Wavering back and forth which surgery choose the sleeve, about 3 weeks pre-op
ajeeprider replied to ccrim03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too looked at the band and did not like the foreign body concept that was with me forever. The bypass with the old stomach hanging out in my gut and the re-routing of my intestines also did not interest me. The VSG seemed to fit the bill....I was still left with my tummy just a smarter size. My surgeon mentioned of course the research is still somewhat inconclusive since the sleeve is not been studied as much as the bypass. The long term success rate is still being investigated. I figured I would become one of the positively reported statistics.....the benefit of research! -
Wavering back and forth which surgery choose the sleeve, about 3 weeks pre-op
JennyBeth replied to ccrim03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon told me unless a patient is adamant on getting the band he doesn't recommend them anymore and tries to educate patients to go with bypass or sleeve. He said in another few years it won't be a procedure that will be offered any more due to the high risk of complications that are associated with it. -
Will my knees stop hurting?
SerendipityHappens replied to musiclover's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 41 and work 50 hours a week on my feet all day. I used to come home straight after work and put my legs up and cry from the pain in my feet, ankles and knees. When I gave up wheat in November I noticed a great improvement even without weightloss though there was still some pain after my shift. Now it's getting better and better. I now work all day, go for a three mile walk, come home, prepare dinner and THEN put my feet up.. yeah my knees and ankles still do ache a bit but NOTHING like before. -
Hello Everyone!!! Im 2 weeks away from surgery and all I've been hearing and reading is how gastric bypass is bad. I've heard that it makes u bald, you have long term complications, and that the surgery takes years off your life just the same as being overweight. My mind a mess. I've been so stressed since I've got my surgery date. Really thinking about not going through with the surgery. I don't know what to do. :-(

BANDLANDIA APPLAUDS LAP-BAND REIMBURSEMENT APPROVAL BY BLUE CROSS / BLUE SHIELD Cynthia Jones, founder of Dallas-based Bandlandia, Inc. (www.Bandlandia.com) said today, “We are extremely pleased that Blue Cross / Blue Shield has approved Lap Band surgery for its patients. The lap band procedure is the least invasive and safest of all weight loss surgery options and we have been working towards this day for quite a long time. The Lap Band will save many lives among the Blue Cross / Blue Shield patients.” Cynthia Jones, among the first U.S patients to have the lap band procedure, founded Bandlandia to offer after care options for those who have had the surgery. Blue Cross / Blue Shield has approved the lap band procedure for the more than 6.8 million patients in Texas, Illinois and New Mexico. Blue Cross / Blue Shield will now provide medical coverage and reimbursements for implantation of the Lap Band System for the treatment of morbid obesity. Inamed’s Lap Band System provides a life=saving option for the morbidly obese that is safer, less invasive and as effective in weight loss resolution or improvement of obesity-related health conditions as gastric bypass surgery.

2 week lean protein diet question?
oldoneyoungagain replied to brandnewme2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What kind of diet have they got you on. I've not heard of such a low protein diet. That is one thing you should be allowed to have, but I'm not your doctor or nurtionalist. I know when I had the band I was allowed at least 60 grams of protein, 64 oz. water, and a smart one tv dinner or one that is higher in protein and very few carbs. Pretty sure when I get bypass it will definitely be similar, as their shrink brought it up that I should go on it a couple of weeks before surgery, haven't talked with the doctor, that will come on 5/30 after he removes the band. So my answer would be "no" as long as it is lean, grilled, broiled or baked. -
Anyone wish they had gastric bypass instead of sleeve?
Girl on the Blvd posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After 2 years, I'm finally approved for surgery on April16, 2013. I'm excited and know surgery is the correct option for me, but I'm second guessing my decision on the sleeve. Does anyone regret they didn't get gastric bypass? I choose the sleeve for all the obvious reasons, but now wonder if bypass has better long term success over sleeve. Please share your thoughts and opinions. -
Yeah. I got my revision to bypass last week. So far, this has been easier than the sleeve, and I’m just exhausted, but nothing hurts. I had horrible GERD, so they corrected a large hernia and cut my prior sleeve even more, to make it look good (it was enlarged). After all, the surgeon said everything looked great, and I felt ok. I’m hungry, but I think this is more mental than anything. I need to lose around 50 pounds to meet my goal. I was around 20 pounds short with the sleeve, but I could not do it.

