    No appetite

I have no desire for food or beverages at this time. I have 3 days left in my purée stage and I can only tolerate my Bcomplex vitamin for the day. Everything else just looks gross. Even the smell of food does not smell good to me anymore. Any ideas friends? Am I the only one?

    Pain after surgery?

Wow, that will be quite the savings for you. What you going to do with all that extra money??? LOL I was doing OMAD (one meal a day) and Keto for the last couple years without much luck. So I wasn't getting takeout very often. Except on Chinese Fridays. I bought a side of beef from a local farmer and filled up my freezer pre-op, so I should be set now for a good long time, protein wise. Grilled steak is still a struggle to eat. But cooked in the Instapot with beef broth and veggies (Swiss steak for example) works well for me. Along with roasts and lean hamburger in various dishes. Soups are still my friend so looking forward to cooler Fall weather. I allow an occasional carb. Potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, low carb tortillas but for the most part, meat and veggies are my mantra. Oh and low fat dairy. So yeah, I spent my food savings ahead of time on the moo cow >

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I'm 4 months post op and I really don't have any food aversions. Only immediately after surgery the next few days everything tasted awful - the protein shakes, the calcium chews and the chewable vitamins were torture. I believe it's the anesthesia. After that period, things were fine. I was sick of eating certain things because of repetition in the pureed stage and then soft foods stage, but not that it tasted bad. Since I started on modified regular foods, nothing so far has not been bad. I have not tried to even eat bread. It's my absolute favorite carb in every sense of the word, but I know it's not time for it just yet. Fried foods I also haven't tried to eat. Beer is actually ok with me. Takes me a little longer to make it through one - which is a good thing overall. But I can't really do seltzer or hard seltzer. It's way too bubbly. Took me an hour to get through half a can. I try to stay away from high sugar items and have tolerated a number of sugar free things with trial and error. I did have a regular sugary cocktail off the menu the other night at my friends birthday dinner and surprisingly tolerated it just fine. It just still takes me longer to drink it, which again is ok by me. This entire lifestyle is a matter of trial and error. We learn from our medical team, from one another on these forums and our own bodies.

    Black bean burgers

My dietician said baby food is for babies. It does not have the same nutritional content an adult needs. You can puree chicken breast by adding water or chicken broth to it. it actually isnt that bad. I added sugar free bbq sauce to add flavor. Also, just buy a can of no added sugar fruit like pears or peaches and puree them. I also pureed canned green beans and carrots. Everything tastes the same you just have to get over the consistency.
  5. Y'all, I know I cannot be the only one who is having severe food aversions. To stuff that I typically like! I'm 9 weeks post VSG. I brought some good turkey lunch meat, and some edamame with me for lunch. It got lunch time an I didn't really want it, but decided to eat is, as I didn't need to go out and try to hunt something down to eat. So I put a little chive cream cheese on my turkey and make a roll up and steamed my edamame (in the pods). I ate some turkey and a few edamame, and instantly started to gag. Anyone else? Or am I just a weirdo?

    Pain after surgery?

Ya, the extras you mentioned are expensive. The protein alone is pricey. I hoping to get my protein from food more than the protein supplements soon. It's just hard to make goal. I try to look at the expense of better food as an investment in myself and my family. But eating out IS way cheaper. I don't drink and my husband and I split a meal when we do go out...which isn't often anymore. Like you said though, TOTALLY worth it.

    Pain after surgery?

Funny as I was thinking that. It's not even just food, but more so drinks on my part, lol. My bill could easily be $150 one night out and now maybe $30 with leftovers to boot. I will say Uber Eats misses me. But then I turn around and the cost of protein shakes, vitamins, protein water etc does add up. Even better foods - hearts of palm pasta over standard carbs, extra lean beef, low carb cereals cost so much more. It kinda balances out and it's always worth it.

