    Carbonated drinks

If I remember correctly, i wasn’t really told to stay away from carbonated drinks more so than to stay away sugary/high calorie drinks (pop, beer, juice, etc). with that said, i drink carbonated/sparking water almost every day (am 3.5 yrs post op) i *think* i had my first sparkling water (i.e., perrier) 2 or 3 months postop? I can’t remember….
  2. I have a question. My sleeve surgery was on March 31st (2022) On April 4th I started eating small amounts of vegetable soup to get my bowels moving. It didn't bother my stomach one bit. Next day...I tried cottage cheese. Yesterday I had a salad with chicken. No problem! I'm doing less than 500 calories a day BUT I'VE only lost 7 lbs since surgery!!!!!!!!! Do I need to go back on liquid diet? What am I doing wrong?

    Bypass but with keto

Exactly. Given the protein goals post wls, to achieve the correct ratio of fat required to be Keto-proper is challenging to do while staying under a certain calorie number AND with reduced stomach size. Handy calculator here for info purposes: https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/ I think alot of folks are likely doing something more along the lines of Atkins or Modified Atkins. I did ultra-low carb, with min protein and max calories goals during weight loss phase, and let the fat fall where it may. After goal, it took about 6 mnths to break this habit, and now at 3.5 years out, i basically eat whatever i feel like so long as i stay at or below 1800-2000 cals a day most days (i’m 5’2”). Its worth noting, however, that “whatever i feel like” looks alot different than what it did pre-wls. To the OP: do what works for you until it doesn’t, then do something else. Good Luck! ❤️
  4. I'm 3 months post op and that happened to me for a while month 2. It still happens some days but not nearly as often. I believe it's just the new digestive system and being so new post op you're in an extreme calorie deficit and your body still might be playing catch up so you get fatigued easily. Take your vitamins. Keep your protein and water intake in the green and eventually the sleepiness goes away. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Advice!

I stuck to my 2 week 800 calorie a day pre-op diet religiously, only to have my surgery cancelled the day, no *the night* before, on the most spurious of pretexts. After that I was waiting for the results of various tests and thinking I might get the call any time, so I stuck to the diet until I got a second definite date, which was a full 2 months after my original date. Then it was right in to the 2 week proper pre-op diet again. I ended up losing 25lbs in those 2 months and boy am I glad that I don't have those still ahead of me. So - I wouldn't change a thing. But you do you! We all approach WLS differently. Just don't do anything you'll regret. Once you're on the pre-op diet, do that.
  6. Well I screwed up my PreOp diet today. I was on the two weeks high protein low calorie diet (I’m in week 2) 3 protein shakes a day , one small meal kn the evening (300 cal or less) and a couple things of dairy and fruit during the day …. well that’s was going fine until I went to my office for the first time in months today .. got roped into a team lunch and totally went off the rails … Do I tell my surgeon or just get back after it tomorrow and keep it clean till my surgery next Tuesday?
  7. Homemade potato soup + 1/4 of an oven baked pita + an espresso martini (not shown) = 362 calories. Ate it all P.S. This potato soup is ridiculously delicious. Here is the recipe if anyone is interested. Im thinking im going to use it as a base for a seafood or clam chowder in the future. Omg, yum. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/13218/absolutely-ultimate-potato-soup/ I spilt the recipe in half and there is still so much of it! Will make a 1/4 batch next time cuz its super filling and leftovers will not freeze well.

    Eating

In the early stages post surgery, many of us have to eat & drink on a schedule, regardless of whether we want to eat. I had no hunger at all for a while, but forced myself to eat and drink at intervals. Previous posted gave a good suggestion of setting alarms as reminders. I would also track carefully, with little goals like, "drink this 16 oz of fluid before XX time", knowing that if I didn't, I wouldn't make my fluid goals for the day. It is easy to fall into the thinking that not eating is okay and will result in more weight loss faster (I know my brain went there in the beginning sometimes, when eating was a chore), so when we don't feel hungry we can be tempted to just go with it and not try and stick to a plan. But, it's not true, especially if you are missing protein goals. Too low of calories is not good for us long term, and can have the opposite effect on weight loss. And lack of protein means your body may cannibalize your muscle instead of the fat we want it to use up.

