June 2022 surgery buddies
Mariann812 replied to Jessica1024's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m going to try to tackle a couple different issues here. Two weeks ago I was nervous, anxious, scared, and snapping at everyone because surgery was 3 weeks away and I was seriously questioning the sanity of doing this. I cried, I yelled, I ate…then I calmed the heck down. 🤷🏻♀️ The most difficult, nearly impossible food item I have had to turn from is Coca Cola. I did a very relaxed eating plan…couple of Protein Shakes, a salad starting 3 weeks before surgery. I knew that one week prior to surgery, I absolutely would follow my doctor’s pre - surgery plan to a T. I cheated once in awhile, but with surgery scheduled for June 8, I knew that on 5/31, I would be compliant. And, I was. I stayed on plan yesterday., I’ve been completely compliant today. 😊 I found, thanks to a recommendation here, that I love the Premier Peanut Butter chocolate shake. I have had a difficult time finding a shake I like because the pre-surgery selection for my surgeon was Premier or Bariatric Pal. Today I tried PB and chocolate and I’m good! FWIW, I’m doing every.little.thing I can to be nice to me in every category except putting food in my mouth. I went away with my daughter for the holiday weekend and relaxed and was nice to me. I took an entire day off from school today for my pre-anesthesia visit at the hospital, took a long nap this afternoon. Yesterday I was on a tele-visit for post-surgery care with an extremely well-informed nurse who also has undergone bariatric surgery. She was a wealth of information. This morning’s hospital visit really helped calm my nerves. We have amazing health care in Wake County, NC, and I am repeatedly impressed with the care that I have received. I feel much less stressed, and again very comfortable with my decision to pursue bariatric surgery because of those 2 surgeon-required pre-procedure appointments. I’ll continue to update as this moves forward. Thanks for reading. 😊 Starting Weight: 222 CW: 213 GW: 128 Height: 5’2” Age: 67 RNY, Hiatal hernia repair, gastric bypass, gallbladder removal -
This is exactly what I was told and was also advised to to the Bypass and not the sleeve. Thank you for the tip about the recliner.

Naked and Afraid
lizonaplane replied to The Hacker's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's normal to be scared. I agree, lapband is not a great surgery. Bypass has the best stats as far as reversing diabetes. I generally like the idea of following your surgeon's advice or getting a second opinion if you're still not sure. -
good decision not to do lapband. Very few surgeons place those anymore because so many people have had problems with them. It's largely been replaced by the sleeve as the non-RNY option. I'm always freaked out before surgeries - I think it's pretty normal. That said, I love my gastric bypass and would do it again in a heartbeat. Best decision I've ever made.

I just had my first meeting with the surgeon and I am getting very anxious. After studying the three surgeries available I met with the doctor and after a long conversation he convinced me the LapBand was not the best choice and that I should consider the Gastric Bypass. Looking at the facts I had to agree with the surgeon. Here are my particulars: male, weight 240, age 70, height 5' 8", currently using Rybilsus to control my type 2. Having read the book from the weight loss surgery program, I am now frightened, anxious, afraid and overwhelmed! How do I move forward? Sent from my SM-P610 using BariatricPal mobile app

Vaping after Surgery
Michelle B7 replied to Stars3825's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don’t pre judge me I was helping out second when you do a direct lung hit it bypasses your stomach and goes directly into your lungs and you you exhale it back out third I make my own juices with zero nicotine so I know what’s in them my juice is flavoring which is in everything, vegetable glycerin which is in all cakes and canned beans and is food grade safe and that’s all I put it in it btw wrong carcinogens are not found in vapes because it’s only used in a tobacco product vape don’t have tobacco so relax and don’t tell someone something about things you have no knowledge of just saying have a nice day -

