  1. Hi everyone! I've been a silent reader of these forums and have found a lot of answers and inspiration in here that helped me a lot along my weight loss journey. This is my first post and just wanted to first thank you for sharing your experiences and stories and to share mine as well. Hopefully this will inspire someone to take the decision. I had my surgery on 30 January 2022 and I'm glad I did. I'm going to be 40 in September and I've always been overweight. I've tried several diets, lost and gained a lot of weight. The last diet I've tried was Keto diet back in 2019. I was able to lose 25 Kg. Then Covid-19 came, the lockdowns and having to work from home. I gained all the weight back and some more 😥. Fast forward to January 2022. My sister (who is also overweight) was in Egypt on a business trip. She met one of her classmates in there who lost almost half of her weight and looked unrecognizable. My sister's friend recommended that she consult the same surgeon that did her mini gastric bypass surgery. After visiting that surgeon, my sister decided to have the surgery by mid January 2022. We talked about it and I discussed with the surgeon over Skype and made the arrangements to have mine by end of January 22. I had my surgery on 30 January 22 and stayed in the hospital for two days. I then flew back to Malaysia a week after. My starting weight was 149 Kg and my current is 103 Kg. I'm super happy with my decision and consider that to be my 40th birthday gift to myself. I feel and look amazing and I'm able to do a lot of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't because of my weight. I even got myself a mountain bike that I ride every night around my house. I hope I will be down to two-digits weight just in time for my 40th birthday! I'm planning to join a gym next month which will hopefully help with loose skin and speed up the weight loss. I've started a list of all of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't and I'm really excited to tick as items much as I can.

    August surgery buddies!

I looked it up because I haven’t had my follow up and it was one of the questions I meant to ask. Now I’m not a medical expert and I don’t believe in being an internet doctor but it might help you. Here’s what I found. “Can you take pills after gastric bypass? Capsule, chewable and liquid medications can be taken immediately after surgery, but tablet medications need to be broken up or crushed for the first three months. This prevents medications from getting stuck in the digestive tract or not being fully absorbed.” I think if you think you can tolerate it than you can probably take it. I took a 500mg Tylenol tablet last night and didn’t have an issue. (And I did not crush it because it was late at night and I didn’t even think about).
  3. I read this a couple weeks ago and forgot until now to post about it. It's supposed to mimic gastric bypass without rerouting the digestive tract. I'm not sure how to feel about this minimally invasive implantable device. I previously had a Lap Band and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I guess if it makes it past clinical trials and gets approved, we'll see how patients do and if this is another option to end obesity and diabetes. Just thought I would share this with the community. https://www.jpost.com/business-and-innovation/tech-and-start-ups/article-713944

Stall - revision sleeve to bypass

How much have you lost since your revision? Sometimes during stalls, we don't lose pounds, but we are losing inches. I think it also depends on how much weight you have to lose. The less you have to lose, the slower weight loss can be. And stalls can happen all along the weight loss journey. I think they're a normal part of the process. It's our bodies/metabolisms adapting to the changes our bodies are going through. I'm only 6 weeks post op Band to Bypass revision. But I seem to be a slower loser than those with virgin bypasses. My restriction is there, depending on what I eat. Of course I feel it more with denser proteins. Compared to my Band, the Bypass seems to feel completely natural, unlike my Band. When I was able to start exercising, and increased my calories a bit, I noticed the scale started moving better. I hope to be released tomorrow to be able to lift weights again, I know that will also help me more. Best Wishes!
  5. I found this video very helpful in explaining some reason you may need to revise from VSG to RNY
  6. i was on omeprazole for a year or so. After surgery i was taken off that and put on Pantoprazole 40mg for 30 days. (EDIT: Oops you are bypass, i was sleeve)
  7. I had a sleeve revision to bypass in mid April. Weight was coming off and I could feel restriction although very different from sleeve. Fast forward to now (4 mos) and I’ve been stalled for a month & restriction seems nonexistent. I am aware restriction goes away after a period of time but did not expect this fast. Anyone gone through the same & can offer tips? Thanks

