    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

    Hi everyone, I have been dealing with severe constipation (third week since surgery). I did a bit of research and found something that is actually working for me, it is called Fiberex, it is basically concentrated prune juice with fiber. I tastes like concentrated sweet prune juice. I drink one little scoop (comes with it) in the evening and everything is fine the second day. I do not know if it will work for others but I thought I should let everyone know. Of course, before you start it, please consult your medical professional. I was just sick of taking other pharmaceutical products and tried to find something natural. Also, I put together a list of veggies, legumes that have high amount of protein and that might help you when you start incorporating them in your diet. Please see below. I hope this helps some of you.   2. strawberries and ketchup chips. ya, i know, kinda weird. i was in a rush out the door and i was hungry. 188 calories. ate it all. Lesson for the day: keep healthier options around for a quick grab, lest you lunch becomes strawberries and ketchup chips. 😜
  3. I am a month out and lost 5 lbs since surgery. So I understand your frustration. I’m starting to think this was a very expensive mistake. We will see in another month what happens. I’m going back to just protein shakes and water. Maybe that’ll help. Maybe it’s cuz I’m premenopausal or just getting older. Hormones are wonderful sometimes lol. Trying to be positive and work the program, Trust the process.

    Hi Aimee! I have surgery one week after you. We have some things in common. I, too, worked in healthcare. I retired from nursing many years ago to get my degree in counseling. So LOTS of research on surgery options...for years. It's finally good to move forward. I have two friends who had the sleeve almost 2 years ago. Watching their incredible journey is inspiring. I start my liquid diet on July 13th (x2 weeks). I'll look forward to hearing about your progress. Feel free to reach out.     Can’t Get to My Goal Weight

    yes it is tough - and I agree with everything Arabesque says. It's a struggle just to maintain my weight (eight years out). I try to eat fiber, healthy fats, and plenty of protein every day to try to keep from getting too hungry (all three are filling). I also keep sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, and raw vegetables around (and fruit, too - although that has more calories) so that there are "safer" things to eat if I can't control my hunger. But I know it's still a challenge.

    Pre-op diet for revision starts on the 22nd!!

    I like Premier banana cream ready made shakes, Premier caffe latte ready made shakes, Fairlife chocolate ready made shakes, Atkins chai ready made shakes, SlimFast mocha cappuccino ready made shakes (all shakes are protein shakes and some also have fiber). I like chicken, beef, and veggie bone broths (and I add corresponding bouillon cubes to deepen flavors). I like sugar free popsicles (tropical flavor). I like the blue protein gatorade. I like Premier peach protein water and also their tropical punch protein water. And I like sugar free protein puddings (specifically banana and chocolate ones). That's going to get me through my 1 week pre-op liquid diet and my 2 week post-op liquid diet (that's how long my doctor has us do it).

    Can’t Get to My Goal Weight

    First, congratulations on your weight loss. It’s a fabulous achievement - please remember that. The hard truth is not everyone gets to their goal weight. Your goal weight is a number you chose for various reasons significant to you but your body has it’s own goal weight - its set point. This is the weight your body is happiest at. It is a weight that’s easiest to maintain & your body will keep pulling you back to. Your set point is what makes it hard to lose weight & easy to put back on any you did lose back. The surgery lowered your set point from what it was but you can’t control what the lower level will be. Be careful as you can increase your set point again by eating to excess & making poor food choices. Yes, increasing your physical activity & building muscle will increase your hunger. The trick is to balance the hunger with the calories your body needs. Check your basal metabolic rate to give you an idea if what calories your body may need to maintain. Seeking support from a therapist may help especially with your cravings & late night hunger. Many find therapy very beneficial to support their weight loss & manage their maintenance. Therapy will help you identify what’s behind your cravings & hunger & reflect on your relationship with food. Your surgeon or team should be able to refer you to a suitable therapist (one who specialises in disordered eating & is knowledgeable of bariatric surgery). All the best. PS - I found it helpful to get the ‘bad’ food out of my house. If it’s not there I can’t eat it. I know it’s not always possible especially if you have a family but even if you got rid of the your favourites would help. Try to pick a healthier option. Want sweet try some fruit. Want salty or crunchy try roasted fava beans or chick peas. Of course even ‘good’ food eaten to excess will lead to weight gain.
  8. Hi all! I’m 18 months post op from my VSG and I’m still 24 pounds out from my goal weight. My highest weight was 313 and surgery day I was 289. I’m currently 204. I was able to get down to 197 a few months ago but I have gained some back. I’m battling constant hunger. I have been strength training a lot the past 6 months, which at first I attributed to my increase in hunger, but the past 2 months it’s gotten out of control. I eat anywhere between 100-130 grams of protein a day. Drink 120 ounces of water a day. Take my vitamins. I just can’t shake this hunger, which in turn makes me have bad food choices, usually later at night. Has anyone else struggled with this at this point in their journey? And what advice do you have? I’m terrified of weight gain and desperately want to reach my goal!

