VSG to RNY - First time diagnosed with GERD. Two years post op!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to PepperCat's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How is everything going? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away. -

Hi Amanda! My name is Nancy, and I'm new here, too. I'm in West Central Wisconsin. I just had my first meeting with my surgical team coordinator. As far as a date for my bypass, all I know is it will be in October. Definitely excited to be on this weight loss journey with this fantastic group of people! -

I’m so sorry your insurance denied your surgery. If your doctor will submit for a hiatal hernia repair then I’m sure you would be approved. That’s what mine did and I found out yesterday that I’m approved for the repair. I do, however, have to pay out of pocket for the bypass portion. I’m not sure how large my hernia is but I think your insurance should approve you regardless of the size. Talk to the surgery scheduler at your doctors office on Monday and see if she can submit for the hernia repair. My out of pocket for the bypass was $2600 which we went ahead and paid. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and hope you’ll get your approval!! Keep us posted! 💕 -
I had a bypass a year ago and I swallow 5 pills (3 are pretty large supplements) all together at the same time every morning.

Just Home and Feel Low

I had consults for almost a year before surgery and my surgeon told me as long as they weren't extended release tablets, then I could have them after bypass. Medications were high on my list on concerns since I have asthma and a mental health condition that I wasn't willing to mess around with. I've found there is so much variability among bariatric surgeons with meds, diets, etc. that it's so hard to compare experiences, but yeah, they were giving me pills at the hospital pre-op day 1. -
It’s most likely gas from the bypass surgery. My wife had same thing it subsides in few days. But to be sure you might call your providers office and just ask.

I had my bypass several years ago and take pills. The only thing you can't take are extended release pills, but there are usually substitutes for those. although I don't know about pills for MS, specifically. -

I chose the sleeve over the bypass because I was told by my surgeon that you can't have pills with the bypass. I have meds for MS which can't be substituted, crushed, melted, or broken open. They must be taken as-is. I could have taken liquid or gummy vitamins, so I wasn't worried about that. But my MS meds are non-negotiable, so that pushed me to a sleeve and not the bypass. You mean to say I could have taken my pills, even if it took all day, with a bypass????? -
Steroids Before Bypass Surgery
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to RosesForDays63's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Once upon a time, I was on long term, moderate to high dose, daily steroid therapy. I even had to have an open surgery while taking moderate doses of steroids. I will spare everyone the long, drawn out details, lol. But if you plan on being down to 5 mg, you shouldn't have these issues. I haven't been on steroids for years, but prior to deciding on revision to bypass, I was on Celebrex for years. When I decided to move forward with revision, I stopped Celebrex and gave myself several months to make sure I could function without them, because I knew I would have to stop them since they're a very strong NSAID. And I agree with the others, this is something you need to have a very, very detailed discussion with your surgeon about, and do it as soon as possible and don't wait until the day of surgery. But my question to you is, after your bypass surgery, will you continue steroid therapy or is your doctor planning to wean you off of them for good? They're know to cause ulcers post gastric bypass, along with inhibiting weight loss, and my surgeon said absolutely no oral NSAIDs after surgery, so if I ever do need them it will have to be very infrequently and by injection only. Best wishes! -
My team didn't suggest it one way or another, but when my sister had her surgery (gastric bypass), she swore it was a life saver. I asked a nurse when I was in the hospital if I could wear one and she was more than happy to give one to me. It was helpful for me, but everyone is different.

I got denied yesterday by Aetna. They changed their rules, and now they want 24 abnormal PH reflux monitoring to prove my “GERD.” Gosh, I hope my doctor tells them about the hernia, and we can get approved because of that or get that surgery + the bypass. How big was your hernia? Mine is 4cm, which is big (I imagine) since I’m a very small person. Wish me luck! -
Surgery is around the corner
ShoppGirl replied to jesdona's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve because I have bipolar disorder and was concerned about the absorption of medication with the bypass. The dr said he recommended the sleeve because of my lower BMI but would do bypass if I wanted it. The NP said she would go with sleeve because it’s the safer choice in terms of my medications. I did not lose as much weight as I had hoped to. In all fairness the NP did warn me that sometimes with Bipolar disorder that people do not lose quite as much as those without it but I only got down to 25.7 BMI which is still technically overweight and then I gained the bounce back weight. I sometimes wonder if I had just chosen the bypass if I would have lost more and had a little easier time keeping it off. The only thing is, who is to say that I wouldn’t be one of the people who lost less with bypass as well. What if it’s not the surgery choice at all. Don’t get me wrong. I am still happy to have lost what I did lose and if I can maintain this I will be happy enough. I just don’t have much wiggle room and do wonder if I had chosen bypass if it would be different. I think it’s only human to wonder if the grass would’ve been greener on the other side. You definitely do still have time to change your mind though. They told me I was in no rush to decide all along. If I had more time to research one question I would have asked is if their patients that revised sleeve to bypass lost more after the bypass (got to a lesser weight than they had with the sleeve). I know that doesn’t 100% mean people who get bypass first will lose more than they would have with sleeve but it seems like it would be the case. They are both excellent and relatively safe options so I don’t think there is a wrong choice really. My only real advice would be to take your time until you feel confident in your choice and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions until you are. -
Will I ever enjoy eggs again?
IrishKatieKat replied to IrishKatieKat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If I go extremely slow, I mean a bite every few minutes I can get down 1 egg. I've had Bypass. I know many people with just the sleeve and they were fine, but I wanted some other Bypass peeps to share their egg stories. Sent from my SM-G973U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Before my VSG, I only lost 2 lbs during my 2 week pre-op diet! Talk about discouraging! They had me only eating/drinking protein shakes and greek yogurt. I never eat yogurt because it’s too high in calories and carbs. I think that is what kept me from losing any weight. However, my surgery went very well and I recovered quickly so there’s that… This time around (I’m getting ready for a revision from VSG to RNY) I’m drinking protein shakes but not eating much greek yogurt. I’m sipping on chicken bone broth a lot instead. I started my pre-op diet 4 days ago and I’ve lost 3 lbs. so far. Hang in there! It’s all going to work out great! Just stick to your pre-op diet and everything will be fine. You’ll start dropping weight after your surgery. I lost almost 80 lbs in about 3 months after my VSG.

