    August Surgery Buddies!

I feel the same way about my fur baby. Wow! American Eskimos! Beautiful babies! What all is your surgeon having you do to prepare for your surgery? I’m actually having a gastric bypass as a revision to my gastric sleeve. I’ve had terrible acid reflux after my sleeve so the bypass should help with the GERD. Plus, I’m hoping to lose 30 more lbs since I only lost 40 lbs after my sleeve. I really should have had the bypass to begin with! Even though my BMI is 30, I still have to do the two weeks of liver shrinking diet prior to my surgery.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

The threat of dumping and the reduction in reflux were the two main reasons why I've chosen the bypass.

    Stall

Hey Y’all! My Gastric bypass was on may 2nd 2022. I’m down 38 pounds but I’ve stalled! Sitting at around 276-278 (it fluctuates) I’ve been eating salads, nothing fancy but I measure everything out which ends up being around 240 calories with my dressing. And I’ve been obsessed with the no sugar added out shine popsicles. I’m wondering if my calories are too high? I usually am around 800-1000 and I walk and go to the gym so I’m thinking this is my maintenance calories and I’m not enough in a deficit? I’ve decided to switch it up and this week go back to basics of just 2 oz of protein and my serving of veggies. And I’ve cut back popsicles to 1 a day. I actually bought some popsicle holders and plan on taking my crystal light water and freezing it into popsicles to help get my water in also. Just wondering everyone else’s experience with stalling and how you got through it? I’m proud of what I have lost but can’t help feeling like I’m failing at this.l sometimes.
  4. funny thing is after my surgery while in the hospital i was given celebrex a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory up until my discharge. After discharge i was prescribed Hydrocodone for pain tho it was not needed since the main pain was from the air in your chest which pain medication does nothing. my surgeon said that NSAIDS were not to be taken for gastric bypass people. and for sleeve people on a very limited amounts.

    Any July buddies?

I am having bypass on July 18. Starting liquid pre-op diet on 11th. Very excited!! Good luck to everyone!
  6. I can certainly understand that, as they tend to be familiar with different dodges used to get around their exclusions. There are a number of procedures that are used to treat GERD, depending upon what the cause is. Fixing a hiatal hernia, for instance, doesn't require a bypass to accomplish, though such repairs are commonly performed in conjunction with WLS, either a sleeve or pouch type. When I had my VSG, it was just starting to be routinely approved by US insurance companies -some did, others still called it "investigational", As a legacy of that, insurance commonly excluded the 2 step DS (as the DS uses that sleeve as its basis, in extreme cases they would do a VSG first, and then once the patient had lost enough weight to undergo the longer switch part they would do that as a second procedure - that was the origins of the VSG, as some found that they lost enough on just the VSG that they didn't need to go through with the second part. Insurance got wise to the dodge of getting approval for the DS but only doing the first VSG part, so they blocked that approach. Of course, for those who really needed to go that route, it was still available but they needed to jump through more hoops to get there. Had your surgeon approached them, it might have flown (assuming that it was a justifiable approach for your GERD, as they would not be asking for an RNY WLS, but using different terms and codes. The same basic procedure (it's called a Billroth II) is used for treating several different maladies, and the rules and codes are different for each. The sizes of limbs and the pouch are different for an RNYGB WLS than they would be for a partial gastrectomy used in treating gastric cancer or gastroparesis, though they are the same basic procedures.

