  1. Sorry to hear that you're so fatigued, but I think it's normal considering how few calories you're taking in and the fact that you just had major surgery and your body is diverting all energy to healing. You really need to get that liquid in to avoid dehydration. Try some sugar-free popsicles, they count as liquid and it is easily tolerated. The crying is the hormone release from the surgery. It's very common. Hang in there. We're here for you.
  2. Don't worry this is normal! You're taking in so few calories that you feel dizzy and the surgery and aftermath is a lot to go through emotionally. I was really dizze the first two weeks after surgery and I even had to put a chair in the shower. I know everyone says to walk but don't walk if you're feeling like this. Instead just get up once an hour and move around your house. As you're able to eat and drink a little bit more things should get better.
  3. my insurance also required six months of a professionally-supervised diet (that is, by a PCP or a registered dietitian). They didn't specify the TYPE of diet, though - as long as it was professionally supervised. I worked with a dietitian. She had me eat c. 2300 calories a day, gradually increase my protein intake, and gradually decrease my carb intake. I also had to wean myself off caffeine and carbonated beverages. I had to add in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Just basic healthy eating. it kind of prepped me for what eating would be like after surgery.
  4. Here Goes; I have been in denial & coming back home to this forum has made me "see" that I have a lot of work to do & accountability. In the Spring of 2020 during the height of COVID my neighbors dog ran out on me and as I stumbled while trying to get away from the dog I fell, hit the concrete, & couldn't move. I had broken a bone in my back. I cried at every day for at least 2 weeks due to the pain. I was immobilized and the work I did outside of my home that had me active, lifting heavy items, & always moving I could no longer due. Here 1 1/2 years later I continue to have back issues. If I walk too long, lift too much or sit too long I am in pain. Although I can't consume a lot of food at one time, I know I am getting calories in with the wrong things. After surgery I was no longer able to drink straight water, it would make me nauseated and it would come back up so I know I am not getting enough fluids in. I am vitamin deficient (lab results) and I have put too much of my time into helping family & friends that honestly, I forgot about me. I was at 163lbs now I am at 190. I was 33lbs from goal now I am at 60lbs from goal. I know to some it may not seem like a lot but most of us know losing 5lbs takes a lot of effort! Bariatric Pal Forums: Coming back home & reading posts after being away so long has made me look at myself in the mirror & remember what I did in the first place that made my weight loss successful. SO HERE I GO: recommitting to myself; committing to the 30/15 rule (wait to eat 15 mins after drinking and wait to drink 30 mins after eating), COUNTING my calories & making sure I get in my grams of protein (which Unjury is a great brand), finding health zero cal/sugar enhancers to get my water in daily; & getting back to strength training that would not put a strain on my back. I don't know about you guys but COVID time gave me an excuse to cancel my Planet Fitness membership 😕 Am I going to do what they call a "pouch reset"? Nawhhhh...I'm doing a recommitment to self reset. I know what to do & I have all the tools (food scale, portion control serving utensils etc.) I am raising the bar once again for my life. Thank you Fitness Pal Family for always being here and giving all of us prodigal children a home to come back to. eating reset back to basics.doc
  5. The last six months I'm averaging 650-700 calories. My surgeon told me at my 3 month check up that 700 cal is too low to up it to 900-1000 cal but I can't wrap my head around it. 😢 I have this fear that if I go to 900 cal, it'll soon be 1000 cal, to 1200 cal... And more based on my history. I believe that I'll stay around 700 cal until I hit my goal and then increase it to the calorie amount necessary to maintain it. My appetite is still in check and had read that my appetite will increase at the 6 months to a year anyway. Riding the wave.

