I was banded 9-28-09 and didn't eat enough protein, ate too many carbs, I was literally fighting my band. In the past 7 weeks after my last fill I have lost 16 lbs. It took me that long to get my act together and make the band my friend. I am now at 9 cc's in a 10cc band. I still haven't hit my "sweet spot" everyone talks about and I am hoping with my next fill in 1 week that I will get to experience it. I keep my protein around 60-100 a day and carbs under 30. I exercise at least an hour with cardio and weights 5 nights a week. So I am finally on track and can't wait to lose the extra weight, I already feel better. Best of luck to you and welcome to the band world. If you need a band buddy just contact me. robertsgal@yahoo.com

Surgery was on 11/10/2009

I know exactly what you are talking about. but I have an idea for the apple and pineapple juice. first they have to be sugar free. then I usually put 1/4 of a cup juice then continue with water, so it is diluted. what about soups? . my doctor put me on clear liquid diet for one month:(( I am losing but I am so fed up. anyway only 10 days to go. 20 days are over already. I know I don't want to mess with the staple line. but I will try JELLO tonight. I loved SF popsicles though. may be try a different flavor. I know everybody is different. my doctor also did not mention anything about Protein shakes in the first month and when I asked him, he said NO protein shakes at this phase. he said are you trying to gain weight??. He said after 30 days I can think of taking one Protein shake daily. -
The surgery was easy. I went home the same day. By the middle of the following week I started to feel that taking in fluids and protein was a chore. I didn't want to move away from my recliner. That was the first signs of a problem. My reasons for surgery were that I am a diabetic and had an aortic valve replaced in my heart eight years ago. That surgery was tough. The heart valve is a composite material that requires me to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. In preparation for the Lap Band my Dr took me off of the pill form of thinner and had me using an injectable thinner twice a day. The day of surgery all of the surgical team were happy with the INR value of my blood. After surgery the surgeon assisting my Dr came by to discharge me and said that they had a tough time with bleeding. By Thursday of the next week my INR level was coming up but I was not feeling the greatest. That evening I blacked out when trying to get up from my chair. I asked my wife for her auto blood pressure machine only to find that my b/p was 65/45. I called my Dr and he said go to the ER. The paramedic on the ambulance told me that he would try to help me feel better before we went to the hospital by giving me IV fluids. Three liters latter my bp was the same. I was brought to the local hospital given whole blood and transfered to the hospital where the surgery was done. Ten pints of blood, several bags of plasma and many liters of fluids I'm back to making a good recovery. Don't look at this as a minor surgery. This is serious business and please think to ask about what kind of problems can happen to you and be ready.

I had a really hard time with certain drinks. I could not do any type of electrolyte drink at the beginning. Also, the sugar from the apple juice probably isn't helping. Try drinking something warm like broth and see if you can get that down. Focus more on the liquids than on the Protein for a little while and see if that helps. I had spasms as well and anything cool or cold definitely made it worse. Good luck!

I have never experienced spasms...but I'm with the last poster....just do protein drinks and water and stay away from the juice for a couple of days. I never felt any staple pulls either...are you meaning internally or did he use staples on the outside of your incisions? I know it is the weekend but they really don't mind if you are calling with questions, I too called more than once. What you are complaining about is not listed in any of the signs for trouble in the book I got from Minkin and the My New Self folks...did you receive one too? Or how about the paperwork from the hospital? If you don't feel comfortable calling over the weekend...just call Mon morning...but I would call...if for no other reason than a peace of mind! Keep up posted! Tracy w.

Man, I really can relate to so much of this. I do a "chew and spit" thing all the time, too. Not only do I not enjoy food but the process of planning what to eat or forcing myself to eat is extremely anxiety-inducing for me, too. I didn't have all of these complications you had to deal with, but from day 1 I've had a really (irrational) intense worry that my new stomach isn't strong or that if I get something stuck it will just tear or explode... things that don't even really make sense or have any chance of actually happening. I feel much, much better when I restrict my calories. Maybe not physically. But mentally, on the days I have some reason (whether real or invented) to greatly restrict my calories, I feel like I'm doing well. The days I actually eat 1000-1200 calories - I've only had two of these days - I feel absolutely horrible and the urge to drink nothing but a Protein shake or two the next day is almost unbearable. The fact that I do lose more when I starve and stall or gain when I eat enough, coupled with how good my bloodwork still looks, just reaffirms my positive reaction to not eating enough and my anxiety and self-criticizing just pushes me further away from actual physical health. I'm in therapy too. Let's hope we both kick these problems in the ass in the end.

hang in there paty. in my opinion the pre diet might be the hardest part. if we are able to maintain a diet we might not need the lapband. i am lucky, my dock just wants me on 3-4 small meals a day with tons of Water, Protein and Vitamins but i know how tough it is to diet. i put me email up above. feel free to contact me

congratulations on your surgery. lots of luck. youre right on target. the foul breath is from ketosis. just keep on popping those listerine strips. too bad there's no protein content in them! the good news is once you start eating purees and bring some carbs back into your diet, i.e. bean dip, hummus, the bad breath will be a thing of the past. Just hang on...you'll get there.

