I had Bypass.... but.... For probably 7-8 years I have suffered from IBS with constipation. I was on a prescription to have BM's. Nothing over the counter worked. It was horrible. Before surgery I was so worried about it getting worse since constipation is such a common problem after WLS. Honestly, it was my biggest concern over everything else! So, POST OP: The first 2 days I had bad diarrhea. Not in large amounts because I wasn't eating, but it was all day long. Then I went from one extreme to the other complete constipation! UHG.. 6 days to be exact... my surgeon told me not to take my prescription without talking to him first so I finally called. He was on vacation so the office was waiting to get a response from him. In the meantime.. it came... SOOO hard.. SOOO painful. Took almost 2 hours on the toilet!! it hurt to sit down afterwards. Was ridiculous frankly! Then is was about another 3-4 days, a couple times of this less hard and painful each time. Then all a sudden I AM CURED! I am 3 months post op now and more regular than I have been my entire adult life!!! I have no problems going, almost every day sometimes every other. It is normal and easy and I take NO laxatives, supplements (for BM's) or prescriptions! Naturally regular and I must say it is wonderful. I never thought I would be so happy to poop! I know a lot of people drink miralax every single day to keep them regular. I really hope it works out for you and you find relief because I truly understand you suffering!

15+ Years with the band - Sleeve revision scheduled - What do I need to know?
Arabesque replied to WillyC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
A lot of sleevers have episodes of the foamies. It usually occurs if you eat too fast or too much or something that is too dry/coarse. Dumping is less common with sleeves than bypass. (Dumping occurs if you eat too much sugar or fat.) Both side effects can be managed simply by being careful about how & what you eat. I’m three years out & I had a bout two days ago. I ate too quickly because I wasn’t eating mindfully (I was having a ‘discussion’ with my mother 😉) & cough, spit & up came that last bite. I know you said your reflux developed as a complication with your band & once it was removed the gerd stopped, but I’m wondering if this may make you more likely to develop gerd post sleeve. I don’t know but it may be worth asking your surgeon if bypass might be a better option. 🤷🏻♀️ -
15+ Years with the band - Sleeve revision scheduled - What do I need to know?
liveaboard15 replied to WillyC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Foamies is more of a gastric bypass thing. I had sleeve 2 months ago. idk what restrictions you have on the band. but for us mainly small meal sizes... Protein is first and most important, waiting 30+ minutes after eating to drink anything. taking the multivitamins, calcium for life, and the possibility of developing severe GERD and needing a revision to bypass is a big thing and something i worry about. If you have GERD or heartburn then bypass will be what you need to get. -
Hi All - I'm sure this has been asked and answered - but here goes: I was banded in January of 2007 and had pretty good success with it. I lost 140lb - and maintained my weight at around 230-240lbs (I'm 6'2") for many years but after COVID lockdowns my weight started to creep back up to around 260lbs and I developed night coughs/reflux. I went to my surgeon a couple of months ago and he unfilled me which cured the reflux, but I immediately gained 10 lbs. He also did an endoscopy to make sure nothing was wrong. During the endoscopy he discovered I had a hiatal hernia and minor slippage with no erosion but he recommended that I consider removing the band and revision to a gastric sleeve (which I've agreed to do in order to be proactive and avoid any emergency complications if I do develop any erosion or other issues in the future). So my question is - what do I need to know about the differences between the two? I'd managed the band pretty well - occasionally dealing with PB's, sliming, and other fun - inconvenient but nothing I couldn't handle. I've read a couple of comments talking about foaming (or something)? Just want to make sure I'm going into this with my eyes wide open. Thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

Once per lifetime max on anthem bcbs
liveaboard15 replied to shiannajohnson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You know i tried something similar. So weight loss surgery is excluded for me. So i spoke to the insurance to see if i was diagnosed with severe gerd, would they cover gastric bypass surgery since its basically a cure to it. They straight up told me no. I was like of course thats just my insurance. -
I had the mini gastri bypass 7 Mo’s ago at 68.

my pouch (I'm a bypass patient) doesn't tolerate really acidic coffees, so I try to find some that aren't all that acidic. And some aren't. I usually get coffee at Aldi's (it's not labeled as "low acid", but still, it doesn't bother my stomach). Just experiment with a few brands/types and see what your stomach will tolerate.

