I agree, chewable, liquid, or dissolving vitamins would be a better option for a few months. My program requires it for the first 6 weeks. I found all mine on Amazon.

What protein bars are good AND ok for soft food stage? There are days that I'm so busy and not home to eat. Like today. I forgot a protein shake and ended up getting chili from Wendy's for lunch. I would like more options that aren't fast food. Thanks!

I still visit once in awhile. I'm still working on losing. I have found that I started drinking Fairlife High Protein milk all night long. So I've been working on controlling my carbs to keep them under 30 grams like my plan recommends. I definitely have made changes but more changes still need to be made. Now I have new challenges, such as if I eat a protein only or super heavy protein meal, I will fall asleep shortly after. Yup, much like that Turkey on Thanksgiving 🤣. I still have 35 lbs to lose to get to my goal. I am pretty confident that I will get there but it's going to take those lifestyle changes to get there.

I took chewable vitamins the first couple of months - are those available in Japan? also, you WILL lose muscle. As we lose weight, we lose not only fat, but also bone and muscle. It's OK to lose some of it - we need a lot of "infrastructure" to hold up our excess weight, and once we lose the weight, we don't need as much of that anymore. But the goal is to not lose TOO MUCH muscle. This is one of the reasons we're supposed to eat a lot of protein - to keep us from losing too much muscle.

Vitamin Intake
summerseeker replied to rockystart94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All this is normal. Your doing great. Water and medication and vitamins are the hard at the beginning. Your stomach is so swollen and sore. My surgeon said my new swollen stomach was the size of the inside of a pen. After a month you will begin to see improvements. I felt as if the only things I did all day were trying to drink. One day it just got easier. Space your vitamins out all day, get liquid ones where possible and gummy multivitamins if you can find one you are happy with. I had to crush some medication and take it with yogurt or honey. Its vile though. If your team allow then try vitamin patches. If you have trouble with acid heartburn ask your team for anti nausea medication/ PPI If you try warm, freezing and cold drinks you may find you tolerate one better than others. I did so much better on hot drinks, it caused less of a spasm. I never went down the protein route, my surgeon believes in dairy produce. So I drank full skimmed milk instead. You can try thinning down your protein drinks with water or milk You are about to have a stall in your weight loss that will make you wish for it back PDQ. Its called the 3 week stall. You will loose muscle. The more you walk and exercise when you can, will slow this. You will end up with a smaller frame so do not need the mass of muscle that hauls you around now . I never exercised, just walked. My muscle loss is just right. I look good in clothes. -
Hi So I’m two weeks post op and currently struggling to get keep my water intake and vitamins intake. Whenever I take a pill I feel severe discomfort like heartburn for 20 mins and need my husbands help to rub my chest off to move it down. This makes it difficult for me. I have restrictions to have only a spoonful of water each time and wait for 3 mins between the next spoon. This makes it tough to get enough water and my skin is becoming flaky. I also find it difficult to swallow anything with protein powder in it . I think I am losing ideal weight 1lb per day but it also includes muscle loss which I would like to avoid. Any advice or tips that I could get on taking multi vitamins and water intake. Thanks in advance.

I've been having daily headaches. I meet my protein and fluid goals every day. Could it be that I need more calories? I average about 430 calories a day. I'm in week 5/soft foods.

I have had Sushi twice since surgery both with rice, 1st time was around 3 months, was only able to have 2 to 3 pieces, and last time was around 5 months, I was able to have 4 to 5 pieces. I feel like I do not get to chew properly the rice so I have limit it since and because the protein content is low compared to the amount of carbs eating.

Been Reading Nightmare complications ?

