Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO

My dietician gave me this info .... for the general diet ( about 8 weeks out ) " Aim for 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day and between 60 - 80 grams of protein. Max= 12 oz. per meal "

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I bought all of most of those things as well. I also added a flavorless protein powder to add to the chicken/beef broth. You can also add it to pudding, oatmeal, or other soft foods. The one thing I did learn was to slowly incorporate the protein with a whisk and the broth can't be too hot. Otherwise, the protein powder becomes denatured. It gets clumpy and weird. But when I whisked it in slowly, the broth became almost creamy. I really love (still) the Premier Protein shakes. My favorite flavors are caramel and the cafe latte. The coffee one, though, actually has caffeine in it. It has the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee. I'm going to try one again today. I'm hoping that since it's a protein shake and not an actual hot cup of coffee, I'll be ok.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

So interesting! That would be cool if we started liking things we didn't like before haha (that were healthy) I actually really like the protein shakes right now and bought a ton of them so that's good to know so I stop buying for now 😅 hot chocolate for me has those warm memories you're talking about so I hope I can enjoy one for Christmas eventually but if not I'll take a chocolate protein shake! I'm starting my semi liquid diet tomorrow! I ordered sugar free jello, pudding, gelatin, 100% fruit juice for Popsicles, Creamed soups and Kettle and Fire Bone Broth (my favorite bone broth soup brand, highly recommend!) I have some leftover rotisserie chicken so I'm going to make a crack chicken Casserole and do some fun recipes with ground beef!

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I couldn't tolerate sweet things for the first few months - like sweet protein shakes (I drank a lot of Unjury chicken broth shakes). And I couldn't eat bananas for like three years - too sweet.

Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO

we were told not to count calories early out. With as little as you're likely eating, calorie intake isn't going to be a problem. We only were told to count protein grams and fluids.

Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO

At 8 weeks I was at about 800 calories per day. I went mostly on my restriction and making sure to make good food choices. That equated to about 5 to 7 ounces per meal depending on the texture. Most of my calories came from protein. My team didn’t give a calorie goal but instead advised what I outlined above. I am now at four months, and have added in more exercise, and therefore more calories. I have slowly added in carbs while watching my blood sugar levels as well to balance my diet. Looking towards maintenance, I was told to balance calories and activity to maintain weight…all while making good food choices.
  7. I'm also wondering. I'm 4 weeks post-op. Everything I've read, however, says that in the first 2-3 months it should be anywhere between 300-600 cal. I've set my limit at 500 (which includes 75 cal and 21 carbs from vitamins) because I'm eating solids now and those tuna, chicken, and beef servings are pretty high in cal even though I don't exceed 1/2 cup servings of anything. I'm a revision sleeve to bypass. I use Baritastic to document my cal, protein, carbs, fat, calcium, and H2O. I don't have another appointment until July 24th. Every doctor, though, has different opinions about our nutrition. Your best bet would be to contact the doc's office and just ask. I should probably do the same, lol!

I could add shredded chicken/beef to up the protein per divided serving.

    Favorite Foods/Shakes/Recipes

There's a reason Shelly's Baked Ricotta is the most popular soft food recipe in the WLS community. It's basically lasagna minus the pasta and it is amazing after weeks of protein shakes and sugar-free jello. Pro tip: divide the recipe into 8 ramekins or small glass dishes before baking. https://www.food.com/recipe/shellys-baked-ricotta-324036

    Maybe finally doing this

It will be alright. Some of your issues probably will get better for you. I am 74 and I am going through this process now. I wish I had the option in my 30’s. I am proud of you for confronting your weight issue.

    July 2023 buddies

Hi Lindsey. My surgery was the same day. I am have trouble getting the some fluids in as well, however, I have only felt dehydrated once. My surgery team said that some other things I ingest count towards my fluid intake, like protein shake and broth but I try focus on getting 64 oz of water- flavored and unflavored. It seems like a lot to take in many days. All the best!
  12. Good Morning Everyone! QOTD is what is your favorite recipe/foods/shakes for your pre or postoperative surgery? I am still able to eat many foods except for carbs still so I haven't delved into Bariatric recipes yet, but I will share mine once I do! For now I've been trying a lot of different protein shakes from Premier Protein including chocolate vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, cake batter, strawberries and cream and caramel. I love all of them, except for strawberries and cream is not my favorite, but they have been great for when I'm craving dessert! I have one for breakfast in the morning and I mix it with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen to keep my skin looking great during this process! I feel like that and my Solgar Biotin and Hair Skin and Nails has already been helping. I am big on skin care amd a Sephora "junkie" and can give anyone advice on that!

    Stalls and plateaus

Honestly and genuinely, and without disagreeing with anyone here (because only they can know what has worked for them and all of our experiences will differ) stalls and plateaus are a completely normal part of losing weight after WLS. If you stick rigidly to the plan you have been given then in the vast majority of cases stalls will break, plus eventually (sooner or later - and people get there at different rates) you will get to your new set weight. That weight might not be your ideal weight but that's what the surgery does. All of the side stuff you do along the way makes little to no difference IMO. It's window dressing. And we kill ourselves angsting about it. Sure, if we've been on a long stall and we then decide to increase/decrease protein/carbs/exercise/type of exercise/duration of exercise/CALORIES/whatever, and we resume losing weight, it is human nature to attribute the renewed loss to whatever we did. But we're working with an experimental group of 1 (me) with no control group. Basically if all the time we're sticking to our programme then that's what kick starts the new loss, not the other stuff. If I could go back in time 20 months I would just say to my post-op me "stick to the plan, use your tool, and see how far you can get. You will lose rapidly and lose slowly with no rhyme or reason. Stop comparing yourself to others - they're different to you. Surgery works, stick to the plan!!!!" I really hope this helps someone else.