    Bowel Movement after Sleeve

I had Bypass.... but.... For probably 7-8 years I have suffered from IBS with constipation. I was on a prescription to have BM's. Nothing over the counter worked. It was horrible. Before surgery I was so worried about it getting worse since constipation is such a common problem after WLS. Honestly, it was my biggest concern over everything else! So, POST OP: The first 2 days I had bad diarrhea. Not in large amounts because I wasn't eating, but it was all day long. Then I went from one extreme to the other complete constipation! UHG.. 6 days to be exact... my surgeon told me not to take my prescription without talking to him first so I finally called. He was on vacation so the office was waiting to get a response from him. In the meantime.. it came... SOOO hard.. SOOO painful. Took almost 2 hours on the toilet!! it hurt to sit down afterwards. Was ridiculous frankly! Then is was about another 3-4 days, a couple times of this less hard and painful each time. Then all a sudden I AM CURED! I am 3 months post op now and more regular than I have been my entire adult life!!! I have no problems going, almost every day sometimes every other. It is normal and easy and I take NO laxatives, supplements (for BM's) or prescriptions! Naturally regular and I must say it is wonderful. I never thought I would be so happy to poop! I know a lot of people drink miralax every single day to keep them regular. I really hope it works out for you and you find relief because I truly understand you suffering!
  8. A lot of sleevers have episodes of the foamies. It usually occurs if you eat too fast or too much or something that is too dry/coarse. Dumping is less common with sleeves than bypass. (Dumping occurs if you eat too much sugar or fat.) Both side effects can be managed simply by being careful about how & what you eat. I’m three years out & I had a bout two days ago. I ate too quickly because I wasn’t eating mindfully (I was having a ‘discussion’ with my mother 😉) & cough, spit & up came that last bite. I know you said your reflux developed as a complication with your band & once it was removed the gerd stopped, but I’m wondering if this may make you more likely to develop gerd post sleeve. I don’t know but it may be worth asking your surgeon if bypass might be a better option. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  9. Foamies is more of a gastric bypass thing. I had sleeve 2 months ago. idk what restrictions you have on the band. but for us mainly small meal sizes... Protein is first and most important, waiting 30+ minutes after eating to drink anything. taking the multivitamins, calcium for life, and the possibility of developing severe GERD and needing a revision to bypass is a big thing and something i worry about. If you have GERD or heartburn then bypass will be what you need to get.
  10. You know i tried something similar. So weight loss surgery is excluded for me. So i spoke to the insurance to see if i was diagnosed with severe gerd, would they cover gastric bypass surgery since its basically a cure to it. They straight up told me no. I was like of course thats just my insurance.

    Coffee

my pouch (I'm a bypass patient) doesn't tolerate really acidic coffees, so I try to find some that aren't all that acidic. And some aren't. I usually get coffee at Aldi's (it's not labeled as "low acid", but still, it doesn't bother my stomach). Just experiment with a few brands/types and see what your stomach will tolerate.
  13. Probably not going to get around that. I have thought about that too since my state excludes all bariatric surgery. and i am hoping i never have heart burn issues but if i ever needed a revision to bypass my plan would be to move to another state temporarily, Set up residency, Get insurance, Get the procedure done and move back. Yea lots of work but $20K+ for revision is too high for most people to pay out of pocket. I paid $19K for my sleeve out of pocket andi am out of money lol
  14. I today ran out of my vitamin starter pack from my Dr. I plan on ordering a package plan around the 5th of July (waiting for payday). I am not sure why or how I waited so long to get more. 🙄 So my problem is I need to get something that I can take for a week or two until my bariatric vitamins come in. Does anyone know how I might can find something? Thank You, Tracy (RNY gastric bypass 5/23/22)

    “Low” BMI Qualifiers?

Hi Bluemoon, no I don’t mind saying. It was $25K at Cleveland Clinic (CC), including all the pre- and post-op nutrition, psych, etc. appointments. I could have found a cheaper place, I know, but I had had a heart valve replaced at CC two years earlier, and just felt comfortable there. I had initially gone to CC looking to get a gastric balloon, but the surgeon said they didn’t do those any more there. He recommended a sleeve or bypass (I hadn’t realized that was an option, even as self-pay), and the rest is history. Worth it? Absolutely! Wish I’d done it years earlier!
  17. I know it's early, only 3 weeks after my bypass. But it's just been one struggle after another. I was increasing my ability to eat and drink for a little while, but I seem to be going backwards now. I can barely force myself to consume maybe 25oz of liquid and 4 bites of food a day. But I can't stand any of the protein I've tried. I found one shake that's okay but I can only tolerate about half of it and not every day. If I have a shake or half a yogurt, I can't eat for the rest of the day at all. I feel sick all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, lightheaded, weak. I use a transdermal multivitamin patch approved by my surgeon. I'm having big regrets. I know it will probably get better later but I feel like it won't ever get better if I'm only consuming water and a couple bites of food (usually yogurt, well chewed soft meat, or sugar free ice cream). I have my 1 month follow up next week. Doc is already mad I'm haven't found a way to meet my protein goals. I'm trying so hard it but it's so uncomfortable to eat drink, even water. I haven't been vomiting so I don't think there's any real problems but I can't survive like this.