    Gastric bypass sleeve

I had the sleeve then due to reflux I had to get a revision to a gastric bypass. I wish I knew that gastric bypass is far more effective for me in regards to weight loss, no reflux and no bowel issues. I would've gone straight to having the gastric bypass. I haven't had any problem maintaining my nutrition. Like the others, I take my MV every day and calcium supplements if I don't get enough calcium from my diet. My sleeve was on the large side so if you do decide to go this route, ask your surgeon what size your stomach will be. Mine started off at 10 ounces. I never stretched it but it was difficult to maintain a calorie deficiency. With the bypass, everything seems so natural for me. I feel great, small amounts satisfy me and literally zero side effects as far as bowel, acid reflux... Etc. Hope this helps.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

October 8th, emergency surgery on the 10th, second emergency surgery on the 15th! Finally was able to start eating puréed foods at the very end of December/beginning of January. I was finally told I can eat foods except bread, pasta and raw vegetables but I can’t eat more than about 700 calories a day and now my weight loss has stalled and I don’t know why. It is very frustrating after all the issues I have had. Happily take advice, please!!!

    VSG

I I was told that as well but then 2 weeks before my surgery they said I should start with shakes, small meal is chicken and vegetables lunch, small fruit and shake for dinner. I’m assuming to get used to the amount of calories you will be trying to take in post op. I am on all clear liquids on Sunday for surgery on Monday.
  9. I didn't have band to bypass, I had sleeve to bypass, but I can still suggest what I think is the greatest tool for me - tracking RELIGIOUSLY. Every thing that goes in your mouth gets weighed and tracked. Buy yourself a little digital scale, you don't need anything fancy, can get a decent one for ten bucks on Amazon. Make sure it does both grams and ounces, and USE it every day for every meal, and put it in your tracker. I use MyFitnessPal (free version), you can use whatever you feel comfortable with. But weigh and track. NEVER eyeball a meal. You will always assume it is less than it actually is. I don't eat more than 4 oz or so at a time, and you would be surprised how small 4 oz of some foods can appear. The scale keeps you from cheating with the portions (even accidentally) and the tracker keeps you honest about how many calories you are consuming, as well as the nutritional values. An extra benefit of the tracker is if you start to have problems or backslide, you can go back to see what you did that worked and recreate those meals. I recently went back and looked at my entries in 2016 and 2017 to see what I was eating the first months I was sleeved because I was doing so well, and I started eating those same things again now and am seeing similar success.
  10. You may not be able to "build" a lot of muscle definition. It's actually really really hard to "gain" muscle weight, especially for women, people in their 40s or older, and people on a low calorie diet. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do strength training; it absolutely is important for maintaining muscle mass which is often lost when you lose weight quickly. Also, you may have lose skin which could interfere with measuring any muscle gains. Maybe I'm wrong - but don't expect to see a huge gain even over many months Good luck!

    Bowel movements

Hi guys, abit TMI but I’m currently 9 days into my pre op LRD and I’ve noticed my bowel movements are not as regular as I’ve known them to be previously. I can now go 2 days without passing. Is this expected due to the little amount of calories ? Has anyone else had or have the same issue ? Thankyou!

    Pregnant after sleeve

Congratulations! Definitely see your doctor & then your surgeon. Start adding folic acid to your vitamin regime now - get supplements from your pharmacy. Also, talk to your dietician about what you can add to your post surgical diet to ensure you’re getting in a variety of nutrients. You may be surprised how few extra calories you’ll need - you’re not eating for two adults but for yourself & a tiny growing baby.

    Doing it all wrong.

Don't worry! I'd agree with the coke, but if you really really need it - and hey, we all have something we really, really need - why not give diet a go, let it sit and decarbonate (tip: pour room temp carbonated drinks over ice; that'll take out a lot of carbonation right off the bat). Decarbonated diet soda is fine in moderation, it's calorie-free fluids. Perfection is the enemy of good, is really the best line in this thread. You saw what happened: when you give up on perfect, it all goes out the window. Be honest with yourself and try to deal with it before you go into the disaster zone. Oh, and: don't trust whether you experience pain signals or not. Your nerves are cut, and it'll be a while before you can trust that mechanism. Relax. Refocus. Forgive yourself. Move on.

