    Third Revision...

For some of us with GERD (acid reflux) caused by a VSG sleeve, the alternative to re-routing intestines is Barrett's Esophagus which carries like a 1% per year risk of Esophageal cancer. Sleeves create a pressure system where acid is much more likely to spew up and out. I really wish I had done RBG in the first place vs. having to get revised to it, although I kept off my weight with the sleeve the reflux, which was new after I got it, was a miserable situation for 7 years.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

I had my band placed in 2009, lost and maintained 89lbs for 7+ years. then in 2017 i got the flu and slipped my band.... So out came the band. I looked on and off for years for someone to revise.... but keep getting NOOOO you don't weigh enough. Over that time i put on 30lbs of the weight i lost. Went from 143 to 173.5. I was so depressed that i was doing everything i could and i was still gaining.... Crossfit, starving my self, diet pill.... nothing worked. I was weeks away from going to Mex to get the MGB when i happen to call a local dr. He agreed to see me. We talked and he said that because i had had the band that he could do a revision even though it was 2.5+ years out. He just had to note it in the file that i was a previous bander. So Aug 28, 2019 i revised to the sleeve. I had to pay out of pocket 14K. Worth every penny. As of today... down 38.5lbs in 19 weeks. 5'1" (now 51 y/o) 2009: SW: 232, LW: 135, but my most consistent weight was 143. Size 20 to a size 6 2019: SW: 173.5, CW: 135. Size 4-6 Pros of the band, i had total control of my diet. What i ate and didn't eat and if i ate too much, i "got rid of it". Sleeve, no maintenance. I can't eat nearly the amount of what i ate with the band. 2-3 bites and im done, but i'm hungry again in about an hour. I've only had two episodes of vomiting in 19 weeks. If your dr. will do a revision at the same time as a removal..... i would do it. Look into the Mini GB. Its what i really wanted, but my dr doesn't do them. So i choose to go with the sleeve and be 10 min from his office..... vs having to fly to Mex.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

I'm one of the lap band 50% failure rate statistics. I had mine over 10 years, and then had a slip and developed a hiatal hernia. 6 weeks ago I had the band removed, the hernia repaired and a revision to a RNY bypass. I dropped 20 pounds in three weeks. The weight is s-l-o-w-l-y dribbling off now, but even only 25 pounds down my knees hurt less and I move around a lot more. I haven't regretted it once. Check around and find a surgeon that will do the removal and revision in one surgery. My surgeon recommended the bypass because he said it was easier to revise to a bypass after having a lap band for years-scar tissue issues-and what catwoman7 said, many people who have NEVER had GERD develop it after a sleeve, and I had it terrible before I got my band. Good luck--don't be afraid to "doctor shop" until you find one. I had to go 4 hours away to a large urban area to find one, but I LOVE the one I found.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

a TON of people have had lapbands revised to sleeve or bypass for the reasons you mentioned. It's either that or risk being miserable the rest of your life. I'd go with a revision if it were me. Either of those two surgeries would be a good option, although if you're suffering from GERD, you may want to consider bypass. It often improves GERD, if not outright cures it.
  5. I had my lap band put in 2012. I lost 80 lbs the first year, maintained and then in 2016 had a prolapse and all my fluid removed. I never regained restriction from fills, just random days when my band would decide to be tight and I couldn't eat. By late 2018 I had gained all of my weight back. Mid 2019 I started to have reflux that lead into really bad chest pains. I even went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. After trying meds, and having an ultrasound I just had an upper GI yesterday. I still have a prolapse and irritation and it was recommended that I have the band removed. I am on the fence about having a revision....I don't think the doctors in my area will offer a revision within the same surgery as removing the band, and now that I have children I am more hesitant to have additional surgeries. Anyone have a good pro-con list of doing a revision?
  6. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and the other things you are going through. I had my revision in Sept my weight at surgery time was 213. I also had severe GERD and a fistula, which is why my BMI didn't really matter. You and I are the same height so you may not have any issues getting a revision at your current weight. As far as the Alcoholism goes have you tried talking to your regular DR? Most bariatric surgeons also have you see someone, and they may be able to help. I also agree with the diversion therapy that AJ talks about. I wish you all the best!
  7. Sorry to hear that you've been going through a lot. Likely the alcohol is causing the GERD and you'd have to detox completely before undergoing another surgery. Your BMI might be too low at this point to qualify for a revision. But you have the opportunity to work on both issues if you focus first on the drinking part, have you tried AA? I don't think you're going to get your weight under control until you get your drinking under control. My surgeon's office has behavioral counselors as part of the program, does yours? Perhaps you could talk to them.

    December Surgeries!

