I read a bunch of horror stories before I had surgery and had to make myself stop. A lot of these stories are about things that rarely happen. You have to keep in mind that people post when they're having issues because they're looking for advice or support. The vast majority of us either never have complications or have minor ones that are easily "fixed" or managed. If things are all going well, people generally don't post about it. All those issues like tooth decay, bowel obstructions, etc, can certainly happen, but they're pretty rare. I had bypass. Strictures are the most common complication (besides dumping, which affects about 30% of us), but strictures only happen to 5% of us. And that's considered a "common complication" - if that gives you any idea... -
I have heard that a lot of people after bariatric surgery start having issues with their teeth, but that there’s not a lot to f study on it. So I am wondering, after gastric sleeve, or even bypass, how many of you have seen an increase in cavities, sensitivity, dental erosion or even teeth breaking?

Smoking cigarettes and surgery

My mother in law taste buds changed so she didn't crave smoking as much anymore. They usually want you nicotine free for the surgery. My vsg surgeon tested me for it, but my revision surgeon did not. Just like for any surgery, up to you if you want to quit after that. Lose weight, stop smoking as you know is the general consensus. -
Hello All, I am a heavy smoker and in the pre-OP phase for bypass surgery. I want to know if anyone used to be a smoker and how it feels after surgery. I've heard some people will lose their craving for smoke or do you have to quit?

Hey September buddies! You guys will do great! I got a Sleeve to Bypass conversion on August 29th. I was super stressed out about the 2 week liquid diet but it went by super fast after the 4th day. The 4th day was the worse hunger pain. -
Please give me hope and tell me there's someone out there who hasn't lost their hair !

it doesn't matter if it's bypass or sleeve. As someone else said, any major surgery can cause hair loss because of trauma to the body. I think we see it more often after WLS than some other surgeries, though, because in addition to the surgery stress, we're also taking in very few calories those first few months. not everyone loses hair. I lost very little. I barely noticed let alone anyone else. And for most people, you're the only one who'll notice it. Most pre-ops and early post-ops worry about hair loss (and loose skin, too), but I think i can speak for most of us who are a year or more out that in the grand scheme of things, it's really a blip on the screen. I don't know why I wasted even one brain cell worrying about it. -

Hey loves
I had my sleeve conversion to a bypass on August 29th and that week went by super fast! I was focusing on liquids as well as getting the house in order. We have my aunts wedding coming up so we've been busy planning that as well.
The day before my surgery we had a big sweet sixteen birthday for my cousin and the food that was served was a devil! I passed it like it was nothing. Big thanks to my fiance for sticking with me on the liquid diet.
OK so day of surgery my check in time was 9:30 AM. I got called in to do all the pre-work and then wheeled to the OR at 11:30 AM. When I tell you Mayo is the best place for medical care, it is THE BEST! I was in surgery for 4 hours and stayed in the recovery room for 2 hours. I was soooo worried about my fiance but thanks to the tracking of each patient he was able to track me. It took forever for them to find me a room, which was around 7:00 PM. They actually put me on the respiratory floor. My pain was horrible!! My belly area hurt so bad! It took awhile for the nurses to accommodate to what I needed because they weren't use to bariatric patients on their floor. The nurse I had was sooooo sweet. I will never forget her! She asked if I can stay another night LOL. My fiance actually couldn't stay the night with me....so he stayed with me for maybe an hour and half and drove off to care for our 3 dogs. I slept maybe until midnight and started to get uncomfortable. That is when I started to walk around the hall. I still had the catheter and the IV hooked up. Got maybe 3 heparin shots. My gas pains were horrible the whole night..I was scared to push anything out. My fiance arrived around 8 AM and I had my first diluted juice. My surgeon came to visit and said everything was perfect and I was such a perfect candidate for my situation. He is very excited to see the future of my bypass LOL.
I was able to drink 1/2 a liter and was finally discharged around 2:30 PM. The drive home was long because we had to stop at the pharmacy for my pain meds. It was about an hour and 20 minute drive.
Here I am today 5 day post-op, was able to walk around the store but did get some belly pains. Had some miso soup which was delicious.

Hell9 all new to the group, scheduled surgery is September 15,the initially wanted the sleeve, but I've been having issues with Gerd so decided to switch to bypass, just started2 week post-op diet ,its hard 2 protien shakes a day and 3 oz protien, meat, salads, ect and snack if i get hungry which i do uugh but i got this i can do it -
Hi everyone, I had my first appointment yesterday with the hospital and I will be having my pre op tests around December time, my surgery will be early next year ! Exciting! The only thing that worries me is loosing my hair! I know it grows back but I don't want to loose it full stop ! It terrifies me , my hair is the only thing I truly like about myself, are you more likely to loose hair with the bypass over the sleeve? Is there anyone who has been lucky and hasn't lost any hair ? -

