Surgery is around the corner
Arabesque replied to jesdona's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’d think you’d still have plenty of time. While you may lose more quickly at the beginning after a bypass, it slows just like with a sleeve. The stats around average weight loss at about three years for sleeve & bypass are both about 65% of the weight they had to lose. (You’re really just talking about a few pounds of difference.) Just like there are people who don’t meet their goals with a sleeve there are people who don’t with bypass. Same with meeting their goals or exceeding. The amount of weight you lose is highly dependent upon where your basal metabolic rate resets as a result of the surgery. This is the weight your body is happy & settles at. Before surgery I could diet to 60kg but every time I would bounce back to 75kg & would sit there - that was where my base rate sat (until menopause began & it became 91kg). Then there are factors like age, gender, general health, medications, lifestyle, & the effort & breadth of changes you are willing to make & maintain to how & what you eat & activity you do. Probably best to sit down with your surgeon & have a conversation as to what they advise based on their experiences & those of their patients & your needs & situation. All the best which ever surgery you chose. -
I have a surgery date October 4th this year.. I'm getting gastric sleeve but lately I have been feeling like I should get the bypass. Im Affraid I won't loose enough weight with the sleeve. I have been talking to a few friends and I have gotten different opinions.Has anyone ever changed there mind this late. What are your thoughts on bypass instead of sleeve? Weight loss after revision
Tomo replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I don't believe it would be a waste of money if you go to a good surgeon. I wish I did my revision sooner or skip the sleeve all together because I got gerd from it. The revision was the best thing I have ever done and worth every penny. The sleeve was good at restriction but the rny, at least to me, is another animal altogether. I don't dump at all (once early on) but I get full so fast. Although I had my revision for uncontrolled gerd purposes, I lost over 90 lbs. in less than a year. I could never get below 160 lbs with the sleeve (which was fine at the time) but here I sit at 114 lbs. No gerd, no side effects, I feel great physically. I have been transitioning to get to maintenance the last 3 months. -

I had the band in 2014 and like you lost in the beginning, almost achieving my goal. About 2017, I started having reflux issues and had the band completely deflated in 2018. End result I gained all the weight back because I couldn’t get the band filled and insurance would not pay for a second WLS. After almost 2 years I’m one week out from bypass as that’s what the surgeon recommended. -

Aetna, BCBS or United Healthcare???
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to AmandaD.'s topic in Insurance & Financing
My surgeon is one of 4 doctors that jointly own their practice. And he has privileges at one of the better hospitals here and my surgery was done there. I chose the sleeve because I have pills that can't be broken and that have no alternatives (my MS meds) and you can't take pills with the bypass. Also, the complication rate for sleeve is way lower than with bypass. Lastly, the types of BCBS you can get also differ. The ones provided to state employees seems to require more testing than BCBS through a regular employer. At least, that's what I've noticed. -
Anyone had surgery in Jacksonville, FL??
AmandaD. posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hello! I’ll be having the bypass surgery next year but I haven’t chosen a surgeon/specialist yet. Wanted to see if anyone had their surgery done in the Jacksonville, FL area and with who/experience… Thank you! -
This is my hold up at the moment for my revision. The first time around I seen one in office and now they don’t have him and told me to go and find one. I seen someone here also had a therapist, so I’m going to contact my doctor tomorrow to see if they would be okay with her helping out. Good luck everyone! We will get through this just fine!

Oh and I am getting a sleeve.. I know too many people with issues with bypass that sent them to the hospital over and over again It isn’t for me! (But everyone should do what’s good for them) my surgeon fixed hiatal hernia with sleeve which brings the gerd rate down to about 10% of patients .. I am a bit freaked about the endoscopy (and surgery!) but know it’s the right thing

4 years post VSG and still not hungry
Saxons replied to Saxons's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know right? I thought it only happened to gastric bypass patients. My surgeon has explained that, although I still have a stomach (albeit a tiny one), I can still have rapid stomach motility. And the suspects are high level sugars (explains the muffin), and high protein without carbohydrates added. And not chewing my food thoroughly, so my stomach doesn't dump a whole chunk of protein at once. I try to follow all the directions, but after 4 years, you slip up now and then! I had blood tests done 2 weeks ago and they were perfect. Its just that the dumping, combined with the dry retching is miserable. I wish I had known... -
Thank you so much for that information! How do you figure out plan exclusions? I work for a large bank and in their little healthcare “breakdown” it shows Bariatric surgery is covered (in-network with “distinguished centers”) covering 80% after co pay/out of pocket max. With that I am assuming that because the “brochure” states it’s covered that means that all three options my job provides for medical insurance will cover it. My job only lists very minimum criteria (must have BMI over 35, dietician, Psych, etc.) nothing specific, no exclusions listed. I would love to figure all of this stuff out BEFORE I pick an insurance company/plan, but when I call my jobs HR they tell me I have to contact the specific insurance company and tell them the plan & when I call the insurance companies they state the need a “group number” from my job and cannot give me any information until they have it. I can’t even look for specialists/surgeons because no one will even tell me who’s in network. It all just seems crazy to me that no one can tell me ANYTHING.. I feel lost and stumped as to where to look next… do I wait for open enrollment and HOPE that there may be an HR rep that can give me more info or do I have to blindly pick an insurance to go with and hope that their criteria/exclusions aren’t too crazy? Or would it be the same criteria/exclusions across the board because that’s what my job puts into place? I probably sound crazy but I just don’t seem to understand the whole process. It seems like my job, the insurance company AND my specialist/surgeon will all have their own criteria to go by… I just wish I could get all that information (or atleast some of it) before hand… thank you for listening and anymore insight would be much appreciated! Congrats with almost being done with your pre op journey!! That must be so exciting!!!! Are you getting the sleeve or bypass? I’ll be doing the bypass because I have GERD. I’m terrified of the endoscopy ( I hateeee needles) the best of luck on your continued journey!!!

