    Frustrated

Hi all! I am new to this group. I'm sure this question has been answered before but I just need some reassurance. I am 51 years old and had the gastric bypass on 3/5/18. As of today I have lost over 50 pounds in 6 weeks. A few weeks ago I tried eating the soft food stage. I tried cottage cheese, yogurt, canned tuna, soups, etc. I would eat and it would feel like it was stuck and then I would have a severe pain in my stomach. It felt like the food wasn't going down. I would then throw it back up. I saw my doctor and I had an upper GI done and minor surgery to widen my esophagus. That was 2 weeks ago. I am still having the same issue. I feel week, have headaches and have no energy. I want to starting exercising but am afraid that I will pass out. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this happen? Thanks! Cindy S.
  2. What's the difference?? Why would someone want the mini when you could have the regular bypass?

    Decisions, Decisions.

Well apparently, biological kids aren't really an option for me, apparently - which is fine. In fact, I'd hope they'd just take out all the stuff that's not working correctly for me haha. (the malfunction of my girly stuff isn't due to weight) Its come down to an insurance coverage question, really. I want the sleeve but will settle for the band if I _have_ to - and then pay for the sleeve revision later if need be. I don't have the funds to do it now but hopefully in the future.
  4. I hope that they are able to do it in one surgery with no complications. I know that dealing with two surgeries would be stressful AND very expensive. Hopefully the damage won't be very extensive. As for the recovery after the band removal, I don't know. I have known only a couple of people that had their bands out without getting a revision, but they didn't really talk about anything special as far as the diet. I'm sorry that I couldn't help with that part. Good luck and many prayers for you with your surgery.

Yes it was manageable. The pain was really the rubbing of my pants on the incisions and that was fixed with better band aids. However I will say that I am an old pro with surgeries. The gastric bypass was my 11 surgery in my life and I am 33. This was easy compared to other surgeries for me - for example shoulder surgery I was out much longer due to pain. I say that because if this is your first surgery expect it to be a little harder on your body.
  6. I am so grateful I had the second fill. I was 4.5 out of a 9 cc. band, but she only withdrew 4cc- some disappeared; no wonder I could out eat my gastric bypass friend. I now am filled to 5.5, and am eating the portions I want and am staying fuller longer. Drinking no cal fluids between helps with hunger. Drink 1/2 the amt. of body weight in ounces- a 189 lb. person needs 95 ounces, preferably water.
  7. Hello, I am probably going to have a band revision done at sometime this year due to a hital hernia (my first dr. stated in her paper work I did not have one before the surgery and now 3 years later I have one) and my current LB doctor would like to do a revision and fix the hernia and maybe reposition the band....has anyone had this done at all? I had such a hard time trying to find a new doctor as my old one left to open up a new center in Chicago...sometimes I regret my decision to have the surgery if I knew then what I know now about other LB doctors not wanting to take on new patients....what happens when you move/or your doctor leaves the practice? Thanks!
  8. Good evening, I would like to know if anyone has any idea how much revision surgery will cost to get resleeve due to technical failure? The sleeve was left too large due to revision from lap band. I'd appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
  9. I'm having my band removed and gastric bypass done Feb 10th. How long was everyone off work? Most things I see say 2 weeks but some people are saying 6 weeks minimum. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Lap band revision

It's complicated to explain. It stands for biliary pancreatic diversion with duvoal switch. Similar to a gastric bypass but more weight loss expectations and lower risk of regaining weight. Sent from my XT1565 using the BariatricPal App

    Esophageal dilation b4 bypass?

I would ask your GI dr but it sounds to me like it would be wise to get it done before the bypass.

    Do I or don't I

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 5 years ago. It was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. Here is a link to my experiences with the surgery. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

    Sleeve vs lapband...

Thanks so much Everyone! Congrats on your success! Wow Crazypants that is amazing that your dr doesn't do lb anymore...that speaks volumes. So happy to hear from people who've had the lb and revised to sleeve. It's such a scary decision because every body's body is do different. U w has 2 csections do I'm not as worries about the surgery as I am the recovery with 3 kids and full time career. What was your recovery like? Is 11 days off work enough (I can be at desk if needed ).