The only thing I'm going to fuss at you about 😀is the coke. Carbonated beverages aren't a good idea at this stage of the game, especially if you drank it with a straw. Remember . . . no straws. Have you tried premade protein shakes? I stomach them a LOT better than the powdered ones. I use GNC Lean Shake 25 g protein Swiss Chocolate. I swear by it. Don't worry about calorie counting at this point, but do try to get something down. Bone broth? Sugar-free popsicles? Jello? Something! Take care.

    Doing it all wrong.

Don't worry you are not alone a lot of us feel like this, my dietitian said don't worry about calories at this stage as long as you are getting something in, however at this stage I would keep away from coke, maybe when you are 6 weeks out frozen coke might be OK. Maybe try sports drinks or water with disolveable vitamins in it. I lived of KFC mash and gravy during the puree and soft food stage I couldn't stomach anything else

    Just not hungry.

My Dr told me set an alarm I’m to eat 6 small meals a day around 200 calories. Honestly I just turn the alarm off and finish what I’m doing 1/2 the time I forget until the next alarm goes off. I’m lucky to hit 700 calories a day but I’m only 4 weeks post op. Take some hair and nail Vitamins I had someone who had VSG tell me that and she didn’t loose very much like not even noticeable. Food is yucky to me too but I know my body needs nutrition. Good on the weight loss! Hope you can find something you like!
  18. 4 weeks out today VSG 12/22/21, and my Nutritionist started letting me eat real food ie soft real food Saturday and I had some chicken omg it was Heaven. Started the liquid diet before thanksgiving so it’s been awhile for me since I’ve eaten real food. My weight was 197 today so 30 pound total loss from liquid to today. The only thing I’m dealing with is I’m severely allergic to eggs now - big welts so Dr saw them said yep full blown allergy and my tummy hates Beans - all Beans I’ve tried them refried, hummus and I made pinto beans with ham for the family - had them in the crockpot 12 hours ate a few chewed well and back up they came. So I hope this resolves because I eat a lot of beans pre the VSG. I totally forgot to eat most of the mid morning to about 4 today and only got in around 500 calories. Other than that I’m super excited about where I am at. I still feel tenderness if I over do things on my right side where they removed the stomach but that’s it! No brain fog or vision issues at all.  Glad to see you guys doing good and glad to finally be moving from the dreaded stall lol!

    Food Before and After Photos

USSR love it. Her head would have exploded I’m sure. I am fortunate that I have a very good, but very expensive, butcher who still has meat so I have meat for dinner but I tend to get the chicken, salmon & prawns I eat at lunch from the supermarket as they’re a lot cheaper. But the meat sections in the supermarkets are very bare. Honestly I am a bit fussy. but there are certain things my tummy just doesn’t enjoy plus I can’t do the spice thing at all. The available stock is so erratic. Like this week they had prawns (yay) but were marinated in chilli (boo). I’ve spent time over the last 2+years finding the best food options - best protein, best general nutrition with least or no sugar/artificial sweeteners, low carbs & low calorie. Last week I went to three different stores to try to find what I needed. All I found was three tubs of yoghurt, a couple of protein bars & … processed frozen crumbed ‘chicken’ schnitzels - the horror! Because I don’t absorb protein well anymore, being unable to buy my trusted protein sources is a a worry. Oh God, I may have to go back to shakes - shudder.
  20. Okay I know a lot of you are going to fuss at me, but let me tell you why first. I am one week post bypass. I simply could not get down enough water / protein. I think they call it food avoidance. But anyway, the protein shakes....I couldn't even look at them. Let me mention here that I am 68 years old, probably a bit older than most of you. Broth was good, but as you know very few calories or protein. I tried to eat & drink like I was supposed to, but just couldn't. I did call in for some more nausea meds, (after I had gone through the original prescription) Finally got them today, and I willl try again tomorrow. Here's the thing; I was getting weaker and weaker. You know, wobbly legs, cold sweats. So today I broke my diet, ( which was to be still water, Vitamin Water, SF Jello and protein drinks.) Anyway, I went in the kitchen, got some instant mashed potatoes, and made a slurry of that and broth. Ate that twice, about half a cup the first time, a quarter cup the next. No bad effects that I could feel. Someone took me to get my prescriptions oh, and all I could think about was an ice cold Coca-Cola. Yes I know, no sugar, no carbonated beverages. But remember at this point, I was feeling genuinely weak. So I got a small iced coke. I drank about 2/3 over 6 hours. Tiny TINY sips, and....no bad effects. Then I had a tiny bit of well cooked Raman. And chewed the heck out of it.. Now I'm not stupid. I know I need to get back on the protein and I intend to do so, but becoming dangerously weak, (and again at my age,) I elected to put something in there because I had had less than 50 cal over the last four days. Guess what? I feel better. Should I have done this? Probably not. But I feel better. And for those of you who said I should call my doctor. Sometimes that you don't feel confident in what they're going to say, when they say "Well, FORCE yourself." (Well I have been. Duh. That's why I called you) My two cents worth.
  21. At one month out I was getting anywhere from under 500 to over 1100. I ate a lot of protein drinks to get my protein in. If I didn't eat protein drinks I never got enough. I still don't, and I'm 4 months out. I'm eating around 850-1500 calories a day now (usually around 1000). My dietician said there is no good research on how much to eat in the first few months after surgery. I would say to try to get your protein and fluids in, minimize sugar, and be active (I have a really hard time with the last one...)

