10 weeks out from surgery- struggling to find what works
BabySpoons replied to MelbaT's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I too could eat something one day and be sick with it the next. But at 9 weeks out I am finding it to happen less and less. Thankfully. I have revisited a few foods that made me quite ill before and seem to tolerate it well now. Like steak..eggs. Go figure. As for hunger mine left with the surgery, so I can't relate to being hungry and not able to eat. I really hope it doesn't return either. But that's wishful thinking. Protein is supposed to take the edge off your hunger so hoping you find something you can eat and tolerate to help you with that. Good luck! -
10 weeks out from surgery- struggling to find what works
Arabesque replied to MelbaT's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I found looking at the first couple of months like I was a baby being slowly introduced to foods & learning how to eat helped to understand what I as experiencing. I also used to say my tummy was like a tantrum throwing, petulant two year old. Liking a food one day & not the next. But a week later that food was fine again. Added to that the changed taste buds & maybe being more sensitive to certain odours can make meal times challenging. But yes, it does get better & easier. These things are temporary. Of course how temporary is different person to person. And there may be the odd food you will continue to struggle with or don’t sit well. I still don’t do bread, rice & pasta as it sits too heavily in my tummy. it’s just a quirk of your tummy. Keep a variety of foods on hand. I froze lots of cooked meats & leftover meals in single portions so I always had options. Chicken tender strips, soft fish fillets, sausages (from a butcher not mass produced), & smoked salmon were my go to lunches. The smoked salmon was the weirdest as before surgery I often found it too rich to eat. After surgery I could eat it but then two months later nope it was too rich again. I never had issues with eggs or chicken but many do. But I could not do tinned fish at all. PS I agree. Shakes are disgusting 🤮. I never had another one once I started purées & gave away the protein powder I bought - also blah! I found a good high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drink to give me a boost of protein each day instead. -
Help! 2 1/2 months Post Op and Not Eating

You can’t not eat. There’s some great advice from the others about reintroducing food into your day. Demand your surgeon give you guidelines & also request a referral to a dietician/nutritionalist who is knowledgeable of the needs of post surgery patients. Ask for portion recommendations, protein & fluid goals, and goals/limits of other macros. Also ask for a referral to a therapist. Many find therapy very helpful as they work through their fears & relationship with food. Can’t believe your surgeon said to eat whatever you want. I mean that’s how you became overweight in the first place. Yes, vomiting (I call it regurgitating cause it’s not like vomiting of old) is most possible in the beginning while you are healing but because you haven’t been eating your tummy may struggle for a while until it gets used to food again. You may have odd occurrences if something doesn’t sit well or if you have the foamies (eating food that may be too dry or too coarse or eating too quickly) too. I gave up shakes as soon as I began purées & got my protein from real food too. It was my goal & my surgeon & dietician were happy. I found a good high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drink to give me a boost of protein each day to supplement the solid/real foods I was eating. I was also advised to eat about 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food from purées slowly increasing to a cup. I got to the cup at 6 months. Now I eat about a recommended serve or a little less & am maintaining my weight. If you follow your plan & dietician recommendations you won’t gain weight. It’s literally impossible in the lower calorie intake we have until our weight stabilises unless you exceed those guidelines & recommendations. All the best. PS. Try to avoid fruit juices as they have a high natural sugar content (that’s why it may say no added sugar but may have sugar identified on the nutrient panel). It takes several oranges to make a glass of orange juice but you would only eat one whole orange at a time. When you are able, it’s always better to eat the whole fruit & get the additional nutrients like fibre & fewer carbs. -
Food Before and After Photos

I still can’t get over the pineapple on that pizza. I thought that was sacrilege or is that only in the States? Back in the ‘before times’ I found the pineapple cut through the fatty oily cheese. (Mind you that was the 70s/80s when ham & pineapple was one of the couple of pizza options we had.) -
Post Op Week 4 Anxiety (long but a great read!! Lol)
Arabesque replied to sleevedbaddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Water can almost feel too heavy to drink at times though adding a little juice (a teaspoon or squeeze of a citrus) like @sleeversk suggested can help. I used to dilute a lot of things (shakes, hydralyte, soup, etc) to get them to a consistency, texture & flavour I could tolerate. I drank green tea (which is my regular drink), plain water & used to let sparkling water go flat (opened the bottle but didn’t drink it for a day). I found a great high protein yoghurt drink too (you can make your own by blending your yoghurt with milk). -
Hi everyone! I am having VSG on the 27th. 4 weeks after my husband and I will be going on a cruise for a week. My doctor stated I can go so long as I stick to my diet. I plan on bringing Isopure and Protein powder with me and stick to healthy foods at the buffet so I can serve myself but wanted to see if anyone one has done this or can give some tips.
-
Oh yeah they are very thoughtful of my situation, and the protein my people said I am only to have 60 grams of protein on this liquid diet, so I only drink 2 protein shakes and 22 ounces of the chicken broth and plenty Popsicles, jello, pudding. That's my countdown to the sleeve
-
Carla, I was going to ask are they eating around you. How rudeeeee lol. Make sure you're getting enough out the protein shakes. 60-90 grams is what my doc said. That three or 4. You freaking got this. If need be.. leave the room. Or asks them too. My partner ate in the bedroom last night. You got this!!!!

