I personally never had it past week 4, and what little I had was barely there. Most people notice it after they start solids. I didn't. I had my revision to bypass on the 28th and I'm on week 3 foods and feel no restriction. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

Hi Everyone! I was sleeved on 6/26...and had an unexpected hiatal hernia repair done at the same time. Gotta love a 2-for-1! Down almost 30lbs since my high on 6/1...have been surprised by the level of hunger though post-op and may have suggested to my surgeon that he didn't take enough stomach out 🙃. Started purees last Thursday...loving cottage cheese...thankfully no issues with hydration. Heading back to work tomorrow, which has me a bit nervous especially since i am so focused on my food intake still. Wishing everyone well!!

Food Aversions After Surgery
MasonMoonGirl replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh yeah Isopure is a good brand i forgot about! I used it when I did Keto. Did your surgery team give you all this good advice or you learned on your own? I'm learning more from you guys and my book than them lol. So Mashed Potatoes is allowed in the pureed stage?? That will be a lifesaver. Glad to hear the shake worked out! -
I still can't and I'm 20 months post op tomorrow Matt! I can drink drink drink before a meal now - pretty close to eating actually (and it sounds like you can't yet). Think it took me at least a year from memory to get that far. I simply cannot do it the other way around - gives me real grief. Once I eat solid food I have to wait at least half an hour and ideally more like an hour until I drink. The only exception to this is when I want to, LOL, and even then it needs to be planned like a military operation. I can swallow a mouthful of pizza followed by a mouthful of beer for like forever. I only do this when in company and not wanting to draw attention to my surgery. I wouldn't recommend it other than in an emergency - it's a surefire way to regain.

Food Aversions After Surgery
CarmenG replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I bought the Isopure Whey Isolate Protein. Whey protein is more readily absorbed. I would also add it to a 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes after they cooled down a bit, so that it wouldn't be a completely valueless pureed food. 😁👍(For the 1/2 cup mash, just a half scoop which is 12.5g protein.) P.S. the caffeine protein shake worked out great! -
I’m about 10 weeks post surgery. At what point can you drink liquids with food? With the summer being here, after I come back for a walk, I’d like to drink some water and heat up dinner. Pretty frustrating I have to wait 30-45 minutes before I can eat and it’s already a long work day.

Food Aversions After Surgery

I bought all of most of those things as well. I also added a flavorless protein powder to add to the chicken/beef broth. You can also add it to pudding, oatmeal, or other soft foods. The one thing I did learn was to slowly incorporate the protein with a whisk and the broth can't be too hot. Otherwise, the protein powder becomes denatured. It gets clumpy and weird. But when I whisked it in slowly, the broth became almost creamy. I really love (still) the Premier Protein shakes. My favorite flavors are caramel and the cafe latte. The coffee one, though, actually has caffeine in it. It has the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee. I'm going to try one again today. I'm hoping that since it's a protein shake and not an actual hot cup of coffee, I'll be ok. -
Good morning everyone 🌞 My QOTD today is did anyone develop any food aversions after surgery? Any foods you used to like that now you can't stand? Seafood is already off limits for me so I'm hoping chicken or beef don't become one for me!
-
I know this sounds weird, but enjoy it while it lasts - because it doesn't last for the vast majority of us. Sometime during the first year after surgery your hunger will come back, and it makes things a lot harder. I wish I was one of the lucky few whose hunger never came back. It was so easy to lose weight when I was never hungry and didn't give a flip about food!

Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO
Fred in Pa replied to cocoduan's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At 8 weeks I was at about 800 calories per day. I went mostly on my restriction and making sure to make good food choices. That equated to about 5 to 7 ounces per meal depending on the texture. Most of my calories came from protein. My team didn’t give a calorie goal but instead advised what I outlined above. I am now at four months, and have added in more exercise, and therefore more calories. I have slowly added in carbs while watching my blood sugar levels as well to balance my diet. Looking towards maintenance, I was told to balance calories and activity to maintain weight…all while making good food choices. -
Solid foods will definitely make you feel the restriction. Also, as you heal and scar tissue forms, you'll feel more restriction as well.

Favorite Foods/Shakes/Recipes
BigSue replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There's a reason Shelly's Baked Ricotta is the most popular soft food recipe in the WLS community. It's basically lasagna minus the pasta and it is amazing after weeks of protein shakes and sugar-free jello. Pro tip: divide the recipe into 8 ramekins or small glass dishes before baking. https://www.food.com/recipe/shellys-baked-ricotta-324036 -
I think I’ve read about the slider foods like crackers being an issue for people because they go down so easily and they can eat quite a few of them.

Yes this is a thing, I found it so wasteful. It seemed like all my very favourite foods before surgery were no go foods to me. Humous and salmon are still yuck foods to me. I have just started to eat eggs, avocado and pork. Feeling never hungry is also a thing, we all give ourselves a set time to eat each meal. My meals were tiny so I had 5 or 6 a day and a glass of milk. You will get very weak if you don't get enough nutrition, forcing ourselves to eat is a strange thing that I never had before It does get better, just give it time

most of us don't start feeling the restriction until we move to solid foods.

