  1. nope. Once you're a few months out, restrictions will be lifted. There may be foods that you find your stomach won't be able to tolerate, but there will be no restrictions. I can eat all of those things - cake, pizza, sherbet - even real ice cream. about 30% of bypassers "dump", so they have to limit their sugar intake (or for some, fat). But most dumpers I know can eat "some" sugar (or fat). 70% of us do not dump. I never have (unfortunately, I might add...if I did, it would have stopped me from eating that cup of ice cream last night (which is just an occasional treat for me now, but still...))
  2. I know this might be an old one but is it true you won’t able to eat pizza ever again or have a tiny bite of cake? Not even a sherbet? After gastric bypass. 🙁

Be very excited! I wish I had been more excited and less nervous! My surgery was Wednesday 6/8 and I already feel 25 years younger and just fabulous. I had a massive hiatal hernia repaired, gastric bypass, and gall bladder removal. This surgery was the best decision I ever made. shopping: you may be bloated from IV Fluid when you go home. I bought a pair of shoes 1/2 size larger and it’s a good thing that I did. TEGADERM PATCHES: I was able to shower 2 days post op, but you don’t want the Water beating down on the laparoscopic sites. sugar free ICE POPS: I bought about 6 boxes of these because a couple of weeks ago, they were scarce. If I wake in the middle of the night, I’ll have an ice pop. BROTH: low sodium. SMALL HAND HELD STRAINER: so you can strain cream of whatever Soup. YOUR favorite Protein Shake. Mine is premier Peanut Butter chocolate. CRYSTAL LIGHT: pick your favorite flavors. I go through this like crazy. FAIRLIFE SKIM or 1% MILK: my nutritionist told me to buy it to thin shakes, put in soup. She was right. I bought Nespresso pods and K Cups in Decaf because I do miss the taste of coffee. STOOL SOFTENER: I bought Miralax. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR: my surgeon wants me to monitor my bp and get in touch with my PCP when it starts to come down. I wore hospital gowns in the hospital but had some nice lounge wear for when I got home. BANDAIDS: I’m on an oral bloodthinner for a month. The tiniest scratch will bleed like you can’t believe. SUGAR FREE JELLO:  so many packs of that. B COMPLEX VITAMINS: tiny capsules…easy to swallow. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else.

    gastric bypass for reflux

Hello Jelani, I primarily had bypass for weight loss but I am so excited to no longer have to take my acid reflux medication. Even if your surgery was primarily for acid reflux you still need some guidance on how to transition as your new pouch matures. I recommend seeking out a Bariatric Nutritionist to start and consider a therapist as well to support you.

    Thing I miss most

Hi Healthy4longerlife: I'm only two weeks post-op but can really appreciate what you are saying about how challenging it is to manage the relationship with food. I was already in therapy prior to surgery (mostly for anxiety but then to help me wade through my feelings and emotions related to having the bypass surgery as well as my relationship with food). I highly recommend exploring therapy as an option. I have no regrets in working with a therapist. For me, my emotional eating is directly related to my anxiety, so having that avenue to work things out is really helpful and then I don't feel like my family has to bare the brunt of my emotional upheavals. I'm a better mom and wife for it. I did OA off and on for many years, and it can also be a helpful place to land - especially if it works well for you to have a group and/or sponsor to be accountable to on a daily/weekly or more basis. Both options require personal work and delving into what is "poking at you" when it comes to using food for more than just nourishing your body. I suspect I will continue to struggle with this aspect of my relationship with food. Self-awareness is key to working through it, and you seem to have that! I'm rooting for you to find the best option for you. The WLS is just a "tool" - we all still have to work on that "head hunger." Here's hoping that there are better ways to quiet that voice inside that says we must eat in order to feel.
  6. Hello, I’m new to this site and also am on Day 3 of Liquid Diet. My surgeon limited me to 2.5 protein shakes per day and only water, crystal light, decaf tea, or any broth in between. So yes, I’m feeling miserable and so hungry I am even craving food I wasn’t too fond of before. I am having the gastric bypass surgery on June 27th. Thanks in advance for any support.

