  1. Lunch meats are funky to me as well, but I do like adding lean meats to my boxes like leftover chicken, turkey, ham, or steak (steak is touchy for some, so see how your stomach reacts). And be careful that the meats aren't too dry. Leftover meat can dry out and cause your stomach problems. I also like imitation crab or shrimp cocktail for some different protein options. For me, it's all about mixing it up so I don't be bored. Eating again is so much more enjoyable. Food just hits different, ya know. The taste, texture, and smells are like trying something for the first time. Just keep in mind things that you liked before, you may not like after surgery or when you start eating again. That one weirds me out. I'm hoping my liking to those foods comes back as time goes on.
  2. I'm not looking forward to the stalls because I know how negative that can make me feel from past dieting, I don't think it'll be so bad after surgery after hearing about everyone's experiences with them. You make me feel like I'll be able to do this! The whole point of my surgery is to alleviate the GERD, I'm not technically having the surgery done for weight loss but because of another stomach surgery 18 years ago it's now my only viable option to fix my issues. I already get dumping syndrome because of my stomach issues so I'm not too worried about that. I'm just worried that I'm going to do it wrong. I imagine I'll have to be on a PPI for forever but I'm hopeful that we can at least lower the dosage down after surgery. I know scrambled eggs will be one of my go-to's for a quick protein snack because they're already my quick protein haha. I did what everyone said not to do and got a bunch of different protein supplements (i.e. shake powders, 2 oz shots, and "clear" beverage-type protein in liquid and powder. Just wanted to see what is and isn't going to work and how much I'm going to have to adjust my lifestyle. I feel like I'm going to be tied to a clock with having to space things out like iron and calcium. I'm already hesitant about a lot of meat because I have difficulty swallowing but KNOWING like really knowing and understanding how big your pouch is and what it will actually hold is probably a godsend and will save you some grief as you progress. I've been trying to pick up a little bit of this and that in preparation for it because I know when the time comes for it I'll be broke since I'll be missing a week of work if I'm not able to move around again quickly. But everyone says they're up and moving within a few days so I'm hopeful to only miss 3-4 days at the office, and I have a sedentary job that I can do from home, so that helps. So excited to see everyone's progress. Thanks for sharing your experience with us

Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?

I just started soft foods and have had the hardest time with things tasting burnt. The bone broths that I loved prior to surgery taste horrible so I rely on protein shakes, eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese and I found a no sugar jerky at Target that I can tolerate. All that dairy is hard on the bowels so I still take my stool softener from time to time. Last night I was trying to get my second shake in and I just couldn’t do. All of a sudden there was this thick clot of something in my mouth - I think the shake was building up on my tongue or something. I had to go in and scrape my tongue with a spoon to get all the buildup of the protein shake off. It was gross and I couldn’t finish the shake after that.

You can also put the protein powders into a bit of room temperature water to dissolve it first. Then whisk it slowly into whatever broth or hot food/drink after it’s dissolved. This prevents the clumping and cooling your food down.
  6. I'm having surgery in a few days so I'm taking note. 😊 For those unable to have cheese/quiche, although lots of great options mentioned here, anyone have favorite ideas for occasional "dry" items (cracker, etc.)? I see the thin bread with tuna. Thanks!
  7. These sound like much healthier options than some of the others listed!

    Brain fog? Walking? Questions.

Hi Mike, Brain fog comes from the anesthesia, and also the physical shock to the body as it’s healing. Mine took a good six weeks before I started feeling somewhat normal mentally. I still have days when I have the blahs and I’m four months out. Calorie deficit post surgery also plays a role as does hydration, which is why you need to keep your protein and water goals in mind. Walking took a while to build back up. Before surgery I was at 3 1/2 miles about five times a week. I’m now at 4 miles sometimes 5, five days a week and that took me about three months to get to. Of course, your mileage may vary, depending on your age, weight, etc.
  9. I like the snack box idea! I could totally see my own version of those P3 snack things. Minus the ham/turkey. The taste of ham and turkey lunch meat just tastes gross to me right now. So nuts, fruit and cheese or nuts veggies and cheese. Or instead of cheese, add Hummus or the Greek yogurt ranch dip we can make. It's still hard for me to eat the right things since it's not readily available so yes, I need to write down the meals I want to make and go grocery shopping. I drink more water than I have been, but still not enough. Nowhere near my protein goal either. I am thinking about keeping my carbs lower as well, but more than 60, maybe 100? I'm definitely having a great experience with this, no regrets at all. My weight has been going down and that's awesome to me 🙂

    TMI WARNING: Bowel Movement

Update So, I tried calling the Surgical Group to speak with my surgeon (as he said to call him for any inquiries), but I was unable to reach him so I left a message (and still haven't heard back from him), so I decided to do a little investigation on my own. So, yesterday I went without taking my iron supplement and did everything else, next day (today) when I woke up had a mild bowel movement. But when I took my iron supplement, that ran right through me and caused the exact same issue as before so I'm thinking it's the iron supplements that's making me create this issue. Don't know why as I've read that seems to be the case for people who take in too much iron, but I've only been drinking my protein shakes and gatorade along with the vitamins since I got discharged. I'm hoping they get back to me tomorrow, if not it's just going to have to wait until I meet with them in person for my post-op next Monday.