Psych Evaluation...im nervous
mrsto replied to jesse6657's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found the psych evaluation to be pretty weak. They want to get an idea of who you are, and make sure that #1, you're not suicidal, where weight loss surgery will push you off the deep end. And then they want to get an idea of your food issues; how you eat, when, why, etc. At the end of my session, she said that I was an excellent candidate for the gastric bypass. Because I tend to graze throughout the day, bypass seemed to be a better choice. With the band, they want you to have only three meals a day. Though her recommendation was bypass, she said that I would also be okay with the band, and she wouldn't absolutely say that it wasn't an option.....if that's the way I wanted to go. I'm guessing that all psych evaluations run a little differently, but that's how mine went. I would say that most ALL of us run to food out of boredom, emotion, etc., and the shrinks expect to hear it. But they will advise you on lifestyle changes, and what it will take on your part to work with the band. We all didn't get here because we simply love food & eat only when we are hungry. I would find it difficult to believe that any bariatric surgeon, or his staff, would think otherwise. But it's up to us to work on our heads, getting any and all support we need along the way. Good luck! -
Hi all! I'm new to the forum and am considering VSG.....I have thought about surgery for years, but have been afraid---surgery scares the heck out of me, but the future seems rather bleak if I don't get this weight off...........the big 5-0 is coming up soon, and it's unsettling.......with health concerns, I don't see getting to a healthy weight happening w/o surgery. I had a sister and a friend who had the bypass a number of years ago, and that just isn't for me. A friend had lapband, and I would prefer not to deal with the adjustments for maintenance. I went to the informational session last night, and meet with the surgeon next week. The procedure is covered 100% and need to go through a 3 month period before the surgery to meet with NUT & Psy.....will find out next week what hoops I have to jump through...........I know one will be my PCP.......I'm not sure if he will be supportive..... Thankfully, my husband of 29 years is onboard with this. Has anyone had Cigna, and were they good to deal with for this process? Thanks for all the helpful info posted on the forum.

Grateful every day
Julie norton replied to gowalking's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Enjoy everyday of your vacation! You work hard it appears .. So play hard now! Lots of stairs and walking and a gym on board if you choose . My choice was to bypass the buffets mostly and pay a nominal fee($5-10)for a "fancy" Sit down steak/ lobster type meal. Other ships have sit down/ waited-on restaurants for every evening meal. And...free room service if you just want a simple meal brought to you. Hope you have a blast with lots of family... And climb in and out of those tenders with ease, smiling as you vaguely remember your old, limited life. Bon voyage[emoji568] -
I think I'm gonna call on Monday. It just seems to get tighter and tighter. I had my last fill in November and could eat pretty much anything. It amazes me the difference 0.5 cc makes.

