  1. I am going in for a revision in 2 weeks and hoping some of you may be able to tell me about your experience. VSG in Dec 2016, lost 70lbs and then got pregnant. Did not gain any back until COVID. I’m now 30lbs away from where I was at my initial surgery date. Has anyone completed this revision? What has your weight loss experience been? Is it a lot slower? I’ve heard many people have increase bowel movements? Have you found less restriction to make it more difficult to lose? To complicate everything my gastroscopy just revealed a significant hiatal hernia which will also likely be repaired at the same time. I’m glad they found it because I’ve had a lot of unexplained chest and back pain since my last pregnancy. I’m a bit nervous about the recovery though. Any info you can provide would be great! Thanks!
  2. Yes crossing all fingers. I had a very good dr.when he did my sleeve just wish I would have gotten the bypass in first place...but oh well that life. He willing to do it again... Sent from my SM-G991U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. 4. Hey Y’all! I am so worried about my husband! He had Rue & Y Gastric Bypass April 6th 2021 so he’s 1 year and 3 months post op and it’s been a NIGHTMARE!!! He has literally lost 200 pounds. He has always been a 220 pound man. He was diagnosed with COPD in 2017 and he was given massive amounts of steroids for all his lung trouble, which caused him to gain weight. At his heaviest he weighed 394lbs. He now weighs about 190lbs. We are both extremely proud of his Weightloss but y’all he literally CANNOT EAT ANYTHING! He THROWS EVERYTHING UP, even liquids. He constantly has abdominal pain. His Surgeon, his GI Doctor, and his GP family doctor are all stumped and none can figure out why. We found out the day of his Gastric Bypass that his stomach had twisted and flopped upwards and they thought that this was the reason for the abdominal pain and vomiting he was having before the surgery, but he’s still having severe pain and problems. Technically he didn’t have the surgery for Weightloss, he had the surgery because he was told by 2 different bariatric doctors that this was the answer to fixing his pain and nausea but they didn’t even know what the problem was and they still don’t. His Surgeon now believes that he could have a nerve problem or nerve damage and believes that is what is causing his pain and nausea. Have any of you had nerve damage that has caused you abdominal Pain, Nausea, and vomiting after your surgeries? If so, What was done for you and has it helped? Also, have any of you tried otc nausea patches from this website or any other and if so, do they work? He takes prescription nausea medicine but they do not work! I am very scared and very worried for him. He is 47 years old, his lung issues are under control but I fear for him nutritionally. He takes his supplements and he is getting IV FLUIDS (Banana Bag) every Friday but all this is really taking a toll on him physically and mentally. He is having another EGD scope to look in his stomach at the end of this month but they have done all this already and they never find anything. He does everything he’s supposed to do from having this surgery but he’s not getting any relief or any answers..

    Trouble eating food after bypass

Hey surgery twin, I had my bypass on May 18th too! I struggle with sharp pain like my esophagus is clogged, right after eating food that's too dry or chewy. I find I am mostly still in the soft food stage. A huge portion of my diet is greek yogurt and cottage cheese, which I have to eat incredibly slowly. Literally one spoonful at a time and then a long pause in between bites to make sure my stomach is not going to cause any drama for me. I think with many bypass patients, it can be a long healing process to get to the point where we can eat most foods comfortably.

    Any July buddies?

Oh makes sense! I have major acid reflux issues now.. I know bypass is a little more invasive but really.. if their in there they might as well do it all. I really don’t want to go through 2 surgeries myself.. 🙄 You’re making the right choice. I’m going to ask the Dr this week then. Thanks for replying 😊

    Any July buddies?

Hi Stacy. I really wanted the sleeve! but so many people are having the revison to the bypass after the sleeve. It's because they are having issues with acid reflux. When I had my EDG I had bile in my stomach (acid reflux) I never thought I had it but I did! SO to keep all the problems at a minimum, she advised me that I could still do whichever one but recommended the gastric bypass.