sleeve vs bypass
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to bandproblems's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm also band to bypass. Bypass revision is next month. I got GERD with my band... and GERD after wls sucks. You have wls thinking you're going to improve your quality of life, only to develop GERD... then you get placed on PPI's to prevent the acid issues... and the PPI's come with side effects, and now it's recommended to not take them long term. I got a kidney stone due to overuse of PPI's... so I would say if you have wls and are dependent on the use of PPI's longer than the normal post op period, it's a crutch. How can you say your GERD that you had previous to wls is gone if you're still taking an acid reducer? It's probably just masking the GERD that's still there. Come off the PPI and see if the GERD is there or not, then you'll know if it's really gone. Why have wls if you have to stay on a PPI? -
Yes, I had Bypass surgery.
-
I went with the bypass because I had GERD, and I didn't want it to get worse with the sleeve. A bonus was that the GERD actually went away after my bypass. It's strange not to carry TUMS in my purse anymore! If you have GERD, definitely get the bypass. If not, then it just comes down to your personal choice. Watch the youtube videos, do your research, and see if your surgeon leans one way or the other. Good luck!!

sleeve vs bypass
gaddbaby replied to bandproblems's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello! I recently had band to bypass conversion. My surgeon explained the benefits and success rates of both and suggested the bypass. At 2 weeks post-op, I'm happy with my decision. Best of luck to you on your journey. -
sleeve vs bypass
catwoman7 replied to bandproblems's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
if you have GERD, go with bypass. Sleeve can make that worse about 30% of the time (and some people who've never had reflux issues end up developing them after sleeve). If you don't have GERD, then it pretty much comes down to personal preference. you don't have to take meds the rest of your life with bypass - but you do have to take vitamins for the rest of your life - but you'll likely have to do that with sleeve, too (there's one person on here I know of who doesn't have to take vitamin supplements with her sleeve surgery, but most sleeve patients do). The difference, as someone else pointed out, is that slacking off on your vitamins has worse consequences for bypassers than it does for sleevers. I love my bypass and would choose it again if I had to make that decision today. But some people want to go with sleeve, for one of the reasons you mentioned (they feel it will be less invasive - although cutting out most of your stomach and throwing it out also seems invasive to me, so....???). Check with the surgeon and see if he/she feels one would be more appropriate for you than the other - but they're both good surgeries and you'll find people on here who've had great success with both. -
Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass
mrs.melmcc replied to Im4miracles's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you for the responses. Came here because I am experiencing the same. Eight years out from the sleeve and have had GERD ever since. I had an Upper Gi this morning and hernia was confirmed. Endoscopy this Thursday but prior to today doc had already discussed converting to bypass. This is not the quality of life I want for the rest of my life so I plan to do the bypass if my doc feels it is the best course of action. -
sleeve vs bypass
mrs.melmcc replied to bandproblems's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am speaking from my personal experience and would recommend the bypass. I got my sleeve 8 years ago and have had GERD since (was not an issue prior). It has progressively gotten worse and I now have a hiatal hernia as well. My doctor is considering a revision to bypass to address the issue. I also have issues with vitamin and protein deficiencies. I have been on Prevacid for the entire 8 years since my surgery. I realize everyone is different but research some of the risks of GERD after sleeve. It is not fun. -
sleeve vs bypass
lizonaplane replied to bandproblems's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You still have to take vitamins with sleeve, but the risk of vitamin deficiency is lower, because sleeve allows you to absorb all the nutrients you are able to eat - the issue is if you are focusing only on protein and can't eat too much, you are not getting enough nutrients. Sleeve does have slightly lower rate of complications, but both are pretty safe. With sleeve, you have to worry about GERD, so if you have GERD now, it's probably better to do bypass. However, certain medications have absorption issues with bypass, so depending on what medications you take, it might be better to do sleeve. I think you need to talk with your surgeon and see what they recommend, and get a second opinion if you still aren't sure. I wasn't sure, and after two surgeons suggested sleeve, I went with it. I think that was the right decision for me. -
Hi everyone, I had lap band surgery in 2010 and went from 330 lbs to about 215 in 2016, however, I started having some problems with the band where I could barely eat or drink anything and kept loosing weight rapidly. Went to the doctor and they did an upright xray with contrast and you could see that everything was stuck in the esophagus. The doctor said the band had to come out. Obviously I didn't want that and begged them to remove all fluid from the band and wait another week but that did not help. It turned out that there was a lot of scar tissue from the band around where it was installed. The doctor wanted to do a conversion during the band removal but the insurance did not approve since I was 'too skinny' and did not qualify. I asked the hospital if I could pay the difference between removal and doing the sleeve since they already had me there and all the staff, etc. but was told it was not possible and it would be $24,000 which I could not afford. After the removal I gained all the weight back and now I am between 320-325 lbs again. I had been with two employers since then but like most of them they specifically exclude bariatric surgery nowadays. Now I am with a new employer and they will apparently pay for it. [sorry for the long background story] I am consider whether to get a sleeve or bypass. After doing a lot of research I think a sleeve would be better since it is less intrusive and the stomach function pretty much remains intact and you don't have to take medication for the rest of your life. What do you all suggest?