Got a surgery date! Sept 6th!

@loli_lotus I’m very new to this. Just began researching. That’s a pretty quick turn around. My mom had gastric bypass, and she had to go through multiple appointments for 6 months before they’d even schedule that surgery.

    Stall out and depressed

They're giving you the average statistic. Statistically, gastric bypass patients can expect to lose 70% of their excess weight. But like with any other statistic, you're always going to find people on either side of that. There are people who only lose 30 lbs - and there are other people who lose 100% of their excess weight. If you want to lose more than 70% of your excess weight, it's certainly possible. It'll take work, but you'll find several examples on here of people who've done it. re: wearing the same clothes at 250 that you used to wear at 235, that's because you're building muscle. A pound is a pound is a pound, but a pound of muscle takes up a lot less space than a pound of fat. Muscle is very dense. So even though the scale reads 250, you probably appear exactly the same to the outside world as you did when you weighed 235. also - muscle holds a lot of water - that accounts for some of the weight as well.

    Stall out and depressed

I appreciate it, thanks! Just to be clear, I've lost about 60 lbs in 4 months since my surgery. I lost 30 before my gastric bypass. I will definitely try to focus on the positives but as you know it can be such a frustrating experience when it's a huge goal in your life. Hopefully, this gets better!

    August Surgery Buddies!

Hello everyone! Just got schedule for gastric bypass surgery on 8/24. Very excited to be moving forward!

    Gastric bypass

Hi! I will be 68 in August. My gastric bypass was almost 3 weeks ago. This is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Already my bp meds have been cut in half, and I am walking 3 miles a day. I also had my gallbladder removed and a massive hiatal hernia was repaired
  23. I know this is posted on here time and time again but I'm so frustrated. I'm getting ready for a cross country move. I really imagined that by this time I'd be in the 230s. I have stalled out for the last 3 or 4 weeks and am so frustrated about it. I keep going in between 248 and 251. I don't know if this is maintenance because im only a bit over 4 months post op from gastric bypass. I have definitely increased my calories but am eating in a deficit. My BMR is around 1900 and I'm eating in between 1000 and 1300 a day plus exercise. I have been slacking in water and have not been having protein shakes at all because I'm getting a decent amount through solid food and don't want the extra cals. How do I get past this? I'm going to stay off the scale until the end of next week but I'm still feeling really down and bad about myself. I feel like a disgusting fat mess honestly. I haven't had these feelings since pre op and I just need to vent about it. I was experiencing a period of mania a week ago for a good 2 weeks straight (I'm bipolar) and missed some of my meds. I think I might be crashing and going through a depressive state. It's not super bad but the weight loss stall is making me have a lot of negative self image and feelings of failure. Should I just get back on liquids for a week or something? I'm losing my mind and getting depressed as hell. I'm taking my meds regularly again. I really only missed like 3 or 4 days and I take a small dosage. So I'm hoping to even back out soon but the stall is messing with my brain and confidence. What do you do? 24. Doesn’t look like Renew Bariatrics does the mini gastric bypass. If any of you had this procedure in Mexico, where did you go?
  25. oh my you look great!!! I’m glad to hear you had a great experience. I’m so excited I wish it was here already lol What surgery did you have? I am getting to mini bypass. No no one invited me to the Facebook group. I will message them now. Thanks for the tip. Did you fly home? I will have a 5 hour flight. Ugh 😩
