Fatty Liver almost Cirrhosis
catwoman7 replied to Flowerpetal1978's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had my weight loss surgery through UW-Madison. I lost over 200 lbs, but then, I was VERY compliant with the program. Average weight loss with bypass is 70% of excess weight, with sleeve it's 65% - although as with any average, you'll find people who lose less or more than that. I would have been fine with a 70% loss (but I lost more than that). message me if you want to chat about the program. -
Congratulations on your weight loss! I had my bypass in May and I'm down 45 pounds from when I had the surgery. I just dug out a bunch of shorts in smaller sizes that I haven't fit into in years and was so excited that they fit. My own personal NSV was being able to get into a kayak without plopping down like Pooh Bear, ha, ha.

September surgery buddies!!
Dogmom68 replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, September Surgery Buddies. I was wondering if you all minded if I joined your group. My surgery was pushed from August 8th to August 29th so I’m right at the tail end of the month. My recovery will be in September. I’m having a revision from VSG to RNY due to a hiatal hernia and severe GERD. I’m currently in my pre-op/ liquid diet stage. My Starting weight before VSG: 275, My CW: 207, My height: 5’9”, GW: 150. 😊 -

OH NO! I am so sorry, I know that sucks and you are probably so let down. i wish I knew what to say to help you feel better. Just focus on recovery and then before you know it your surgery will be here again. Why couldn't your surgeon do both surgeries? I had hernia repair, esophagus damage repair and bypass all at the same time. -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully

You absolutely need to contact your surgeon ASAP! I developed terrible GERD about 6 months after my VSG and have been living with it for about a year. It truly is horrible. My heart goes out to you. I wonder if you have a severe hiatal hernia which would cause your extreme reaction. Regardless, please call your doctor as soon as they open in the morning! You sound like you would be a prime candidate for a revision to your surgery. I really hope things get better. Please keep us posted.🙏🏻💕💕 -
Weight loss after revision
mrs.melmcc replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think he was concerned about additional weight loss, malabsorption, etc. If this doesn’t work, he still plans on bypass as the solution. I was 45 pounds from his goal when I had my endoscopy and lost 20 since the hernia repair. I was just diagnosed with severe anemia too. I’m still not back to a regular diet yet. No reflux symptoms or meds needed so far. It took a while to get a diagnosis. I moved to another state shortly after my sleeve and couldn’t find anyone that would do my follow ups. I was on PPIs for 8 years and all my PCP offered was to try a different medication. She just was not educated enough on WLS to know something more serious was going on than just GERD. -
Weight loss after revision
Tomo replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I don't understand what he means by too many side effects if he did the revision to RNY. Do you mean he was worried that you may lose too much weight? I was told that if I had the revision all my side effects will go away, not make more. After my revision, every issue (bowel, gerd, esophagitis... Etc. went away) as I was told. I had put it off for a long time though. He had suggested the revision as soon as I first got gerd but I resisted and thought medication will be fine. I was wrong, he was right. -
Weight loss after revision
Tomo replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was 206 at the time of my revision. I maintained 160 for years but I had put on 40 lbs after getting uncontrolled gerd unfortunately. My weight was stable as long as the PPI worked but it got to the point no medication worked. On the day of my revision, I was still 120 lbs. less than my 2008 beginning weight 320 lbs (plus). I weighed 113.4 lbs this morning. I am still trying to find my maintenance level of calorie as I am still losing. -
Is this GERD???
catwoman7 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
strictures are actually much more common with bypass, and even then, only about 5% of bypassers get them. That said, it *could* be stricture -- but that's pretty rare with sleevers. GERD would be much more likely. I had two strictures - they just do an upper endoscopy and stretch them out while they're in there - so no surgery required. It's a pretty easy-peasy fix. -
NEED HELP .... Vitamins and SEVERE GI Distress!
jojolynn73 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pre surgery I suffered from severe IBS (I think?). I actually don't have a clear answer. I had daily, debilitating cramping and issues with the bathroom...also, gas, bloating, and just the worst pain. Funny, when I wasn't eating after surgery, all of my GI issues went away. I am gluten, dairy, egg, soy, sugar free. Doesn't seem to matter, I am sick. My life doesn't feel worth living because these issues are so bad and so painful. I've been trying to take my bariatric vitamins and they are making my GI distress so much worse. I've even tried Flintstones, and I can't do those. I spent 1/2 my day or more in bed or on the bathroom floor writhing in pain...every day. Does anyone have any advice on the vitamins? I am scared because I had bypass, so I know I have to take them.. THank you. -
Weight loss after revision
mrs.melmcc replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Were you down to 160 at the time of your revision surgery? My surgeon was originally recommending conversion to bypass. He decided that bypass might have too many side effects since I have already lost a significant amount of weight. He opted to repair my hernia and place a mesh to see if that gets rid of the GERD. He said we still have bypass as a backup option. I’m almost 4 weeks post op and it’s been a tough recovery. I haven’t had any reflux or had to take meds since surgery. Hoping this works! -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to 3catnight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can't fake GERD. I mean there's a number of tests that can detect it via imaging. I developed GERD about six years after surgery. I had all of the tests that proved it so getting approved for revision was easy. I lived with GERD long enough on a double dose of Protonix to develop a kidney stone from overuse of PPI's... who would fake all of that? Not me. -
Dr. Matthew Weiner's Diet - Building a support network

