’d check menus before going out so I’d know what I could eat or what I could ask to be modified. I ate many of the meals I always did simply by making modifications to the recipes so it would be appropriate for my needs. My friend cooked for her family & basically ate that same meal from solid foods. For example making a pasta dish - she’d use zucchini noodles or would just eat the meat sauce component. Having tacos - she’d eat the filling not the taco shell. A bonus of your smaller portion size is leftovers. I freeze leftovers all the time. They are easy meals fir you to have when you don’t feel like cooking or for when your family wants something which isn’t a good option for you. Your weight loss period is the time you use to establish better eating habits & food choices. When you stop losing you don’t go back to eating how & what you used to eat. That’s why every other diet we were on failed & we’d regain weight. All the best. -

Holy cow! I’m a week out from my RNY and still can’t put that much liquid in my pouch. Doing well otherwise except just tired and a bit weak. Meeting all my protein and fluid goals so far. Good luck to ya!!
