We haven't been brave enough to try yet, but we will be doing condoms... it's what we've always done when we weren't 'trying'. The doctor wants us to do a backup form of BC too though... like spermicide or something. I don't know about all of that.

Same as apple203.... but told me to bring the accessories (tube, mask etc) and they’d have the base machine. They didn’t have one but I was asked why I wasn’t using my cpap about 20 Times over the two nights stay bc I was having a hard time breathing while sleeping. (They monitor your vitals obviously through the wires etc) Long story short—. Bring yours! What you should know about WLS they don't tell you
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to BlondePatriotInCDA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's where I feel a lot in of my weakness - my hands and I turn 60 Thursday! Its my arms and hands (duh! They're dependent on each other 😆). That's what I was referring to in my OP... I have a hard time opening things I never had issues with before surgery. I shouldn't think its age related when I had no issues 9 months ago BS (before surgery), I opened things my husband had issues with sometimes - though if you were to ask him..he "loosened it for me!" -
Taking off my fat suit
chrisredjeep replied to madferitchick's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Very well done on making that 50lbs! That's just brilliant. You must be so pleased with that result. I go to see the consultant today ( changed appointment from Tuesday) and I will be proud to tell him that since the Monday before my op I have lost 28lb. Its 4 weeks today since the op and I cant believe how well I feel. Think the personal trainer is a great idea. When I have lost 50lb I might look into that one. I wear a fit band and I am manly doing 12ooo plus steps a day now. Poor dog is getting fed up. I will have to get some Biotin did you get it online or Boots. Im still quite low on the calories but I will be asking Surgeon today about increasing. I use the app my fitness pal to track all I eat and it sychs with the fit bit so that's good. Keep up the good work you are doing so well! Chris -
What to eat from Chinese reataurant?
Sweet Pee replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Food and Nutrition
I very rarely eat meat. If I choose to eat meat, it has to be organic, and grass fed. I obtain my most protein from green vegetables. I can eat a plate full of raw leafy veggies, but if I eat a piece of meat, I am full and I can not get enough vital nutrients my body needs from green vegetables. I do not recommend this for everyone, but it works for me. My blood/lab stats show this is the right way for me. Mmmmmm, just reading the ingredients of the Moo Goo Gai Pan is making my mouth water!!! Sounds like a dinner date, or some good take out food for today for me and hubby. -
5 year post gastric bypass weight gain
lizonaplane replied to NuOutlook's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
You look great, but I am sure you definitely want to take off that regain! I have heard those "reset" liquid diets are a bunch of bs - really the reason for the liquid diet right after surgery is to protect the staples/sutures and the new stomach, not to lose weight faster. Instead, I would focus on the basics: protein and veggies, and water and I know for me, I only have ever lost weight when I kept track of calories/macros. (I haven't had surgery yet, but I plan to track after surgery too). We're here for you! You can do it! -
Ungrateful gift getters'

yeah we have agreed that starting next year we are no longer buying into the materialistic nonsense of xmas anymore-this yr just finally did it for us-when you spend over $5000 at a holiday then something is seriously wrong in the scheme of things to us and this was it this year-next yr its going to be no more that $100 TOTAL-we need to get back to the basics of xmas-im so over this materialistic end of it.Tell your MIL to volunteer at the local soup kitchen for xmas then maybe she will reevaluate her selfcentered bs. -
Funny you should say that... Dr. Powell is the doctor I've mentioned a few times who takes BC/BS but won't take new BC/BS patients. However, a few minutes before reading this post, I did call again and speak with Myra. I explained the situation again, and mentioned that the Surgery Center of Richardson had spoken with Dr. Powell directly and that he told them to have me call the office. So she's going to try to get in touch with him, though it will probably be Monday before I hear anything now. At least there's hope... Jonathan