HELP!!! Revision - Sleeve to MGB
catwoman7 replied to cocoduan's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
milk and yogurt both contain lactose, which is a sugar - but it's not ADDED sugar (unless you're eating sugar-sweetened yogurt). I never worry about lactose. It's not a "bad" sugar, and the amount of protein in milk and yogurt offsets any negative. yellow stools (or any weird color, for that matter) aren't usual the first month or two after surgery. The digestive system has changed and it takes a couple of months for everything to settle down. I think mine looked normal again after 4-6 weeks (it's been a few years so I don't remember exactly) weight loss is usually slower with revisions. And if you're still on liquids or purees, no, you're not going to feel restriction. Those go through you pretty quickly (or in the case of fluids, they go right through you). Plus you've likely had nerves cut that'll take a few weeks to regenerate. You should start feeling restriction about the time you move to solid food. -
10 weeks out from surgery- struggling to find what works
MelbaT posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello all, I'm 10 weeks out from RNY and overall doing pretty good. My problem is I can't plan my food menu because one day I'll like a food, like eggs, and the next day it repulses me. Can't stand the smell of it. I'm like this with almost everything I'm eating. I can NOT do shakes ever again. I tried again about a month ago and gagged and threw it out along with the damn shaker bottle. Same with soups and broths. Can't even look at them. ONe day I'll do good with chicken and the next it sickens me. I'm often hungry, but eating makes me feel like crap. I enjoy nothing. I eat slow and don't eat until I am too full, so it's not like I'm overeating and getting sick from a food and then not wanting to eat it again. It makes me sad. Frustrating as hell. I'm hungry now, but nothing sounds good, looks good or tastes good. I often feel crappy after eating. Nauseated. Again, not eating until I'm too full, so it doesn't make sense to me. My dietician wants me to get in more protein but I can't figure out how. There is a part of me that wishes I never would've had the surgery because I'm so sick of feeling like crap. I have low/no energy. I'm taking all my vitamins and supplements. Anyone else have this problem? Will it get better over time? I have no idea what I'll take to work for lunch tomorrow. The chicken I made yesterday is grossing me out now. UGH!! Advice? I'm 34 pounds down now. I'm stalled but feel like it's because I'm not eating enough. I cannot do yogurt or much cheese as I have a hard time with milk products as well. Ack! One more thing I'll add is that I found I can't tolerate sugar free things either. I don't know if it's the xylitol, artificial sweeteners or what. Not eating sugary things either. -
Home made chicken broth Jello, pudding, powerade, Popsicles, protein shakes that's it I almost ate watermelon but I know that's a no no

Help! 2 1/2 months Post Op and Not Eating
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Ace35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hun, you have to eat. There are some great examples on here of different bariatric meal plans and guidelines that you could maybe pick from. If your surgeon literally said "eat whatever you want" then you might have to do some research on your own. Right now, your body is starving. So start off slow. Try drinking 3 protein shakes per day and maybe some protein water or protein gatorade or protein juice. Most important is getting in your protein and hydration. Try that for a week or 2, then go down to 2 shakes per day and add in a meal of maybe hummus and avocado spread, or refried beans, or cottage cheese. After 2 weeks, I was having a tbsp of hummus and a tbsp of avocado spread for a meal. After another week, go down to 1 shake and add scrambled egg, greek yogurt, and some soft (steamed) veggies like green beans, peas, carrots, or broccoli and cauliflower. By week 5, you can add in some chicken (it's a slider food, so don't over do it), black beans, cheeses, soft fruits (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, etc). Banana is you really want, but those can be higher in carbs, so go very easy on them. By week 6, you can eat normally, but you tastes will likely change, and things you liked and tolerated before may be different now. So go slowly when trying new foods. This was the plan I followed. I also got a food scale to measure out my portion sizes until I learned to eyeball it and tell just by looking roughly how much I could have of something. You can do this...just go slow, do some research, and ask all the questions you want. That's why we're here -
HELP!!! Revision - Sleeve to MGB
cocoduan posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all, Im 37 and injust got my MGB revision 20 days ago. I was sleeved 10 years ago and never reached my goal weight. After babies and hormonal BC i gained a lot back. I feel surprised now tho. I feel i havent loose much these days. I just started Phase 3 and where i live (Middle east) is very hard to find sugar free, fat free products and im wondering if is the greek yogurt (flavored) and the protein drink the ones that arent helping. Both say they dont have added sugar but have sugars at the end. Also i dont feel there is really a restriction in my stomach. Im still hungry, i can eat half cup of food, i can drink a whole glass of water with no issues... such a different experience than the sleeve. Im scared of failure. Im passing very light yellow stools i dont know why and is so painful. Sometimes i wonder if there was a surgery after all. Any ideas of why this weight loss is so slow? -