PLanning surgery timing need help
TQUAD64 replied to MiniBand's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was approved for surgery on October 15th and I had my surgery on November 11. I did pre-op lab work on November 7, which consisted of an ekg, blood and urine tests, and a chest x-ray. I had completed several other lab test requirements prior to insurance approval. My insurance is Blue Shield/Hills Physcians. -
BCBS Federal Denial. Anyone appealed?
ItsFinallyMyTime replied to college_chick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@College_Chick, My weight situation is very similar. Is it right at BMI 40 ish... but had yoyo success over past few years and am pretty healthy so no real medical documentation except when I was at a low point of weight. I got a letter from my doctor in which he listed.the highest weights I have been for the past 6 years (information I had to tell him because I have only been seeing him for 3 yrs) He wrote my basic info... years and high weight for each year on his letter head and that is what we submitted and got approved... It bypassed the low weights and just listed the high weights of each year... It may be worth a try... AETNA accepted it. -
Examples of Soft Foods
James Marusek replied to brindall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY gastric bypass 33 months ago. The directions that I received following surgery were: 0-4 weeks post-op Full liquids Weeks 5-8 post-op pureed Foods Weeks 9 and beyond Solid Foods When I hit the solid stage I found that some foods, especially meats were hard to eat by themselves. They sat heavy in my stomach for a long time. But I found that if I mixed the meats into chili or Soups, they went down a lot easier. I referred to these foods as soft foods. So if you bite into a steak soon and find that it is hard on your stomach, then you are consuming a hard food. Soft foods are as much about food preparation than the ingredients. If you want to consume chicken breast, then put it on a low boil for a few hours and add a bouillon cube. Cook it until it comes apart gently with a fork. It is now soft enough to eat. Soft foods are also produced by mixing food groups together. Make a hamburger and try to eat it. Hard food. But take the same hamburger meat and use it in chili, it is now soft on your stomach. -
Is one week off work enough?
Matt Z replied to Samantha1324's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would not recommend only a week off. For so many reasons. I took 2 full months off for my lap band, and 2 full months off for my revision to bypass. VERY glad I did! -
Hi, I have not been on this website in a long time. I was banded, in Mexico, 4 years ago and I am now looking to have a tummy tuck done. I had a consultation yesterday with a Plastic Surgeon and although he seemed to know what he was doing and had great pictures to show....he has never done a tummy tuck on a band patient. He has done plenty on gastric bypass patients, which to me is not the same. He told me that he does have experience with Chemotherapy ports and assured me that he could handle it. I also ask him if "minimal lipo" was included in the price of the tummy tuck and he said that he doesn't do the lipo during the surgery and if I wanted lipo done I would have to come and have it done before or after and it would cost and additional $3900. I have read plenty of stories from other patients that they received minimal lipo to scult and contour their bodies. So this bothered me that I was going to have to pay an additional fee for this. He told me that I would need an extended tummy tuck and the price is $10,000. I just figured if I was paying that much I wanted to make sure that my body was not going to look oddly shaped afterwards. So, my question to all you is do you have experience with any plastic surgeons in the PA area or even surrounding states.....but I think that it must be a reasonable distance. I live in Central PA....so I am smack in the middle and it is three hours to pittsburgh and three hours to philly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As I said, the doctor was very nice and I liked him.....but I am a little concerned about my port (I don't have a doctor to follow up with if something goes wrong since I had mine done in Mexico) and I also think that the minimal lipo should be included in with the price of the tummy tuck. Maybe I did not make myself clear when I ask the question. I wasn't talking about a procedure...I was talking about the contouring. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Got all my paper work today from my insurance and weight watchers!! I can start this week which I am going to on Thursday morning I am so excited to start but also really nervous honestly, I have to do 6 months which is 24weeks of WW, which will be broken up into two sessions and I have to attend at least 10 out of 12 meetings. Which ill be trying to go to all of them. And with each session I will need to lose 13lbs which is 26lbs in the 6 months (24wks) so I figure by November 28th I will be completely done with my weight watchers and I should be getting banded in December or beginning of January at the latest. so happy still can't believe this is really going to happen.