I went for my fill today -- the first under flouro. My band has slipped. Most of my stomach is sitting on top of the band. This explains why I don't have restriction, why I've gained weight, and why I have reflux. The techs who read the flouroscopy said that they think the band my doctor used was too small to begin with, and that I may need a new (VG) band, as opposed to fixing the placement of the one I have. Surgery will be $4500 + doctor's fees. A new band will be $4000 on top of that. I can't afford this. I couldn't afford the $16,000 I paid for surgery the first time. I can't believe it's 10 months later, I've only lost 40 lbs, and I have to go through this all again, at this cost. The really frustrating thing is that it's possible that my insurance company now will pay for "diagnostic surgery" which would cover the costs of the surgery to fix the placement. (Nobody can tell me what would happen in that circumstance if they found I need a new band.) However, this seems to be a moot point, as no doctor I can find will accept my insurance company. For some reason, everyone is swearing off BC/BS. Even doctors that take BC/BS aren't taking new BC/BS patients. In the mean time, I have to go the next 7 days on liquids only, even though they said that the band is too small for the stomach to fix itself. 7 days of liquids, with no restriction, over Thanksgiving. I want to crawl into a hole.

Dear Jonathan I am just recently back on the boards & have now seen your post. Hopefully your band has now slipped back into place & your Christmas miracle has come early. If not have you tried Dr.Pleatman here in Michigan?? The office manager is KAren or Joe(a Lady) They are both helpful. They do exept BC/BS & he is sometimes also on the boards here. I attached his website & hope your situation straightens itself out soon. I am truely sorry your going through all of this. head up:0) http://www.laparoscopy.com/pleatman/index.htm

Yeah. I saw doctor 12/3 for consult and decided to do self pay.. I wasn't ready to wait ANY longer for ins company BS. I had surgery 5 weeks after I met with him. After Christmas I just wanted to get it done.. to start my new life. It helps if you are mentally ready for the changes in your life. My last thought before being wheeled in was.. ok... they can't undo this.. are you REALLY SURE??? haha.. I was! -
I changed jobs shortly after my wife had her surgery so we now have a different insurance company...BC/BS of Alabama. My wife tells me there have been a lot of horror stories on here about BC/BS. Does anyone have any info advice on getting approved with them? My boss had gastric bypass with them and I plan to talk with him more tomorrow about this.

Whats the biggest weight loss myth you have ever heard?
Jachut replied to She Smiles's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm no high Protein advocate as you all know. I say it often enough. But I do wholeheartedly believe that the whole high carb/low fat food pyramid that we were fed all through the 80's and 90's is a crock. Its a big reason why the population has just got fatter and fatter. Drinking a glass of Water with lemon juice in the morning will kickstart your metabolism- ah, bulldust. I also think Atkins philosophy is ridiculous - all you want of steak, cheese, eggs? May as well just shove it all down your aorta, that's where its going to end up anyway. Eat anything you want in moderation DOES work for me, but my idea of moderation when I was fat was slightly dysfunctional, lol. -
thank you so much! i have bc also and i was just told they dont like covering the lapband, they would rather cover the bypass beacuse they dont want to pay for the fills, have u ever heard of that,i dont want the bypass i want the band!

You can always appeal based on your co-morbidities... Write out a detailed history of your work with weight watchers and those other supervised programs - find any old documentation - a canceled check, or anything. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are dangerous stuff. You can just tell them that if you croak before the 12 mos is up, your relatives will sue the *&*p out of them and win. I hate BC/BS too. We know what BS stands for, right? Anyway, If you really do HAVE a history of supervised weight loss attempts and a history of being morbidly obese, you can fight them. Check out the sticky thread in the insurance section - there are some research studies there that you can quote in your appeal.

I'd guess that your entire dating landscape will change. By that I mean you are going to change, your confidence will change, your tolerance for BS with change, you will find a voice you didn't know you had. In other words, you may want to begin to ask yourself, not who will like me, but who will deserve me. Just my .02

