As for any negativity towards any form of WLS, you can safely ignore 100% of people who have never gone through it because they have no idea what they're talking about. Regarding revision, I had the sleeve done in Dec 2016 and did very very well at first. I lost about 120 lbs. in about 6 months of so, reaching my goal. Then after some personal and professional setbacks, I stopped paying attention to what I was eating, stopped tracking, stopped weighing and measuring, started eating junk again, and over the next few years regaining almost everything. In Nov 2021 I had the revision to sleeve. My doctor did an endoscopy and said my sleeve was dilatated and therefore I could either resleeve to tighten it up, or revise to bypass. He recommended bypass because I also had GERD, and I took his advice. I'm down nearly a hundred pounds now since November and very happy. Still doing what I'm supposed to do, and I know the pitfalls to watch out for from last time. The GERD is gone too which is very nice.

Lost 80 lbs pre surgery
JourneyOfRabia replied to Stillnotsure's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think you should get the surgery done. I was sort of in similar boat few YEARS ago. Basically I finally build the courage to go with the surgery and started my research and started to lose some weight I think it was 40lbs and then though oh if I can lose this much I don’t need surgery. I was wrong. Soon I hit a stall and to move the stall I was told to have some extra carbs and calories and then it was just so hard. I regret not getting the surgery. so few years later I’m back on researching gastric bypass and scheduled my seminars at 2 hospitals. -
Thank you! I was having issues with the band, and that's why the surgeon was suggesting the bypass. I've heard of some sleeve patients that had revisions to the bypass. I think I'm just leery of the whole rerouting. I wish you much success, you only have 4 weeks! Please stay in touch and let me know how you like the bypass as opposed to the sleeve. I have an appointment with my surgeon on September 5th. I'll let you know what he suggests! *September 1st, not 5th.

You're welcome! I had gastric banding in June 2009, and had it removed last year June. I realized that I wanted to get another WLS in May 2022. So, I called Aetna to see what my out of pocket expense would be. When I had my band removed last year, my total out of pocket cost was $50. I'm not sure the final cost for this surgery, as it will be based on the # of days I will stay at the hospital. I want to get the gastric sleeve, but not sure. My surgeon may recommend gastric bypass, due to the issues I had with the band. I still have concerns about that---I don't know how I feel about rerouting! I chose the same surgeon who did my gastric banding. I set up the appointment in May and I've been completing all of the necessary clearances and pre-op items.

New Member/Revisions
jenuinelygenuinely replied to CDMC1972's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome!!!! I had the sleeve in 2018 and now getting a revision to a Bypass at the end of August. Personally I wish I got the Bypass in the very beginning. I have severe GERD and a twist mid stomach of my sleeve. I started the revision process March of 2021 and now getting the surgery. It was a long process because they have a program for revision patients called "Back on Track" and it requires 12 weeks of dietitian visits. -
Good afternoon! I just became a member today! I had a gastric band in June 2009 and had it removed June 2021. I am currently in the process of getting another WLS. I am interested in getting the gastric sleeve; but I have to make sure I don't have any esophageal damage from the band. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I haven't told many people because of the issues I had with the band and some the negativity I have heard and still hear regarding WLS. I welcome any advice or experiences that anyone is willing to share regarding revision surgery. Thank you!

I have Aetna Choice POS II and it paid for everything connected to my bypass three years ago (aside from my annual deductible). They did require six months of a structured weight loss program. I had finished one six months earlier (a last-ditch effort to lose weight), and they counted it even though it wasn't right before surgery. I would also note that Aetna turned me down the first time and my surgeon had to call them directly before they finally approved me. Good luck. It's worth it, no matter how long it takes to get approved!

