Questions For All People Wih Complications
Lisa's Hope replied to silenceshhh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are asking questions I would like to know the answers too as well. I'm still going through the process and hopefully will have my surgery date very soon. I know people say that you really can't do anything to cause a leak and I believe that to be mostly true but still wonder if we don't follow the Dr's orders, is it possible that WE can cause a leak. I feel so helpless knowing that I may do everything the Dr. tells me but may still get a leak. When they test after surgery and find nothing, I would like to think I could breath a sigh of relief but seems that we really can't do that for 8 months or longer. This complications scares me so much. -
Questions For All People Wih Complications
p77tmey replied to silenceshhh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In the beginning, Did you follow all the recomended precautions like the liquid diets a few weeks ahead and then clear liquids? I was instructed to follow a high protein/ low carb diet for two weeks before surgery, then all liquid Protein the week before (I had Water and shakes). Clear liquids were necessary the day before surgery. Did you do pre op and post op test? Did your dr. check over for leaks, if so when? I did the usual pre-op tests, like an EKG, urinalysis, blood panel. The post-op tests did include a barium swallow study, only because I was so nauseaus and had vomited in the hospital (no leaks found). I did have one test of my j-tube drainage to test for stomach acid, to be sure there were no leaks into my abdominal cavity. Did you follow the reccomended liquid diets after? and the blended solid diet there after? I followed a full liquid diet for two weeks. This mainly consisted of water, soups, and Protein shakes. I have advise for you - drink water! I became severely dehydrated and landed in the ICU two weeks post op with clots in my legs and lungs. After the two weeks, the first thing I ate was a few bites of baked potato. That was too thick..... the only things that have made me throw up since surgery (over 2 years ago) is rice, and fresh baked bread because they are too sticky and get stuck. I don't know if they would still get stuck, but after a couple times of that excruciating pain I don't want to try and find out! Did you pick up heavy things or over do it? No. The only thing I'd do differently is drink more water. When I got home, I could barely take anything in. My nausea was HORRIBLE and I probably only consumed about 4-5 oz/ day. Who was your Dr.? Dr. James Kemmerling in Green Bay, WI What kind of reaction did you have and how did you know something was wrong? Severe nausea was my worst immediate post-op complication. It took a lot of different meds to help with it and even then it was still bad. It lasted a couple weeks, and I never hope to experience it again. Also, like I mentioned I was dehydrated and got blood clots..... My eye sockets were sunken in, my legs hurt/cramped really bad, I was barely urinating, I was so lethargic/listless. Good luck! Teri -
Negative Thinking Taking Over.....
Lisa's Hope replied to Lisa's Hope's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like that last statement. So true! Congratulations on your weight loss!! That's amazing. My negative side always seems to take over. I'm not scared of the surgery. I've had several before. I know it is more the complications after if they happen because I'm self pay and I think. "oh Lord, what is something happens and no one will take care of me because I can't afford it and insurance won't pay because they didn't pay for the surgery to begin with.??"... That kind of thinking consumes me. Thank you though. Getting these positive comments helps me so much!! I love this forum and love reading all of the success stories of the people who have made it. God Bless! -
Surgeon Doesn't Do A Leak Test...deal Breaker?
kyllfalcon replied to BKMama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon does not routinely do leak tests. He has extremely low complication rates, and he is very proud of his statistics. When I presented with a low grade fever that lasted several days, he ordered a leak test plus lots of bloodwork to rule out a leak and/or infection. I had neither, the cause of the fever was not determined, but it passed in a few more days and I am doing great 8 weeks out. It would not have been a deal breaker for me, all other things considered. -
How long have you had your lap band?
missyjk79 replied to dejageel's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've had my band for five years this month I've already had it revised a year ago I lost 105 pounds which was goal for me in a two year period. Maintained for a year. I gained back 50 in the last two years with my complications from my band slipping I don't regret getting it but it's frustrating going through the issues. I feel that I have had to start over but the restriction now is way different than when I had my band the first time around. I have the same band but it was repositioned from the slip. My doctor said that there's a 50% chance that my band will slip again. Frustrating. -
i would follow exactly what your dr told you to do. you have only done a week or so, i had to follow fluids for 3 weeks. the problem is that if you dont allow your sutures to anchor in properly, and form the correct amount of scar tissue, you could have a much more increased risk of slippage, and other complications down the track, you dont want the firt time you do a PB, you end up with a slip do you.