Any tall (6+ feet) FEMALE, bypassers and sleevers given a goal weight?
fourmonthspreop posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
As I'm getting closer to my "goal zone" (in between 220-190) I'm wondering if anyone else who is female and six feet or taller was given a goal weight and what that should be. I distinctly remember my doctor showing me a chart during my initial consultation that put my sex and height at a desirable weight of 160 lbs but then my surgeon quickly said, that's not realistic for my frame/body and that these charts were outdated and inaccurate. He instead said I don't have a goal weight but told me he typically likes to see his patients under a BMI of 30 to reduce co-morbidities with being obese. Since 220 puts me in the "overweight" range, I'm sticking to that as a realistic goal until I achieve it and will assess the situation from there (how I feel, look etc). I'm wondering if any females who have big frames, broad shoulders, and are tall, like 6 feet and above, were given goal weights. What do you think about it? Is/was it achievable? Are you happy with how you look? -
On May 9, I had a revision to my original gastric bypass RNY (2004). It’s called Endoscopy with Argon Plasma Coagulation. Basically they go down your esophagus to the pouch’s exit and zap it to create scar tissue which makes the opening smaller. I’ve had to go back to the post-surgery meal plan. I’ve worked my way up to chicken. I’ve lost 21 pounds since. It seems like it’s a slower loss than before, but maybe my body has grown accustomed to having the smaller stomach, and maybe the gastric juices aren’t as concentrated as they were. Here’s me now (top) and before revision (bottom). I’m glad this forum is here. I need the support from fellow bariatrics.

Hi guys! I’m new here and I just had my surgery on 5/26/22. I’ve been overweight for the majority of my life, and I’ve been eager to start this journey by getting to know others who have done the same. My dad got gastric bypass and was able to keep the weight off, but he got it done a long time ago. So his advice is a little outdated. One thing I’ve noticed is that people keep emphasizing how good I’ll look once I lose weight. And it kinda sucks bc I didn’t do this for that. Sure, it helps. But I did it because I want to be healthier. Rambling aside, the only issues I have right now are maintaining my fluids and protein. And the gas. How was everyone else’s first couple of days? Any advice for a newbie?

May Surgery Buddies
Lou30102015 replied to The Traveler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So i had my gastric bypass done last Thursday 26th May. I had it done under the nhs (i live in the UK) but the actual op was done by my nhs surgeon at a private hospital to help get through the waiting lists left from covid. The surgery i have been told but the whole ordeal was horrific. I was treated like a piece of meat. No one spoke to me to explain what they were doing etc. It took 7 attempts to do a simple eeg before theatre in which they ripped the pads off many times causing my skin to break open and bleed.. ouch. They then all be run me to theatre when i was manhandled onto the operating bed (I'm disabled) where the private theatre staff just grabbed my arms and legs pulling in all directions strapping them in things. No one once spoke to me to explain what they were doing. I was terrified. The next thing i knew the man said I'm putting you to sleep now. I wanted to scream STOP YOU'RE NOT OPERATING ON ME but i was so scared no voice came out. Once awake i was taken to a private room and basically left. They didnt even give me a buzzer to call the nurse. I was discharged less than 24 hours after surgery in absolute agony and scared out of my mind. I have never felt so alone and afraid before in my life. It has left me feeling extremely anxious and frightened have have made the wrong decision. My dietitian just rang me for 4 mins basically saying she had email me my diet plans... no nurse from the team has phone me yet but i was told this would happen on my 1st day home... completely unexceptable -

