Hey everyone! I was just wondering if any of you have had this surgery done more than 10 years ago and if you could let me know how the long term affects are? I spoke to my doctor about this but he told me that there are not very many study follow ups on post op patients of more than 10-15 years. I'm curious because I am having this surgery done in April and my parents and I are more worried about the long term effects such as weaker bone or increase arthritis) as well as fighting infections if one was to get seriously sick do gastric bypass patients have the same strength ability to fight these infections ?? Sorry for such a serious thread I'm just 20 years old and I have so many thoughts about this procedure before I have it on April. Thank you

im not even shocked to be honest im more of an even keeled type of individual but inside im hurting its almost as if i knew i was going to be rejected somehow nothing ever seems to be easy for me /end rant anyway what kind of documentation do you think i should provide i was thinking about doing a scare tactic hiring a lawyer for an hour or two to draft me up something that i can send and my doctor is also sending something on my behalf stating that they will be responsible for making the medical decision. i just have to wait 2 weeks b4 i hear back from the doctor on that letter. they said that i cant be over bmi 50 or id die on the surgery table heres the funny thing they approve gastric bypass which is more fatal than this surgery.

Has this happened to anyone else?
healthy-me-in-Az replied to KatieKateKate's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Perhaps when someone asks why you chose band over bypass you can just say, "I just felt it was the better choice for me personally" and leave it at that. Honestly, your reasons are your own and they have no right to demand that from you. Good luck! -
I realize that my current weight is higher than some people’s start weight - but today, I broke the 200s. A lifetime of being obese, this is monumental for me! I converted my sleeve to bypass on 9/11, was 314 on surgery day. My high weight was 460. This journey is long and winding, take pleasure in every step of the way!

@@GSleeve822 I had bypass 18 months ago so I don't know if this is different for sleeve patients. Within a few weeks I could drink Water and by drinking I don't mean gulping. I can now drink a 16 oz. bottle in a few minutes but I had to learn not to gulp because even now that air in my tummy can be painful. I try to avoid getting a burp stuck. That makes me feel very uncomfortable. But yes, you will be able to drink water like a normal person.

I am pretty sure I said something on the 50 thread - but ya my doc was doing a new commercial - 4 of us - 2 banders and 2 bypass pple but you know what - we didn't say what kind of surgery we had 10/1 we filmed - like I said I haven't seen it yet - I have seen the one with the couple (bypass) but not mine - they are suppose to give us dvd of it - when I get it - if I do - I will upload it to facebook... Going to Vegas this weekend - to meet Peaches from Canada(she post sometime on the 50 thread) she's one of my lucky #7 girls - we met in Minn last summer when we did our mall of america trip - her & her gf me and mine - are going to have a girl's weekend.. -
Does Your Band Stop Your Hunger
Oregondaisy replied to IndioGirl55's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The sleeve does take away all the hunger. I am never hungry. I eat by the clock. I eat when I get up, I eat at 12 noon and I eat at 5pm or later if I am going to dinner with friends. I am really glad I got a revision to a sleeve. I always felt guilty with the band that I was doing something wrong. I could not tell if I needed a fill, or if I was supposed to be able to work with the fill I had. When that decision was taken away from me by my dr. because of vomiting in my sleep, I am glad the sleeve was available because it's been the very best I have felt in years. It's so easy to maintain without effort. -

Does Your Band Stop Your Hunger
Oregondaisy replied to IndioGirl55's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No with the sleeve food does not get stuck. You can eat anything you want, just not very much of it. You do get full pretty fast. I am kind of a grazer though. I get full pretty fast, but then maybe a couple hours later, I might have a healthy snack. There are some days I just don't feel like messing with food or cooking or dishes and I will have 3 Protein shakes per day and be perfectly satisfied. I didn't start having band problems until after I had the band for a couple of years. I could just see more problems coming, so I revised to the sleeve before that started happening. I am really glad I did. -

Hello everyone! I have been reading a lot about the difference between LAPBAND and Gastric Bypass procedures. There seems to be consistency regarding the statement that 40 - 50% of excess weight loss stays off after 2 years with LAPBAND. This confuses me. If one keeps the band on and continues the correct behavior and is consistent - shouldn't you be able to keep your initial loss and maintain (also continuing to monitor the band re: fills, etc.)? :rolleyes Basically it seems to say that if one loses 100 pounds, they can expect to regain 50-60 pounds.... but that seems very disconcerting. Am I missing something? :help: Thanks!

I think I might have had unrealistic expectations. My boss had bypass surgery last year and I remember seeing her a month out and she looked like a different person already. I think I pictured the same happening for me. I'm trying not to be discouraged and not forget that we started from very different places. I was 223 at my biggest, 214 before pre op diet, 206 on day of surgery. Today I am 185. Surgery was 12/3 so today is exactly 5 weeks post op. She was over 300. My doc tells me that people who start at a lower weight with a lower BMI ( mine was 38.4 at my biggest) will have a different journey, but when I come on here I see others who started from a similar place who have already lost way more than me. Anyone else feeling a little discouraged? Overall, I'm sooo glad I did it. Just need to find my patience with the marathon and stop expecting a sprint.