I was nervous before my surgery, but listed the reasons for me to have it: early death, dealing with the horrendous complications of diabetes, no stamina, an inability and no desire to get out and do things. Once I had those listed, I again realized there was no alternative to getting the surgery and I was no longer nervous. Of course, your reasons for the surgery may be different and you must make up your mind about what is right for you, I just wanted to share my experience.

Becoming afraid of reading this site!!
HarleyNana replied to pati-o's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think you definately have to look at the high number of banded folks compared to the very, very small number of those with serious complications. I have no regrets. -

Bamabander posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I am packed and ready. Having another popsicle before bed. I am not nervous, but waiting for it to hit me. Please say an extra prayer for me and my fellow surgery buddies tomorrow! Hope the others that are going in tomorrow have a very easy, complication free procedure. Can't wait to hear from you all! Good Luck! -
Did Anyone Just Go And Get Your Surgery And Talk To Your Md After?
beefalogal replied to Naturals's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I made the mistake of letting my gp know and he was upset about the Mexico route. Same old stuff about a stateside doctor not being willing to help you out if there are complications. From what I have read on here most with complications had it done stateside. I still have not actually heard from someone that was refused care or that insurance abandoned since they went to Mexico. I am wondering if it is just an urban legend. -
Almost had Gastric Bypass but decided to go for VSG
BlackBerryJuice replied to Dynamo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think you've made the right choice. A friend of mine is a medical resident and she's currently taking care of a woman who developed pretty serious malnutrition-related complications from her bypass - TWENTY YEARS LATER. And the woman's still obese! My friend is not sure whether she used to be heavier, but she was clearly unable to reach a healthy weight OR be healthy in other aspects with the bypass. I would've never gone for a bypass (if I was 500 lbs - maybe, because the rewards would then be worth the risks, but not at my original size). -
A Little Discouraged....
Pinkskyy84 replied to Pinkskyy84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Everyone... doing reserch on the sleeve as I am typing this and already I can tell.. I WANT TO BE BANDED! to many risk and longer recovery and over all more complicated. A few you mentioned sagging skin that was one of my main issues with losing weight to quickly... Thanks again for all the comments/Advice.... -
That is my plan...I signed all of the consent forms yesterday and that was what made me nervous, all the possible complications! I saw your post about getting in all the water/liquids. They stressed that to me yesterday, that if I get dehydrated that I will end up back in the hospital. Good luck with getting yours in!
-
Hi Jed! I was 365 at my highest (which is pretty high for a woman) and I also had the sleeve. A couple of my friends thought I should do the bypass because I had/have so much to lose but my surgeon left it up to me so I chose the sleeve because of the slightly lower complication rate. Surgery was 1 month ago and I’ve lost 61 lbs (38 before surgery and 23 since). The good news about being REALLY overweight is you tend to lose faster than people with less to lose. Good luck to you!!

