  1. Just as something to consider: Dr Matthew Weiner (his you tube videos are great) posted this about lunch meats & other ‘protein’ snacks recently. Maybe try cooking up a little chicken breast or thigh or turkey yourself & freeze small portions to defrost as snacks. You could marinate it, add your own herbs & spices for flavour. I’d sometimes buy a quarter BBQ chicken from the supermarket eat some as a meal & freeze the leftovers in small portions for snacks. I did eat pork sausages when I first got to solid foods. I got them from my butcher who makes his own & not those mass produced highly processed supermarket ones. PS - I did run & check my protein bars for the 10:1 ratio. Mine are little over, oops, but I’m 4 yrs out so not as important.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

    Generally the food aversions are temporary & related to changes in your tastebuds & sense of smell post surgery often because of the anaesthetic. Apart from the general aversion to anything even remotely sweet, all the shakes were disgusting to me. The sweetness & the hideous grainy texture coating my teeth. Shudder! The weirdest one was vegetables. I love my vegetables & was so looking forward to the first time I could eat asparagus & sugar snap peas again but nope. Awful. Super pleased when they were palatable again. They were really the only things. Weirdest one was smoked salmon. Always found it that bit too rich & strong a flavour so could only eat a little. Gave it a try after surgery & it was fine. Ate it without an issue with some cream cheese wrapped around a wedge of cucumber. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But about two months later, it was back to being thanks no thanks. Oh, I made chicken cacciatore while on soft foods and of course added about half of the requisite white wine. Bad move. The wine tasted sour (it wasn’t) & flavoured the whole dish. I couldn’t eat it though my mother said it was delicious.
  3. I'll be 5 months on the 21st! It's flown by.i should probably avoid bread, but no one said I had to. I sometimes can eat a sandwich (just regular sandwich bread) and sometimes I find myself just picking of some of the bread. What would a week of eating look like for you? I need some ideas. I feel like I don't always have restriction anymore. I feel like I can fit in more food now before I start feeling that tight feeling or the hiccups. My weight is still moving down as well and its crazy that I'm so close to my first major weightloss goal!. I'm down about 65 pounds since surgery day. My favorite thing is that I can cross my legs and keep it there for awhile. My back, legs and ankles don't swell up much after standing for a long period of time anymore. I havent started working out yet. I had a gym membership since 2015, but no longer have a car. I feel like it's too much of a hassle to have someone bring me, so until I get another car, I'll need to find something fun to do at home. I'm losing a lot of hair too, I hope it starts to slow down soon. Some people who barely have that are so lucky! 💜💜

    Brain fog? Walking? Questions.

    Hey there. I had surgery in 2022. Here's what I experienced: Brain fog: definitely lasts at first from the anesthesia but tbh you're so exhausted from the surgery and diet that you just sleep it off the first couple nights. Brain fog comes when you're in like the 3d or 4th week post op when you've just been on liquids. I believe it's just from not eating solid foods for so long. It tires you out. I had tachycardia and fatigue all throughout my liquid, puree, and most of my soft food stages but as I started introducing soft foods, the brain fog subsided a little bit. It was more the physical exhaustion of the extreme diet and rapid weight loss that I remember. I also had brain fog from low iron. Walking: I walked a lot, even in the early stages and it was hard because of my tachycardia. It probably took me four months to be able to walk 2 miles. Before surgery I was walking 5-6 miles a day with no issue and would walk 12 miles on the weekend for pre op weight loss. So yeah, it gets the better of you but it doesn't last. I'm now over a year post op and can walk a long time. I do find that I dehydrate much easier so I need to both make sure I'm very hydrated AND bring water with me if I'm going on walks longer than 4 miles. Don't let any of this scare you. It's so worth it. Once you're healed you'll be amazed at what you're capable of. Best of luck and enjoy the journey.

I make "chicken fingers" .... pure protein and easy . 1 can of chicken 1 cup shredded cheese 1 egg ( I add 1/2 tsp.each onion & garlic powder ) Squeeze all the water out of a can of chicken and shred with a fork. Add shredded cheddar cheese and one egg. Mix and shape into fish stick size pieces. Bake on parchment paper at 400 for 20 minutes. Dip into sugar free ranch dressing. I keep a container in the fridge and eat as I want

    Worried about enough protein!

    I still have to have a protein shake every day to make sure I get mine. I do it in the morning because my tummy really doesn't care for solid food in the morning. Keep sliced turkey or chicken in the fridge at all times. Loaded with protein and goes down pretty well. Cottage cheese is also a good high protein quick thing to grab.