    This sounds exactly how I felt the whole first week after my surgery on June 2. It was so much harder emotionally, mentally, and physically than I was prepared for. I had issues with dehydration/diarrhea, incision area allergic reactions to the liquid bandage stuff they used, it was hard. You will get through it, please just keep that in the back of your mind! I started sipping a little caffeine (some coffee with my protein shake) and it helped me feel a little more like myself. Each day I had a little more energy. Now I feel almost totally normal! It will get better, just hang in there until it does!

    Im 11 days post op and im kind of regretting this. I miss eating, and by that i mean chewing and having that flavor. everything i can eat right now is soft and bland. I cant wait till I have more options and maybe i wont be so down on it.

    I mixed the ricotta, shredded Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, 2 eggs, Italian seasoning, and a scoop of unflavored protein powder and spread in a small baking dish (they used ramekins but I don’t have any!) and topped with smooth spaghetti sauce and a little more shredded mozzarella. Baked for like 30 minutes at 425 I think. SO GOOD.

    Eat a Lean Cuisine? Tell me your experience!

    I've eaten them in a pinch--with the caveat I tend to eat them in order of protein, veggies, and will either leave or eat very little of the carb item (a lot of their meals include things like potatoes, rice, pasta, etc). I'm not sure how far out from surgery you are, but a lot of the standard Lean Cuisines include more carbs/less protein than your team would probably want you to eat, and may be more than you're able to consume right now. You'd probably be better off eating a Lean Cuisine panini than a "standard" one from a restaurant or another brand that isn't intended to be "diet food". If it's a craving that just won't quit and it otherwise complies with where you are in your recovery (i.e. you're not on purees or soft foods anymore), you could do worse.
  14. Hello everyone ! Had my surgery yesterday. I am doing good. Except for gas pains. No other pain. So far so good. Gas is really bothersome though. I am doing a lot more walking today. It’s 4 am and I am up and walking. When will this gas pain be gone 🤔. I have been having only water since yesterday. Today I plan to try some clear protein . This was my first surgery. funny thing was I remember rolling into the operating room and then the next thing was in the recovery. I thought for a min the surgery was not done or something and I was reaching for my stomach to check 😂. After a while I asked nurse if it was done. She said Ofcourse honey 😅
  15. Well, found out tonight what happens when you eat too fast…don’t do it. Five weeks post op gastric bypass and was wishing I could throw up. The pain was awful and I was eating protein!! I can’t imagine how you would feel eating off plan.

    I was feeling so weak that I started yesterday on egg drop soup and it made me feel wonderful no pain no nothing, jello, pudding, , I ended up on ensure extreme protein that was the only one that I could drink without the gas, water diet juice so far so good

    Right now I was doing jello and chicken broth but today I introduced pudding and Thai coconut soup and boy was that soup so good. So far everything works. I’m entering my 2nd week so I’ll add back the protein shakes and hopefully try eggs this week.

    Something crunchy

    So I bought roasted chickpeas and roasted edamame. I tolerated them both really well. They are nice because they chew to a very small consistency. My only complaint is that it makes me thirsty because they are so dry. They satisfy the crunch craving, and I get protein and fiber, so win. Thanks for all the suggestions! Keep them coming if anyone has other ideas.