TBH it took me until I could eat enough to get to about 500 calories. Then little by little I got stronger and begun to clean the house again. I still have days where I am vomiting a lot but they are getting less and less. Then all I do is huddle on the sofa again. Keep up with your liquids if you can x

WLS and MS (getting the sleeve)

I do this, as we have to be pretty on top of vitamins with the significant malabsorption with MGB (multi, D, calcium gummies + b12 sublingual). So far it works and my numbers are good. Make sure to choose the ones made of sugar alternatives instead of straight-up syrup, and do keep in mind all of them have calories.

    Bypass but with keto

THIS!!! I did keto for nearly 8 months. Had REALLY good success...at first. But you can't live like that forever, and if you have a slip up...oh boy. It's like all the weight you lost finds its way back WITH A QUICKNESS!!! And you have to have some carbs, some fats, some calories in your diet to be healthy. Has to be balanced and in moderation, but trying to live on keto forever just isn't feasible.
  12. So my packed salad lunch from last week was getting longing looks from my hike-mates so i am doing them a solid and packing two giant salads to share among us for a another hike this afternoon. 798 calories for the contents of TWO of these. There will be 4 of us sharing this. …converting those around me into salad-believers, one salad at a time..😂

    Sleeve with high BMI

Trust me people have all sorts of opinions about what other people should do. Don’t get weight loss surgery, they knew someone who did and didn’t lose any weight. Don’t get this specific type of surgery, don’t expect to lose all the weight, etc etc. Weight loss is eating at a calorie deficit. Surgery helps us eat at this deficit by providing a physical restriction. Literally the only difference between losing 80 lbs and 180 lbs is eating at that deficit for longer. You can do it, just stay patient and keep the course!

    Food Before and After Photos

First meal probably about the same but second meal more. I could only eat one egg & nothing else. Remember ordering 1/2 a grilled tomato as a side to an egg at 8 months but I could only eat one bite. But that was me & we can be very different. How much I am able to consume also depends on the food I’m eating. Portion size & (approx) calories still dictate how much I put on my plate. Usually it’s all I need but sometimes I can’t eat it all.
  16. Made some Jalepeño Cheddar Corn Bread this AM that we ate with Jerk Chicken wings from the frozen section of the grocery. 2 wings and some cornbread (1/16 of the pan skillet contents) for me: 380 calories. Ate all the bread and one chicken wing (the skin on the wings were too soft for my liking).
  17. Oh wow! 200 300 calories that's quite a difference from what we normally had, naturally the body goes into shock and low on energy! but hopefully we will all succeed in our Target, I'm sure in the long-run everything will be a lot easier and it will be worth it all 🙏🤞👍

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello. I had my sleeve surgery on the 4th as well. Every day is a little better, but it is not easy. I’ve been struggling with getting enough fluids and protein in. I’ve been really bloated so can only have a few sips at a time. Also I’m feeling really weak, but every day I feel a little stronger and every day I can take in a little bit more. Never thought it would be possible to get by on 200-300 calories a day, wow, but that’s all my body wants right now. How are you doing?

    What's Your Food Nemesis?

My big food love was noodles. It could be real Chinese or Thai ones in a flashy restaurant or the cheap as chips blocks which are full of calories and hidden additives at the discount supermarket. I loved them all. I would have eaten them for breakfast, lunch and dinner if I could. I am not able to eat carbs yet, not enough room in my tummy but these might be first on my list

    After Surgery Dislikes

Hey there! I’ve been lucky enough to like everything I ate (except for the bad stuff) before surgery. Great upside was I hate sweets after surgery. Cakes, pies, candy, just uuuugh too sweet. Fried foods I also have an aversion to. I like all of the protein shakes and a few new ones too. it’s funny about this ratio yogurt I just found it yesterday at Publix and I love it. It’s thick but not thick and layered with sugar alcohols like Oikos. I can’t stomach that. It’s not low in calories though so I’ll have to see how it fits into my plan.

    expected weight loss curve

I should say too that 600 calories a day sounds really little to me - is that until you get where you want to be or just for the first few weeks?