    If you or someone else in your household cooks meals for everyone then honestly I would advise just swooping some of that into a blender (protein, veg, tiny portion of carbs) with some gravy or other liquid OP. If the texture is acceptable to you then the flavours will be amazing after the all liquid diet. Honestly, I still have fond memories of the tiny lamb dinner I first pureed for myself after cooking it for my family. Even if it's just you at home it would be worth preparing a small normal dinner and then pureeing that and refrigerating/freezing tiny individual portions to get you through this (most tricky!) stage.
  9. THANK YOU! That's one that I hadn't run across in all my internet browsing. I am sure I'll get more information from my care team as we get closer and I go through these upcoming classes and appointments. Mayo Clinic seems to be pretty good, I'm just excited to find a surgeon that would help (weight loss is just a side effect of the surgery, I'm actually having it to fix my GERD again) I had a GERD surgery in 2005 and the wrap has started to come undone so everything causes acid and if I don't eat enough soon enough and the acid builds too much I go into non-stop vomiting for days until it works it's way out of my system, think severe food poisoning complete with hospital trips, I have entirely too many medical issues, I'm praying that these "co-morbidities" go away with the weight.
  10. Lunch meats are funky to me as well, but I do like adding lean meats to my boxes like leftover chicken, turkey, ham, or steak (steak is touchy for some, so see how your stomach reacts). And be careful that the meats aren't too dry. Leftover meat can dry out and cause your stomach problems. I also like imitation crab or shrimp cocktail for some different protein options. For me, it's all about mixing it up so I don't be bored. Eating again is so much more enjoyable. Food just hits different, ya know. The taste, texture, and smells are like trying something for the first time. Just keep in mind things that you liked before, you may not like after surgery or when you start eating again. That one weirds me out. I'm hoping my liking to those foods comes back as time goes on.
  11. Hi guys - hope you are all happy and well. I've not posted in a little while and thought id give a little update. I had a gastric bypass on June 1st and so I am almost 7 weeks post surgery. My recovery has been very good and two and a half to three weeks post surgery. I was given the all clear to swim; I've been swimming almost daily since. I had my second appointment with my surgeon on Monday and was given the all clear to do high intensity training but with some caveats. I did my first class yesterday and it felt amazing. I was the biggest in the class and actually stumbled on the treadmill. I try to hide in shame - I accepted peoples genuine concern and carried on with the class; it felt great if not a little emotional. I ate pureed foods right out of surgery followed by soft foods. I have been given the all clear to eat normal foods now. I tend to go for home made things - I love chicken and chick pea curry with vegetables, Quorn bolognaise, lentil and beans soup, salmon with five bean salad - I'm really enjoying my food. I eat little and often - around 4 small 'meals' per day - sometimes 5. That seems to work well for me as I used to be a grazer. I started at 215lbs and am now 180lbs. I'm getting there - it will be along journey but in going to keep going xx

    How Can I Drink More Water??

    I’m 5 weeks out and having a horrible time with water. The drink mixes have been too sweet now so I try to do a little bit at a time and see when it’s flavorful but not too sweet. Even sugar free Gatorade is too sweet and I try to dilute it. After my first bout with dehydration I started to pedialyte to my water. It has sugar, but all the true hydration drinks do. it’s hella sweet too, so I dilute that as well. My problem is the doctor just told me I HAVE to up my calories to 800, as I only get between 550-650 a day. Now with all this extra food I have less time to drink because we have to wait 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after eating to drink. I just don’t have the hours in the day or the space in my stomach to drink all this water. Do you think I might have a stricture?

    Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?

    I just started soft foods and have had the hardest time with things tasting burnt. The bone broths that I loved prior to surgery taste horrible so I rely on protein shakes, eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese and I found a no sugar jerky at Target that I can tolerate. All that dairy is hard on the bowels so I still take my stool softener from time to time. Last night I was trying to get my second shake in and I just couldn’t do. All of a sudden there was this thick clot of something in my mouth - I think the shake was building up on my tongue or something. I had to go in and scrape my tongue with a spoon to get all the buildup of the protein shake off. It was gross and I couldn’t finish the shake after that.

    You can also put the protein powders into a bit of room temperature water to dissolve it first. Then whisk it slowly into whatever broth or hot food/drink after it’s dissolved. This prevents the clumping and cooling your food down.

    Depressed before surgery

    It's hard, especially the preop and postop diets. The next couple of months are really important as you prepare for and the heal from surgery. I find communication is best with friends and family ( if you're telling anyone). Explaining your eating requirements and that you still want to hang out, just not always food focused. The restriction to foods is temporary. Yes, you need to adhere to your prescribed diet for life, but you can still enjoy food once you've healed. And occasionally, a bite or two of something special.

    I was allowed milky instant oats & runny scrambled eggs which were great. I puréed quite a few meats (used gravy, stock, ricotta & cottage cheese to keep them runny) but a lot just tasted dreadful (those temporary tastebud changes can make it hard) - tinned fish was the worst. I ate a lot of thicker soups (puréed meats & vegetable soups too), boiled eggs mashed with mayonnaise & high protein yoghurt. I did have some baby food a couple of times if what I’d prepared to eat was disgusting.