    Pureed Food Recipes

I was allowed milky instant oats & runny scrambled eggs which were great. I puréed quite a few meats (used gravy, stock, ricotta & cottage cheese to keep them runny) but a lot just tasted dreadful (those temporary tastebud changes can make it hard) - tinned fish was the worst. I ate a lot of thicker soups (puréed meats & vegetable soups too), boiled eggs mashed with mayonnaise & high protein yoghurt. I did have some baby food a couple of times if what I’d prepared to eat was disgusting.

    Exercise Before Surgery

exercise is great for overall health, but it really doesn't make a significant difference in weight loss (some difference - yes - but weight loss is 90% food intake, and only 10% exercise). If you're running marathons or spending half the day in the gym, well, yes - but hardly anyone has time for that. Exercise supposedly is more effective when trying to maintain weight. Suffice it to say, it's probably not going to make a significant difference - and if it hurts, don't do it. I have arthritis, which is a gazillion times better now that I'm 200 lbs lighter, but I've always done aqua fitness classes - even when I weighed almost 400 lbs. Swimming, water aerobics, or anything in water is very easy on the joints and is often recommended for people who have arthritis. So that's a possibility if you want to exercise and have that option. Otherwise, walking is always good as long as you can tolerate it.

    Pureed Food Recipes

I just could not do puree, The texture was very no no to my jumbled up taste buds. I strained soup and ate soft cheese, protein yogurts and made set egg custards

    Pureed Food Recipes

My plan was 3 meals of 3oz protein + 1oz veggies from day 1 forward. The first 6 weeks it was to be pureed. I don't think I ever managed to eat a complete meal during this period, but I did the best I could. My plan didn't include 'white' starches, like potatoes or rice; During the pureeing of protein, I added less than a teaspoon of sauce, which gave me quite a variety of flavors and kept the pureed protein from being too dry/dense. Examples would be curry chicken, bbq meat, chicken alfredo, chili, or whatever else floated my boat. Good luck, Tek
  15. I can abstain- in fact, one of my horrible eating habits was to drink coffee and do work until midafternoon before I ate anything. The challenge for me is to put together tasty meals that are protein, veggies and a little carb. My wife has been great about this- she cooked a lamb steak for herself but I don't think that is easily digestible so she made me some baked chicken thighs and roasted some mixed veggies. I have a couple cookbook/online references for various recipes-to keep it interesting. I did hardcore paleo at one point and an insane work out regime 15 years ago and was in the best shape of my life. Now, at close to 70 years old, I can't work out that hard (hope to get back to the weights once the hernia heals) but it is putting together interesting meals that's the challenge right now. And getting enough nutrition in through those meals (I recognize that some of the supplements are for life, I can deal w/ that) but it is finding a balance with diet and my palate that is where I'm struggling a bit. As I can gradually eat more different foods, I'm happier, but it is still a work in progress here. Thanks, all, for your input. Deep 6

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I would use a whisk (or you could use a fork) to slowly mix it in once it was in my bowl. The problem is that it cools the food off, but if it's too hot, the protein becomes denatured and it just doesn't work.
  17. Happy Tuesday Everyone!! So since I was three weeks out yesterday I decided that it's time to exercise before surgery. I have moderate osteoarthritis and when triggered there is hell to pay. I decided to go on a thirty minute walk around the neighborhood and I couldn't even do that without causing a flare-up after and being in extreme pain to the point of crying. I have been on tylenol codeine #3 for arthiritis flare ups 3x daily and yesterday I decided to cut it out completely because I want to get rid of as many pills as possible in my system before surgery. Normally I would just take those and be fine but that wasn't an option yesterday and it was really bad. My point is I can't even walk continuously for long without being in extreme pain. I'm not bed ridden or anything just can't do it continuously and briskly like I hoped. My point is how important is exercise before surgery? I have a tread mill and I'm going to try that today. Maybe straight walking on my joints was too much. Do you think not exercising much before will hinder my recovery or increase my chance of complications? This arthiritis, aside from my family and quality of life of course, is a main reason I decided enough is enough I'm doing this!

