3 weeks Post~Op Body Rejecting Protein Drinks
summerseeker replied to Chel1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes. -
Will you always have *that feeling* while eating?
Deep6 replied to Penguin733's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've found different foods to process differently (bypass +hiatal hernia repair, June 6th of this year). My wife made a Bolognese sauce (ground turkey) that went down like it was meant to, and caused no gastro-intestinal distress. @Penguin733, fwiw, I suspect that at 7 weeks, I was just getting into real food. I got religion when I got stopped up, and got the "foamies." Talking to surgeon, and folks here, I was told to measure or weigh. I now know better what I can eat, both in terms of volume and nature of the the food. (FWIW, I had a nice small loin lamb chop tonight and et the whole thing!). Give yourself some time and also recognize that some foods are harder to digest than others; if you look at the surgical procedure that you underwent, you'll understand that there is a stronger filter in place than before; that can help you lose weight. In my case, it also reduced the amount of gastric acid blowing back up my esophagus, which was the driver for me. I've also lost a massive amount of weight in a short time. I respect what this operation can do. -
Will you always have *that feeling* while eating?

Most of us end up with different signals to indicate when we’ve had enough to eat: sneezing, runny nose, heaviness, etc. or restriction. Because we eat more slowly we start to understand our real full signals & not suddenly get to that groaning, stomach stretching, oh my God I’m so full feeling because we are way too much. (It usually takes 20 odd minutes for the real signal you are full to get to your brain.) I try not to eat until I feel full. I ask myself if I need the next bite or just want it. I often pick up the next spoonful & decide nope don’t need it & put it down. Sometimes I’ll have it a few minutes later & sometimes I don’t. But that’s me & how I manage my eating. You may find as you start eating heavier, denser foods your tummy may be more sensitive & signal you more quickly. These foods sit in your tummy longer as they take longer to digest so you will feel your signals a little more quickly than with purees, soft foods & liquids. It’s all part of your healing & recovery. There may be some foods that will always sit more heavily which is just a quirk of your own tummy. For me I found breads, rice & pasta do so I avoid them which isn’t difficult or a loss. I guess I do eat differently only in that I eat more slowly, take smaller bites & generally try to eat more consciously/mindfully in that I pay attention to what & how I eat & not just shovel food in. I appreciate the heaviness I feel & even my restriction (though unpleasant) on the occasions I’m distracted & not paying attention to what & how I’m eating - & we all have those times. -
Post surgery questions
Arabesque replied to Dave-in-TX's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Everyone has questions & it’s not uncommon to be a bit nervous. I mean you’ve never experienced this before so have no reference points. Everyone has differences in their experiences in the first few days after surgery. Just depends on how bodies react. This was my experience. I didn't have any pain bending over or sitting up. A little discomfort maybe but I just moved slowly to ensure I didn’t accidentally damage or strain my abdominal area. I got in & out of bed easily & could sleep on my side with ease straight away. (First night I had a compression machine on my legs so had to sleep on my back.) You’ll be given strong pain meds to manage most of any pain you may have. I took my last one on day 4 but I probably didn’t need it. I didn’t have any gas pain. I didn’t vomit after surgery & I can’t recall any heartburn but I was taking a PPI by day 4. You should be prescribed these as we tend to still produce the same amount of stomach acid as we did for our larger tummy & food intake for a while & the PPI reduces this acid. I did have to spit out excess saliva on day 2 (not vomit). This was because my throat was swollen & irritated from the breathing tube inserted during surgery. I just kept a sick bag beside me and spat into that. Warning - details ahead! I had one sudden & unexpected bout of severe diarrhoea. No warning cramping just ran out of me as I was walking to the bathroom on day 3 I think. It was dark & smelly - blood from the surgery. But that was all. Then the constipation began - lol! (A friend was advised to wear disposable underwear for a week or so just in case this happened. I remember her saying she was glad as wet farts are real.) No change to peeing just more frequent as your fluid intake increases. All the best. PS - I had an extra day in hospital because my back went into spasm not from the surgery as such just from sub consciously holding some stress/tension in my body. -
Hey all. I'm about 4.5 months out from being sleeved at 50 (now 51)and doing really well. I'm down 32.7 kilograms (72 pounds). My BMI is down from 67 to just under 53 and I've lost 21% of my total weight. I'm tolerating all foods fine although rice does sit a bit h3avy. I rarely have it so not a big deal. Hitting protein goals with ease, need to be better with fluids. I can't wait to see where this journey continues to take me!