I had a revision in March From sleeve to rny due to GERD. I dont suffer from heartburn anymore which is great however I feel a lot less restriction with food and I find i am able to eat more than I was before and have actually gained 15lbs since my lowest weight after my sleeve in 2018. I’m feeling scared that I will continue to gain and feel like I shouldn’t have gotten the revision :(. Anyone else go through this? -
I am 6 weeks post op from gastric bypass and have not lost weight in 4 days . Is this normal ?

Surgery is around the corner
LookingForward22 replied to jesdona's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went into my surgeons office expecting her to want me to choose bypass because of my hi bmi and the fact I’m already taking Pepcid for reflux. She reviewed my medical history and asked me what I wanted. My reply to her was “after reviewing my medical history and your vast experience, what would you recommend for the most successful outcome for me”. She smiled and said I’m so glad you asked me that. Given my high BMI, if my goal was weight-loss alone she would have recommended Duodenal Switch. Then she went over the reasons why she doesn’t recommend that at this time. She then explained why she wouldn’t recommend a bypass for me. And then explained why she would actually recommend the sleeve for me. I was actually relieved because I really preferred the sleeve because of the lower risk and complications out of the three. She told me if I wanted to convert to the DS later we could. But if I put the work in and used my new tool to it’s fullest advantage - I might find that to not be necessary. My husband and I were both on board with what she was saying so that’s the direction we went in. She did a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve so the hope is I will be able to transition off of the meds for reflux at some point, but if I can’t so be it. And down the road if I feel like we need to go with another option that’s open to me as well. I’m not really looking forward to another surgery - so I’m hoping this is it. Only time will tell. You have time to decide. No two people have the exact same outcome - so the best anyone can tell you is look at all the information and make the best choice for you. Best of luck. -
Surgery is around the corner
KimA-GA replied to jesdona's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i am going to be getting the sleeve in late sept or early october. i decided against bypass because of outcomes of people i know. 2 people i know had sleeves with no big complications (very minor issues like nausea directly after surgery) and two more that had the equivalent of a sleeve for ulcers with the same positive experiences … all four of them kept the weight off but i also know 3 people who got bypass (different places/surgeons) and all three have had complications that keep sending them back to the hospital and have developed major nutritional problems and health issues from those too and, honestly, all three of them ate their way back to 3/4 of their original weight… (they are all from different areas of the country too!) reading medical literature i know the sleeve is better for me because i feel it’s safer, less drastic and has less inherent problems… but only you know what is right for you! there are successes and “failures” on both sides… educate yourself and make the best decision for you -
Band to Bypass Surgery coming up...SCARED
MaryRN66 replied to MaryRN66's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You will do great! This bypass is the best thing I've done for myself and I am already at a lower weight (by over 10 lbs) than I achieved with the band many years before over a much longer period of time. One thing I learned is you have to get the right multi-vitamin. I originally bought a MVM from this site and though it was touted to be the bomb, my labs came back veeeeerrrrry low on iron. The MVM I bought originally did not have near what my dietician said we need. She recommended Celebrate One 45 multi and I started taking and my followup blood labs are stop on! My body is transforming into a body I haven't had most of my adult life and thanks to light workouts each day (15 -20 minutes) I am not getting the "melted wax" look that so many of us significantly overweight women get after bypass and weight loss. My doctor said it's due to sticking with good hydration in addition to working out so my skin stays healthy by being hydrated and can suck in as I slowly lose the weight. I am very excited for you. Please check in from time to time. Blessings, Mary