Depressed before surgery
Midwest Grateful replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@MasonMoonGirl... Congratulations on saying no and resisting the temptation to give in to food invitations! I respectfully disagree with the suggestion to go to Com Con. Not at this stage. I am on my pre-op liquid diet (day 5 of 14). It's doable. Day 3 was my hardest, especially emotionally. I have been seeing a therapist to help prepare me for a drastic lifestyle change (I'm also a counselor, so that was an easy choice). Good for you for making that choice as well. The liquid diet isn't half as challenging as the mindset re food choices, etc. Hang tough. You're wise to begin this serious lifestyle change now. From all I've read - and I've researched this for eons, as well as know several people who have had WLS - the ones who get therapy or at least find a way to change their lifestyle and their mindset surrounding food are the ones who stay consistent and are less likely to return to old destructive thinking and gain weight later. Keep those boundaries clear for you and others to see. Anyone who doesn't respect your boundaries and journey, put much space between you and them. This is too important. All the best! 💟 -
Favorite Foods/Shakes/Recipes

Ricotta bake sounds so good, I'll check that out thanks! Good thing I love cheese and eggs! I feel like during the pureed stage cottage cheese and yogurt are going to be my only friends 🤣🤣 -
Good Morning Everyone! QOTD is what is your favorite recipe/foods/shakes for your pre or postoperative surgery? I am still able to eat many foods except for carbs still so I haven't delved into Bariatric recipes yet, but I will share mine once I do! For now I've been trying a lot of different protein shakes from Premier Protein including chocolate vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, cake batter, strawberries and cream and caramel. I love all of them, except for strawberries and cream is not my favorite, but they have been great for when I'm craving dessert! I have one for breakfast in the morning and I mix it with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen to keep my skin looking great during this process! I feel like that and my Solgar Biotin and Hair Skin and Nails has already been helping. I am big on skin care amd a Sephora "junkie" and can give anyone advice on that!

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op
CarmenG replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For me it was supposed to be 12 days on full liquids and then 2 days clear liquids right before surgery. My doc told me that if they opened me up and found any food in my stomach and/or gut, he'd cancel it and sew me back up! So, I wasn't taking any chances. He also wanted me to lose some weight prior to my surgery, so that also motivated me to start detoxing and dieting 4 weeks before I had to. I wasn't counting calories or anything on my semi-liquid diet, but I wasn't snacking either. I would control myself until dinnertime, lol. But I found that once you detox from carbs, it gets really easy to not crave them so much at all. -
Things that have been helping me Pre-Op
MasonMoonGirl replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am slowly preparing with dieting as well. I'm eating all the right foods, but probably not limited my intake as much as I should. I completely cut out alcohol too and don't plan on drinking again. I never liked soda or carbonated drinks so that part will be easy for me, but I love water haha and right now I drink a lot of water. I was worried that it would be hard for me not to drink water because some medications I'm on give me dry mouth and make me really thirsty. How far in advance did they tell you to do all liquids before surgery? Mine is two days but I thought maybe i should try to do it for a week to shrink my liver more too. I asked the office and they told me no I don't need to do that but I want the best recovery possible... -

Hello, new member and was curious about a few things.
Zai2022 replied to Penguin733's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m 13 months out from sleeve. The first six weeks are the toughest part, learning to drink often, learning or relearning how to eat and what you can tolerate. You will lose then stop losing and think you’re doing it wrong. You’ll feel regret and frustration and pain and exhaustion. The diet progression sucks. It’s just tough. So, be kind to yourself, try to hit your water and protein goals and move as often as you comfortably can. Even if it’s a sad little shuffle around the room. Everyday it will get better and around six weeks the steady weight loss begins. Understand the changes in your hormones will make you feel emotional and anxious. But the good stuff is right around the corner. You made it this far, just keep moving forward and pay strict attention to measuring your food until you can feel your restriction. The signals from your new tummy won’t be noticeable right away and it’s very important you don’t eat too much or the wrong kind of stuff. Later, you’ll be able to enjoy all kinds of stuff but now is the time to pay attention to the guidelines. And as soon as you’re cleared, start an exercise routine even if it’s just walking at first. It makes a huge difference in how you feel and how quickly you lose. Good luck! -
i know everyone’s experience may be different but my surgeon said to start the diet they have (liquid- purée-soft foods) for a reason to make sure your stomach can get used to working and digesting food progressively. you still drink protein shakes while doing this

Thanks for the compliment. We're on vacation too (nothing as fancy as Europe). It was our year to visit family. And y'all know how that goes... dinner our, picnics, BBQs, road trip food. 😫 My husband and I shared most of our out to eat meals, but we went to all our favorite restaurants from home, so it was hard to just ordet something that was bariatric friendly. It's been hard keeping track of food, water, and weight. I've lost, maybe 2 lbs, but have definitely maintained while we've been gone. We get home tomorrow and am looking forward to getting back to my normal routine. Sounds like you enjoyed your trip. We've only ever been to England and even then that was when my husband was stationed there in the military. I would love to go back some day.