    Gastric bypass RNY 7/24/23

I’m down 13 pounds. It was 15, but somehow I’ve put on 2 pounds. I spoke to my surgeon and he said he didn’t want me to weigh myself at all because what’s happening now is not indivisible of the next few months. But I can’t not weight myself. I’m also stayed on the liquid diet as well through the purée stage. I’m now on soft foods. I had soft scrambled egg yesterday and it was fine. No issues. I’m so constipated though. And I worry maybe I’m retaining fluid. I was on a fluid pill for years before surgery. I feel like I need to go back on that or something. Idk. I’m a mess. but I’m glad to hear your doing well 🩷

    Regrets

thank you for your response. I’m an actually at a stall right now. Actually I’m two pounds up from a week ago. No idea how as I’ve followed instructions to a T. I can only guess it’s constipation. I’m so frustrated. I also miss food so much even though I’m not hungry. It’s such a mind f**k. I do talk to my mom. That helps. And I just started sessions with a new therapist. I’m religious and prayer helps too. I hope things get better soon.

    Gastric bypass RNY 7/24/23

I’m finding out that i no longer love food the way I use to anymore. I just flat out don’t enjoy it as much as I really use to. Kinda annoys me a lil bit. Maybe it’s because of the purée stage. Maybe it will get better during the soft food stage. At this point I’d rather go back to liquid tbh. Idk. Just my opinion. As for weight loss I’m doing ok and I enjoy exercising now. So far just walking. Compression on my tummy makes me feel better too because my tummy feels like jello or pudding lol I like to be out all together in my opinion. I’m down 25lbs post op. If I add the 2 week liver reduction diet weight loss a total of 34lbs. How about you?

    Unflavored protein powder

@Shanna NYC I actually will waste product. I’m sorry. If it gives me dog food vibes I can’t. Lol so far I like isopure. Thank god. I went thru at least 6 before finding one I like. Lol Pray for my wallet. Lol
  12. my surgery is scheduled for the 11th of September. I've been going through the full gambit of emotions. I thought that was supposed to happen after the surgery, haha. I have a supportive but not wanting to be included hubby. Like I told him things would be changing at the dinner table and now he's started cooking for the house, which has not been good for me in the pre-op stage as he's in love with the deep fryer. I've gotten him to start drinking more sugar-free stuff at home, which has brought his A1C down from a 14 to an 8.4 so his doctor was happy with that change. So he's at least interested in making some changes just not the drastic ones I'll be making for myself. The kids don't care what's on the table as long as it tastes good, and if they don't like it, they still eat it anyways and without complaint. That's the one thing I can say about my kids that I'm proud of, never complain about not liking the food but will tell you afterwards what they thought of it. Trying to make changes before I'm forced to make them. Just a lot. Wrapping my head around my eating issues and "head hunger" I'm getting better there. Still trying to quit doing the vape thing but not doing the best job and I'm afraid that I'm going to screw myself up not doing the right things at the right time. I'm afraid I'll mess up my progression I guess? I dunno.

    Regrets

Those first weeks are definitely hard. I was SOOO tired of liquid and puree and soft foods. But, it does get better. Especially as the weight comes off and health issues improve. The compliments are definitely confidence boosting. Things that can help are talking to someone about how you're feeling. It's a very emotional time right now. I cried a lot too and my therapist was a tremendous help walking through all the emotions I was feeling. Thank you for sharing.

    September surgery buddies!!

Congrats on all you have accomplished! You are doing amazing. I love food but I hate exercise which is why I needed the surgery to begin with lol. How much exercise is a lot to be able to eat that many calories? I think if you exercise the calories off then its about the same as not eating the calories to begin with. Maybe its healthier to do it that way? Exercise for me has not been sustainable and I'm just barely hanging on by doing 2 miles on the bike every day which only takes me 10 min. That's all I can motivate myself to do. Maybe that's the reality though. That to stay thinner we have to eat less than the average person or exercise more.

    September surgery buddies!!

I’m down 175 lbs since 9/12/22 and currently eat 1700-1900 calories a day. I’ll hit my surgeon’s goal in the next 1-2 weeks and I’m about 30 lbs from my personal goal. You can damage your metabolism staying at 800-1200 calories for life. I have adjusted very slowly first going to 1400, then 1500, 1600, and now I try for 1700 but do go as high as 1900. On vacation I ate 2500+, gained 3 lbs and lost 5 the week I got back. I am very concerned about disordered eating and a lifestyle that is sustainable long term. I do exercise quite a bit, mostly because I genuinely love food and want to be able to indulge in small ways without stalling my progress too much. It’s about balance.

    September surgery buddies!!

