I agree with everyone else - go back to basics. Protein first, then non-starchy vegetables. Weigh/measure and track your food. It's too early to consider plastics (plus they don't really do plastics for weight loss, that I'm aware of - they lipo sometimes for small, stubborn fat deposits and/or to even things out, but to make people lose weight - no, not really...). And normally revisions are done for medical reasons. I'd give it another shot - you could probably drop more weight if you really buckled down.

sleeve to rny
bikerchick519 replied to kata0683's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I wouldn't consider plastics until you've been at or close to goal weight for 6 months to a year. It doesn't seem like you've given it enough time yet to even consider a revision. I would get back to the basics and on track with your eating and try to lose more before I'd make any decisions. Good luck whatever you decide. -
Vsg to mgb?!
bikerchick519 replied to Builtbetter78's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve and then due to acid reflux and my sleeve stretching I got the mgb. Unfortunately for me the reflux got worse after the mgb so now I'm getting a full bypass on Feb 3. What I can tell you was different for me was with the sleeve I had no pain and lots of energy. With the mgb I was really sore for at least a week and I was exhausted for at least 2 maybe 3 weeks. It also took longer for me to go from one phase to the other like clear liquids to full liguids, etc. I had to work harder to get my water in also, really small sips. I also found out about dumping which I didn't have with the sleeve. Hardly any sugar and I was laying down, sick to my stomac, heart racing, head spinning and then exhausted like an adrenaline dump. You learn quickly to avoid sugar! It gets better over time but here I go again with the revision. -
sleeve to rny
Losingit2018 replied to kata0683's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Why are you considering rny or plastics? To lose more weight? Have you tried tweaking your diet? You may be able to lose more weight without revising your surgery I personally would not consider plastics unless I was happy with my weight and stable for awhile. Give us more info and we will try to help you with your questions. Are you still sticking to your eating plan? -

Hello All! I am a newbie to this thread but I did have VSG in 2016. I lost over a 100 pounds unfortunately I failed my sleeve so now I'm going back to Mexico to have the mini bypass done. Notice I said I failed my sleeve not my sleeve failed me. I went back to my old habits. I still Have quite a bit of restriction but I'm just eat all of the time I have joined a support group and I'm also going to counseling for my eating disorder. Hopefully it will work this time. PLease don't judge but I am a heavy smoker and I am 41 years old and really worried about the surgery. I would like your opinions on the revision and any tips that anyone can offer. Thanks and well wishes to all!

I am scheduled for a gastric sleeve revision and hernia repair. Can I get some feedback on how long I should be out of work?
-
I did but I am not typical. I knew in my heart that the bypass would have been a better surgery for me from the start. I feared the malabsorption and possible complications from bypass so I opted for the sleeve. never experienced gerd in my life. Until after my sleeve. about 1 year post sleeve I had gerd and a hiatal hernia. Ended up having to revise to bypass. Some of the things that made me think hard about having the bypass in the beginning was that I did not want to have to do surgery twice. having said that, there are many people that do just fine and are successful with the sleeve.