Hello peeps, I had my revision from Lap-Band to Mini-Gastric Bypass on Dec 29th in Mexico at Mexico Bariatric Center. Today I'm 9 days Post-op and I feel pretty good. Still on the Full liquid phase which is fine for me because I have zero hunger and have no desire to eat anything. Yesterday was the first day I actually had some dizziness and nausea after I showered but I think it's my body adjusting to my vitamins. I'm using Patch vitamins from PatchMD. I went back to work yesterday (desk job) but only worked until noon due to the nausea. Took a zofran, slept all afternoon and when I woke up the nausea was gone. Today I feel much better.
  9. I was doing great with the sleeve. Then my husband started beating me, my autistic son became a "teenager".... insert dramatic scary music here.... and my mom died on Dec 21. Oh, and I have an amazing 4 yr old girl. I have been hitting the bottle. A lot. In the last 6mo I have regained 15lbs. I'm currently waiting for insurance to approve a revision surgery for my sleeve. I went from 287 lbs to 215 and now 228. My restriction is still pretty good, but I am so stressed out that I have to believe my excess calorie intake is my alcohol intake. I'm not sure what I am even asking, but does anyone know a good way to battle alcoholism and a good type of doctor that is knowledgeable about bariatric issues as well as alcohol issues? Not specifically looking for a particular doctor, but any ideas would be great. Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app

    3rd times a charm!

Not exactly the same, but I had the band 2009, had it removed....may it burn for all eternity....then got the sleeve 2017, lost 70lbs....not goal weight, but good....and now I am suffering from fiery dragon vomit 2 yrs out, for people who like medical terms, GERD. SOOOO painful and miserable. So now I am trying to get a sleeve revision. Too scary for me to get anything messing with my intestines. At a minimum, I need a hiatal hernia repair. Third Revision...

I had the band, with minimal results. Went to the sleeve, AWESOME RESULTS! But now 2 years out, I have unbearable acid reflux. Like burning vomit saliva misery. I just went in to see if I could get a revision to my sleeve. My endoscopy is in a week to see what is going on. I refuse to get a bypass. I like knowing a tiny little banana of stomach is still alive and well. Just saying, I am on round 3. Over a 10 year span. Good luck [emoji106] Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app

6 days since surgery and my abs finally aren't hurting.

Your incisions are looking good! Totally different places that mine though. Of course mine was a revision from sleeve. I have one directly inside my belly button and one on the right side of belly. The others are all below my belly button. mine was also done robotically. I see another little cutie back behind Bruno. Did he get to go for a walk too? actually the more I look I think your incisions are about the same as mine were for sleeve.
  13. My only experience is Lapband to Sleeve. However, I had a former co-worker who had RNY and stretched out her pouch. Gained all her weight back, plus some. She had her RNY pouch revised to make it smaller again. I lost track of her, so I honestly can't tell you whether or not she was successful. Also, in my line of work I see a lot of medical records. I read a case where a sleeved patient had a revised sleeve.
  14. Your headline and first post are misleading. They imply / state you have GBP and are wondering if that can be revised. I would edit them to clarify you have band and want revision to GBP. That is very common here for the reasons you outlined later in the thread. But the title and first post seem to state you already have GBP so that's why the responses are confusing.

Sleeve to bypass weight loss concern

Oh yeah, I had just progressed into Barrett's but they think it's early stage and reversible. So insurance approval was rapid. I was rejected for LINX because they don't approve it for that if you have Barrett's, they want something more permanent and less experimental. Revision to GBP is such a different experience. I get full on 2 TB of dense protein but something like soup or pureed ground turkey with taco seasoning I can already have like 6 ounces. It really just depends on what's going to camp out in the pouch and what's going to slide through, so it's a bit easier to "trick" than a sleeve that would get full with liquids or anything else. They really aren't prepared to deal with people under 30 BMI getting GBP so I went to all the classes (and got asked who I was there supporting). After VSG and abdominoplasty (excess skin), the scar tissue made my incision pain much higher (I also had a hernia repair and I'm guessing you will need that too). And since they don't alter or VSG except for making the pouch, you will be hungry. It gets better each day but revision is for sure harder, especially when, in my case, I was fine with my existing weight but was miserable with GERD (which I never had pre-sleeve) and it's like I just want the GERD fixed I don't want to go through a whole transformational process again.