    Sleeve vs lapband...

Good luck with your journey. I'm a band to sleeve revision because I got tired of ER visits in 2012 because the band just closed on its own... Painful projectile vomiting damaging my insides. I always protected my port. If I exercised too much port was painful. Constant adjustments = time off work = copays.... The slime was gross.i had absorption issues. Lol Sleeve... 4 months out. Amazing. I have to take Prilosec 2 times a week but wahhh. I barely get to wear "new" jeans/capris before I have a buy a smaller size. I am down over 50... I think... I don't weigh.... I update my sig when I see my doctor. My dr did my band in 2008 and sleeve in 2013.... He doesn't do bands anymore because of all the problems he's seen!!!

    Busy! 40 Days

40 days to surgery.... and I've been keeping myself busy so that time doesn't stand still. Keeping up with caring for my skin, trying to improve it. My Clarisonic Mia came in and i've used it twice. pretty cool. Using my Ambi and Garnier lightening creme on the dark spot on my face. Not seeing much yet but it's been just a week, so I have a ways to go before I see something. My parents are coming to visit next month... they said they were coming, I just wasn't sure when or IF they were coming for sure. They will spend Christmas Eve and Day with me and then go spend time with my Aunt and the rest of the family. They live south of town, about 45 minutes from me. I didn't even have a bed for the guest room so I had to scramble to order something. I also ordered a table and some chairs since I didn't have that either. I'll be putting that together this week and finishing up the bedroom. That will be RIGHT AFTER surgery! My mom had Bypass in 2001 so she gets that I don't plan on being the life of the party. At least I will get to see them. I have no idea what to get to have here at the house... I won't be able to eat any of it. Is it bad that I am kind of relieved? I don't really like holiday food. I stuff myself with the few options that I like and then hate myself for it. This year I won't be able to do that. Anyway, on with the preparation...I tried the Celebrate NS vitamin powder you mix in with a drink........ewwwwwww. no. No way I am doing that twice a day. As far as I can tell, Dr Alvarez only requires his patients to take a multivitamin. I got some Wellesse liquid multi and also one with vitamin c and D vitamin, and also some liquid protein. I figure I'll take all of that that I can get and if I can add it to something else, that would be great. I ordered a couple of genie bras, an electric kettle (for making unjury protein soup) and a cup warmer to keep it warm since it gets cold so fast. I also ordered a warming pad... is that what you call it? I can't remember. I got one, anyway. I want to also get a binder because I heard that it helps, especially when on the plane. I am liquid dieting Sunday through Wednesday this week. Actually I started yesterday but I went to brunch first. Dinner was soup and later on I had an Atkins shake and I've been drinking my water. Thursday is our company Thanksgiving dinner and I want to have some of that but I will probably get back on mostly liquids. I still want to hit the 230's by the time I get on the plane. I will be on full liquids by December 10th.

Lap Band Plication Or Lap Band?

The iband is pretty new with no long term studies (which is one reason I didn't chose it) but with Lapband, bypass and what we know of the sleeve the initial weightloss has different rates(Lapband being slower) but the 5 yr mark is the same.at the end the the average weightloss is the same with all surgeries.

    DC Support groups?