    Looking for Easy Protein Snacks

I eat a hard boiled egg, or one once of meat, or a meatball. Lately I have put 1oz of walnut and 1 oz of blueberries in a toddler size container to have after work to avoid the “hangry.” Recently I cooked up some ground buffalo and mixed in some marinara, then stuffed it into some pre steamed mini peppers. Roughly it was 1 oz of meat per pepper, I only measured my 20 grams of protein needed, then stuffed the peppers with it. It was a colorful meal, but leftovers were great as a meal or snack! I absolutely love @Arabesque ‘s egg dishes and will try them!
  16. Thanks, ladies, for responding. I can try that, but I'm so paranoid of taking in more calories and then actually gaining! Ugh! I'd just sit on the floor and cry. Maybe I can add a protein shake at night, as a "midnight snack"?
  17. I got french vanilla ENSURE MAX PROTEIN 35 grams protein 1sugar 2carbs (something like that).. The french vanilla mixed with dunkin donuts coffee in the morning for breakfast taste great. Been my go to breakfast every morning. I make 10 cups of coffee, mix half of french vanilla in 5 cups then when i am ready I do the other 5 cups and mix the other half !!! have fun
  18. Well, your weight loss is really great. I lost like that when I had the sleeve in 2009. Ended up losing 149 lbs in the first 18 months. I've read and was told that revisions lose a lot slower because our bodies have adapted to a small amount of calories, so they hold on to them for dear life. I'll eat like 1 scrambled egg and 1 oz of turkey for breakfast, 1/2 cup of albacore tuna with 2 tbsp light mayo for lunch, 2 oz of chicken breast and a laughing cow Swiss cheese wedge for dinner. I am only up to 15 minutes on the treadmill though. I'm upping the time little by little. I was cleared just this past Monday for the treadmill. Maybe my carbs are too high or my protein is too low? I wasn't told to count calories, but I've read that at this point it should be between 300-600 cal/day. I use the Baritastic app to document my daily nutrition and H2O. It's pretty neat.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

I'm home right now too until Aug 8th when I go back. Initially when I detoxed from carbs and alcohol (semi-liquid diet), I did not feel weak. The first three days were a b*tch because withdrawal. Yes, even from carbs. But on like day 4, I was really feeling good. I had energy, I was in ketosis, and I was sleeping sooo much better at night. I think you'll do great at the beach, just please hydrate and take your shakes, maybe even no sugar, super low-carb protein bars, and have a good, healthy dinner.
  20. First surgery / Lost 55lbs with pre surgery diet in 5 months doing atkins / low carb. They only told me no coffee first 2 weeks. Then ok and said max 3 cups a day. I handle it great no problems. I did wait 2 weeks before trying any. I am only eating the ensure max protein shake in the morning mixed in the coffee. Protein shake by itself for lunch. 2 eggs or a can of tuna or half a can of chicken chunk breasts for dinner. keeping it simple and I am hardcore. Not counting calories at all.. I am counting protein and carbs.. Keeping carbs under 10 grams a day and you can calculate the protein its a lot.. They took my cigs. they took my weeed.. they are not taking my coffee
  21. DANG. That's A LOT of coffee. Is it decaf? Is this a first surgery for you? Mine's a revision from a 14-year-old sleeve. I was told to avoid coffee for like the first 2 months. I'm a coffee drinker too, but not as hardcore, lol! I'm going to try caffeine probably starting Monday, just to see if I tolerate it. Don't want any surprises at work. Are you getting in your calories and protein? Did you lose any weight before your surgery?
  22. I am 22 days out gastric bypass.. In the morning for breakfast I take my ensure max protein shake (0 sugar 2carb 30mg protein) french vanilla and pour half of it in 5 cups of coffee as milk replacement taste great. I make 10 cups drink 5 and then drink the other 5 and pour the other half in that. Dont tell the dr how much coffee im drinking but im not eating much... No stall yet been loosing steadily half lb or so a day sometimes .75 first few days it was a lb a day but that quit after the first 4 days.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

I am currently off of work so I will be home all day. I'm definetely going to need a lot of distractions! Did the liquid diet make you weak or not want to do anything physically? We have a mini beach getaway planned and I love to go in the water and waves I wonder if that's too much for the supervised starvation ill be on 🤣🤣 the premiere protein cake batter shake definetely takes care of my sweet tooth! I want to be under 300 for my surgery and I have 10 pounds to go I hope I can do it!

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

Best of luck!!! You'll do great! I think what made it easier for me is that I'm a teacher, and there's NO EATING in my class (cuz middle schoolers started taking "special" gummies to school and teachers thought it was regular candy). My class periods are 49 minutes long with a 4-minute passing period. We need to stand in the hallways while kids go to their next classes. There's really no time to be snacking and eating and stuff. At home, however, is was a whole different story. That's why I left my actual solid meal for dinner. As an example, I'd eat a homemade cheeseburger sans the bread, or rotisserie chicken, or pork chops. I didn't hold back on beef, chicken, pork, or CHEESE! I 🧡cheese. 😁 When I was craving sweets, I'd just drink another protein shake.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

What helped me pre-op was I started detoxing and dieting a whole month before my surgery. I started with a semi-liquid diet on May 11th. Protein Shake for breakfast and lunch and a healthy, no carb dinner. I stopped drinking alcohol and upped my water to 6 or 7 bottles a day. Then 10 days (because they had a cancellation and asked if I wanted it sooner than scheduled) before surgery, I started on all liquids. In the first 24 days before surgery, I lost 23 lbs. That really, really motivated me and made me feel so good both physically and emotionally. It also helped the surgeon with a successful surgery because of the liver shrinkage. Y'all have some awesome ideas!