This sort of happened to me, about two weeks before my revision surgery (and I doubt having a Lap Band previously had any bearing on my situation.) My favorite dentist that I'd been with for years retired and a younger dentist took over his practice, so I stayed. I met him for the first time in June when I went for my regularly scheduled six month exam and cleaning. Well, he found an issue with a filling. He said that it was leaking (failing) and there was decay behind the filling. I asked him why my previous dentist didn't see it six months ago... he showed me his "dental binoculars" and explained to me how they're newer technology that my "old & much older" dentist probably never used. Which he was right, my "old" dentist didn't use those. He told me he can see much better with those than without them, and catch issues sooner. So I chalk my experience up to having a younger, more modern taught dentist utilizing the latest tools. -

I think we all have this fear. I know I do. We're all here because we've repeatedly failed at other weight loss attempts. Here's the thing: It's easy to compare WLS to a forced restrictive diet, but it's a lot more than that. Both Sleeve and Bypass actually change a lot more about your metabolic processes. Here's a quote from the ASMBS: The important takeaway is that your sleeve is not just restricting what you can eat, it's fundamentally changing the way your digestive system works. It's a very effective tool, but you still have to eat right and exercise to be successful. The way I think about it may be a bit simplistic, but I compare it to digging a hole. Can I dig a hole with my bare hands? I suppose I could, but it's going to take a long time and especially if I need it to be a big hole, It may simply be too much for me. Give me a shovel and now I have a tool specifically designed to dig holes. I will still have to put in a good bit of effort to dig that hole, but the shovel will help me be successful. WLS is the same thing. I've been trying to "dig holes" with my bare hands. Now I'm going to be given a shiny new shovel. -

When it comes to Medical Tourism, I believe the issue with American doctors not providing care after the fact that you had a surgery in a foreign country, is a liability issue. If the surgery that took place in another country was done inappropriately, etc... the American doctors, if they choose to revise the surgery, or provide care, becomes entangled into the original surgeons "problems" with the surgery, and can face a lawsuit, etc. It's due to foreign surgeons being governed by different medical entities than in the US. It's a huge liability thing. I have a friend who went to Mexico and got her VSG and her primary care doctor told her no one will touch her stomach here if she ever has issues. I truly hope you find a way around all of the medical bureaucracies that you're up against, and get your revision. Best Wishes! 🤗 -

I just realized that this is old so the OP probably already had their surgery but for others….I had sleeve and while I am very happy I decided to do it and content-ish with my loss, I did not lose as much as I had hoped and I will always wonder if I would’ve lose more with bypass. I definitely wouldn’t let a few pounds be the only decision making factor but on a pro con list that could definitely be one bullet point.

I’m so sorry i know how horrible it is. I had the VSG October last year, lost all the weight but by my 4th month i couldn’t take the pain from GERD Dr had me on so many medications for it but nothing worked. I am now a week post conversion to Bypass no Gerd anymore. Best decision ever. I hope you can convert soon 🥰 -
Revision to bypass

Hi, i had the sleeve on October 6 last year, i lost all the weight and more. Unfortunately my Gerd was so severe i had to convert to bypass. I converted August 23rd so far so good. From what i know there is not a non surgical way to convert to bypass or to get a sleeve revision. I have a friend who had the sleeve and for following certain life style changes gained all the weight back she than got the bypass. She lost all the weight and has kept most of it off, she does struggle a lot and wishes she was more mentally prepare, she believes she wasn’t mentally prepare to make some changes and that has affected her progress both times. So i would say talk to your Dr and see what the best option for you is. Best of luck 🥰 -

Yea i agree. I believe a revision surgery takes longer so if they opened you up and found out they very well could close you up because they did not allow enough time to do the revision. Or get the scans that they needed ahead of time in order to proceed or whatever. I personally wouldn’t want them to be any less prepared than they could be when they cut me open either. -

I would think of you have gained all the weight back you would be approved fairly easily. It seems like it when people have only gained part back that they have to prove it’s medically necessary for reason other than those Based on BMI. I’m sure it all depends on your insurance but it seems to me like you would be okay. Hopefully someone who has actually had a revision with similar experience will see this and let you know based on actual experience. -

So Frustrated. Had VSG several years ago in Mexico, but struggling. My primary care dr referred me to the local Bariatric surgeon in my area, and they're the only ones covered by my insurance. After I told them I was sleeved in Mexico originally, they refused to see me. I'm sad and frustrated. I really don't want to go to Mexico again for a revision (not that it wasn't a good first experience, just I have a family and kids now, so the cash isn't there to get it like it used to be.) This is just a vent post. I'm just sad about the situation. -
I don’t have any symptoms of silent reflux. I just told my doctor I was leaning towards getting the sleeve and he said I should get that done to make sure I don’t have it because if I do the bypass would be better. I have to have an endoscopy anyways & he said they just place a capsule in my esophagus while they’re already in there & it’s simple but I’ve read some posts where people say the capsule is really uncomfortable until it falls off and I don’t know if I can handle that feeling in my throat. Are you talking about the silent reflux that can cause cancer? I haven’t heard that..

Wow that's awful! Maybe try a different doctor/hospital. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but when I scheduled my surgery for revision to bypass, I made my first appointment in June 2021 right in the middle of Covid, and my surgery was November 2021. Some additional precautions were taken in terms of visitors, etc. but otherwise went off without a hitch. -