    Thing I miss most

I have found I can drink right before I eat, even seconds before and I am fine, but after eating protein or a meal I need to wait at least 30 minutes, otherwise I will feel pain when trying to wash down chicken or tuna or whatever. So for meals that I am eating soup, I will just eat the soup first and then can have the protein. My bigger issue is snacking on candy, junk. cookies, Its a constant struggle for. I realize my brain and body are not on the same page. My body needs to eat slowly and doesn't care to eat out since I would end up overeating and being in pain. But my mind is still thinking of eating out 3 times a day and in 3 more times and midnight snacks. I never cured my addiction, its tough, I find myself getting much quicker to anger at my wife or kids since i am having this internal struggle. I keep saying I need to see a good therapist or go to OA, get a sponsor and give it a good go. But i say I am too busy or its expensive. As is I am saving more than $1000 a month than before surgery. That is just for my restaurant bills , that I would go out and eat myself like lunch twice a day, like sushi with a friend and then Italian myself.... Its also tough since my energy levels are the same as before. I was always a high energy person. so i feel the same, except when exercising or walking I NOTICE A major difference. . I now weight 236 pounds( 107 kilo) and 6 months ago I was 366 ( 166 kilo) , like not out of breath, I started playing basketball twice a week and can play for 2 hours straight. But i lost that relationship that was my everything ( food) and I knew how addicted I was, I just didn't give a ****. It made me always soo happy. I did not get the bypass for looks or to feel good. I only got it so my wife is not widowed in 10-15 years, I am 35 and she is 31, and I owe it to her and my 4 kids to live another 40 years minimum. pre surgery my blood pressure was 175 /125, way to f**ing high!! Its just freaking hard as hell. Im venting since I need to right now. Im still the same funny as before, I know that and friends and family say it as well. But there is still a huge change. I am eating way to much junk but at the same time I dont even feel like I enjoy it close to as much as I use to, like only 20% as much ( If I could put a number) and that is because I cannot pound it. I used to love eating like 3 burgers in buns in 2-3 minutes, thats the part that felt so amazing when my mouth was stuffed and my belly filled. I cannot look to other areas, I already had a life of drugs from 13-23 , went to rehabs and now clean for many years, although I picked up smoking weed again right after surgery to help cope with the loss of my comforter, my right hand man, my happy self, my food... but I only smoke on weekends 1-2 times, since that is when I am not working. So not heavy at all. Cigarettes I stopped 16 months ago. But have had like 4-5 of them in the last 2 months, but wont let myself start again, so no wiggle room. I guess I am saying I need support, any support will be welcome. Its just hard. that is all !
  8. I had terrible pain about a month ago. Barely ate a thing, cramping, bloating, constipation. I was in agony. Surgeon thought it was an ulcer so he put me on carafate. In the meantime my gastro sent me for an endoscopy. That came back all good with mild inflammation in intestine. Still wanting to be certain nothing major was wrong, I asked my surgeon to send me for a sonogram and catscan. Sono came back with a fluid cystic like structure near the liver. My cat scan came back yesterday and it shows the fluid next to the liver but it also showed thickening of the intestine with possible telescope / intussusception. After everything I read about this, I'm so afraid. I have chronic constipation. I bloat alot and get heartburn. I dont throw up or feel nauseous and no blood in stool. I had the bypass in Oct 2020. Has anybody gone through anything similar ?? Im waiting on doctor to call me. I was reading that it can come and go ( the intestines sliding in and out ) PLEASE HELP 🙏
  9. Hey I had gastric bypass for reflux (5/13/22) as I was just on the side pushing it for weight loss too. Is anyone else here for this reason? Also, because I didn't go through the normal bariatric process beforehand, I don't know what the follow-up should look like either. I saw my surgeon 2 weeks post op and now not til 3 months with nothing in between. No nutritionist, no therapist, no nothing. Is this common?
  10. Going to your original surgeon, if you are still in the same town, is a good start, but that should only be a start. As Tomo suggests, getting a second (and third, even,) opinion is a good idea, particularly for a revision where the needs and solutions are more varied than the original surgery. Talking to a non-surgeon or two (such as a gastroenterologist) is also a good idea as there may be some non-surgical interventions that can do the job, and it is usually preferable to start there anyway, and then consider surgery if those don't work. Be suspicious of a surgeon who immediately tells you that if you have a sleeve, with GERD, that you need a bypass revision, without first doing some tests to find out what's really going on inside you. It may be a hiatal hernia which commonly causes GERD in WLS nd non WLS people alike, and that can be repaired without going through a revision (though some surgeons may not be comfortable or capable of doing so, or it can be a poorly shaped sleeve that inhibits good flow, and that can often be resleeved to correct that (though I probably wouldn't be depending upon the original surgeon to fix that, as it implies technique issues with the original surgery.) In short, don't be too quick to self diagnose - let the professionals do that (though it pays to be well educated on it,) and play the field to get multiple opinions - they all can have somewhat different background and experiences, and that drives their opinions; don't settle for the first one that you come across. goo luck in sorting this out....