    I just opened my case of Fairlife Chocolate Protein shakes and wow are they great! It almost feels like I’m probably not supposed to have it, it’s so good! 😂 I’ll be on the lookout for strawberry banana! Virtually all of my local stores just have vanilla and chocolate. I thought I got lucky finding root beer float and cafe latte. the cafe latte are great too, but I put them aside temporarily because they have caffeine and I’m trying to avoid it. It was a pain to get myself off of Diet Coke. 😬

Check with your dietician for meal ideas & guidelines about portion sizes, calories, nutrient goals, number of meals a day, etc. Then measure, weigh & track your food every meal & then make the necessary changes. If you are eating too many calories, swap out your food choices to more nutrient dense foods & foods that are lower in fats, sugars & carbs. Look to whole & low or no processed foods. If your portions are too large, reduce the sizes. Make sure you’re hitting your protein & fluid goals every day. It will always be better to eat real food than have a protein shake once your through those initial stages post surgery. I didn’t have another shake after the liquid stage. I know some people do continue to have shakes but I’m a believer in learning & establishing new & life time eating habits & food choices that work in your lifestyle as soon as possible. Shakes aren’t really sustainable in the long term & can feel like you are restricting or limiting yourself. I believe people put on weight after being on a shake diet because they relied on the shakes & didn’t learn how to make better food choices or change their eating behaviours. Fluctuations while you are losing are to be expected. Your weight loss isn’t a consistent straight line down. It will go & down & plateau. As long as the general trend is downwards you’re okay.

    Finally Ready for Food Recs!

    I agree to check with your team especially your dietician first & they’ll give you their recommendations, foods to avoid or include, when to introduce certain foods, any nutrient goals (maximums & minimums), etc. Focus on eating your protein first, then your vegetables & finally & only if you are able, any carbs you are allowed. Some meals I only could eat my protein. Keep your proteins moist. As @The Greater Fool said sauces can really make a meal but also they can help to avoid the foamies from eating food that is too dry or coarse. I started with softer meats first (I ate lots of minced meat dishes initially as they were easier to eat & digest) & gradually added in denser proteins like steak. I loved leftovers & packing up single portion meals. I still do & my fridge & freezer are full of them. Great for nights you don’t feel like cooking, to take to work, etc. Don’t be surprised if your tummy can’t tolerate some foods. This is usually temporary while your tummy is still sensitive & fussy & throws the odd tantrum (like a two year old). Though it can happen randomly in the long term or there may be odd foods you really can’t eat again. I made scrambled eggs yesterday. I eat eggs quite regularly but yesterday my tummy said nope & up they came. Don’t know why. I still can’t eat bread, pasta & rice, too heavy in my tummy, though I can eat small amounts of pastry.

    Finally Ready for Food Recs!

    To be honest, "solid food" is pretty useless. Chocolate bars are "solid food." Your medical team should really define your plan. My plan was 3 meals of 3oz protein and 1oz non-starch veggies, no starches, no snacks, and no protein drinks. Planning meals around that was pretty easy: A chunk of meat and a bit of veggies. For me, well prepared food with subtle or not so subtle spices or sauces were perfect. Almost by definition, each meal is more or less "balanced." Everything was based on my preferred flavor profiles. Big flavor sated every craving I might have encountered. As I write this, I am munching on yellow curry chicken. Mongolian BBQ is another favorite I go for at the slightest provocation. Thai is another flavor I go hard for. Early on, chicken and steak were hit and miss, and as leftovers they were miss or worse. Once I got to solid foods, I portioned my meals as 3oz protein, 1oz veggie. I often prepared meals in advanced. I rarely managed eating the whole package, but it was there in the rare case I did. Leftovers were discarded. Sauces really make the meal. I'm sure you, like I, have favorite flavors. It takes an amazingly small measure of even the most caloric flavor to make your dish delicious. Personally, I like spicy (such as Thai) , or creamy (such as alfredo), sweet (such as BBQ), or no sauce at all like prime rib, ribeye, grilled chicken. What do you like?     Crackers with protein, dried chickpeas and beans, nuts, pumpkin or other seeds. Air fry thinly sliced veg like carrot, sweet potato, zuchinni, beets to make homemade healthy chips. I plan to do that at some stage and eat with dips like hummus, tzatziki and salsa. Cucumber if allowed?