I agree. Even if your insurance partially covers it. You have to continue it for life so in the long run.... more expensive. Find out what your out-of-pocket spending limit is for the year. Mine is $4200 meaning when I have paid that amount towards deductables and co-pays, all the rest of the bills are covered 100% for the rest of the year. Don't figure your share of the bill as 20% of the total cost of surgery. Unless your insurance doesn't have a yearly limit. I think most do. All my bills collectively with pre-op testing came to over 80K. At 20% I would have had to pay 16K without a yearly spending limit. I also have a high deductible HSA account so your out of pocket could be even lower than my 4200. Unless $5800 is your limit? Another option if your part of the bill is too much at once is a CareCredit card. If your doctor participates, it will finance medical bills at 0% interest for 1-2 years. I have used this in the past for elective surgeries like Lasik eye surgery. Also many healthcare facilities will let you set up payment plans with no interest as well. It's worth checking out. Good luck!! -
Hi, I had surgery (Mini Gastric Bypass) in Jan 2023 and I am losing weight. Total weight loss is 50lb (in 23 weeks) . However most of this was lost in the early month and I have slowed to approximately 1lb per week, if that. The slower weight loss is fine, I can cope with this because its going in the right direction. What has be very anxious is that i find that I feel like i have no restriction and can eat anything. To maintain the weight-loss I need to tell myself not to eat. I am fighting with the 1lb weight loss each week to make sure its a deficit, terrified that it will go up. I don't feel like i have a tool. Are there any other MGB patients that can eat anything - bread, rice, chocolate, cereal, potatoes. I do suffer nausea if I don't eat sufficient protein but i am so worried that i have gone through surgery and i will spend the rest of my life 'dieting' with little help from my tool. Anyone else in the same position? Thanks Cals

Hi. Congratulations on going thru the surgery! You will lose weight, don’t worry! People have stalls and your body is reconfiguring your new system. I have been advised to stick with the doctors orders, hold off on all temptations and focus on staying hydrated and getting your protein in. Once you have healed you can add in an exercise regiment and a diet if you still aren’t satisfied. I think the soft food diet is cottage cheese, yogurt, beans and puréed foods. stay strong!

Eating out for the first time
Nepenthe44 replied to LindsayT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My family is big on eating out so I started going to restaurants again at 3 weeks. At 5 weeks, we went to our usual Mexican restaurant which doesn't have soup, so I ordered a shrimp cocktail with steamed or boiled shrimp in a tomato sauce. I brought my food scale and ate ~1.75 oz of shrimp, which was 4 medium, without the chunky part of the sauce. Ended up having that for another 4-5 meals. I just took it slow and chewed really well. When a server asks if that's all I'm having, I say yes. If they asked if I liked it, I say I loved it, which is always true because anything that's not a protein shake tastes amazing to me. They don't want or require an explanation. Their concerns are a) did I miss some of this person's order and b) is there something wrong with the food. -
How do you curb cravings?

I know I'm late to the party, but thank you for posting this. I've been CRAVING hot chocolate and I never thought about heating a protein shake up. -
Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.
Shanna NYC replied to areyoukiddingme's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 41 and today marks 8 weeks post-op from my bypass. It was my choice to go the bypass route from jump and my surgeon agreed with my decision. Yes in the very beginning, you are not only limited on what to eat, but even the capacity to eat (or even the desire). It would be the same with the sleeve either way because of the swelling the small pouch can only hold so much. It gets easier as time passes. To date I have not had any dumping issues. I know it is not the same for anyone regardless of which surgery, but I have tolerated all foods I've tried to date. I have been cleared for basically everything in moderation, still trial and error as I haven't tried it all yet. I have eaten out several times since about 4 weeks post-op and most places easily have things that can be ordered or slightly modified to suit our needs. Soups or a protein and veg are fairly easy to find on most menus. Grilled chicken sandwich minus bread with a side salad. Breakfast is even easier. I either end up with a to go container for another meal or two, or my boyfriend eats extra, lol. I do enjoy cooking and have had no issues with finding recipes to make my own. Flavor and variation is key. You can easily keep your cookbooks and find some substitutions for higher fat/carb/sugar items. I think it's much easier now than many years ago to find healthier alternatives. And while I know many people can be successful with the sleeve, I personally know a number of people who have had more regain. Some regret not having the bypass, or have gotten revisions years later. -
If you're drinking protein shakes, make sure they don't have "whey protein concentrate". You want the isolate, not concentrate. Those give me all kinds of tummy problems.
-
I can put away a whole egg too. Depending on what it is I can eat about 2-4oz. I'm about 5 weeks as well.. As far as breakfast. What about turkey sausage, oatmeal with protein powder, or yogurt. I'm still mostly drinking my breakfast.