Sleeve to bypass weight loss concern

I was sleeved in 2012 and revised to GBP on 12/16/19 (3 weeks ago) at a 28 BMI. I was at close to my pre-sleeve goal weight but not my post-op maintenance weight, but still relatively fit. I have surprisingly lost 17# in 3 weeks which is a faster # and % of BMI than my sleeve -- and I was 320# then! So yeah you are going to lose weight. I don't know when it will stop since I'm 3 weeks out. I don't want to lose more than 10-15#, and I'd be fine stopping here since I'm almost under 25 BMI already. I get it, I hate how drawn I looked after rapid weight loss. I read somewhere on here that peanut butter was how one woman maintained post-op with a restricted capacity. I had a larger pouch and less bypassed than typical but that doesn't really help much the first few months when everything is inflammed. I am making a homemade egg drop soup most nights to get my calories over 1200 and it's good.
  17. It's true that GBP (revision) patients maintain at least a 10% or more weight loss than sleeve, so theoretically revision is just giving yourself a better chance. I revised for acid reflux and "only" had regained ~ 25# of 130# lost and was still < 30 BMI at revision. But I will say that losing the 17# I have lost since 12/16, which is a higher rate as a % and # as compared to sleeve, has made me much happier. With that said, I'm only 3 weeks out so I'm actually scared I will lose more than I want and look like an old man again with that drawn face. And then I'm scared that I'm going to regain as well. I guess I'll never be happy. Listen, our stomachs/bodies often betray us and make us hungrier than we need to be. And the food supply is stacked against healthy eating. So if you can get a revision to keep more weight off then I would do it whenever you are ready. It's a tough, tough, battle out there. If you have acid reflux, however, I wouldn't hesitate to revise sooner than later. I developed Barrett's Esophagus which is miserable to get at 44 and I'm hoping will go away with some healing.
  18. I had sleeve in September 2016. I’ve regained 50 of the 130 pounds I lost and don’t believe I can get back to where I was and stay there indefinitely. I think it’s too soon for me to be thinking about revision without spending at least six months making a hard effort to lose the weight. Frankly, I’m depressed as hell and can’t stop thinking about being fat.

    Oh, Just Another Plastics Story

ROFL. I guess I will be a self-pay, too. I guess it's not "enough" loose skin for insurance to pay (ok, I won't exclude being lucky so lets wait and see, I'm financially prepared already for the worst case though). I'm looking into the Avelar technique and would have to go to Austria then but I essentially cancelled all the thoughts about plastics (well, almost all thoughts...) when surgeons recommended a revision and told me to expect another 10% weight loss. 6.something kg doesn't sound that much but at a height of 167 cm it means more than two BMI points. However, I can have a mommy makeover myself then when the time comes around. Surgeons in Germany usually don't do breasts and tummy in one sitting when insurance covers the procedures because of how hospital stays are paid. (Germany's health care system is sick in its own special way.) ETA: Yes, gotta see the bright site of being a self-pay. One can get what's medically safe and not what some insurance company thinks they're going to pay for.

    Oh, Just Another Plastics Story

I have to do my anastomosis revision and hiatoplastic/gastropexia first I guess. 😔 Surgeon said that patients can have an additional 10% weight loss after this. So I definitely don't want to rush the plastics stuff.

    ❤My Revision Story❤

I can eat around the same amount as VSG. You may or may not feel additional restriction because of the revision. (The pyloric valve will no longer be there so measuring and eating by recommended amounts may be needed. This is why some people, not everyone, feel like they can eat more after revision) The process is slow going trying new foods after conversion but my eating is now nearly the same as with VSG I dumped with VSG so I had to learn to be careful way back then I'm just even more careful now. If it even looks too sweet/rich i completely avoid it. Hope that helps 💚

How much can you eat? Can you eat all foods you ate before the revision ?

1.5 years out & still throwing up?

It is nice to know I’m not alone, but I hate that it’s happening to you. They’re revising me to bypass, which I didn’t want, but it’s the best option for me.
  24. Sigh. Never thought I’d post something like this online, but I’m freaking out a bit & need advice! Also this could very much be TMI for many, so if it is, I apologize. I had major complications after my sleeve (4/2018). My new surgeon figured it all out, and I’m being revised to a bypass January 13th. I’m currently on my presurg liquid diet. I have a new boyfriend, and we slept together for the first time tonight. (Yay!) I have the Mirena IUD. It’s >99% effective for preventing pregnancy. This is why I have it. We used a condom the first go, but the 2nd & 3rd tonight... well, we didn’t. I know they’ll do a pregnancy test at the hospital before surgery, and they will cancel it if I test positive. So here’s my question - for that less than 1% chance, should I take Plan B just to be safe for surgery? I hate worrying over this. This is why I got to IUD... to not worry! But now I’m paranoid that this could mess up my revision. (Please don’t lecture me. I’m freaked out enough. Just need some honest advice. Thanks! 💜)

    NKCH/ Dr. Berghoff

I just went to him to get my acid reflux fixed, he does the LINX and also weight loss surgery. He recommended a revision to full bypass for me but my insurance just denied me. He seems really nice and knowledgeable so I'm sure you'll be fine.
