Coping with grief after WLS
LouLouM replied to Starwarsandcupcakes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so very sorry for your loss, Star Wars & Cupcakes. I had gastric sleeve surgery on November 30th and very tragically lost my younger brother and only sibling on April 12th. The grief can be unbearable and I often feel so much anxiety that I want to crawl out of my skin. So I decided to join a running (for me, walk/run) group 5 Weeks to 5K training. I did it so that I could release some of this painful anxiety, sleep better, and be around a supportive group of people in beautiful nature (lucky me I get to run near the ocean and in redwood forests). I even got my 70 year old mom to join it with me! In addition to that I walk with both of my parents as much as I can. We are heartbroken, our lives changed forever so suddenly, and the exercise, nature, and supportive group of people has been very therapeutic. (((HUGS))) Star Wars & Cupcakes, and thanks for starting this thread for other people to refer to in the future. -

13 years later and - I Love my band
2muchfun replied to TakinThePlunge's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Banded in November 2011. Still lovin it. I wouldn't go for the entire/partial stomach removal methods. It was the band or nothing. But, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I think there are those of us who just needed that extra push to eat less and the band did that for me. -
I'm having my gastric bypass surgery on June 4th. I currently watch my daughter's children ages 11 9 and 3. I told my daughter when I started this journey, that after my surgery, I wouldn't be able to babysit for quite some time. My thought process behind that was that I would need time to get acclimated to my new normal. So I wouldn't have to worry about cooking meals, or having foods in the house that I shouldn't have. It's bad enough, that I'm going to have them during my two week liquid pre-op diet. I thought this was all ironed out, but today she said to me that the baby was going to be in daycare and possibly the 9-year-old, but the 11-year-old would be staying with me in case I needed help. I love my grandchildren, but this really concerns me. I feel that it'll be more stressful than helpful and I'm really stressed out about telling her again that that's not a good idea. Any input that you can give me would be amazing! I've come too far to let anyone sabotage my journey. Sent from my moto g stylus (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

I had high sugars the first three weeks PO and then my sugar dropped to 105 and then under 100 there after - consistently. I stopped checking about 3 weeks ago. I'm 8 weeks PO (gastric bypass). My doctor explained it to me as my body adjusting and healing. I was worried at first but they were correct. My sugars dropped and I'm feeling great. Give yourself a little time, I understand it is hard not to be concerned though, because it's a lingering concern from before and something we were always told to watch. They took me off all medicine immediately after surgery and I haven't had to take anything other than my thyroid and multivitamin.

Like other bypass patients, I went from watery stools post-surgery to constipation. One thing that helps prevent constipation is taking a daily high quality probiotic (look for something with at least 5 billion CFU and multiple probiotic strains). When I routinely take one, I don't get constipated. Then I ran out and went a few days without taking it and I was backed up like a Friday afternoon freeway after a car accident.

Surgery midweek-eek and yay-big change at older age
Whats Next posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgery is coming fast, it was moved up via a cancellation to next week, eek! I’m a combo of fear of the unknown, and calmness of giving it up to the professionals to care for me. I’m over 60 and really never considered I could stop the diet cycle by having WLS. A family member had it, and was happy they did it, this and knowing a few WLS veterans happy with their surgery, spurred me on to do gastric bypass. They had a good recovery with no issues. I’m hoping for a great outcome and that it resolves my Gerd and sleep apnea in time as well. I fear pain, hair loss, complications, how I’ll feel about all that skin, regrets. I look forward to many positive body changes, more energy, onederland, not being obese, cuter clothes 😀 I appreciate everyone sharing here! I’ve learned a lot. -
TMI question 🙋♀️

I have only had watery bm and that started about day 3 post op. I know I'm not bypass, but I was basically told the same thing by my surgeon. And I took Colace on day 3 to get any movement at all by that night. Since I'm still on all liquids, I *assume* I'm not doing a solid bm and it's basically water because of that. -
I'm super excited! Also super nervous. I've worked hard to get here and I'm really looking forward to the next leg of my journey. My pre-op appointments are on May 20th, I have a group pre-op counseling session on the 23rd, and a covid test on the June 4th right before my surgery. I'm more than ready to take my life back. D day today. In and hour my sister is picking me up to get the bypass done. This is all very real now. One small step for the surgeon. One giant leap for me. See you on the other side.