Congrats on your wl, you are doing great. I’m 7 months post bariatric revision and have lost 79lbs to date. I’m officially stalling been 180-181 for almost 3 weeks now. This is longest stall I’ve had and starting to wonder if I’m done losing?? Got a couple more months to go to reach a year and my projected wl is 100lbs.. I hope this stall breaks this week!!! -
Once per lifetime max on anthem bcbs
liveaboard15 replied to shiannajohnson's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Probably not going to get around that. I have thought about that too since my state excludes all bariatric surgery. and i am hoping i never have heart burn issues but if i ever needed a revision to bypass my plan would be to move to another state temporarily, Set up residency, Get insurance, Get the procedure done and move back. Yea lots of work but $20K+ for revision is too high for most people to pay out of pocket. I paid $19K for my sleeve out of pocket andi am out of money lol -
Is there a Multivitamin and calcium citrate over the counter?
tdm7913 posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I today ran out of my vitamin starter pack from my Dr. I plan on ordering a package plan around the 5th of July (waiting for payday). I am not sure why or how I waited so long to get more. 🙄 So my problem is I need to get something that I can take for a week or two until my bariatric vitamins come in. Does anyone know how I might can find something? Thank You, Tracy (RNY gastric bypass 5/23/22) -
Sleeve - July 11th - anyone else?

I'm scheduled for July 11th but I'm having Gastric Bypass. I'm super excited! Sent from my REVVL V+ 5G using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi Bluemoon, no I don’t mind saying. It was $25K at Cleveland Clinic (CC), including all the pre- and post-op nutrition, psych, etc. appointments. I could have found a cheaper place, I know, but I had had a heart valve replaced at CC two years earlier, and just felt comfortable there. I had initially gone to CC looking to get a gastric balloon, but the surgeon said they didn’t do those any more there. He recommended a sleeve or bypass (I hadn’t realized that was an option, even as self-pay), and the rest is history. Worth it? Absolutely! Wish I’d done it years earlier!

I know it's early, only 3 weeks after my bypass. But it's just been one struggle after another. I was increasing my ability to eat and drink for a little while, but I seem to be going backwards now. I can barely force myself to consume maybe 25oz of liquid and 4 bites of food a day. But I can't stand any of the protein I've tried. I found one shake that's okay but I can only tolerate about half of it and not every day. If I have a shake or half a yogurt, I can't eat for the rest of the day at all. I feel sick all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, lightheaded, weak. I use a transdermal multivitamin patch approved by my surgeon. I'm having big regrets. I know it will probably get better later but I feel like it won't ever get better if I'm only consuming water and a couple bites of food (usually yogurt, well chewed soft meat, or sugar free ice cream). I have my 1 month follow up next week. Doc is already mad I'm haven't found a way to meet my protein goals. I'm trying so hard it but it's so uncomfortable to eat drink, even water. I haven't been vomiting so I don't think there's any real problems but I can't survive like this.

Got a surgery date! Sept 6th!
Bluemoon29 replied to loli_lotus's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@loli_lotus I’m very new to this. Just began researching. That’s a pretty quick turn around. My mom had gastric bypass, and she had to go through multiple appointments for 6 months before they’d even schedule that surgery. -
Stall out and depressed
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
They're giving you the average statistic. Statistically, gastric bypass patients can expect to lose 70% of their excess weight. But like with any other statistic, you're always going to find people on either side of that. There are people who only lose 30 lbs - and there are other people who lose 100% of their excess weight. If you want to lose more than 70% of your excess weight, it's certainly possible. It'll take work, but you'll find several examples on here of people who've done it. re: wearing the same clothes at 250 that you used to wear at 235, that's because you're building muscle. A pound is a pound is a pound, but a pound of muscle takes up a lot less space than a pound of fat. Muscle is very dense. So even though the scale reads 250, you probably appear exactly the same to the outside world as you did when you weighed 235. also - muscle holds a lot of water - that accounts for some of the weight as well. -
Stall out and depressed
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I appreciate it, thanks! Just to be clear, I've lost about 60 lbs in 4 months since my surgery. I lost 30 before my gastric bypass. I will definitely try to focus on the positives but as you know it can be such a frustrating experience when it's a huge goal in your life. Hopefully, this gets better! -
Need hiatal hernia repair and RNY revision
RickM replied to comtemplating's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You are right to be looking around for second and third opinions when contemplating a repair and possible revision with a higher than average complexity. If indeed you are in the "gained it all back, plus" camp, then the traditional RNY fixed probably won't be strong enough to do the job, and adding in the hernia and additional scaring compounds things. The surgeon I would suggest looking into would be Ara Keshishian, who is in the Glendale/Pasadena area of So Cal. He is one of the handful of surgeons who can do the complex RNY/DS conversion, should that me necessary, and I have seen some on these forums who have had some fairly involved RNY reworks from him (though his preference is usually to go for the DS if it makes sense.) Rumor has it that he isn't dealing with insurance anymore (haven't verified that, though,) so if that is an issue, another good choice to talk to would be John Rabkin in SF, who is similarly qualified in complex procedures., As both have long drawn patients from around the country (and beyond) they have long routinely been able to do their early screening discussions and longer term follow ups remotely. Another doc I would talk to if you want to look East would be Mitchell Roslin in NYC; he also seems to have a very deep toolkit, capable of doing a number of different procedures as appropriate Most bariatric surgeons are pretty good at doing RNYs and variations of that, but don't go very far beyond that, and it sounds like you need someone with rather broad (and deep) skills to get what you need. Good luck,,,, -
Hello everyone! Just got schedule for gastric bypass surgery on 8/24. Very excited to be moving forward!