I was told 64 oz combined protein and liquid...although all protein is liquids at this point. So similar to what you were told.

No one really gets it
KittyCathy22 replied to chelseasandra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also 22 and had gastric sleeve on April 5th. I actually posted concerns like this on here about a month ago but have had not one complication since my surgery. The only thing that happened after was I threw up from all the pain meds and anaistesia. I don't do well with pain meds. I will be straight honest with you that it will be a very big challenge for you in the beginning but I am 3 months out and struggled terribly in after but am now doing better and do not regret my decision. I did horribly the first couple months but I truly know I would of ate myself to death if I did not choose this option. The struggle is all mental and I still deal with anxiety and depression but I have always had it but masked it with food. I am now forced to face my demons head on and not hide behind food but I feel like that I really did need that. I have lost 35 pounds so far and already have so much more energy and no pain in my back and neck. It will be scary at first but I promise you will make it through. 4 members of my family had gastric bypass and are 10 years out with no complications. If you ever need someone to talk to you can message me ❤ Sent from my 0PM92 using the BariatricPal App -

Has anyone tried this/have opinions on it? It seems very popular in some circles but I can't find mention of it here (I searched the forum and found no references). The nutritional profile looks good, although it is not 100% whey which seems to be what people regard as the "gold standard"? http://www.howtobeast.com/review-trutein-chocolate-peanut-butter-protein/ http://bodybuilding.ultimatefatburner.com/trutein.html

Hi Lori, I haven't struggled with energy myself, but if at all possible, try increasing your Protein. Even it you get it from protein Soup (Unjury), other protein enriched drinks or an additional shake. Are you on any Vitamin /mineral supplements?

I still have to drink protein shakes for at least three weeks before starting the mushies stage. So I don't have any experience yet with blended foods. I suppose every body is different, and my body might be recovering more from the hernia repair I had as well as the Lap Band. Sorry I'm not much help!
-
It's been 10 years since I had my reduction and I didn't have the band at the time. But based on my recollection of recovery the protein shakes will be good. You won't have much of an appetite for a few days. I wish you the best on your surgery. You will be thrilled with the outcome.

I am having breast reduction surgery on tuesday will having this surgery affect my band in any way? I know my appetite won't be the best for the first few days after surgery so I was wondering if I should just do like protein shakes. Hoping someone can give me a little advice on this subject. Wish me luck.

It's a stall. I'm in one too. They're frustrating as all hell but unavoidable. Our bodies are adjusting and need a break from losing. I'm at Week 18 and have been stalled 3 weeks. I'm eating the right foods and calories, enough protein, enough water, enough exercise but still no loss yet. Hanging in there.

Does surgery help Gout?
doggz109 replied to sugarmamma7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have gout as well and currently take Allopurinol to try to keep it under control but still get the occaisonal horrible attack. I've been told that the high Protein intake during pre-op and for awhile post - op can actually trigger attacks. Especially since you can't really take any meds for a little while. Plus when you are immobile in the hospital and resting afterwards.....easy for crystals to start settling in your joints with inactivity. Walk when you can! I'm not looking forward to that. However, thinking LONG TERM I think it can only get better since you will have less weight affecting joints and eating less. Many food that can trigger gout (beer, soda, rich fatty foods, etc) are very limited as well if not outright forbidden....so that helps too. Hopefully we both get some relief after surgery eh?? Good luck! -
So I was sleeved yesterday here in Mexico and it went very well. The doctor and his staff are amazing. I wasn't in any pain until today. I think I did too much walking around this morning. I was able to drink about an ounce of water. It hurt my tummy. It was too cold. So I let it sit at room temp for a while then took another sip and felt fine. I got like 3 hours of sleep last night! Jet lag is real. But I always get like that the first day especially traveling from the East Coast. Oh and Dr quinones is very nice and knowledgeable. He answered all of my questions even though I had spoke to him over the phone several times before. I feel totally secure. I traveled alone. My fiancé just started a new position and could get the days off. But I feel safe here at the hospital. Tomorrow I go to the hotel where there is nursing staff there as well. I'm looking forward to the broth! I am worried about the first few weeks and protein intake. I guess I will take it one day at a time.

The Surgery and Muscle
efierke replied to Joshua Barbour's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're certainly going to lose some muscle mass, but it doesn't have to be a lot - keep up with your protein intake (80 grams a day can be harder than you think when you're "just not hungry") and start gentle exercises as soon as your surgeon clears you (emphasis on GENTLE) -

Hello everyone.. I am new to the forum. This is my 4th week.. had my sleeve on 10/22/12..Have lost about 23lbs..but have not lost anything in the last week. I am feeling fine.. however, I am not able to eat very much..not because I can not tolerate the food but because I feel so full right away.. I try to drink my water and try to get my protein in, but I just can't. Is this normal? Did anyone go through this? Does it get better? Any suggestions?