Length of time on PPI or other antiacid

I'm on Pantoprazole also. I'm almost six weeks post op revision, and I have to only take it for three months and then I can discontinue it. I don't want to continue on a PPI any longer than I have to due to their side effects.
  9. I would get the clear protein waters and sugar free Popsicles and sugar free jello I liked the chicken soup and strained out the stuff out because you can taste the stuff in it. The clear liquid part of the diet is easier if you have a variety. I had the bypass last December I'm not sure how long you are on the clear diet is for the sleeve also maybe something to make ice or Popsicles with protein water Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had the gastric bypass 3/15/2017 I still have gerd and acid reflux Sent from my octopus using BariatricPal mobile app

    69 yrs old and unsure..

I am in my 60s. I just recently had a revision WLS. I will speak mainly about my first WLS since revision was made for other reasons. For the first few months, the post-op diet does feel like a sacrifice. Especially the liquid phase. Not actually physically since I had decreased hunger but more mentally, emotionally since eating was never really about physical hunger to me. After the first few months, things normalized. I was able to eat whatever I wanted, just a much smaller amount and social eating was pleasant again. Because of the rapid weightloss, and the positive feelings of losing weight, it was much easier for me to transition to a healthier diet naturally. Was the the weight loss worth it and did it offset the sacrifice? Absolutely. I feel so much younger now being able to move as my body intended. Most health issues resolved too. I would do it again and again in a heartbeat.
  12. I had sleeve and a hernia repair. I also had mild reflux symptoms since Nov 2020 that was being treated with meds 2x a day. I asked my surgeon why sleeve, since I had reflux prior - why not bypass. She felt my reflux, being relatively recent and mild, would be addressed by my hernia repair. She explained her reasons for suggesting sleeve over bypass for me, all which made sense with her explanation so I went with her recommendation. I’m less than 2 weeks out but so far I’m very happy with my decision.
  13. During my sleeve (when I didn't prepare lol), it lasted for like 4 or 5 days. Sharp shoulder pain, if I bent over to pick something up... Etc. But honestly, it wasn't that bad then either. When I did my revision, and I knew better lol, I began chewing them when I got home, and I was fine right away. This mentions walking, simethicone (e.g. mylanta) and other tips on dealing with post-surgical gas. https://healthproadvice.com/procedures/Getting-Gas-Pain-Relief-after-Surgery
  14. I had gastric bypass but I was in a tremendous amount of pain at the hospital and I felt like it was barely controlled. I should’ve spoke up more but I’m quiet and I try not to bother people. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My dr eventually ordered me morphine and even that didn’t help. Idk what was going on! Anyhow, by day five I felt like I had turned the corner and felt much improved.

    Surgery tomorrow morning

This will be my 15th surgery I think? (Obviously not weight loss surgery, but lots and lots of other body parts have needed repair. 😁) It's super normal to be feeling anxious right now. I was worried about every one, and I'm not a worrier. Heck, I'm worried right now about my bypass and I still have 3 and a half weeks to go!
  16. I had an EGD and barium swallow test. The EGD documented my hiatal hernia but the barium test showed my GERD wasn’t severe enough for the revision from VSG to RNY. My hiatal hernia is being repaired and is covered by my insurance but the revision to RNY was denied. I had to pay out of pocket for the revision ($2600.) My surgery is on Monday 8/29.

    August surgery buddies!