    Metabolic syndrome

I had high cholesterol as a young person, walking 2 miles a day, weighing only 150 lbs, and eating very healthy. I have since almost doubled my weight, and will have gastric bypass surgery on july 18th. My doctor said that i may always have high cholesterol (and be on meds for it) even after i lose weight. But i'm hopeful to come off my blood pressure meds.

    Any July buddies?

I’m in for the sleeve but may I ask why you switched to the bypass? I’m seriously considering switching myself.

    Any July buddies?

Hi Bariatric fam...my date changed to 7/27! They had me down for the sleeve but I switched to the full bypass! Where are my sister/brother buddies!!
  12. I had bypass with hernia repair and esophagus repair and "trimming". I had 1 incision that was larger and more painful than the rest but not to the point of taking my breath away. It just took longer to heal and hurt a little more than the rest of them.
  13. I’m on day three from having a revision surgery to take out my lapband, fix a hiatal hernia, and have a gastric bypass. I’m doing decently except for when I try to stand up from my bed or my sofa, the big incision on the right middle of my torso hurts like crazy. Burns, stings, sharp pain — more than just “sore” like the other incisions. It takes my breath away. I’m guessing this big incision is where my surgeon took out the port from the lapband and did most of the work, since it’s the biggest and most painful one by far. I don’t remember having one incision be this painful after my two other laparoscopic surgeries (appendectomy and lap band). Anyone else have something like this post surgery where one incision is far, far more painful than the others? If so, how long until the intense pain went away for you?

    Lost about revision

So I originally had the sleeve in 2018 with a doctor by the name of Dr Steiner in a town about an hour from home. I did well for about 3 years, went from 305lb to 212lb. Not that Im making excuses, but I work in healthcare and COVID took a huge toll on me and my health. I was working long hours and without breaks so I began snacking on anything and everything whenever I could. Of course Ive gained quite a but of weight back as I am now back at 250lb. A new bariatric office opened about 30 minutes from me and I decided to go see them to see what I needed to do about the weight regain, along with the severe GERD that I have developed. The doctor was nice but he just couldn't get anything approved with my insurance. He also did an EGD on me which showed that I had H pylori and he never treated me for it. After that I decided to go back to my original surgeon an hour away from home because they were always so nice and helpful. So Im back with the original doctor now that did my sleeve. He says I definitely need a conversion from sleeve to bypass to help with the GERD and weight regain. It was a no brainer to them. So my advice would be, dont be afraid of getting a second opinion. BUT 9/10 times the original surgeon will know more and do more for you than a new one.

While technically going to different doctors looking for a different answer is doctor shopping, I think this is really only a bad thing if you are trying to get meds and stuff that you really don’t need. There is nothing wrong with getting a second or even a third opinion. I agree that knowing WHY they are saying they don’t want to do revision. Could be as simple as that your insurance doesn’t cover it or as complex as a medical issue that makes it dangerous. But if it’s the former you always should be given the option to finance and if it’s the latter than another doctor with a different approach may be able to help you. I would call and ask them why. Tell them you are seeking other answers and need to know why they feel you are not a candidate. Also, I just got an email yesterday about the use of diabetes medications now being accepted for weight loss Something like GLB-1?? They are difficult to get covered by insurance and not cheap but being covered by more and more every day Dr. Weiner, a weight loss surgeon says. Perhaps worth looking into.
  16. I’m assuming you were already taking bariatric formulations of your vitamins and those didn’t work. Yea the injections seems like a logical solution since they bypass the stomach alltogether. Hopefully your primary doctor can arrange for those.