You will know very soon what full feels like after the bypass, once you get to solid foods. I had 3 ounces of sliced beef for lunch and I had to stop at 2 ounces. It always feels like my chest and/or stomach will explode if I continue. If I don't stop, i.e. I ignore the pressure... I would then get the foamies or a terrible runny nose and congestion. Anyone Struggle Watching Your Family Eat?
Tami10 replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 5 months out after gastric bypass and I have been doing pretty good. Overall my family eats what I do unless it's a take out night but the sides are different I usually make a side like rice or potatoes or noodles that I don't eat but the rest I can. I was a big sweet eater before surgery so I thought that would be a problem if I brought any of that in the house for the rest of my family. But Christmas came and I couldn't take the candy in stakings and desert after dinner from them. So we had it and I was so worried before but when it came time I found that it wasn't so bad and as time came I got a cake or something fir desert fir them had no issues. The only problem I had was when my husband brought how cookie like a bunch of them and I made him take them to his office and put them away so I couldn't see them. Otherwise it's been fine Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Large Hiatal hernia: Bypass or Sleeve
Nikki_B_ replied to Mariann812's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had sleeve and hernia repair in 2017. I just had revision to bypass and hernia repair again. I no longer have gerd. I went to a different surgeon this time and my surgery was kinda major bc my whole sleeve was in my chest. I guess my stomach was growing in my chest and had fat and stuff around it. But I’m all fixed up now and I’m feeling so much better. Better surgeon and no more hernia and no more GERD. Good luck with your surgery. -
I had the sleeve and now revision to bypass and 3 wks PO. It is so different then the sleeve I’m trying to figure out if I’m full or ate or drank too fast idk.
-
I believe the average weight loss for bypass is 65% & sleeve is 60% of the weight you were to lose at the 3year mark. Which is a pretty negligible difference. Bypassers tend to lose more quickly at the beginning but that is no guarantee of how fast you will lose at first as we all lose at our own rate & everyone’s rate of loss slows as you get closer to your goal. You can have a bypass & still be a slow loser & vice versa. My surgeon went through each surgery, pros & cons, but recommended the sleeve based upon my weight loss & gain history, my basic diet & eating habits, & general health which is where I was leaning anyway. You’ll lose weight regardless of the surgery you chose if you work the program. I exceeded my goal with a sleeve but there are factors beyond your control, like genetics, which play a big part in where you’ll end up. Like you will lose more & faster simply because of your gender.

Dr Sanborn - Chattanooga TN
Weightloss55 replied to Weightloss55's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi everyone. Hope you all are doing well! I complete my post op next month and hope to get insurance approval and survey date. There is a lot of turnover at Dr. Sanborn’s office so having difficulty getting responses and calls returned from my coordinator. Any suggestions? Oh - I decided to have a bypass as it will allow me to loose the most weight and I’ve been feeling some reflux. Thanks again! -
It’s really just a personal decision if there is not a glaring medical reason to choose one over the other. I am on medications and worried about absorption issues of bypass affecting them so I went with sleeve but I knew that I was possibly going to lose a few less pounds than I would with bypass. I think from my research the difference in weight loss between the two surgeries was only like 5-10% of excess weight which for me ended up being just a few pounds but I was lower BMI to start. If you eat a lot of sweets however the bypass could be even better for loss because you may dump on sugar which will help you stay away from them. But not everyone dumps from sugar so that’s not guaranteed.

im sorry to hear about your father.... I have been focused on the sleeve for months. I just need a significant weight-loss.. That is the only reason I have been thinking of changing to bypass.

Can't Decide!
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Veritas34's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I started my wls journey years ago, I went with the Lap Band, for a few reasons, but I feared Bypass because I thought it was too invasive and too permanent. Fast forward 7 years and I developed GERD and had my Band removed. Now I'm revising to Bypass due to GERD complications. After recently doing research on the Bypass for revision, I watched a YouTube video, and realized that my fear of Bypass was due to Lap Band marketing. So what I will say is, if you start out with Sleeve and have to be revised due to complications or other reasons, you might be "forced" into Bypass the same way I was. Now, no one knows what path their weight loss surgery journey takes us, but it's a theoretical "what if." I never thought I would end up with Bypass. But now I have no other options as far as weight loss and fixing GERD goes. And I've realized I probably could've made a better choice than Lap Band 9 years ago. When you actually research Bypass thoroughly, you'll find that although your disgestive tract is rerouted, it's reversible just like the Lap Band. Sleeve is revisable but not reversible. This video is quite informative and at around the 15 minute mark it discusses the marketing tactic that Lap Band used against Bypass. Best wishes on your journey! -
Have you talked to your Dr about your fears? I know there is a tool the Drs can use that will show which the pros and cons of each procedure and even compare them for you. My Dr did that and turns out the sleeve is best for me. I told the Dr I was willing to do either procedure but that bypass scared me as it ultimately was the root cause of my father's death. (I don't want to scare anyone ..he won the unlucky lottery and got a internal hernia which is very very rare and even rarer to die from) When looking at the comparison tool the sleeve and bypass were identical in results for me with only a few lbs difference.

Thanks for the quick responses... 1. I dont know why im nervous about the bypass I think im just nervous in general and psyching myself out... 2. I dont have GERD of any acid reflux 3. My doctor was okay with either choice... He stated that for a bigger weight loss they used to always recommend bypass but sleeves are getting similar results....