I'm in Silver Spring and will be having my bypass surgery at Sibley Memorial Hospital in February 2019. I believe they have a support group, and I would definitely like to participate. I would like to know about other DC area support groups that have worked for people. Perhaps we could organize a monthly informal meetup?
  18. Okay, to elaborate...I had issues from early on with my band being somewhat spastic...if I was stressed out, my allergies were flared up, I had PMS, ETC, it would be so tight I could only sip liquids for days...I kept very little fluid in my band to try to counter act this...but I did lose weight! Eventually, I got sick, sick to the point I couldn't tolerate fluids and was dehydrated had to have several liters of IV fluids and everything removed from my band...after that the band and I never hot along well. If they tried to put anything in my band at all I would have episode where I couldn't eat. I worked closely with my doc...whenever could find a good spot for me. About 2.5 years in I developed severe reflux, to the point I was waking up at night refluxing out my nose. Let me tell ya, that is hell. Then I got to where I was having issues drinking again. My band had slipped, my stomach was prolapsed up, I had to have urgent surgery to remove it. I had decided to revise to RNY but had so much damage my doc was unable to do the revision and I was sent home to heal (I had a partial erosion as well). Six months later I had my RNY and physically it's been so much easier. I feel fabulous and I can eat anything (apples, celery, chicken!!! Yay!!!). For me, RNY is the right choice.
  19. It seems like the recommendations for RNY gastric bypass and Duodenal Switch surgery patients appear to be those that my surgeon follows. Supplementation after gastric bypass should include calcium citrate 1,200–1,500 mg/d, which can be taken in 2–3 split doses, 4–5 hours apart for optimal absorption. Minimum Vitamin D intake of 3000 IU/d, titrate to >30 nl/mL. Calcium citrate is preferable to calcium carbonate due to better absorption in the absence or reduction of gastric acid. Supplementation after BPD and BPD/DS should include calcium of 1800–2400 mg/d and minimum Vitamin D 3000 IU/d, titrate to >30 nl/mL. After RNY and Duodenal Switch, there are a lot of Vitamins required daily. The calcium tablets are a major inconvenience because they taste terrible (just like eating chalk), must be spaced apart throughout the day and one has to take so many of them. As a result, I had one individual in our bariatric support group meeting say they were no longer going to take Calciums. I even cut mine back a little. But when I had my annual blood tests, they found I was on the low side and recommended that I take more Calcium. THEY GOT ME. I WAS CAUGHT. So I went back to their required dosage rates. I guess the main point is that after these types of surgery, the requirement to take supplements span for the rest of our lives - PERIOD, NO EXCEPTIONS.
  20. I'm trying to find the right place to post this. I hope I'm right on this one. I am in the process of getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old. I was wondering if anyone has done this before? I am wanting to still breastfeed until he is 1-2 years old. Do you think I can have the surgery and still breastfeed?
  21. I’m a teacher, had the bypass! Please wait until the summer, I know it’s hard but there’s no way I could have returned to teaching 2-3 weeks afterward. Feel free to message me if you have questions
  22. Hi everyone. I am currently on the waiting list for gastric bypass but I'm switching to the lap band. I have no medical problem beside being obese. I feel as though getting the gastric bypass would be more for my vanity then anything else. The lap band makes me feel more comfortable like it's going to help me control my eating. And I was wanting to hear from people who have had it. What is it like? Can you feel your port? Does it hurt when they fill the port every month or how ever often they fill it??? Can your husband fill your port? How much weight are people loosing? And how fast are you loosing it? Any complications people have suffered?? I know it's quite a few questions...but I need knowledge!! I'm 22yrs old 5ft and 217lbs. BMI of 42.2 Thanks so much Ashley

    6 months post-op...reset to goal

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. It's totally understandable to get off track when you are grieving, but good for you for committing to getting back on track and reaching your goal. You have done great! You look so skinny. From that picture, you don't even look like you have 20 pounds to lose! Have you tried chelated iron? It is supposed to be better absorbed by gastric bypass patients, and also easier on the stomach and not cause constipation. I had iron deficiency before surgery, but I've been taking 36 mg of chelated iron per day (plus a multivitamin with 45 mg of ferrous fumarate) and my latest labs were great. This is the chelated iron I take: https://amazon.com/Nutricost-Chelated-Iron-Ferrochel-Capsules/dp/B0792MCYGW
  25. I just had my band revised to a sleeve. I am day 3 post op and soooooo nauseous 🤢 I can barely eat and my belly is so upset. I threw up yesterday, that was awful. Today I managed a few sips of the protein drink and a few sips of water. I feel like I am never going to feel better. Please tell me it gets better Ughhhhh
