Did the doctor himself give you second thoughts?
Macy6 replied to JodiAnn210's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, that is crazy, that must have been very worrisome for you. The only thing my surgeon ever gave me second thoughts on was gastric bypass, he said he recommends it highly but wanted me to consider the sleeve. He did talk about his 0 leaks, 0 strictures, 1 mortality, a couple excess bleeders who needed transfusions. Following surgery I found out one of my friends has a brother who had bypass in June, by my surgeon, anyway I guess he ended up in the ICU for bleeding issues following his surgery. Obviously I didn't expect my surgeon to be like I had another one, but it did make me a little nervous, but I was already post op. It was a relief when I met with my surgeon again pre op after nearly 7 months and everything was still 0 though. -
Is anyone on Ft. Campbell or Clarksville TN area or just using (TriCare) Insurance ?
MGLAW142 replied to MGLAW142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I have been working with my Primary Care doctor and a nutritionist for the last year I have went from 269 to 223 but over the last few months I've just hit a plateau and nothing is happening not gaining nor loosing so he suggested the surgery at my doctors visit on the 16th. He wanted me to do bypass but I looked at it and researched it and it's just not for me so I decided on the sleeve. Maybe that is why it didn't take as long to get me in because I had already been working with him and maintained my weight ???? I'm not sure. I just thought it was weird b.c everyone on here is having to wait months and even yrs to get approval. -
so I finally figured out NUT =nutritionalist...
Sassygirl06 replied to A_ReNUDE_me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nut actually had the gastric bypass herself, and then became a nut after. She was almost to skinny...but I think it helps her to feel more empathy for the patients, because she knows exactly what it is like. Glad you realized what a nut really is, so now you don't think we are all talking about our nuts, and sounding like we are nutty! Lol -
My paperwork was submitted yesterday for insurance approval!!! I have been fortunate that my coordinator has been on top of things so much and actually sent in my info a few days before she said she would be able to!! Now on to some pre surgery testing and at least 2 weeks if liquid only diet!! Hoping for last week in October/first week in November date!!

He said that it's possible that it could go back into place, because it has in the past (but granted it wasn't this bad before), but he said it will probably keep happening over and over again. He said the band itself is malfunctioning and it wasn't my fault. I don't blame the band entirely, but from the number of personal friends I've known who have had the same thing happen, it can't be just US. KWIM? I go in on 8/1 for the results of the EGD and I think that is when they will schedule the removal. I'm going to INSIST on another fluoroscope so they can see it and determine if it really does need to come out. I know, he said it does right now, but I'm praying it corrects itself. Even then, for some reason I get the impression that he's going to start limiting the amount of new bands he does, and strictly focus on Sleeves and Bypasses. He made a good point in saying that people who have had weight issues all their lives really do need a PERMANENT solution, and although LB was supposed to be permanent, it's proving not to be. He said he just got back from a conference and the general consensus of all the doctors were they are appalled by the complication rate with the bands that have been in 2+ years. I haven't researched a lot on the net, but my little circle of people I know who are going on 2+ years with the band, out of 4 of us, 3 have had slips and 2 need it to come out. Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I bawled my eyes out all the way home yesterday, and then drowned my sorrows in a bacon cheeseburger and fries last night (emotional eater much?!). I know, it wasn't the best choice. OK, it was absolutely the worst thing to do (and my body is reminding me all day what eating crap feels like), but I was sticking it to the man!! Won't be doing that again. LOL

