Best OTC Acid Blocker
RickM replied to Timberlynn Sleeved to DS's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The VSG is somewhat predisposed to reflux, meaning that a greater proportion of those with that surgery will have that problem than the general population. The sleeve reduces the volume of the stomach much more than its' acid producing potential, and sometimes the body doesn't fully adjust to that. The bypass in comparison is predisposed to dumping syndrome, reactive hypoglycemia, marginal ulcers and mineral deficiency disease, so there are trade offs with whatever route one chooses (and with doing nothing, given all of the obesity related diseases that we are trying to avoid!) This is not unusual when we change things in our body - surgery of any kind changes things and sometimes there are negative aspects, or risks of, along with the positives. Medications change our body chemistry to solve a problem, but sometimes there are side effects that are negatives. It is routine for patients to be given a PPI for a while after any WLS, or even on GI procedures - I was put on pantoprozole for a month after a minor cardiac procedure I had a few months ago simply because when the body is under stress (like form surgery) it tends to over produce acid. So, being on a PPI at this point is normal, and nothing to worry about. -
Gastric sleeve in September... question [emoji780][emoji780]
catwoman7 replied to Trixxx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree - I'm surprised your surgeon didn't bring this up with you. Normally gastric bypass is recommended for people with reflux. as for your other questions, 1 . Does GS affect your breathing in any way ? Haven't heard of this issue 2. is there any vomitation of blood in the mouth after surgery haven't heard of this - but it seems plausible since it's stomach surgery, so I suppose it could happen 3. Can I smoke my vape with nicotine after GS we were told no smoking/nicotine 4. Is it hard to swallow (water/protein drinks) in the days after GS for some, yes - but for most, no. 5. What happens if I miss my Vitamin tablets for a couple of days , will I feel weak ? a couple of days shouldn't be an issue, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. We have a few sleevers on here who were given the go-ahead to stop taking certain or all vitamins based on their lab results - but it'll be awhile before that kind of decision (might be...) made. In the mean time, you should be taking them regularly. 6. I suffer from Heartburn (gastric reflux)will my heartburn tablets be ok to take after the surgery yes, you can take heartburn meds, but again, I'm a little surprised you'll be getting sleeve surgery since you suffer from heartburn. Sleeve can make that worse. It's not inevitable - and it doesn't even happen to the majority - but the risk is big enough that many surgeons will recommend bypass instead of sleeve for heartburn sufferers. -

If you already suffer from reflux then the Gastric Sleeve is not the operation for you, You need a Gastric bypass. A sleeve will only make your reflux worse -
Emotional hurdles / Marriage issues
CarmenP posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, It’s been a long time since I’ve posted. I had my surgery in 2014, lost over 120 pounds, gained back roughly 15. So far, so good. But I am having difficulties now that I never expected and I don’t know where else to turn. In the last 4 years or so, I have fallen completely out of love with my husband. There is NO physical desire whatsoever, and I am bored and nearly emotionally indifferent - I say “nearly” because of course I care about him, want the best for him always, wish him no ill will in any way, etc… But I feel as if my surgery/weight loss created not just a new body but a new PERSON. Has ANYONE else experienced or even HEARD of such a thing happening to gastric bypass patients? I feel lost. Trapped. Scared. I have been fighting how I feel for years, hoping it would improve. Any insight is greatly, GREATLY appreciated. Thank you. 💔 -
Yeah, I wasn’t happy with my results from the sleeve either so I’m glad I’m having the revision. I really had to get my head on straight about food before my surgery so it’s great that you’re preparing ahead of time. I was up and about immediately after my sleeve surgery so I’m hoping I will do the same after my bypass. I had to remember to take it easy because I felt fine afterwards. I only had a short period of pain and nausea while I was in the hospital and I got over it pretty quickly. I only spent one night in the hospital. I hope you do very well after your surgery! You definitely must keep us all posted!