Hi! I will be 68 in August. My gastric bypass was almost 3 weeks ago. This is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Already my bp meds have been cut in half, and I am walking 3 miles a day. I also had my gallbladder removed and a massive hiatal hernia was repaired

I know this is posted on here time and time again but I'm so frustrated. I'm getting ready for a cross country move. I really imagined that by this time I'd be in the 230s. I have stalled out for the last 3 or 4 weeks and am so frustrated about it. I keep going in between 248 and 251. I don't know if this is maintenance because im only a bit over 4 months post op from gastric bypass. I have definitely increased my calories but am eating in a deficit. My BMR is around 1900 and I'm eating in between 1000 and 1300 a day plus exercise. I have been slacking in water and have not been having protein shakes at all because I'm getting a decent amount through solid food and don't want the extra cals. How do I get past this? I'm going to stay off the scale until the end of next week but I'm still feeling really down and bad about myself. I feel like a disgusting fat mess honestly. I haven't had these feelings since pre op and I just need to vent about it. I was experiencing a period of mania a week ago for a good 2 weeks straight (I'm bipolar) and missed some of my meds. I think I might be crashing and going through a depressive state. It's not super bad but the weight loss stall is making me have a lot of negative self image and feelings of failure. Should I just get back on liquids for a week or something? I'm losing my mind and getting depressed as hell. I'm taking my meds regularly again. I really only missed like 3 or 4 days and I take a small dosage. So I'm hoping to even back out soon but the stall is messing with my brain and confidence. What do you do? Mexico? Or stay in states? Where did you go + how much did you pay?

Doesn’t look like Renew Bariatrics does the mini gastric bypass. If any of you had this procedure in Mexico, where did you go? -

How to win an insurance appeal?
Recidivist replied to Cabelltech's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance company initially denied coverage for my RnY. I had my surgeon contact the company directly to explain why I needed the surgery and that did the trick. (Mine was not a revision, which might make a difference.) -
Not sure if this helps but I had VSG in Feb 2020 and never had any problems with GERD prior to surgery. Since my surgery I have terrible GERD and am now getting ready to have a revision to a bypass. Also, I only lost 40 lbs after my VSG. Wish I had just had the bypass to start with!

Why why why did I do this? Slow suicide.
Arabesque replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Often people have to change some meds they’re on because your bypass may affect the absorption of the medication. Often these are slow release meds. BUT they don’t take you completely off the tablets. (Except may blood pressure meds.) I agree with the others in that being taken of your meds cold turkey is contributing a lot to what you are experiencing. It can be dangerous to cut anti depressant meds. And yes, definitely contact your prescribing doctor. You don’t have to rely solely on shakes. (I found them awful too.) Try bone broths, wonton soup or pho broths (just strain out the wontons, vegetables, noodles, etc.) soups, yoghurt smoothies (thin yoghurt with milk). Many UK surgeons recommend drinking milk you enrich by adding milk powder. At three weeks we’ve often moved to purées. But of course all plans are different. I gave up shakes I suffered through at the beginning of week three. When do you start purées? Please take care of yourself.