Just had my stress test, not what i expected...
B-52 replied to horsegirl315's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The nuclear stress test is the most accurate, but most insurance co. Will not pay for it unless you have a Hx. They inject a radioactive isotope into your bloodstream and then have you lay on your back while the machine takes photo's of your heart from different angles. The isotope shows up as a bright red/orange in your cardiac arteries showing the blood flow to the heart. Then you get on the treadmill and the goal is to get you 85% of your max heart rate for 5 minutes. They immediately give you a 2nd dose of the isotope and take a 2nd set of pictures. Before and after, the after is with your heart under stress. They compare the 2 sets and can determine any cardiac arterial blockages, and what %. I have had cardiac surgery (angioplasty) to insert a stent in one of my arteries based upon my stress test results. A severe blockage would have meant cardiac bypass surgery. (open heart) A cardiac arterial blockage will most likely result in a infarct if gone unattended. I now have a stress test every year. This was before being banded, and all a result of being obese. The Anesthesiologist is the one who is most paranoid about cardiac clearance before putting someone under. -
Unsupportive Family
justkeepsmiling replied to Lyra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm from a close family as well, we all live within five minutes of each other and we're all in constant communication, everyone up in everyone else's business, things like that. Initially, I started with just telling my mom what I was thinking about and that I really wanted her to back me. At nineteen, I'm good to do a lot of things without my mom's say so, but this wasn't one of them. So that was in November. My sister found out on accident when she heard me talking to the doc. We're fourteen months apart, she's younger, so we're close but we fight all the time. She's completely unsupportive and has stated this on several occasions, but she refuses to give me any reasons. We decided to tell my dad after I was approved because if you go to him with anything half assed, then he'll ask you why you don't know all your information. But then, when he found out I'd been keeping it from him for so long, he was livid. I don't think I've ever seen him so mad. That was Saturday and he hasn't spoken to me. He refused to drive me back to college, my sister had to do it. He also stated that he was completely unsupportive and he gave plenty of reasons - you could do this without the surgery, you're not thinking, you are being ridiculous, ect. - and he also will not support me. So after that, I don't think I'm going to tell my other family members, but then what if they react like he did if I hide it? My friends - those I've had forever and my roommates that I've only known in the six months since I've transferred here - took it better then my sister and my father. So I don't know what to think. But I can relate. I'm sticking by the fact that I'm doing this for ME, not for anyone else. I'm doing this for my health and to better my own life and we just have to stick with that. Good luck! And let me know if you need someone to talk to! -
I have been researching this form of bypass and am leaning towards having it. Is there anyone on the forum who can give me more information ? Anyone who has had it done or know someone? Much appreciation.

Anyone having surgery beginning of 2014?
DaddyMarie replied to Brandi7011's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@1day I work for the Department Of Transportation and we maintain Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and every winter I hire and reinstate and manage over 400 winter Employees who man 80 during storm season. I do all the hiring and record keeping, all the upgrades and retirements and comings and goings of the entire region which includes 11 counties... Winter is out busiest season and my position plays a huge roll in the operations. Winter usually consists of November through March but it's really all depending on the snow. Right now I'm in the middle of hiring, drug testing, doing physicals an new hire orientation for 60 new hires. Tuesday I'm doing an orientation for all 60... It's a lot.. However, she knows how to do all of this and I have don't most of everything already so in hoping that by the time my last new employee package is filled out there will be an eye to the storm.. See with the band I would only be out for a week.. But with gastric or the sleeve I'm really unsure....I may just lie and say in going through my pre surgery testing they have discovered that I have a hernia and they need to expedite my surgery! -
Preop Diet is Not Something to be Suffered Through
Leepers replied to Leepers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Camille, sorry to hear you've had such a hard time. Life can definitely set you back. Just start with the next meal. Keep the sweets out of the house. You can do it. Why can you not eat sweets with bypass? It doesn't seem it would be any different. -
Supervised Weight Loss DIet/ Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal and Weight Gain
sunny2day posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been required by my insurance to participate in a 3 month supervised weight loss plan prior to submitting a request for weight loss surgery. I weighed in on November 07, 2013 and I have to do my final weigh in on December 19, 2013 prior to my doctor submitting a claim to my insurance, blue cross blue shield federal plan. My question is this, I believe I have gained about 4 pounds since my last weigh in and the whole time I have been on the diet I have lost. I am guessing I did not do as good as I thought throught the holidays. Has anyone ever gained weight in the supervised diet with blue cross blue shield federal and got denied or approved. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. -
Will Power, Appointments, & Decisions!

I'm a 33 year old married woman, and I have been obese my whole life. At my highest, I was just over 400 lbs. At 30, I was diagnosed was with diabetes, and I've been trying to conceive for over 8 years. I recently decided I had enough and moved ahead with the journey to weight loss surgery. I chose the sleeve because bypass seemed too altering. My consultation with my surgery was on Oct 28th. and I weighed in at 388. I was lucky to get my nutrition appt that Friday, November 1st. (385.5) At my next nutrition appt., I get my surgery date which I'm gunning for January or very early February. So far I've been pretty good. I feel like God has been taming my appetite and backing my will power. The last I weighed myself I was around 379.6. I have been tempted of course, but i've been holding out. People have noticed the changes. I do a Protein shake for Breakfast. I eat lean protein first then the veggies, very little carbs for all other meals. I did a serious cleanse of my normal diet. I'm very proud of myself. I feel better. I sleep better. i need to start the exercising soon. My concerns are these: if i want to get down to my ideal goal weight of 150 is the sleeve ideal? my surgery said not really but exercise and diet would be very vital. i've been diabetic for 3 years, on insulin for one. I'm worried with the sleeve I will still be diabetic. I just hate to have hind sight bite me in the butt! -
Undecided And My Concerns....3 Month Pre-Op Diet
Chris2020 replied to Happy2BMe1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Happy2BMe1 Like you I am a bit worried about the mortality rates for the VSG. However, I have still decided to have the sleeve instead of the band. My surgeon who is one of the leading bariatric surgeons in the UK said that he hardly does bands anymore. They have too many complications and a lot of people need additional surgery. I think the VSG is a good alternative and not as dramatic as the bypass. However, there is still a risk, but hey what's the risk of you staying at 345 pounds. You are relatively young and might not get any problems with your weight, but problems do often come up when one gets later. I've just weight up the pros and cons of doing the VSG vs doing nothing and the VSG won even though I've got very young kids (and I certainly want to be around to see them grow up). In the end, only you can make this decision though. -