I can understand the frustration. My bmi was just under 40 when I had my band done. When I was revised to a sleeve 7 months ago, my bml was 36. In my 7 months, I have lost 45 pounds. I know my pace is slow but I know that it is permanent and not such a shock on my system. To keep motivated I come to the forums. I also take my picture and measurements so when I need that little extra kick, I look at them and see how far I have really come. Just remember that those who started heavier will get to our point too. Keep the faith. You and we are worth it.

I'm currently choosing between a homebirth and a birth center. Neither will accept high risk but they have no problem that I have the Lap Band. They have more concerns with bypass patients because of the history of malnutrition. As long as my pregnancy continues as normal my surgeon says I shouldn't have any worries about becoming high risk.

Someone Please Save Me From Junk Food!
Kygie replied to feliciadawn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
first thing remember you are human hunny......I always had a little something here or there for my cravings, would buy fat free ice cream or yoghurt...etc. I call it head hunger. It is not that your body is craving food, your brain is wanting comfort is something that is supposedly naughty...Take the naughtiness out and the guilt hunny by saying I can find something that is low fat, low sugar that will ease my cravings....For me this was a life change and a total change of what I eat, but I have taken the guilt out of my eating as it was sending me insane.....I have a little of things that I enjoy. With my first banding before the revision, I had gone from 209kg (459 pounds) to 149kg(327 pounds) in just over 13 months. I predominantly ate well and looked after Lola, but there were times that I had a little chocolate, a little ice cream or indulged in something I really wanted.....go gently hunny, think of what you would say to your best friend in the same position.....and then think that of yourself!! xoxo good luck -
So, anyways, as much as I hate to admit it, I was just dying over waiting on my insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, who I have through my husband's workplace. Well, all that is over now. Hurrah! I could hardly sleep over the fact that I spent 6 months going to Mayo out here, had a physcologist, worked out like crazy, etc. and it all would have been for not except for Blue Cross. Oh, I love them. And it wasn't that hard once I jumped through all the hoops at Mayo ( the craziness is, is that I did this for the bypass, and last month my surgeon said, "get the lap band" much less trama for your young body." ) And all these people said Blue Cross would never cover it, but they did! I guess they revised once in 2004, and then back again shorty after. Mayo wrote my letter, (and probably included the book's worth of info on me they collected in 6 months). After the secretary for my surgeon said they sent it to pre-authorization, I called them 2 days later and the gal there said,"I was very lucky to have Blue Cross/Shield, they are very good for approval and fast", they had it mailed, and exactly 12 days later ( including 4th of July) I and Mayo got the approval by mail. So anyways, for anyone out there like me, who was literally freakin' out, it was easy and painless with the insurance, the approval said "deemed medically necessary" . And also, Mayo in MN just started doing lap bands. Dr. Flo Que, she's great, and gets you in fast! Anyways, I didn't want to post this to gloat, just to let other worry-warts like me get some positive stuff, because I always loved the positive posts for insurance. Surgery 8-8-06

Length of time off of work?
colorado replied to Kurstin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took the full six weeks and needed every day of it - then I went back on a 4 day week - which really helped. Give yourself time! Its major surgery - just behind heart bypass. -
Hi just read you post. i was banded Feb 15, 2006 and am 39 years old. to date I have lost 30lbs and have had one fill. My pcp doctor told me that even if I only lose 30 to 50 lbs from the whole thing that is better than not losesing any at all. Everyone is different, my husband had his Dec 21, 2005. He was 314 and know is at 260. He has had one fill and is still loseing and does not plan to get another fil anytime soon. I reseached Lap band and Gastric bypass for 18 months before we decided. I know it is slow and I get depressed whrn the scales don't move but I will tell you like I tell everyone I meet. Go for it it is the best thing I could have done. remember it didn't take us sover night to put on the weight and it isn't coming off over night. Yoou will have to work at it but we both know it will be worth it. I know how you fill I have read the things people have posted. It is sometimes scary. Just have faith in yourself and your Doctor and you will be fine. Fosterc

Hi, I've been lurking for a few months while I was trying to decide which surgery to have. I am scheduled for Lap Band surgery on May 23rd. I have my pre-op and final visit with the surgeon this Friday. I've been reading posts from people who are having very little weight loss or very slow, hungry, eating what they used to, disappointed, etc. etc. This really scares me. Is this the norm? I am worried that I made the wrong decision. I am 58 and don't have time to make a big mistake like this and go in for a revision.:cry I"ve read all the 'statistics' but I could use the real scoop on what the typical person can expect. Please can someone help?

What does "up front" mean to you? I paid $10,000 before I had surgery, so I guess that's "up front." But I did not pay until the day prior to surgery...so I didn't send any money ahead of me. Sue Oh, yeah...the adjustments (fills and unfills) are nowhere near as big a hassle as trying to find a size 32 anything while on vacation in a foreign country. And they're WAY less hassle than having an "RnY revision" for a bowel obstruction.