Thank you for your kind words! So you are ok mentally to stay at 800- 1000 calories forever? To me I get scared that that would not be a healthy number for anyone and that we are training ourselves into eating disorders. I find myself very close to being counted as having an eating disorder because of how much I count my calories and weigh my food etc. It's not officially an issue because we're under medical supervision but soon at the 1 year mark we are supposed to be mostly set free, at least I am. I go to every 6 months visits instead of 3 months with the dr. The line is blurry between what we do to to lose weight because we've had this surgery and we have lots of weight to lose and what is healthy long term. I was always under the impression that the goal was to eventually get back to eating a more normal amount of calories, but if we can't without gaining the weight back, what do you do? Is this the reason that so many surgeries fail? Its just scary to me no matter which way I look at it lol. I still am sooo happy to have lost this weight though and I would have the surgery again in a heartbeat. I just need to figure out this next step in the journey. I don't want to fail.

    No restriction!

That's really interesting about the restriction not being there until solid foods. It has reassured me. I am recommitting to the plan. Thank you all! X

Hi surgery twin. I am loosing weight so slow since surgery. My weight constantly fluctuates. I haven’t lost 20 since surgery so you are doing good. I also feel the food slide down sometimes. When this happens, I take smaller bites and chew more. I literally track everything. I’m going to try walking more also to see if that helps. I weight in weekly and It’s so defeating not to see the scale move.

    July 2023 buddies

3 week post op update- I'm down 8 lb since my surgery 7/20 I was hoping for more, but I gained about 9 lb during surgery and the day after from all of the IV fluids. To be fair, I've never lost more than a pound or so per week, so this is still really good. I would love to lose 20 lb a month, but I'm ok with a consistent 2 lb per week. I've been working with my nutritionist and weighing myself daily to track trends. It also helps me catch things quickly and readjust. I started eating ginger chews after surgery to help with nausea and realized I was going a little too ham on them! (That's how I got here in the first place) So even though there are natural fluctuations, daily weight and food tracking has been a powerful tool for my nutritionist and I.
  21. I was also worried about gaining too much weight. I’m 4 years post vsg and 8 months pregnant. I’ve only gained 7 pounds the entire pregnancy. Nausea, acid reflux, and food aversions played a role in that. Plus, eating smaller portions due to the sleeve. We’ll see how it goes after I have the baby because I’d love to lose about 20 pounds.

    Weight loss shots

Yes I used them to great success. I was 9 years out from sleeve. Originally lost 140 lbs over 2 years from sleeve but then gained and lost 60 and 40 lbs over and over again and after the last gain of 40 I just could not lose and found I had crept into pre diabetic range and my fasting insulin was very high. When insulin is high people are fat storing machines. I went on Ozempic and gradually increased the dosage. It got rid of the food “noise” cravings and I have lost 60 lbs in 9 months. I have stopped taking now (insurance will no longer pay and I want to try without anyway) and to maintain I am using a CGM via the Signos platform to keep glucose spikes low and also following “glucose goddess” books. I know I need to be constantly vigilant. I am commenting because there are a lot of negative experiences and usually people who had good ones stay quiet. Used properly these are livesaving medicines. While I am not on it I have no qualms if I had to stay on it for life. I take other meds that are maintenance meds and I see no difference with these. I feel that unfortunately a lot of stigma over obesity drugs where as none for arthritis, heart, cancer or other maintenance drugs.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I have developed a few food aversions since my surgery 18 months ago. On top of the list are fries and scrambled eggs. I can't seem to be able digest it anymore and it will sit like a stone in my stomach. Other aversions include deep fried in general and specially chicken (I'm not too worried about this haha), cucumbers with skin on (strange much) and pizza.
  24. Congratulations on doing so well. I had a bypass over 5 years ago & I still weight my food at home. I never go over 3.5 oz. I do 2 oz of protein & the rest in veggies or fruit. You have a great attitude & will do well.
  25. the inadvertent food twinning continues. i believe we really do all eat the same things at the same time...kinda like when your periods synch up with ur friends...😂😂😂 i don't always post what i eat, but do almost always take pictures of it.... @Tomo had shrimp shrimp cocktail, and i had this 3-4 days ago: @Starwarsandcupcakes's green beans and bacon vs. my green beans with pork mince 2 days ago and @Arabesque, i also had a pork bone soup but deleted the pic cuz it was unappetizing looking! lol too funny.