Mexico? Or stay in states? Where did you go + how much did you pay?
Amanda Purser replied to Christina1985's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went to Tijuana mexico. My surgery was on June 20th. I used MBC and they were all very nice and professional. The hospital was clean and they take very good care of you. I had bypass and I can give you a break down on what I paid. $5895 for the RNY, $390 for the companion, $395 for the hernia, and $395 for BMI 49+ = $7,075 Sent from my BE2028 using BariatricPal mobile app -

15+ Years with the band - Sleeve revision scheduled - What do I need to know?
Daddyof4 replied to WillyC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Willy, congrats on your decision to do a revision. On March 21 I had my band removed, my hiatal hernia repaired and revision to bypass. I had been having bad reflux too and had my band unfilled and promptly packed on 40 lb. I went with bypass because my surgeon said that reflux is common with the sleeve but less common with bypass. I’m down 58 lb since starting the liquid diet March 7 and feel great, no reflux at all. Not trying to talk you into anything but you might want to think about why you’re choosing sleeve instead of bypass. I wish you great success either way. -
Wishing you all the best Msbosse I'm due for a bypass and hiatal hernia repair as well on the 20th of July. Do keep in touch with the progress I will follow you.

I was sleeved in 2019 and now converting to bypass and hernia repair 7/14

Hi, my gastric bypass surgery was March 14, 2022, and I’m still having issues keeping things down, meds, food, clear liquids, even my own spit. Anyone else going through this? Any pointers? I started at 232 lbs and I’m already down to 160 lbs.

thank you!! my husband had bypass scheduled for the same day as me, but insurance denied him a few days ago. There was much confusion from both the surgeon's office and the insurance company. We think some information wasn't submitted correctly from the surgeon's office. Our insurance sent us a letter stating that the dr's office needed to state that my husband did not have a substance abuse disorder nor had he been in treatment for the past year. Then our dr's office called and said that my husband's last alcoholic drink was in January and that was too recent. At that point, his surgery was cancelled. Just to clarify: my husband used to have a nightcap before bedtime - that's as close as he has ever been to a "substance." It's almost laughable - except his surgery was denied. We are both going to my pre-op appointment on Tuesday for more answers. Hopefully it will be a quick fix. We are disappointed but hoping that he will get his approval soon.

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op
kcuster83 replied to Veritas34's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
*** I had Bypass, so it may be different*** At 1 month post op, my plan was to eat 400-600 calories a day. Then the next phase it increased to 500-800 calories. Once I was eating "normal" foods again I stay at 800-1000 until I hit maintenance. I am just over 3 months post op and on normal foods and a normal balanced diet and eat about 600-800 calories a day. I was worried I was not eating enough but my Dietician reviewed my food diaries and said I am doing perfect, not to worry about not hitting the calories as long as I am meeting my protein and fluids goals. From what you listed I do not think it is too much food as long as you are comfortable and not over eating or feeling stuffed. They are all low fat healthy proteins! Good job! -

I was originally considering the sleeve, but my surgeon was concerned about the reflux so we opted for the bypass. I'm so sorry to hear you have to go in for a revision, but I sure hope it brings you some relief. I have a standard two week liquid pre-op diet, nothing special. But I'm modifying my Keto Chow protein to use almond milk instead of heavy cream during that time. Last night I made fluff for the very first time using the SF jello and greek yogurt - it was very good. So experimenting with recipes to see what I like/don't like cause I know I might too tired or need a family member to help -
Congratulations! I’m 3 weeks out from bypass and I feel like a new person! You will not regret doing this. It is the best thing I have ever done for me! I’ve lost 30 lbs, and I feel amazing! I had NO pain post op. No gas, no pain, I never needed pain meds, and I am not hungry. I could not be happier! You are almost there! Yay, you!!! I also had 2 months of pre-op testing for insurance and 2 weeks while they review everything. My insurance picked up 97% of the bill which was $70,000. It was ALL worth it!