I am approaching my 1 year anniversary since my revision and I really wish my doctor gave me this medicine. I was lucky and didn't need it (yet) but it's was worrisome for me because I have read it is a common problem after WLS. Every time I felt a pain, I thought "Oh no, it must be my gallbladder!"😅

Surgery is almost 6 months out
cheryl o replied to kalmond6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
congratulations! yes the hunger will go away. Are you having the sleeve or bypass? I had the bypass on November, and my hunger shut down for 2 weeks. Now i feel "hungry" but not like before, and a protein shake shuts it down. Its all mental and it is easy as you progress, good luck!!! Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Anyone in MINNESOTA?
jenuinelygenuinely replied to suzannethemom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I know this is an old thread but I live in Lonsdale. I use to live in Lakeville and even though Mayo is a long drive it is well worth going to the Bariatric program there. I am getting a revision August 29th. I am pretty use to driving to Mayo because my little cousins live out there and I pick them up occasionally. I had my sleeve done with Fairview and I did not like the nutrition program there. Funny story when I first started my whole journey back in 2017 I went with Park Nicollet first, and with their program you first see some sort of therapist. She denied me for any surgery and told me I had a eating disorder and I needed to do the Emily program for 12 months!!!!!! I went home crying! There was NO WAY I had an eating disorder! So I made an appointment with Fairview's Bariatric program a week after that and got my sleeve done. Couple months after that I got a piece of mail saying that provider is no longer employed with Park Nicollet. -

I also have severe GERD and my endoscopy showed a twist in the middle of my sleeved stomach! Which causes mild obstruction. My surgeon told me the surgery failed me and a revision is needed to get it fixed. I started the new bariatric program with a different hospital March 2021 and my surgery is scheduled for August 29th. Are you on a strict clear liquid diet? -
August surgery buddies!
jenuinelygenuinely replied to Connie88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am scheduled August 29th for a revision from sleeve to bypass! I start the clear liquid diet August 15th and I am beyond nervous for that! My sleeve back in 2018 required no strict diet other than drinking magnesium citrate the night before. August is such a busy year for us as well! Birthdays and the big MInnesote State Fair. I am a faithful state fair goer...and it always runs from August 25th until Labor Day. I am contemplating on going just for the walk and to keep myself busy but the smell of food will definitely torture me! I've been reading a couple of member's liquid diets and it is far more flexible than mine. Sample menu is 4 protein shakes daily, 32 oz of Liquid IV, and 16 oz of regular orange juice. That is required for a daily meal. Then between is water, broth, sugar free jello and popsicles. I can have decaf coffee and tea as well as sugar free drinks but a lot of sugar free drinks still has 5 calories. -
VSG to RNY: please give me your stats
jenuinelygenuinely replied to Heather0811's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey!!! I got my sleeve done in 2018, and had severe GERD and weight regain. I lost 60 pounds with the sleeve and maintained for about a year and a half. I regained all that weight back and went back to the weight I was day of the surgery. During my pre-op endoscopy and barium test they found I did have acid reflux and found a twist in my stomach!! Which causes mild obstruction which explains the casual vomiting and GERD. I am so happy I went with a different Bariatric program. I am scheduled for my revision August 29th! -
It is a not uncommon result of rapid weight loss (not just from surgery, but that is the most common means of accomplishing rapid weight loss,) maybe 10% have that problem, give or take? My surgeon routinely removes it when doing the DS as he doesn't want some other surgeon going in there and getting lost in the altered anatomy (which is weird for them, not so much for the bypass folks.) With the sleeve, he leaves it alone unless he feels stones in there when he is doing the surgery. So, I still have mine, but my wife, with her DS, doesn't, and we haven't noticed any great difference beyond what the WLS is already doing (there's always changes when you alter the body's default condition.)

Starting new journey what was your timeline
SkinnyMingo1408 replied to JourneyOfRabia's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My insurance covered nothing. Also I work in the school system so once the decision was made I was anxious to get my surgery done as close to the beginning of summer as possible so I would have the summer to heal and miss as little work as possible. I am taking on a new position in the 2022-2023 School Year and was told that frequent absences would not be good. I'm leaving a situation where I was part of a team and easily covered, to a position where I am alone and have to have a substitute. I saw my surgeon for the first time on April 29, 2022. He explained the sleeve and the bypass and ask if I had a preference. I had done some research of my own and wanted the gastric bypass RNY. He agreed that was the best choice for my case with my co-morbidities. I was given the tests that I would need to take but he used a lot of my existing tests because I was self pay and I already had a Psychologist that was ready and willing to write a letter, so I didn't have to wait for that. I went back May 27th with all my clearances and tests done and he made it my pre-opp appointment, knowing I was anxious to get it done soon. We scheduled my surgery for June 7,2022. I went in on June 7, 2022 and had a routine surgery with no hiccups. I was released from the hospital June 9, 2022. Follow- up with my surgeons PA (Just as awesome) was a week later and I saw the dietician then to. I talked to the dietician 5 weeks after that and she checked to see how I was progressing into soft food. I will get to start slowly adding solid food on August 4th but I will hold off until the weekend in case it doesn't go well. My next appointment with the PA and the dietician is in the office on September 15. I was able to return to light duty on July 11th. No heavy lifting but lots of walking (4000-7000 steps a day). I actually ran a couple times and didn't die!!! I hope this helped😊 -
It's common for the Gall Bladder to go sour post-op, I'm not sure they know why. It often resulted in a second surgery removing the GB. My surgeon made it a practice just simply to remove it with Gastric Bypass. Knowing this I had a long talk with my surgeon that I didn't want my GB removed just because. I got him to promise that he would not remove it unless it definitely deserved to be 86'ed. As it turned out, he removed it because he said it was necessary. Knowing me, he had ready pictures of good GBs and my GB, and the reports on my GB. He had me dead to rights. I can't say I've noticed that it is missing. Good Luck, Tek