New Plan How Many Had Surgery In Mexico?
beefalogal replied to changewithin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did the insurance company say anything about not covering you for complications (if any) when you choose to go to Mexico rather than wait for the insurance company? I have Aetna and am in the process of being approved. Lots of i's to dot and t's to cross before you are sure of the approval. The co pay is nearly as much as going to Mexico so am very tempted to just do that. The aftercare insurance thing is all that is stopping me. -
Not Having A Last Supper
AliveAgain replied to CraftyV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon never gave me a pre-op diet, just directions to lower the carbs, go high protein, and try to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery. He said the most important thing is to shrink the liver to allow better access to the stomach and reduce chances of complications. It's also a chance to practice what you'll have to do more stringently after surgery, so that you don't go into emotional shock in the first two phases after surgery (liquids and full liquids). So I just dieted like normal with salads, veggies, no soda, cut out sugary stuff, ate lots of chicken, tried out a few protein shakes. But I still made time to have some of my favorites, just in very small bites. Then of course, clears 24 hours before surgery for anesthesia reasons. -
My doctor told me to cut back on smoking if I wanted the sleeve, he also said that if I was having the bypass I would have to quit smoking all together. When you smoke you end up coughing a lot after surgery that is one of the reasons they want you to quit and there are other problems it causes but don't know what they are. I would ask him about it again let him know how much and how long you have been smoking ask him about cutting back and not quitting, ask him why he wants you to quit, and what the complications are of smoking. Each doctor is different and has their own way of doing things, I was very lucky mine was ok with me cutting back I went from a pack a day to half a pack a day before surgery. After surgery I did have some coughing but the long walks to and from the smoking area helped lol.

Did you leak, who's your surgeon?
Jersrose43 replied to MUA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a complication forum here several people posted leaks and other issues. I see you're being done November 10? I wouldn't worry. It happens rarely. Less than 1% of the time -
I'm doing great. It was not as bad as I thought. They moved my date to May 17th because the woman who was before me had complications. So since the 17th I have lost 6pounds. Not bad.

I need HELP!! Gettin banded on the 29th
carvey posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Finally the day of my surgery is here 12-29-10 but I have been having mixed feelings about the surgery. I want to loose weight, I want to feel healthy but I feel scared and afraid that something bad is going to happen. I was originally schedule to have my surgery on Dec. 15th. I went to the hopital and was ready to go in but I started coughing and the anestisiologist canceled my surgery and sent me home to recover from the cold I had. Since then I feel like being in a roller coster with my emotions and descisions. I've been reading about all the complications and all the side-effects and it just made me think twice about the surgery. I need some advice on what to do. I can't postpone my surgery becasue after Dec. 31 my insurance will no longer work with my current hospital and doctors. HELP!!!! Is it really worth it to got throgh the pain and complications? Does the lap-band really work or should I try one more time on my own???? -
Humor doesn't always come across the boards. Throughout my banded process the only "diets" i've been on were the pre-op and the pos-op. They were horrible to get through. Otherwise I eat whatever I want in moderation unless my band won't allow it. Pre-op, you are a asked to drastically change your eating habits without the help of the band. But our surgeons ask us to do so for a reason. On another board a lady who was having RNY had her liver split in two during her surgery, it was so damaged and brittle from all the fat. Her medical condition going in was very poor. My surgeon said he could tell I followed my pre-op diet well, because my liver was small and very easy to move around. Our surgeons are operating on us to help us get healthier. The pre-op diet is a time limited event in our lives. Why not do everything you can to make the surgery as safe as possible for yourself? I recently had a complication from a non-related band procedure. It was a simple thing. In-and-out. Miss a day of work. Back on your feet the next day. I ended up with a blood infection (Sepsis) that has a 30% mortality rate. I was in the ER twice, had a fever of 103.8, and missed 3 weeks of work. What could have been done to avoid it? I don't know. But, not cheating on your pre-op can help to limit liver complications. ANYTHING you can do to limit complications is a good thing!

My doc has had 5 slips in 6 years of placing bands (I am number 5, yay me!) he did say that one of the four prior to me was a slip and an erosion so I know they can happen together. I know my pre-op paperwork included slippage and erosion as possible complications and therefore I wouldn't stand a chance at getting 'financial assistance' if I'd considered pursuing that avenue (I haven't, I'm a firm believer that sometimes **** just happens although my surgeon has made it blatantly clear that this slip was 100% my fault and not his). Before talking to a lawyer you need to look through everything you signed pre-op, willing to bet you agreed that slippage and erosion were known and acceptable risks.... That said, good luck! This whole thing sucks :/