Hi SWW - I'm also pre-op (my gastric bypass surgery is on 31 August) and planning on following Dr. Weiner's diet in the future. Have you watched his videos on YouTube? Tons of content there, his explanations helped me to understand weight loss surgery and finally make the decision to go forward with it. -
Is this GERD???
Berryello replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could have a stricture which can cause all the symptoms that you are saying. I would ask your surgeon about it. It could be acid reflux as well. Since you had the sleeve it will make Gerd much worse or even cause it. I hope you get the answers you are looking for. They may want to do an upper endoscopy to see what is going on. If it is stricture they will have to perform surgery to fix it. If it gets worse, you may want to consider going to they bypass. I'm in the process of getting my surgery. I am choosing the bypass because I have Gerd now and can not imagine it getting worse. wish you the best of luck. Rebecca -

Good. Hopefully they can give you something different to manage it or get the process started to do a revision. My fingers are crossed for you that they figure it out very soon. -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm going to call on Monday and see if I can get in to see my surgeon or the NP. The burning in my throat is constant now and I have zero desire to eat because everything either makes me really nauseous or triggers a BRUTAL reaction (pain, intense burning in my stomach, chest, and throat, nausea, shortness of breath, PAIN). I had my gallbladder out in 97 so I know it's not that. I'm going to try OTC Nexium (comes in 20mg but I'm going to buy extras and take 40mg) for about a week to see if it helps at all. The 40mg of Omeprazole isn't helping. I thought about taking it in the morning and at night, but I want to run that by my doctor first. If the Nexium doesn't help, and if taking one of them 2x a day doesn't help, I will absolutely do a revision to bypass. I'll figure it out with the pills, but I'm on day 3 of this and I can't do it. It's horrible. It's like everything and nothing triggers it. I don't know how people live like this. -
Severe Gerd and ulcers after gastric bypass
SpartanMaker replied to CKmommy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So I just wanted to point something out here. GERD and an ulcer are not the same thing. Having experienced both, I can say neither is fun. Certainly someone could have both conditions, but most likely, what you are experiencing is one or the other. Ulcers are basically a place where the lining has been damaged. These are most common in the stomach, but can occur in the esophagus or small intestine as well. ALL bariatric surgery patients are at some increased risk of these occurring, but they can happen to anyone, including non gastric surgery patients. GERD is a chronic condition due to recurring episodes where excess acid enters the esophagus from the stomach. Almost everyone has occasional acid reflux, but GERD is when this happens repeatedly. In most cases of GERD, the valve at the bottom of the esophagus is damaged or not working correctly for some reason. (Note that long term exposure of the esophagus to excess acid from GERD can cause an ulcer in the esophagus, but I digress.) Bypass patients almost never have problems with GERD, because the small pouch has very few acid producing cells. Sleeve patients on the other hand are more likely to experience GERD than the general population. This is thought to be due to the sleeve putting extra pressure on the esophageal valve. Both groups (sleeve and bypass), are subject to ulcers and are at more risk of them than the rest of the population. How to know the difference? WHERE it hurts is the biggest tell. if you are having a burning sensation in your chest or throat, that's likely GERD. Ulcers typically hurt in your belly. If you are having this issue, talk to your healthcare provider ASAP. Both conditions can have serious complications and you should not tough it out or hope it will go away. -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?
ShoppGirl replied to 3catnight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you have it this soon out I don’t think you will have as many issues getting revision. It’s when people all of a sudden claim to have it years out after they have regained weight that it seems to be more questionable as to whether they really have gerd or just want another surgery to lose the weight. (No I’m not saying that all those people are being dishonest it’s just that some have been and that ruins things for the rest). If you are still losing, though, why would you lie to get another surgery. Ya know? That’s just how I would look at it as a person who reviews claims. I would definitely make sure to call or see the dr and let them know everything though so there is documentation that it started early if I were you. Plus, the prescription meds were cheaper than over the counter for me and they are stronger. -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm sorry you're dealing with GERD already! Been there, done that. It's a MISERABLE way to live. And I lived that way for several years. It gets to a point that the best prescription GERD meds can't touch it. Google foods to avoid when you have GERD, there's several: fatty foods, dairy, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus, alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, mint, etc. You may try sleeping propped up or in a recliner, that's what I had to do. I'd say reach out to your surgeon and get prescription reflux meds and see what the surgeon says about how to treat it going forth. Are you okay with revising to bypass? GERD is common after lap band and sleeve since your tummy is operating under a high pressure system. And I know tons of sleeve/band patients have told their stories on here, just as I have. I told my story hoping to help prevent another person from choosing a high pressure weight loss procedure and make a better choice. The lap band permanently altered my esophagus, and I have dysmotility and nerve damage. It caused me to develop GERD along with bile reflux. If I stayed that course I was destined for Barrett's esophagus and possibly esophageal cancer. I hope this reaches at least one person considering the sleeve. I know GERD doesn't happen to everyone who gets a sleeve, but if GERD and revision and another 2 week pre-op diet doesn't sound like something you'd be keen to experience, please reconsider getting a sleeve. It's not the only weight loss surgery option out there. @SleeveDiva2022 I wish you the best and hope you feel better soon! -
Help! VSG or Bypass
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to RaisnHL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How is everything going now? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away. -