If I remember correctly, I wasn’t supposed to take supplements until after my first post-op appointment. Then I just started taking them regularly. I take Barimelts. Multivitamin with iron, Biotin, Calcium, and Probiotic. My regular vitamins (pills) are additional iron (I needed it according to my bloodwork), B12 , and D3. My bloodwork has been excellent since my VSG 18 months ago. I’m getting ready to have a revision from VSG to RNY so some my routine may change. I read a lot and watched YouTube videos about vitamin supplements so they were very helpful. To be honest, it can’t hurt to take water soluble vitamins. It’s the fat soluble vitamins that you have to be careful not to overdo. That’s where your bloodwork will be extra helpful. 😁
  18. I had VSG in Mx. with Dr. Illan. You can look at my previous posts for details, but I do know he does a ton of VSG to RNY/MGB revisions. I had a phenomenal experience and would absolutely HIGHLY recommend HospitalBC for anyone considering medical tourism. Don't let the US scare machine dissuade you.
  19. I'm thinking about doing this surgery in Mexico. However, I don't think my husband is going to go for this process. Our concerns are safety, post-op, and covid. I'm not even sure if this is the right move, but I'm just looking at all of my options. $16k for a sleeve to bypass is a bit much for me to pay out of pocket in the states. So, for me the main driver is cost. My other option is to do the VSG to ESG which costs $11,995 in GA. I guess you can say cost is my driving factor right now because I really want to get this done. I need a second chance. By the way, I never been to Mexico, I don't have a passport (I'm probably the only adult who doesn't have one LOL), I never had covid, I'm vaccinated and boosted. Any help is appreciated.
  20. Hi, what test did you have to prove it? I just got a denial for revision because they want me to do a pH 24hr monitoring test to probe my GERD. I appealed because my GERD has been documented, and I have an EGD done showing that I have a large symptomatic Hiatal hernia, but I guess they want this test to prove it...I’m very frustrated.

    Therapy is a good thing!

I was so terrified of transfer addiction (my sister had gastric bypass about 20yrs ago and then turned to alcohol, she’s now 6yrs sober🙏) and just the mental aspect of the life changing journey! So I got established with a therapist prior to surgery day and I’m so glad I did, I feel it’s really made a difference for me!
  22. When I had my vsg, I took Tylenol powder packs when I got home for a day, it went very smooth. I did have gas pains so when I went for my revision to RNY this past August, I remembered to chew on some mylanta mini tabs too. No gas pains, and was even smoother.

    Bariatric Cook Book?

I got “The Gastric Sleeve” cookbook on Amazon. I actually had a bypass but it works for both surgeries. I wouldn’t say I LOVE it but it gave me a lot of different ideas about stuff I could have at different stages. I felt like I kept seeing the same recipes over and over again online.

New Here, Think I was Born Obese (my poor mom!)

Almost 100% sure I will get the bypass. I keep playing mind tricks with myself, maybe I can lose the weight and keep it off if I try hard enough. But after 56 years of life I know me, and know when I'm lying to myself. The surgery will help me for sure. I know it is not a cure-all, and I still need to work on everything else. But I believe the surgery will give me the edge I need to actually succeed this time for the rest of my life.
  25. VSG Surgery in scheduled for Sept 1, 2022. 4 years ago I started having a lot of gastric problems. Random and often vomiting, severe diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, etc. I had 2 colonoscopies and 2 endoscopes. Finally, diagnosed with gastritis and microscopic colitis but no reasons why those happened. I took lots of different meds, changed when and what I ate, etc. Nothing worked. It was so bad I was afraid to even leave my house at times. I went to a bariatric/general surgeon about a VSG. He ended up being just who I needed to help solve my huge gastric problem. At first, he said I would probably need to get a bypass instead of the VSG because he thought I may have had GERD/reflux. He sent me for another endoscope and discovered from the last endoscope (a year before) I had newly developed a hiatal hernia, stomach ulcers, and deformed pyloric. Did some more tests and found my stomach acid was about 5 times too much. My pancreas was not able to produce enough of the necessary stuff to neutralize the stomach acid traveling through the intestines, which in turned cause the gastritis and severe diarrhea. The bypass leaves a still somewhat function stomach so I will get VSG instead since it removes a large portion of the acid producing fundus. I will also get a repair for the hiatal hernia and pyloric. I am so thankful to my doctor for finding my gastric problems and explaining to me in a way I could understand. AND lose the weight, too! I ended up not having GERD/reflux at all, even I develop due to the VSG, I think I can handle it! Thanks for listening to my story!