5 years ago the lapband was it, now no one wants to do them, will Sleeve be the same in yrs.?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Scottyd1264's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The VSG surgery is not new. VSGs used to be done years ago as the first surgical procedure for very heavy patients who needed a gastric bypass, but weren't good medical risks for the more complicated gastric bypass operation. Doctors went in and did a sleeve, which helped a heavier patient lose enough weight and get healthy enough that he/she could qualify (medically) for a bypass. And lo and behold, many of the patients did so well on the sleeve alone that they didn't need / want a bypass. After all, the sleeve doesn't have the big malabsorptive issues that bypasses do. And remember that bypasses are considered "the gold standard" of all WLS surgeries. And thus "the sleeve" was added to the menu of WLS surgeries. (There are now nearly a dozen different WLS procedures, including mini-bypass, duodenal switch, etc. Google is your friend if you want to learn about all of the WLS procedures.) And decades before all of this, VSG surgery was performed on people who had stomach illnesses that required removal of most of their stomachs due to terrible ulcers, stomach cancer, and other ailments. There's tons of research on those patients. Again, Google is your friend. In fact, Google is always your friend. While you're there, check out all the more recent long-term studies of VSG success. As you alluded to in your OP, the lapband has turned out to be problematic for many patients. The deal is that the lap band was never intended to become a permanent installation. If you know anything about medical devices, you know that foreign objects in the body often fail and cause problems. Again, Google is your friend. I think that a good medical analogy for VSG surgery are surgeries done to remove tumors, bone spurs, cancers, gall bladders, appendix(es?), ovaries/uteruses, tonsils, etc. Although we may need to monitor the body thereafter or take some supplements, nothing artificial or mechanical is put into the body to replace those organs. I also think that any sleeved patients who don't bother taking all their prescribed supplemental Vitamins, minerals, antacids, etc. or who don't get their annual blood panels done after having VSG surgery are not taking responsibility for their health. -

Anyone gained the weight back?

I tell you what is funny and that's the fact that the bypass comes with malabsorption! I mean you have to really be going out your way to gain it back. -
How to get solid protein down after 3 months post op
James Marusek replied to BonsW's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
You may want to incorporate protein bars as a supplement, instead of protein shakes. At around 3 months post-op RNY gastric bypass, I switched over to using these. I used Quest protein bars. These bars were good in that they had high protein, minimal sugar and also contained fiber. They also came in a lot of different flavors. A Quest protein bar contains around 220 calories and provides 21 grams of protein. A Muscle Milk Light protein shake [2 scoops of powder in a 16 ounce glass] contains 210 calories and provides 25 grams of protein. So they are comparable. Also your food volume may be great enough now that you can start to derive your required protein from your meals. I provided some recipes at the end of the following article. I relied heavily on soft foods such as chili and soups to get in my protein. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf They went down much easier than harder foods such as steak and chicken and also had more flavor. -
Have you ever heard of anyone who had the sleeve that gained the weight back? I know I have heard of the bypass ones gaining it back but what about the sleeve ones?

Switched Procedure From Band To RNY Today
ElleG replied to Kathy Pitcher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I currently have a band and I'm trying to get a revision to the bypass. The band was not the right choice for me. I would listen to the doc. It sucks to go thru the pain of the surgery for nothing, now I have to do it again. I have faith the bypass will be the right thing for me. Best Wishes -
When did you see results?
Herraven replied to porter11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 9/30 and so far I have lost 25.2 lbs. The only exercise I get is cleaning house and doing errands. I have had one fill earlier this month and my next fill is 12/8. I pretty much eat what I want. My problem with food was not bad food choices, but portion control. When I go to the movies I get the kids tray that comes with a little popcorn and fruit snack instead of the tub of popcorn and gallon of soda. I only have 1cc in my band and I do notice a small difference but not too much. I would have lost more weight, but I had a minor set back from celebrating my best friends 40th birthday with senseless calories from the multiple margaritas that were consumed LOL!!! We had so much fun, but the down side is I gained several pounds from those calorie infested drinks and the airplane ride seemed to alter my weight too. I have a friend that had the bypass and she says that when she travels she notices a small difference in her weight even though her eating habits haven't changed. Idk, but when I got home I lost a few pounds in two days. Then it seems a week later I lost the rest of the weight I gained. I haven't noticed too much change in my clothes because the are all stretch band and I always wore my tops bigger because I didn't like my tops to hug my fluffy rolls. I hope all of our expectation come true with our weight loss, we might have to have more patience then we thought....