    Food Aversions After Surgery

Soooo in my soup yesterday I dumped the protein powder into the soup when it was ready all at once and it was a big clumpy disgusting mess 🤣🤣 I remembered you wrote this to incorporate slowly and damn was that right haha. Do you cook the entire soup first and then put the protein in little by little once it's in your bowl of soup or do you stir it in while cooking? I was so hungry I just dumped a huge scoop in my bowl of soup when it was done and steaming hot and it was so nasty I basically chewed my soup 🤣🤣

    TMI Semi Liquid Diet Diahrrea

So I'm going to be eating the same thing everyday which is: Breakfast: premiere protein shake Snack: Sugar free jello Lunch: Campbell Soup with fat free milk, added protein Snack: Sugar free pudding Dinner: Ground beef or Chicken Salad Snack: 100% grape juice Popsicle For dinner I've been putting tomatoes, shredded lettuce, Salsa, cheese, and sour cream on my meat. Right now I'm allowed to eat way more than this according to my doctor but I made this meal plan up for myself because I want to lose weight and shrink my liver before surgery. Any thoughts on this diet haha. When I hit the two week till my surgery stage I'm cutting out the meat salad 😭😭

    TMI Semi Liquid Diet Diahrrea

Make sure you're hydrating to make up for that loss of water. If you're drinking protein shakes, do they have milk or whey protein? Could it have been the milk you added to the soup? Protein usually has the opposite effect on me. The soups I used to prepare for my sleeve in 2009 were the Campbell's 98% fat-free cream soups. For my pre-op diet in 2009, I remember that I would do a protein bar for breakfast, a cream soup for lunch, and then nothing but sugar free jellos and popsicles, and of course, A LOT of water all day. In 21 days I dropped 20 lbs. This time around, I started on May 11th, protein shakes for breakfast and for lunch, and then a meal of no-carb solid food for dinner. In 24 days, I lost 23 lbs. I don't recall having diarrhea. I tend to get constipated. Are you consuming sugar-free foods? That usually does cause it. Or it could just be an initial shock to your body. It'll probably clear up soon. Give yourself time and don't forget to breathe.

    Worried about enough protein!

If you’re not meeting or close to your protein goals, go back to adding a protein shake as a snack. Or add a high protein yoghurt or blend the yoghurt with milk to make a yoghurt drink. I ate yoghurt & a yoghurt drink as an afternoon snack to push me up to to my protein goal. And don’t forget to eat your protein first, then if you’re able any vegetables & last any allowed carbs. There were often times when I ate my protein serve only because I’d eaten enough by then.
  22. The sugar alcohols used in many artificial sweeteners cause problems for many people: diarrhoea, bloating, discomfort, … Personally I try to avoid or reduce as many artificial sweeteners, sugar alternatives & sugar as I can. It’s hard because it’s in almost everything you buy. I did it to kill my sugar craving - it has. (Artificial sweeteners & sugar alternatives still feed your desire for sweet.). Also there is a lot of research being done into how artificial sweeteners still lead to weight gain, affect your immune system, etc. But this has been a personal choice for me. Generally if I want something sweet I’ll eat some fruit. But again it’s been my choice to do this. I have made chia seed pudding & used vanilla extract as flavour. There is natural & added sugar in it but it’s very little. Also added milk powder which gave some sweetness (& extra protein) & a natural sugar. What about a fruit crumble? Cook up apple, berries, rhubarb or other fruit & sprinkle the top with a mix of rolled oats, coconut, nuts, a little plain flour, cinnamon a little butter & bake until golden. Use a little monk fruit for a touch of sweetness if the fruit is a little tart & in the crumble topping. Congratulations on your daughter’s weight loss. So wonderful she’s been inspired by you to make changes in her life too.

    TMI Semi Liquid Diet Diahrrea

I'm going to try to do half a scoop of Protein tomorrow and see if maybe that was the problem because I was fine until a couple bites of that soup!
  24. So I survived my first day of my post op semi liquid diet today! Everything went great until I had Cream of Mushroom Campbell soup for lunch. I used Fairlife nonfat milk to mix it with and put a scoop of Isopure flavorless protein powder and bam sudden diahrea and I had it for hours (haven't even had the surgery yet 🤣🤣) I'm trying to figure out if it was the soup or if protein powder does this?? Any insight??
  25. I'd like to know y'all's experience with sugar alcohols/sugar substitutes. When I was in my pureed stage, my diet/menu information stated that I could eat sugar-free pudding. I had one and experienced harsh stomach pain for the entire night until the next morning. However, I recently treated myself to some plain oatmeal and added stevia packets and had no issues. I looked up the ingredients to the Jello brand sf pudding and each cup has 4g sugar alcohols. It doesn't state exactly which "itol" it has, though. Stevia (depending on how it's combined) is mostly erythritol. I'm looking for some dessert-ish foods that can satiate my sweet tooth (also trying to help my 16-yr-old daughter by replacing her regular foods with low calorie, low carb, low sugar options). When I started on my WLS journey mid-May, she became inspired and has lost 17 lbs so far! Ideas? Suggestions? Experiences?