Anyone used a Dr. in The Woodlands, Texas area??
jam265 replied to Lynne731's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
My friend used Dr. Spivak for gastric bypass, and if I hadn't found Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver, I would have used him, too. -
Well officially I have 13 days and 40 minutes until surgery...not that I'm counting! Just wanted to say hi to everyone (Becca especially!)

2 questions....from a pre op newbie
WillowsAngel_32513 replied to AprilKeepingItOff's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you eat too much sugar and your digestive system responds with a surge of fluid and it cause inflammation and nausea as well as tachycardia and sweating and a lot of pain. It usually happens with bypass, rare in the sleeve as our food is still digested normally.. -
Did anyone like the band better?
Band07 replied to OldMomOf3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's prob easier if you do a quick search and then scan the images of full bypass VS mini but mostly it's less surgery time, less invasive (only one new connection to make) easier recovery and less risk of complication with just as good and most believe even better weight loss. The stomach pouch is longer (like the sleeve) but they do bypass a little more of the intestines (around 7'). -
Did anyone like the band better?
cute1 replied to OldMomOf3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the band around 2005 and had no weight loss. I decided in 2008 to go in for a adjustment and they found the problem with the port which was changed and I lost 85 lbs and kept off until November 2013. I had a slippage. I decided to go to Mexico for a sleeve since my insurance wouldn't pay anything for WLS. I had the sleeve in January 2014. I have gained 15 pounds since the sleeve now. I have never felt like others with the sleeve. I have always been hungry. I am now scheduled for a resleeve May 18th -
Approved - Sleevie Here I Come!
crickee replied to crickee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am hoping the week of November 3rd, or before Thanksgiving, I should find out tomorrow. All I have left to do is surgeon visit and hospital bloodwork. It took my insurance a little over a week and I was on pins and needles even though I knew they had everything they needed, I was afraid they would find a reason to deny. Good luck and hang in there! -
Anyone switch from one procedure to sleeve?
st2011 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was approved for bypass this week and have a tentative date of January 8th. It took a long time to get my approval and during that time did a lot of additional research and now feel the sleeve is the right choice. Has anyone been approved for one type of surgery then after insurance approval decided on the sleeve? I'm not sure what to do. My current surgeon doesn't do the sleeve so I will have to find a new surgeon too. -
open RNY gastric bypass? or lap?
Lovelycurves posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone had this done? What's the pros and cons of it over lapriscopic? My surgeon decided to leave the practice and now ill be seeing the other surgeon (which things happen for a reason) and he does both lap and open but prefers to do open. He's pretty honest and reather do open so, that's what I'm thinking of going with, partly because he sutures and they disolve with open instead of staples being in my body forever with lap. I just wanna hear if anyone has any thoughts on this. I know its one long cut (which I'm ok with) instead of 4-6 different little cuts. Anyways just curious because surgery is going to be in april and wanna decide before this on what may be better. I am definitely leaning towards the open though, also what's the down time for both? -
This article is about gastric bypass patients and alcohol. Alcohol (in any form) contains alot of sugar. Sugar is a huge no-no with gastric bypass. While it's true that alcohol will affect us quicker because of the small amount of food in our systems, this really doesn't apply to us.

Had my first appointment with the surgeon this morning. Lots of information and I'm a little overwhelmed. They explained all 3 options they provide - roux en y, sleeve and band. They explained the typical success rates of each and how much weight I could expect to loose with each based on the averages of their 3000 patients. Now I'm even more confused than I was before. He said he can't recommend 1 surgery over another, but that I'd see the greatest results with the bypass. However, he also said I'm the perfect candidate for the band because I'm young and have few health problems and no mobility issues. The target he set for a healthy bmi is a loss of 132 pounds (I can't believe I'm carrying around an extra person, I've been in denial). He said based on the averages I'd loose 75% with the bypass, but only maybe 30-40% with the band. He stressed this is only an average....but there's no way to known if I'll be average or outstanding. He also said the band doesn't always work. I hate the thought of going thru the surgery and seeing no result. His PA said if it were here, she would go "all in" and get the bypass. She described the band as "you on your best diet." They said I don't have to decide until we set the surgery date. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed and this is the first place I wanted to go.