Hi i had my bypass last Thursday so I'm 4 days post op. I still have chest pain but apparently its just trapped wind left from when they inflate out stomach... the pain is horrendous but does get easier. I find it helps to lay on my left hand side. This also helps to pass the gas too -
First post op date
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks! Yeah it went well but I wasn't feeling it tbh. He luckily didn't offer food or anything but we talked about weight loss because he said he really wants to lose 10 lbs and I can't believe it but I told him I was on a weight loss journey and recently lost a lot of weight. That was the first time ever I've been comfortable enough with MYSELF to talk about that so I'm very happy about that. In the past I would freeze up if a date talked about diet or exercise (even when I was losing weight in the past, I had such a negative relationship to myself and my body) but it made me realize how much I've grown as a person to be able to speak openly about that. I phrased it like yeah I'm on a weight loss journey so I'm very conscious about what I'm eating and drinking right now. Didn't mention surgery but then he was like thats great i want to lose 10 lbs, maybe for our next date we can go on a run together LOL Not sure there will be a next date for me. I did that for experience and to flex my dating muscle a bit. He was very sweet But I'm also moving states so I'm not particularly interested in long term relationships at the moment. He did give me this funny business card at the end. I wonder how it will be in the future though. I don't know why but I almost don't want to tell whoever I date I had gastric bypass until I'm at my goal weight. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
My golden rule is: Don't beat yourself up, but do take accountability and work to change it. I ate myself into 130kg. There were certainly external factors that influenced it - I used to turn to cigarettes in times of stress, and in the long process of quitting, turned to food instead. Got addicted to sugar. I have an addictive personality, so I'm prone to it. I regret getting myself there. I felt horrible, and hit really low points in the year before my surgery. It's not a nice place to be. BUT - I did take charge, I did make the steps towards my last option to fix it with getting my bypass. I'm responsible for my obesity, but I won't beat myself up about it. We're human, we make mistakes, some of them affect our health, but there's nothing that self-flagellation can fix. Instead, embrace the steps to change, and cheer yourself on. Your first appointment towards fixing yourself is a big step in taking yourself back - be happy with yourself for taking it! xx

I am having a hard time not blaming myself for being 100 pounds overweight and having high cholesterol, high blood sugar, fatty liver, and other health problems. How did I get here, I've been asking myself. I was under the most extreme stress of my life for the past several years. I lost track of the fact that stress can affect the heart and cholesterol, etc. or I would have handled things differently. Now I might be having heart problems, which I NEVER though would happen...I'm very careful not to eat foods that are high in saturated fat. Genetics are working against me. My father and brother were about 100 pounds overweight when they had sleeve surgery, and a few cousins had gastric bypass surgery. I've taken medications that affect the metabolic system, so I think that system is totally dysfunctional now. I feel like I've failed my body by not taking care of it. It makes me very sad. On the other hand, I feel like this body isn't really mine. The real me is hidden in this body. But I swear to you I've had the best of intentions. I have done some things right, like eating lots of vegetables and fruits and drinking tons of water. I'm making an appointment with a bariatric surgeon to discuss gastric bypass surgery. That day can't come soon enough. I'm looking forward to being on the path that you all have bravely taken. Has anyone else had feelings like these? I seem to be overcome by them lately.