Messing up my pre-op diet 😩

Mine too - is that not how the liver gets shrunk? I was on 800 calories a day for 2 weeks pre-op. OP I hope you can get back on the horse and not slip again - it would be awful if your operation didn't go ahead. It is super hard though. Good luck.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

I had a tendency to stall for long periods then drop a ton quickly…. Then stall for forever and a day again… rinse and repeat. Overall it was agonizingly slow food wise now: Breakfast: a slice of toast with peanut butter or avocado. If peanut butter I will add 1/4 of a banana (sliced) lunch: P3 peanut cluster pack and a chobani yogurt. dinner: chicken/shrimp/ rarely pork or beef (pork for some reason my stomach can’t handle very easily. That was the first food that gave me foamies and it sits like a rock in my stomach 🤷🏼‍♀️) for snacks I tend to have nuts or cheese or yogurt. im boring with food. I tend to do what works and that’s it. I don’t like to think about food and honestly I am never really “hungry”. I think I’ve only been hungry once since surgery and it was one of those things where I was working on a home improvement project and lost track of time/forgot to eat and missed eating for almost the whole day. So I really don’t even classify my hunger as coming back yet since it was only the one time. I just got Invisalign so I am not really wanted to snack much either lol. My calories were in the 1000 range up until a few weeks ago and my nutritionist freaked out because she said I should be 1700. I had a meeting with a different nutritionist and she said I could push myself to 1400-1500. So that’s what I did and I started losing again. Their reasoning was that they didn’t want my metabolism and body to adjust to 1000 calories because that wasn’t sustainable long term. typically people say that you have a bounce back from your lowest weight. My family is a tad concerned I lost “too much”. I do have lots of loose skin 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t like it so I tend to hide behind clothes. as far as osteoarthritis… with that amount of weight loss I actually hardly feel any pain and can walk around like it’s nothing. I can’t run (high impact) or jump (also high impact) but easier exercise is fine. I’m currently taking it easy because I played basketball/handball with my students and stressed my knee out by doing all the things I shouldn’t have been doing 😅 I tend to walk A LOT. I have a big campus and I walk back and forth all day, I have a standing desk with no chair so it encourages me to walk/rotate the room. My arthritis was so advanced it looked like an X-ray from someone who is in their late 80’s and they were talking knee replacement surgery. I was in a wheelchair. They wouldn’t do the surgery Because of my weight and my age (too young). By doing the weight loss surgery I have put off that need for a knee replacement indefinitely.
  24. I’ve been trying to work out of a stall, and I did confirm my bust out with negative scale action. The thing is, I noticed that I was drinking more water than normal, like my body demanded it. I was breathing deeper, not panting, just like deep yoga breaths, I was sleepy earlier (good for combating night snacking). And I was finding myself chilly on this lovely Spring. What clues does your body tell you BEFORE you see the scale when you’re burning calories? Or what clues do you see when you are maintaining properly?
  25. I love mindful eating. Or as another way to say it, I hate counting calories. I could not stay on programs like weight watchers very long, or use calorie counting apps, because I would get obsessed with it. I would think about it all day, and at night when I had used up my points or calories for the day, I would sit around anxiously thinking how I’m hungry and I wasn’t allowed any more food. Deprivation. So as someone posted above, this whole experience has been freedom. Finally, I really am satisfied after I eat, and I know that when I get hungry again, I can have more food. I just keep it within the parameters set by the nutritionist, and count protein. (although by now, I have a food routine, and don’t need to count) I do not eat foods that contain more than 5 g of fat, and I do not eat added sugar. Good luck!