Why were you told no to a revision? Are there health concerns, or does that surgeon just not do them? I wouldn't worry about stepping on toes. This is your body and health. Talk to as many doctors as you need to until you find one that understands your needs and concerns and makes you feel comfortable. Also, I started with my PCP. She signed off right away for me to do the surgery. I contacted a few surgeons until I found one I liked. My PCP was very good at getting all the blood work, ECG, and pre op stats like blood sugar, bp, etc... She communicated really well with the surgeon's office and it made things go so much smoother.
  19. Hey there. I am new here and not sure about posting but I feel like I am all alone. I had surgery 10 years ago, I didn’t ever lose that much weight with it and ended up getting sick and not being able to keep up with my running which I miss more than anything. Anyway, I am 20 lbs over the weight I was before my surgery. I am always so tired and I could sleep anywhere at anytime, although the test said I didn’t have sleep apnea. My BMI is a shameful 45. I wasn’t sure who to contact so I contacted my Bariatric Doctor’s office. I am unable to go to the one that originally did my surgery. I’ve been dealing with a NP (which I really adore) that told me no to a revision, but she’s put me on phentramine and they don’t even give me energy and I never had a problem with over eating I have a problem with forgetting to eat 🙄 All of my pills I have to take now makes me sick, I feel nauseous all of the time, zero energy. I have been checked for depression (of course vitamin levels) I take those even though they make me nauseous. This dr is 3 hours a way we’ve only been able to do telemed visits. I would like another opinion but I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes and get in trouble with dr shopping or have anyone mad. I wasn’t sure if people start out with their PCP or surgeon. sorry I rambled I’m nervous and so confused! Idk where in the world to go from here. Lol thanks for listening to me.

    Medication absorbtion

it's more an issue for bypass patients than for sleeve patients.
  22. The Greater Fool

    Medication absorbtion

Absorption for Sleeve folks should theoretically remain unchanged. Ultimately, your digestive system has not actually changed, you stomach has just been reduced in size. For Bypass folks, we no longer have a meaningful pyloric valve as a small part of our intestines have been bypassed including the Pyloric Valve. So, any meds drop straight through our stomach (pouch) directly into our intestines. Many time release mechanisms count on the medication sitting in the stomach, at least in part, for a time. Since these now don't sit in the stomach and go into and through the intestines before the time-release mechanisms can do their thing, some time released medications just don't do their thing as much. Initially it was trial and error: if time released works, great. If not, I can 'time release' them myself by taking normal release through the day. As I age I just don't bother with trial and error and assume time release won't work. For me there are some time release things that work such as slow-FE which is time released iron may not work optimally, but it works well enough to keep my iron levels in the green. I've been doing it for years and see no point in changing. Time released pain meds, on the other hand, just don't have any effect, so no time release pain meds for me. Then there are the important meds that one doesn't generally feel an effect. Generally my Docs don't want to take a chance, and since I already do my own time release with other meds they have no issue adding others to the morning, noon, and night routine I already have on meds. A lot of this stuff is personal experience. Good luck, Tek

    Getting closer… timeline question

Once I finished my last test, and got my results, my paperwork was sent to my insurance. Approval took about a week or so and THEN I got the call to schedule. No point in scheduling if insurance said no they said. Not that I was worried, I also had a strong belief my insurance would cover it. I am having a revision so the first surgery was scheduled for maybe 4 weeks (a month) after that. I’m an educator like your husband and also had to consider my schedule. I think once everything is in order it will go quickly for you, especially if the team you are going to has several surgeons to choose from.

    Revision Dr in North Florida

I am not sure if they do revisions. You can call and ask but i had my sleeve done at Baptist Bariatrics Center in downtown Jacksonville, FL. I was self way as well since my insurance would not cover anything and i paid roughly $18-20K after everything. give them a call and see. https://www.baptistjax.com/services/bariatric-surgery
  25. I am 38 and started with a BMI of 57! Three and a half months post op my BMI is now 43! I am not far enough out to talk about long term success but as far as I am concerned (and my team), right now I am killin' it! I had an easy recovery and easily slipped through each phase and into my new normal life. I wish I did it 10 years ago. My surgery was extensive, basically 3 surgeries in 1. (Bypass, Hernia repair and esophagus repair and "trimming" due to damage from the years of GERD.... Took about 5 hours. I know everyone is different, but I also know positive stories help when people have the jitters. I was/am pretty healthy. My only medical issues were high blood pressure and severe GERD. So I didn't have a lot of risk with surgery other than the normal risks that just come with any surgery. My surgery was extensive, basically 3 surgeries in 1. PS: Bypass seems to have cured my GERD! You got this! Relax and enjoy the ride, it is so rewarding when you see your efforts paying off!