Definitely a good choice having the bypass especially if you already have issues with acid reflux. I’m getting ready to have a revision from sleeve to gastric bypass because of the terrible reflux I have.
-
I feel the same way about my fur baby. Wow! American Eskimos! Beautiful babies! What all is your surgeon having you do to prepare for your surgery? I’m actually having a gastric bypass as a revision to my gastric sleeve. I’ve had terrible acid reflux after my sleeve so the bypass should help with the GERD. Plus, I’m hoping to lose 30 more lbs since I only lost 40 lbs after my sleeve. I really should have had the bypass to begin with! Even though my BMI is 30, I still have to do the two weeks of liver shrinking diet prior to my surgery.

The threat of dumping and the reduction in reflux were the two main reasons why I've chosen the bypass.

Hey Y’all! My Gastric bypass was on may 2nd 2022. I’m down 38 pounds but I’ve stalled! Sitting at around 276-278 (it fluctuates) I’ve been eating salads, nothing fancy but I measure everything out which ends up being around 240 calories with my dressing. And I’ve been obsessed with the no sugar added out shine popsicles. I’m wondering if my calories are too high? I usually am around 800-1000 and I walk and go to the gym so I’m thinking this is my maintenance calories and I’m not enough in a deficit? I’ve decided to switch it up and this week go back to basics of just 2 oz of protein and my serving of veggies. And I’ve cut back popsicles to 1 a day. I actually bought some popsicle holders and plan on taking my crystal light water and freezing it into popsicles to help get my water in also. Just wondering everyone else’s experience with stalling and how you got through it? I’m proud of what I have lost but can’t help feeling like I’m failing at this.l sometimes.

How to win an insurance appeal?
Cabelltech replied to Cabelltech's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Unfortunately, I think having a revision does seem to make a difference even though I had weight loss success with the band. I always vomited with the band but I was twelve years out before the vomiting was happening during the night while I was sleeping. That is very scary and the main reason I chose to have it removed. -
Taking ibuprofen right after I check out from the hospital
liveaboard15 replied to Supafly82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
funny thing is after my surgery while in the hospital i was given celebrex a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory up until my discharge. After discharge i was prescribed Hydrocodone for pain tho it was not needed since the main pain was from the air in your chest which pain medication does nothing. my surgeon said that NSAIDS were not to be taken for gastric bypass people. and for sleeve people on a very limited amounts. -
I am having bypass on July 18. Starting liquid pre-op diet on 11th. Very excited!! Good luck to everyone!

I can certainly understand that, as they tend to be familiar with different dodges used to get around their exclusions. There are a number of procedures that are used to treat GERD, depending upon what the cause is. Fixing a hiatal hernia, for instance, doesn't require a bypass to accomplish, though such repairs are commonly performed in conjunction with WLS, either a sleeve or pouch type. When I had my VSG, it was just starting to be routinely approved by US insurance companies -some did, others still called it "investigational", As a legacy of that, insurance commonly excluded the 2 step DS (as the DS uses that sleeve as its basis, in extreme cases they would do a VSG first, and then once the patient had lost enough weight to undergo the longer switch part they would do that as a second procedure - that was the origins of the VSG, as some found that they lost enough on just the VSG that they didn't need to go through with the second part. Insurance got wise to the dodge of getting approval for the DS but only doing the first VSG part, so they blocked that approach. Of course, for those who really needed to go that route, it was still available but they needed to jump through more hoops to get there. Had your surgeon approached them, it might have flown (assuming that it was a justifiable approach for your GERD, as they would not be asking for an RNY WLS, but using different terms and codes. The same basic procedure (it's called a Billroth II) is used for treating several different maladies, and the rules and codes are different for each. The sizes of limbs and the pouch are different for an RNYGB WLS than they would be for a partial gastrectomy used in treating gastric cancer or gastroparesis, though they are the same basic procedures.