February Surgery ?
bikerchick519 replied to PSquared_vsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm Feb 3rd. I'm getting a revision from mini gastric bypass to full bypass to fix acid reflux. I only have a 3 day liquid diet, first 2 days are full liquids and 3rd day is clear liquids. I'm going back to Mexico because insurance won't pay for the revision. They said the acid reflux is a complication of my prior wls which is so not true! but whatever insurance does whatever it wants. -
Revision if you already have a gastric bypass?
John04073 replied to Polishanita1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had full RNY bypass in 2005 and lost approximately 80lbs. I was able to keep the weight off consistently for about 10 years until I suddenly lost the “Feeling Full” after meals and the weight started to creep back on. I struggled with almost a constant feeling of being hungry, which I had never had, after the RNY bypass. I returned to my original surgeon to no avail. His feeling was that I must be doing something different and not following the same lifestyle. I was referred to another Bariatric doctor who found a gastric fistula (essentially an opening in the pouch), and via surgery installed a metal clamp (also referred to as a bear paw). While this seemed to help initially, something still was not the same as it had been for the first 10 or so years. After much research and visiting several other Bariatric Specialists over the last few years, all while the weight slowly continued to increase, it was recently discovered that a portion of my pouch had attached and formed a connection to my original stomach, thus allowing food to be processed by both the new RNY pouch/digestive path as well as the original stomach/digestive path. Also the metal clamp previously installed was missing, and probably passed in the normal digestive process. This leads me to where I am today, having been informed that the best solution at this point is for a RNY Bypass revision. They will be going in and separating the pouch from the original stomach again, and suturing/stapling both sections off. I am waiting for the official revision date/insurance approvals etc, but the doctors office does not think it will be an issue at all. Fingers crossed that I will be back on my way to weight loss soon. -
sleeve to rny for weight loss?
biginjapan replied to coffeewomanakra's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had to pay for my sleeve out of pocket (went to Mexico) and now after gaining back 50 pounds in 2.5 years (!) I'm going to get a revision to gastric bypass in early March. For me, I think I had two reasons why I failed - first, I was distrustful of what my surgeon did. I came out of surgery feeling great (unlike everyone else on my floor) and had no problem eating or tolerating different foods when I got to those stages. One of the doctors told me that I had a really long stomach (!) and I wonder if that has allowed me to eat slightly larger portions as a result. I did well in the first 8 months after surgery, I was 100% dedicated to portion control and watched my macros, but I fell off the wagon at my dad's birthday (cake) and slowly but surely over time I was able to consume more, and eat more things I shouldn't have, over time. I knew going into the surgery that I had some food addictions, and unfortunately the last couple of years has taught me that these will be problems for me the rest of my life. There will be no "just once in a while" type of situations - sugar is a huge problem for me, and this next time around I know it will be gone for good - I'm not willing to fail after a second surgery (again, that I will have to pay out of pocket). I don't think anyone can know if your insurance will pay for a second surgery (only your insurance can tell you that), but if not, then I would look at cheaper options for self-pay. -
sleeve to rny for weight loss?
AZhiker replied to coffeewomanakra's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think you have to really explore within yourself what caused you to fail. Yes, you had a lot of stress in your life. But why did you turn back to eating? This is what you need to work out, because RNY is not a magic bullet, either. The same thing can happen again. There is no guarantee that your life post RNY will be any less stressful. IMHO, I think you should go back to square one, as a previous poster suggested. Work through the issues. See that you can start losing weight again. THEN consider a revision. Look up your insurance company's position on line. Some will pay for a revision if a first surgery failed. Others won't. so you have to look it up. Print it out so you can study it very carefully. If you decide to go ahead, consult with another surgeon and show him how you have learned and grown from the past experience, that you have built a good support network, and are strongly motivated to succeed. -
Question of lower BMI patients
BayougirlMrsS replied to bthompson82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My journey started in 2009 with the band. I am 5'2" and my SW with the band was 232lbs. My weight for 7+ years was 143. In march 2017 i got the flu and my band slipped and had to have emerg. removal. I search everywhere for a dr. to do a revision because i knew that i couldn't control my weight alone. Everyone said the same thing.... You don't weigh enough... Over the next 2.5 years, i put on 30lbs. and still, i was told i didn't weigh enough. I was weeks from going to Mex when i found my dr. here. He qualified me as a revision. So 8/28/19 i was revised to the sleeve. Starting weight 173.5 (bmi 30-31) Of course i was also cash pay. 14k. today i weigh 134.6lbs. -
Question of lower BMI patients
elcee replied to bthompson82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 153 cm and weighed 74kg in 2009 when I got my band. I got down to approx 50kg, slowly regained and sat in the mid 50s for a while and then the weight snowballed rapidly. I had a revision to RNY last January at a weight of 66 kg. I am now down to between 48.8 and 49.5 and maintaining fairly easily. -
sleeve to rny for weight loss?
catwoman7 replied to coffeewomanakra's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
depends on the insurance. Most will not pay for a revision unless it's medically necessary (e.g., severe GERD, mechanical failure of the original surgery) - although even then some companies will only pay for one surgery per lifetime. You can always call them and ask, though - you never know. if your sleeve is still working, though, you can still lose the weight. You just have to go back to the way you were eating that first year (not necessarily all the way back to protein shakes, but the whole protein first, then non-starchy vegetable thing. Tracking your food. Weighing/measuring things instead of eyeballing portion size. Etc. It usually takes longer the second time around, but people have done it... -
sleeve to rny for weight loss?
coffeewomanakra posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey there--- I had the gastric sleeve 5 years ago. My life has been a whirlwind of change since--- Good change, but nevertheless hard! long story short-- left an abusive marriage, lost my job, autistic child, etc At any rate, I only lost about 80 pounds from the sleeve surgery initially. Since then I have put about 50 back on. I have spent the last 3 years being mad at myself for being a failure. I met with the surgeon a year ago and he told me no way would he revise my sleeve to a bypass because I wasn't following the protocol. I left there hysterical. I still have about 200 pounds to lose and numerous comorbidities. I am active, walk 7+miles 3 x a week and do yoga 2x a week. I guess my question is, Has anyone had a similar experience? Will insurance pay for another surgery? I am not sure what else to do at this point! -
How do you know if you stretched your sleeve
BayougirlMrsS replied to Fancy Face 2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
100% agree. When i had my band i never went in for "unfills"... i just adjusted my portion sizes... I learned valuable lessons in all those years and i truly believe it's why even after my band removal and being without i gained only 30lbs..... That being said, it still was 30lbs and on someone 5'2".. it's not a good look. I went from 143 to 173.5 in 2.5 years..... Did i look terrible...No, Did i feel terrible... YES... I felt like a failure even though i didn't have any tool I thought i should have been able to control my eating better. I quickly was reminded what "hunger" felt like again. With the band, i was never hungry. I didn't have to have the sleeve done and in any other situation, i would not have even qualified for it. But because i had had the band my dr did it as a revision (2.5 years later). And because i was lucky enough to have 14k in my bank account. I worry about the pouch stretching.... this is why i portion everything... and If i'm still hungry.. too bad, i just go hungry. As of today i at 135.... SX 8/28/19 Feeling like my old self again.... all my clothes that were too tight now either fit or are to big.... whoop whoop. -

MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX
UnderTheCaliSun replied to NYCGAL000's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Wow! I had no idea one could have a Nissen after an MGB. I had a Nissen and they took it down to do my MGB. I haven't really had any issues since but I've prepared myself for the potential of bile reflux. I thought a revision to full gastric bypass was the only option. I'm glad to hear this. I didn't know a Nissen would be effective for bile reflux since it creates tension at the esophagus and bile needs to be stopped before it enters the stomach. Thank you for the info. Can you share which doctor did it? -
How do you know if you stretched your sleeve
biginjapan replied to Fancy Face 2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I definitely stretched mine - I lost 100 lbs but gained back over 50 lbs through poor eating habits. You have to be vigilant - just because your stomach can handle more food, doesn't mean it should. Go back to eating smaller portions and watch how many calories you are eating. Another reason why I failed is that I stopped tracking as diligently as I had before. So even though I've tried to "re-set" my sleeve, nothing has worked, and I'll be going for a revision to gastric bypass in about a month's time. -
Surgery in Monterrey mexico
MarinaGirl replied to laura071693's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Thanks for the great info! Good luck with your revision surgery! 😊 FYI - I had a LINX Reflux Management device implanted in March 2015, so a couple of years before MGB surgery (April 2017); it helped for 18 months and then acid reflux returned in Oct 2016. As part of my July 2018 abdominal surgery to resolve bile reflux, I also had the LINX device removed since it wasn’t useful and even more importantly, because the one I had was recalled by the FDA in April 2018. I have a family history of esophageal cancer so minimizing/eliminating GERD is paramount to my long term health. Thankfully, I’m doing very well now. 👏 -
Input needed: Sleeve to Bypass? Revision Surgery

Sleeve to RNY Bypass - March 2020 - TJ, Mexico
biginjapan replied to alighterkaan's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'll be getting my sleeve to bypass revision in March as well (March 3rd), but I'll be getting it done in Europe. Even though I had a successful surgery with my sleeve in Tijuana a few years ago, overall I was not impressed with the whole experience, so decided to try elsewhere (I live in Japan so a big overseas trip is a necessity for me no matter what). What's interesting to me is that the pre- and post-op diet recommendations are vastly different than to what I'm used to, so we'll see how that goes. -
Weight Loss on Pre-Op Diet
biginjapan replied to ResaRoo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it's normal (although everyone is different). I also find that the heavier a person is, the more they lose on these types of diets. I've noticed this not only on sites like this, but also when I was a part of weight watchers. People who were morbidly obese had very large drops of weight on any kind of restricted diet (10 pound or more a week), where as that would be both unusual and alarming for anyone who was within a normal BMI range. The first time I did this I lost 21 pounds in 21 days during my pre-op diet (of course it was not one pound a day, it stalled and dropped over 3-5 days usually, but the end result was this). I'll be starting my pre-op for my revision surgery in February, so hopefully I can get similar numbers. -