Birth Control Options after VSG
sillykitty replied to amanda-xo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on and off Depo for years. My favorite bc, EVER. But I got scared off because of the effects on calcium and bone density. https://nwhn.org/depo-provera-and-bone-mineral-density/ Also when I went off depo after 3 years, it took me over a year to get my period back. I didn't like that the hormones had built up in my body for that long. Also if I had wanted to become pregnant during that time.it wouldn't have been possible. I got the Mirena IUD just prior to my WLS. I agree, it hurt like a b*tch, and I have irregular spotting both light and heavy since. But I like that is is the most effective form of bc, and I don't need to remember to take a pill, or go get a shot, etc. -
Birth Control Options after VSG
amanda-xo replied to amanda-xo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@TexasMommy80 yeah I am the same way. but what about right away following the surgey, my doctor said I would be very fertile and should consider going on some type of bc. He said it wouldn't be very wise to get pregnant for at least 1 & 1/2 years after the surgery date. -
I was told never again can I have carbonated drinks,bc it swells the stomach and the air that gets trapped in the stomach makes you feel real bad, also the sugar content is real high so you could get a sugar high then low, also not good... Although I was told by someone at a support group I attended that she bought these drops that you add to your Water and it tastes like fanta orange or grape, said she bought them at walmart in the section that has all those water enhancers. Might could try those... Oh and my dietician said I could take a coke zero (no sugar) and shake the carbonation out and have like a half cup, but to do that rarely because it might tempt you to have it with carbonation.

Are you following a Paleo Diet?
drmeow replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
One of the best purchases I've made to help in eating well is a food Saver. I love wild-caught salmon but it's quite expensive here. My local grocery store, however, has a very good sale on it about every 3 months. I buy a lot then and package it in small portions, vacuum seal and freeze it. I have completely quit eating any farm-raised fish, as they are usually fed a corn-based diet and probably medicated as well. I live near the Chesapeake Bay, source of great seafood, but I am not convinced the Bay is all that clean anymore, despite the extra surcharge that goes on my sewer bill every month for that! So, while I love shrimp and clams, I eat them less frequently - they are bottom feeders so who knows what they are picking up. -
I chose to keep my surgery to myself because I knew it would bother me when people said that I took the easy way out. I also know that bariatric surgery has a stigma attached to it and I wasn't willing to deal with that. A lady I worked with had a surgery and everyone knew about it. When she lost weight all anyone said was well, she has lapband so it's not like she's working hard and when she gained it all back, everyone was all smug about how her cheaterhead surgery failed. That irked me and it contributed to my decision to keep it to myself. My three best friends know and no one else does. I am now 2.5 years post-op so my weight loss really isn't a topic of conversation anymore. When people asked what I did I just said I worked out more and ate less, which was entirely true. I like the idea that lies by exclusion are not lies. I don't feel that I have any personal obligation to other large people to tell my story- it's my business, not theirs, and I plan to keep it that way. My boyfriend, now ex-boyfriend, once said something like...it's almost like you had that stomach surgery. I was thin! I also have major plastic surgery scars that someone who sees me naked and isn't stupid can conclude that I had been larger at least at some point. The big contributor is the fact that food makes me puke, so when I'm dating I either can't eat half the places we go or I do eat and then barf. All I said to him was...I thought that surgery wasn't supposed to make you barf? And he was like, ohhh yeah, you're right. End of story. My mom said once..."did you have your stomach cut out?" and my response was, "what?, why would I do that?. Again, end of story. I am fine lying to protect my privacy because in the end it is about number one, and this number one did not want to deal with the bs people like to throw at those who have had this surgery. I am ok with that, and in the event anyone finds out I lied to them, I frankly don't care.

When I went through my psych eval the doc and i talked about this. She wanted me to know that the divorce rate is significantly higher for WLS patients. Clearly, several things can happen. Either the person loses weight and realizes they have been settling for a person or lifestyle just bc they are fat...and they want something more... or... the WLS patients partner cannot handle the added attention the patient is now getting...and this leads to fights, and so on. I work at a hospital facility where loads of people are having surgery...bc our insurance covers it 100%. I have seen my divorced coworker go from a homebody to a drinking "sexual" person (saying it nice). She has replaced one addiction when several unhealthy ones. the point of all my blabbering is yes...it can change a person. It is life changing surgery. But, it doesnt have to change a person. I, like you, have always thought pretty highly of myself, considered myself kinda sexy at times  etc. My boyfriend and I talked pretty openly about his fear that I may "get hotter" and leave him. I explained that I am with him bc I love him...(I will spare you all the details). But, I just try to let him know that I am not with him bc I am fat...hahah...that doesnt even really make sense. So just talk to him. Reassure him. Put it in perspective for him. Ask him "would you leave me if you were fat and lost weight"? His answer will be no. And then you can say..."then why would I leave you"? Just some thoughts! Good luck with everything! Amy