    Exercise Before Surgery

    exercise is great for overall health, but it really doesn't make a significant difference in weight loss (some difference - yes - but weight loss is 90% food intake, and only 10% exercise). If you're running marathons or spending half the day in the gym, well, yes - but hardly anyone has time for that. Exercise supposedly is more effective when trying to maintain weight. Suffice it to say, it's probably not going to make a significant difference - and if it hurts, don't do it. I have arthritis, which is a gazillion times better now that I'm 200 lbs lighter, but I've always done aqua fitness classes - even when I weighed almost 400 lbs. Swimming, water aerobics, or anything in water is very easy on the joints and is often recommended for people who have arthritis. So that's a possibility if you want to exercise and have that option. Otherwise, walking is always good as long as you can tolerate it.

    Regrets

    I'm six weeks post op and I'm still feeling some regret. For one, I miss my boyfriend and I being able to spontaneously go grab a few beers and some dinner. I suppose I will never be able to go have a few beers before dinner again, though I'm hoping to eventually be able to do both separated by an hour or so. HAHA! On a serious note, the last few weeks I've been hyperaware of every little thing that my stomach is feeling. I'm confused about whether I'm hungry, anxious, have heartburn, am I full or just bloated. I can "feel" every drink of fluid or bite of food go down and my stomach immediately feels like it does this bubble thing and I need to burp. Maybe some of this is mental, but there just doesn't seem like I have many moments where I'm not somehow "aware" of my stomach, even if it doesn't feel particularly bad, I am just aware that it's there. It's annoying and I'm really hoping that someone can come along and tell me that this too shall pass. And someone said something about being able to guzzle water again eventually. I really miss being able to guzzle water. I'd really like to be able to drink water more rapidly as well. HA! Also, at 6 weeks post-op, am I able to eat about as much as I'm going to be able to eat? I'd take less weight loss, if it meant being able to eat more than 1/4 cup of food at a time. 🙂 And to add insult to injury, I've only lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks, so I must be one of those super slow losers because I'm following the rules... for the most part. Thanks in advance for your input and encouragement.

    I just wanna eat!!!!!

    Before you know it, your tummy will heal. Your appetite will come back. And then you'll be scared that you're going to overeat and regain all your weight. Take this time to work on your mental relationship with food. We've only got a small window and it goes by so fast.

    Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries

    I seem to be, thank you! My biggest incision is itchy so that's a good thing! I'm doing a lot of walking, including a small hill. I am looking forward to soft foods, though. The shakes are good but I don't want to burn out on them like I did riced cauliflower a few years ago.

    My plan was 3 meals of 3oz protein + 1oz veggies from day 1 forward. The first 6 weeks it was to be pureed. I don't think I ever managed to eat a complete meal during this period, but I did the best I could. My plan didn't include 'white' starches, like potatoes or rice; During the pureeing of protein, I added less than a teaspoon of sauce, which gave me quite a variety of flavors and kept the pureed protein from being too dry/dense. Examples would be curry chicken, bbq meat, chicken alfredo, chili, or whatever else floated my boat. Good luck, Tek
  24. I can abstain- in fact, one of my horrible eating habits was to drink coffee and do work until midafternoon before I ate anything. The challenge for me is to put together tasty meals that are protein, veggies and a little carb. My wife has been great about this- she cooked a lamb steak for herself but I don't think that is easily digestible so she made me some baked chicken thighs and roasted some mixed veggies. I have a couple cookbook/online references for various recipes-to keep it interesting. I did hardcore paleo at one point and an insane work out regime 15 years ago and was in the best shape of my life. Now, at close to 70 years old, I can't work out that hard (hope to get back to the weights once the hernia heals) but it is putting together interesting meals that's the challenge right now. And getting enough nutrition in through those meals (I recognize that some of the supplements are for life, I can deal w/ that) but it is finding a balance with diet and my palate that is where I'm struggling a bit. As I can gradually eat more different foods, I'm happier, but it is still a work in progress here. Thanks, all, for your input. Deep 6
  25. Great post. I’m a year out, and I like to think I’ve changed my eating habits somewhat. Then again, I’m on vacation now with some friends, and every time someone puts out food or snacks I’m like a kid let loose in a candy store. I marvel at the non sleeved people who have greater self control than me and just know intuitively when to take a bit and when they don’t need any. Umm, where was I when they gave out that intuition? Maybe it’s because to me, vacation mode always meant indulging all the way? It’s truly one step forward, 2 steps back when it comes to changing my deeply ingrained habits, learning how to really listen to my hunger and fullness cues, and to tune in to what my body needs nutrition wise. It’s not easy!!! It took me years and years to develop these bad habits, I guess I can’t expect it to be so easily changed. I try to remember how good I feel when I listen to my body and give it the healthy nourishment it needs and how gross i feel after going on a junk spree…