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi, vabs: My surgery was last Wednesday, 6/8. I have never felt better in my life…I had a massive hiatal hernia that was repaired via gastric bypass. I found it helpful to have a pair of shoes that fit rather loosely to wear home from the hospital. It’s unavoidable to be bloated after surgery, and you will need comfy shoes till the Fluid dissipates I had a supply of sugar free popsicles in the freezer. I had about 6 boxes of them because a few weeks ago they were impossible to find. Broth…check the sodium levels. You won’t want to be retaining fluid. If you have a favorite Protein Shake, stock up. I was off Clear Liquids and on Protein Shakes from the day I arrived home which was 2 days post op. I also stocked up on sugar free Jello, crystal light, unsweetened ice tea, and I had ice packs in case I wanted to ice my incisions. I never needed a heating pad. I had a box of tegaderm Patches even though my incisions were covered. I used the tegaderm as a safety precaution. I had 45mg per bottle Fairlife Core shakes on hand because it’s a super easy way to get our Protein requirement. My nutritionist also highly recommended Fairlife Skim or 1% milk so I stocked up on that. And Decaf coffee pods. That’s all I can think of. I packed really lite for the hospital. I wore the hospital gown and I was given compression stockings in the hospital when I was being prepped for surgery. That’s all I can think of. Best of luck to you. You will do great. ❤️

    Need some advise

I'm sorry you're facing this. It is true that you likely will not lose as much with each successive surgery. If you don't have a complication from the sleeve (like GERD), your insurance will not likely approve another surgery. Most insurance only covers one bariatric surgery per person, lifetime. Other options you have include meeting with a nutritionist and bariatric therapist to work with the sleeve you already have, or paying out of pocket for the bypass . Good luck!

    UK self funding sleeve

I had my Sleeve done last November, right in the thick of Covid. I am not sure if Covid made a difference but I imagine it did. My private hospital was picking up a lot of ops from the NHS. It was very busy. In all it took 8 months from start to finish. I was initially told 4 - 6 months. The hospital that I went to had to stop its Bariatric work and have its practices audited. That took an extra, very frustrating 2 months. Every surgeon has their own pre op diet some lucky people have none or just a day on liquids. I got 3 weeks of milk and vegetables. High carb veg was not allowed.
  14. I had a RNY over 4 years ago. For the last 6 months I have been very nauseous most days. Somedays I can’t do much. It’s not anyone thing like the smell of food or what I eat. I have been to my PCP, a Gastrologist & a naturopath. No one can figure anything out. I have had a barium swallow test & an EDG. Everything looks normal. I’m not comfortable going back to my surgeon because he’s not a bariatric surgeon. I had the surgery for medical reasons not related to obesity. He told me to get all my info from the internet. I don’t think he knows how much different info is on the internet for gastric bypass! Has this happened to anyone else? If so what was wrong & did you do?

I need help... Everything makes me sick

food not tasting good is a common reaction and is almost always temporary. the sick part isn't normal, though. Has this just come on recently? If so, maybe a stricture (??) (I'm not familiar with mini-bypass, so not sure if this is common with them. About 5% of regular bypass patients get them - but I don't know about mini-bypass). I'd see a doctor or go to urgent care...this isn't normal.
  16. which surgery did you have? Have you been like this all along, or is this a new development? Just asking because if you're a bypass patient and if this just started, you could be developing a stricture. You're in the right time frame for it. otherwise, like the above commenter said, maybe your stomach isn't quite ready to progress, so in this case, you'll need to back up and stay at the previous stage for a few more days and try again lastly, lots of people can't handle eggs for the first few weeks or months after surgery - so that could be another reason in any event, I'd let your clinic know what's going on.
  17. Hi all, my mini bypass was 4/14. I have been really struggling. Food does not taste good at all and everything makes me sick. It's making getting protein and liquids in a nightmare. I've been extremely depressed and irratable and just really struggling. It isn't about me nit being able to eat like I used to but rather everything I do eat I feel disgusted and nauseous. I had my surgery in Mexico and just really am feeling like I don't know what to do... I keep thinking ill feel better the next day and it's not happening. Is anyone else having a hard time?? Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