Welcome! Oh my gosh I’m sorry you had to have revision surgery but sounds like you caught it in good time and you’re on the mend now. I keep telling myself this soon shall pass! I’m on soft/purée foods now and so far so good. I still need to drink one shake a day to get my protein numbers.

Hi! Just joined for support, but I had my surgery on July 5th, with a revision on the 8th due to a leak. I'm now 16 days post-op and have been feeling better day by day, but I'm on the protein shake struggle bus and doing my best to keep pushing through. Down 11lbs as of my first post-op appointment on the 19th and looking forward to it continuing!

Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
STLoser replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Although I did not have a sleeve or bypass, I sort of had a combination. I had a SADI-S, which is a sleeved stomach with bypassed intestines. It's a single anasthamosis duodenal switch. I had not heard of the procedure when I met my surgeon. I had planned on getting bypass, but he suggested this because I was paying out of pocket, and at the time insurance didn't cover it, and I had over 200 pounds to lose and he calls this 'the most powerful operation. " I decided to go for it and I'm very glad I did. No regrets whatsoever! My husband just had the same surgery in May and he's lost about 100 so far. (jerk lol). Now we have insurance that covers it. Our insurance didn't cover any wls at the time though The surgery was still fairly new when I had it, so most insurance didn't cover it anyway, but my husband's was covered. July 12, had Lapband out, gastric bypass done. On week 1 1/2 post op. Still in the liquid diet phase. One thing I didn’t know it the awful changes with body odor. It is hideous.

Revision Dr in North Florida
Dogmom68 replied to ChristinaA424's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’m having my revision done by Dr Joey Jarrard at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. His office does accept self pay. When I was getting ready to have my VSG, my insurance initially denied coverage so they quoted me a flat amount to have the surgery. Eventually my insurance did cover my surgery but it was good to know that they were willing to work with me if I needed to self pay. The staff in his office is really great and they communicate very well with their patients. The surgery scheduler keeps me informed of every step in preparation for my revision. If you want to talk to her, her name is Samantha and she’s very nice. I think she would be able to let you know about self pay options. Their office number is 850-877-6212. Best wishes and I hope you can get scheduled for surgery soon! 😊 -

Dogmom68 replied to Heather0811's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I’m scheduled for a revision on 8/8 as well! I had a VSG 18 months ago and have had terrible acid reflux and developed a hiatal hernia. I only lost about 40 lbs after my sleeve, too. I’m hoping the revision will not only take care of the acid reflux but that I’ll lose 50 more lbs! I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I hear that weight loss is much slower after a revision so I’m hoping I don’t get really frustrated. Maybe we can be surgery buddies and keep in touch! Keep us all posted on how things are going. I start my liquid diet on Monday. Good luck with everything!😊 -
Hello sleevers, I read a lot about "I could tolerate this" and "I tried things one at a time to see if I could tolerate that" and I have a question - what exactly does it mean to you when your body does NOT tolerate something? Is it regurgitation, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, sitting heavy in stomach, something else? So I had a revision band to sleeve and I think not being able to tolerate something with the band might be quite different to with the sleeve, There are many foods that were off-limits to me with the band (some made sense, some totally did not.) Thank you very much for your input. Cay