I've regained the weight I lost

I agree with @GradyCat. You probably have not stretched your stomach out. Those calorie calculators are pretty much fiction. So much depends on your height, age, gender, activity level, weight, etc. The first thing to do is track EVERYTHING you eat and drink, to see where you are. Talk to your nutritionist/dietician. Don't be embarrassed; this is incredibly common especially during COVID. They have seen this before, I guarantee it. Talk to them about how many calories you need to lose weight and what your macros should be. I was told not to do a keto diet as the fat is too high. I currently try to reduce the amount of carbs I eat and make the carbs I do it complex carbs or fruit/veggies. For me, it's still hard to get much carbs in since I'm still trying to get enough protein at 4 months out. Don't try to be perfect: aim for 80% of your food being "healthy" with 20% "fun", or maybe 90-10 if that feels better. If you try to be 100% perfect, you will set yourself up for failure. Good luck and keep us posted!
  23. I'm finally mustering up the guts to ask for help. I am 5' 2" and I had gastric sleeve at 205 lbs. My struggle with weight has been life-long. I dropped down to 155 and I was actually quite happy there, as I was down to a size 10. I consumed about 900 cal/day at that point. Everything went to hell in a handbasket when COVID hit. I truly do not mean to make excuses, because there are none, but there were situational issues. My husband was hit severely early on in the pandemic, the kids were doing remote schooling, I was out of a job, I wasn't exercising and I chose to deal with all of this by getting diet sloppy. And the weight has just been creeping up. I am now at 190 lbs. What's even worse, is that according to the 13cal/pound calculation, I would need to eat 2470 calories per day in order to maintain a weight of 190lbs. I don't come close to that. I average 1600, and usually not even that much. My metabolism has always been a problem, which I suspect lots of people can identify with. I have tried Keto and Atkins on and off, but they are not sustainable for me. I read up on Pouch Reset, but then also read about the weight regain. I'm considering intermittent fasting, or simply using my Baritastic app and dropping it to 900 cals. I even looked into a revision, but that wouldn't solve the core issues, which I can't even identify at this point. I'm so ashamed by this. I've made a mess of this but at the same time, I'm committed to fixing this problem. Help? Thank you...
  24. a lot of people seem to eat between 600-800 kcal/day the first few months (well, other than the first month - which is usually lower), and then gradually increase it. I was eating around 1000 by about a year out. However, there are some surgeons who recommend higher amounts of calories sooner. I would say if you're meeting your protein requirements, are feeling comfortable, and your weight is trending down, you're fine.
  25. Which store please? Also a massive cauli fan here - hangover from my keto days when I must have eaten it almost every day in some form. And celeriac (celery root). Makes nice pretend fries baked in the oven with oil, and also very low carb and low calorie. I have never tried cauli as wings - definitely gonna give that a go - thank you for that idea!