I wasn’t given protein goals and my surgeon literally said I am free to eat what I want, but I don’t want to gain weight. I did the shakes and my surgeon said to stop them. He wants me getting protein from food. -
Help! 2 1/2 months Post Op and Not Eating
Jonathan Carlson replied to Ace35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did your team give you protein goals? I would start with shakes and try to hit those. I had surgery in Feb of this year and vomited 3 times. It's unpleasant, but it can be avoided and I wouldn't fear it! -
Hungry and Failing, 11 days Post-op
summerseeker replied to elledubbs's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There is nothing wrong with eating every 2-3 hours, I did. My team suggested this so I could get some extra calories in. For example, I would make up some egg salad and tuna salad. I would alternate these with some cheese and a small piece of fruit and a protein yogurt. In between I would drink milk or coffee made with milk [ I was allowed coffee] Early on my diet was loaded with dairy. Not every ones cup of tea I know. Work with the regime you have been given, its worth it in the end This is easy prep for you with such a heavy work load. I would also get in some tinned soups bearing in mind tomato soup is very acidic on your new stomach and it may bounce about. I found some low cal popsicles to have at other times. At about 3 months when your stomach is healed your restriction will kick in and then you get the full feeling of this surgery. Nearly every one feels bad in the beginning. Remorse and regret are the usual symptoms we say in the forum at this time, I did. It is a big surgery and takes a lot of getting used to. Just white knuckle it -
Post Op Week 4 Anxiety (long but a great read!! Lol)
sleevedbaddie replied to sleevedbaddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all for your words!! It makes me feel better. I just want to make sure I’m following everything and meeting my goals as best I can. Drinking water at night a good idea I’ll try out. Getting my protein in is easy, I just struggle with drinking because it has started to make me sick. Probably from drinking plain water lol. The enhancers are too concentrated for me to enjoy them but I have figured it out -
Lizrios My surgery 5/15 and I am 71. Revision from Band to RNY I am doing good now! Still need a nap daily. Could be I am not walking enough and struggle getting protein in. Overall good though

I’m 11 days post- op and I’m constantly hungry. I have to eat every 2 hours or I go into scrounge mode. I eat anything I can lay hands on. Tonight, I let time get away from me and got hungry. I ate about 20 potato chips. I’m hitting and exceeding protein and fluid goals. I’ve started myself on rotisserie chicken 3 days early because I just can’t take it anymore. The only difference I’ve experienced since surgery on 5/30 is getting full faster but my hunger is probably worse. I get tired very quickly despite the protein and fluids. I’m so defeated right now. I feel like the pain and anxiety of the last few months has all been a waste.

Sweeteners after gastric sleeve
BabySpoons replied to Cheesekitty7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've read that some people's bodies can't differentiate between sugar and artificial but that has never been the case for me. I use Stevia or Torani SF syrups in cold coffees but in hot, just creamer. I couldn't have caffeine until 5 weeks out. I also use Stevia or Crystal light to flavor and sweeten my protein drinks in the blender. CL uses aspartame. I wish more SF products used Stevia instead. But it is what it is... SF products are OK according to my nutritionist's plan since day 2. If you don't have one to ask, I think you should be fine. Most everything we eat or drink in the beginning is trial and error anyway in how our bodies will react. -

High LIver Enzymes and Ferritin 8-7 months post op, help?
Laura M posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello All, I'm pretty scared, so bear with me on this. I am now 7 months post op RYGB and at my 3 month post op, my liver enzymes were mildly elevated but my ferritin was around 600, at 6 months now, my enzymes are AST 96, ALT 105, Ferritin 1022. I am with a doctor now and watching them every 2 weeks, I'm also getting a liver biopsy on Monday, and to say the least, what I read on the internet is scary as heck, about liver failure. I had a rough first 6 months with a lot of nausea and was not able to get as much protein as I wanted and I lost on the high end of the weight loss curve. I know I had fatty liver before the surgery for some time, but again, liver enzymes were upper end of normal. Can you all let me know if any of you have had this experience? I heard they can be elvevated for some time due to the rapid weight loss, but mine are not coming down as of yet. Thanks. Laura -
I slept for long hours in the days following surgery but it was a pleasant sleep - we have had major surgery and our body is directing us to rest. I'm sleeping and feeling a little more tired earlier but i think earlier nights is a good thing for me personally - I wake up feeling good. I had my surgery on 1st June. I'm doing ok. Managing to get around or about 1.5 litres of water and 4 small portions (3-4 tablespoon full) of mostly protein based pureed meals per day. I am now driving and was out for the longest I have been since surgery. Strolling around for a few hours and even trying on a few things! I have no pain. I am happy about the decision I made to have the surgery. I hope you are all well - good luck and congratulations to those of you who are having the surgery today xx

Anyone else sleeping a crazy amount?? I could literally sleep 12 hours straight. I’m going to have to start setting alarms for meds/water/ protein. Had surgery on Wednesday… still sore, almost all gas is gone.

Surgery Monday and I’m GROSSED OUT by protein powders !
LindsayT replied to Mari3997's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started using the bariatric pal protein shots. I couldn't stomach protein powder or the premixed creamy shakes. You can get a sample pack at the store to see if you like them before committing to a larger order. I have spent so much money on protein. Also, Fairlife milk has 13g protein per cup, which could be a good option as well. It's also lactose free and may be easier on your stomach.