Bariatric friendly pain relievers
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not sure if you can use these with your job or not, but I use CBD oil and topical CBD products, lidocaine cream and tylenol. I really haven't had to use anything like this since my revision, except last week, I got blinded by the sun and missed a step and banged my knee on the concrete walkway, and I was three weeks post op revision at that point and started back at the gym the day before so I was a bit sore, then the fall on top of all of that... the CBD oil took the edge off of the pain. It's supposed to be really good for muscle recovery anyway. Maybe try one of those donut pillows that you sit on? I hope you feel better soon! -
Hey! I was a tried and true user of ibuprofen before I got my surgery but now that I'm bypassed, it's a no go. I take tylenol as recommended by my doctor for my period cramps and injuries now. I went camping this weekend and hurt my tailbone hiking (took a slip and fell on my booty). Now I have a pretty sore tailbone, it hurts to transition from sitting to standing and hurts to bend down and back up. I have broken my tail bone before so I know it's not broken, just a bad sprain or bruise but man it HURTS! Tylenol is not doing anything for me and I really don't want to take oxy leftover from my surgery because it's a terrible drug, it makes me constipated and makes me fall asleep. Are there any drugs you take with your bypass that actually relieve pain and don't make you tired/high? Thanks!

Welcome and I am having surgery the same day I'm having the bypass though. Do you have a liquid diet phase? I have to do 2 weeks and I start it on sept 5. Do you know if they weigh you before you start the liquid diet? If not then you should be ok because you are expected to lose weight on the liquid diet. So if you are below the insurance weight on the date of surgery, they should just blame the liquid diet. At least that's my hope and understanding since I'm in the same situation I think its great that you are being so successful even before the surgery, hopefully after the surgery your weight loss will continue to be amazing. -
Lordy, yes! I remember eating the potted deviled ham when I was a kid. 😂 After my VSG, during my puréed stage, I made a lot of tuna salad (just tuna and mayo with a little dill pickle juice) in my food processor. I’d whip that stuff up and put it in little 2 oz cups and keep them in my fridge. I really liked the Starkist Hickory Smoke tuna in the pouch and I would use that most of the time. I liked having some guacamole with a little salt, too. I watched a lot of YouTube videos by this lady who was very creative with the puréed stage food. If you want to get some ideas, watch TimeToShrink videos. I plan to use a lot of my old “recipes” after my revision to RNY.

What are you revising from? You may be right about the revision. I know my doctor told me that he would not do my lap-band removal and revision to sleeve in one operation because its more traumatic to the body. And had a greater percentage of some kind of complication or another. Including when healing. He said it can be done and many successfully do it, including himself when medically necessary, its just that he doesn’t like doing it. So I had to wait almost ten weeks in between. I feel like revisions are the least spoken about of all these surgeries. We speak of each as if they are individual and never of what it means to put them together in one body.

Rate of loss post-op
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Jesse Liberty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So were you 5 ft 2 in and started off at around 200 pounds? Then you lost a final total of 88 pounds and are now sitting at roughly 112 pounds (when your goal weight was 132)??? That's actually amazing weight loss!!! For me, my ideal weight is between 145-155. I'm honestly not getting anywhere near that, and I'm ok with it. My goal is 200 pounds, but secretly I actually want to get to 185 if possible. My surgeon went over the stats and averages and explained that the sleeve usually produces less weight loss that the bypass, but I wasn't willing to do the bypass because I have pills I HAVE to take and I knew that wasn't allowed with the bypass. -

It is different because of the types of surgery and because I am getting mine done at Mayo most of it comes from research. I know I almost cried reading that "soft food stage/phase 3" is 6 weeks! I am getting a revision done..maybe longer recovery? -
I was approved for surgery, much sooner than expected
AgentCherryZero posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm new here. I joined this forum with the expectation that my surgery was going to be about 10 months from now. I went to the surgeon today and I'm looking at two to three months from now. Which yay?!? I don't have to think about the what if's as long, but now I'm overly anxious about "holy crap, it's so soon I don't have time to prepare". I'm having the bypass which is what I went into the appointment expecting him to say I would need. I'm just nervous and jumping in head first reading all the posts. Thanks for sharing your stories, I didn't want to read them while being a creeper and not sharing mine. -

My RNY experience
15 years post-op replied to 15 years post-op's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was extremely fortunate to not have any complications. I can still remember my mother having a gastric bypass in the mid-1970s. She had a number of problems, but GBS was a relatively new procedure. It’s improved drastically since then. -

joanie pony replied to Jesse Liberty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
this is all so very interesting! i appreciate all the comments on this thread. I am one month post-op from bypass. I lost about 7 lbs my first week, and nothing since. However my clothes are fitting much better. I had lost 40 lbs prior to surgery, plus 15 lbs on my pre-op diet. So these explanations really are making sense to me now. Thank you! -