I feel like a pig because I have no trouble getting down an entire boiled egg heck most foods I eat I’m eating the whole 2 to 2.5oz of it with no problem. I’m never hungry but I do have my watch set to alert me at 8am, 12noon and 5pm to eat. Yesterday was the first time I actually felt full but I’m never hungry. I’m 5 weeks post op from RXNY. Only eating soft foods only protein no veggies until week 6 post op. If you know of anything other than eggs I can eat for breakfast please post I’m so sick of eggs -
Do you like ice cream type of deserts? Your fav instant sugar free pudding non fat sugar free Greek yogurt (less sweet use plain, if you want sweetish use vanilla) 2 scoops 30gr protein powder. See which works best. Freeze in popsicles Make your pudding add yogurt and protein powder and blend well

La.nena, I just started soft foods today and don't think I could do it with just 1 protein drink either. Saw my doctor today and he said to try and replace the drinks, but make sure to keep supplementing with them to hit my goals. For reference, today I had 1/2 egg 1/3 of a greek yogurt mixed with vanilla protein powder 1 cheese stick 75% of a turkey stick 25% of a ricotta bake (which was yummy) I honestly could have done without the cheese stick as I am not sure that I was really that hungry, and it was decently close to dinner time (like 90m before). I ended up hitting the same protein level I had yesterday, but got 10g more of fat and 2g more of carbs. Overall, very happy with the day.

I found tuna has a lot of protein. You can add unflavored protein to anything liquid or pureed. If you are set on foods for protein, set a timer and not wait until you're hungry.
-
So the last 3 days I can’t meet my protein goal. I’m on soft foods. Only 1 protein drink a day. I’m never really hungry. I try and eat and take 3 bites and I’m done. I meet my liquid goal but that’s it. My dr wants me to eat 3 to 4 small meals a day and try not to do more then 1 protein drink. I’m never hungry 😑

Awwwww - David, I sure am glad to see yo on the other side. Pleased things have gone well for you and that you are up and about - I know they try to get you up and about as soon as possible. I had my surgery on 1st and am still doing ok. I too am pacing myself and can now drink almost the required minimum litre and a half of water per day and am also getting better at getting in pureed proteins. Went out for a longer walk today to get some banana's to puree with protein yoghurt - it was a longer walk but i just rested up a little afterward. Getting stronger with each day. For those of you having surgery on 6th - go on - you got this xx

Colorado Springs/Denver area pre-op folks

I have a bunch of unopened protein broths (mostly bone broths). I would love to give away to someone who has surgery coming up. I don't want to throw it away. Or if anyone has a suggestion on what to do with it, I would love some recommendations. I could make soup with it, but it is mostly single serving, dry pouches. I am willing to meet somewhere public. If this post isn't allowed, I'm sorry. -
I'm so sorry that happened. And I know how much hurtful words from your spouse can really shake one at their core. Could you find a marriage counselor who does online video calls? I think therapy is the only viable option to get to the root of what's going on. Or maybe a bariatric surgery support group for partners. Someone had mentioned that he may feel threatened by your weight loss. That is not an uncommon problem; especially if the partner is insecure. Maybe try to build up his security. Men normally respond to verbal praise. For example, in the first few weeks after my surgery, my husband was a very grumpy person to be around. When I commented on it, he blew up and said how overwhelmed he felt with work, taking care of a large portion of the home responsibilities, that it's been all about me and my recovery, and a few other things. I took some time to process, and in the right timing, I thanked him for all he's doing and told him that it did not go unnoticed. I reassured him and built him back up. Since then, things have been going really well. Your therapist may have some other ideas.

If this happened to me, I would feel like the rug had been pulled too. Being overweight as a woman means feeling like you’re not good enough, that your worth is tied to your weight. When you start losing weight and this happens, it would make me feel like I’m not good enough no matter what I do. I would feel so defeated like, where do I go from here? But since I am outside looking in, I can tell you that you DO matter and your weight does NOT define your worth or value. If your husband isn’t attracted to you and apparently never was, you have to decide for yourself if HE is good enough for YOU, if this type of relationship is what YOU want. How you go about figuring this out is up to you… a counselor, therapist, etc are all great options. I also wonder, from experience, if he is a little insecure himself (about you and your weight loss). At this point there are probably few people who know you as well as he does, and he would know what to say to derail you even if he doesn’t realize it. Just thoughts, may or may not hold water. Just know that you have done incredibly well, you should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished!!