My hernia repair, gallbladder removal and gastric bypass were last Wednesday, 6/8. I’ll try to answer your questions: I started the process in January of this year. Surgeon suspected and diagnosed a massive hiatal hernia- 2/3 of my stomach was in my chest. It explained my shortness of breath and heartburn. I was approved by CIGNA, surgery date was set. I was given a 6/8 surgery date on 5/16. I researched extensively prior to selecting my surgeon. There are quite a few MDs in my family (sister, daughter, etc) and I leave no stone unturned when I research. I looked up ‘complication’ rates, everything. My surgeon’s practice is a Cigna Bariatric Center of Excellence. I am 1000% totally pleased with every aspect of the care I have received. My doc’s personality and bedside manner is/was perfect for me. I relate well to intelligent professionals in the medical field and my doc and I communicated with very level footing. He never spoke down to me, we were very conversational and he has a great sense of humor which is an absolute must for me. He told me my stay would be one overnight but possibly two. It did end up being 2 nights. I do not metabolize anesthesia well, and he got my nausea under control immediately when it was obvious that the usual protocol was not going to work for me. I saw him prior to going into the OR. He was upbeat and positive as was I. He was leaving the next day on vacation and we chatted about that. His practice has a protocol of ENHANCED RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY, and it has been a great outcome because of that. The anesthesiologist saw me prior to surgery and he used a nerve block on each side of my abdomen an hour before surgery. He said it would last for 3 days and I believe him. I did not ever need pain meds post op. Amazing, right? The biggest issue for me was debilitating nausea and it was addressed immediately and the outcome was positive. My care in the hospital was five star! I could not have asked for anything better. My husband was in my suite with me 24/7. The suites are new and resemble hotel studio suites. No kidding. Two flat screen TVs. Spotlessly clean. Everything one might need to be comfortable was there. We checked in on 6/8 at 8am with surgery scheduled for 10:20. My doc was running ahead of schedule and he had booked the OR for 4 hours because of the extensive hernia issues. He completed the procedure in 2 hours. He told my husband it was textbook and I was a very easy patient. 🤗 My husband and everyone else whose loved ones were in surgery wait in a large area. They can follow the patients progress on a tv screen using an ID number for their loved one. It indicates pre-op, entering OR, procedure underway, procedure completed, surgeon on way to talk to family, recovery room, etc. I’ve boarded cruise ships that didn’t have as smooth of a boarding process as WakeMed Hospital and their surgical department. LOL I was in my room at 3:15- there was an emergency unrelated to me and I was held in recovery a little longer than is typical. Once in my room, my RN, and his nursing assistant were always there tending to me. The nausea issue developed immediately and was addressed immediately. I have used only ice for discomfort at one laparoscopic site, and I have showered and I am walking. I was nervous and antsy but the hospital staff was totally in control, responsive to any questions, and their manner put me and my husband at ease. I packed very little. Extra long phone charger, toiletries, extra undies. I went home in the clothes I wore to the hospital. Thankfully I had loose shoes. I think one might expect to be bloated with Fluid and air. The gas pain scenario that most seem to mention was not an issue for me. My husband would rub my back and ‘burp’ me…lol…for every burp I had, my husband would burp 6 times. 🤣😂 Seriously. Ask me anything you want to know. And good luck to you,

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi. I had gastric bypass, hernia repair and gallbladder removed on June 8. Today was my first full day home. I had no difficulty getting in my liquids but the protein is another thing. I hate the sickening sweet taste of the clear protein drinks. I would be lost without sugar free popsicles. Other than that, I’m playing a lot of candy crush and drinking Crystal Lite. And resting when I’m tired. welcome!
  21. you can revise sleeve to both gastric bypass or duodenal switch. I know of several people who've had those revisions. you can also revise a bypass to a duodenal switch, but that's a complicated surgery and only a few surgeons in the country are qualified to do it. Basically, they have to completely reverse the bypass, then create a sleeve, then do the intestinal part of the DS (DS is a sleeved stomach with a partially bypassed small intestine) I don't know the answer to your other question (about the pain) - maybe someone else will.
  22. Has there ever been an issue to where people have chronic back pain issues after the sleeve? I had a gastric lap band to sleeve revision about 10 years out. I've had back spasms in my back. It is in my back and in my upper leg and thigh area. Can you get the gastric sleeve be revised to other procedures? Can you get it revised to a gastric bypass? Can you get it revised back to its old way or to a duodenal stitch? Anyone heard of anything like this? Any ideas? Do you think a revision would stop the pain?

    Need some advise

I had the same path of band, sleeve, then conversion to bypass in March. I didn’t have any trouble with insurance, but I have Medicare and a supplement. I also had three different surgeons. The first two were in Mexico for the band and then Las Vegas for the sleeve so I had no follow up as well. I explained to my surgeon that I didn’t really use the sleeve properly due to stress in my life. I also had GERD which probably helped with the approval. Good luck to you, I hope that you are able to get your revision.