Unflavored protein powder
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I personally would check out BulkSupplements.com. I've been using their non flavored whey protein isolate, calcium and a few others. Its the easiest absorbed and metabolized at a reasonable price. It was recommended to me by a few professional body builders I know personally. It truly has no flavor, I put it in several of my meals each day. Plus, the company promotes the following which I appreciate (hope this helps also if you subscribe you save although you don't have to): Pure Raw Ingredients No Additives. No flavorings. No Fillers. Just pure, bulk powders FDA Inspected Facility cGMP, FDA registered, regularly inspected manufacturing facility Lab Tested for Purity Each supplement is tested by a 3rd party laboratory Transparency COAs are available for all of their products upon request -
Is this a stall?
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to Dan1131's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm so happy I found this topic, it's a relief! Before finding this topic I just assumed it was my body/metabolism/stomach (I refuse to call it a "pouch" - It's still my stomach) adjusting to pureed/soft food after 5 weeks of liquid. I'm glad to see my instincts were right and the stall is normal! I do understand why people worry though, to go through all this and then not see any movement on the scale the last 10 days after only being post op since August 21 can make anyone anxious. You can know the science behind it, but, its still anxiety causing. Thank you everyone for your wisdom and personal experiences on your weight loss journeys! -
Will you always have *that feeling* while eating?
maintenanceman replied to Penguin733's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same. It's what keeps me from overeating. The downside... well, not really a downside... is that I am always very aware of my sleeve. I spend a lot of time thinking about food and how my stomach will respond to various foods. I never forget that I have a sleeve. That's a good thing overall, but it is something to be mindful of. -
Will you always have *that feeling* while eating?
Penguin733 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I'm near 7 weeks post-op and I was wondering if the feeling in the stomach while eating will forever be present? Sorry if that's vague, but since being let loose with no restrictions I am being consciousness to not take big bites, chewing/eating slowly, and that I need to reintroduce foods, but when I eat I still get a feeling in my stomach like when you eat with an empty stomach and it clunks, something different from feeling full. It's honestly putting me off from eating from time to time and was wondering if there's an end to where I can just eat normally and feel full? As with things I've been already familiarized myself with during recovery (popsicles, steamed veggies, and protein shakes) seem to be not an issue. -
How did you lose the weight to get the surgery?
AmberFL replied to Theia103121's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just went in Tuesday, Weight was 290 and was told needed to lose 15lbs to get to the next step. Once I get there I call to do the next step which I assume is the psychological part of it. So I downloaded MyFitnessPal app and am sticking to 1600 calories, making sure I hit protein and staying with the range of fats, carbs is impossible I ate broccoli and cauliflower and my carbs went over by a ton! So I think no one has gotten fat by eating veggies so I am not going to stress out about that. I weighed myself this morning and I dropped 4.5lbs. I'm sure that is the salt and water weight, but 15lbs seems very attainable. I will start incorporating walks next week since my energy is going up. I have a goal of doing this surgery during my kids winter break so my mindset is pure focus! We can do this!! I am more than happy to be an accountability partner if you need one! -
we all probably have different definitions of what constitutes a "significant" regain or what is considered "quick" in regaining that amount. further to that, we are all different weights and sizes so a regain of 10-15 lbs means very different things to someone who is 100 lbs vs someone who is 150 lbs vs someone who is 200 lbs with that said, i "regained" about 9-ish lbs in about a year starting around 1 year post op. HOWEVER: this was from my lowest weight of 109 around 1 year post op....and i wasn't there long. i "regained" to 115-ish and stayed there for several months, then hung around 118-ish for a couple years. going up or down 3 or so lbs with daily fluctuations, but my moving average stayed basically at the stated weights. i'll be exactly 5 years post op in a few weeks and i have been closer to 120-ish for the past 1-2 years. this morning i weighed in at 116.6 (but this is a bit of an anomaly for me as i recently lost a couple lbs by quitting smoking...but that is another story, ha!) anyway, i feel like i digressed a bit there, but the point i was trying to get to is that in MY experience i am strictly CICO. i gain when i eat more than my maintenance cals*, and i lose when i eat less...and i have 5 years of of My Fitness Pal food logs and body weight measurements to prove it. *i have been operating on a maintenance cals amt of about 1800 a day for a couple years now.

Unable to get enough fluids or protein 5 weeks post-op
Deep6 replied to Jlw1403's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey, @Jlw1403. I had my bypass + hiatal hernia repair on June 6th of this year. The operation went fine, and being on liquid, then pureed, all the various stages, wasn't hard, I just wanted more. I took the supplements (multi + iron, and calcium) but as I progressed now more than 3 months out, I'm less hungry, find a lot of food or the thought of it, almost distasteful, and have to force myself to eat. Drinking liquids is not a problem simply b/c I get dehydrated, especially in the Texas heat. You should talk to your surgeon/dietician and see if there is any physical reason why you are having a problem. I would not do it in an accusatory fashion- more in the "I need help here " vein. I think, from what I've read here, that everyone's experience varies. It's like we all have different sensitivities to certain foods after the surgery, but-at least to me, you should be able to intake the basic minimum-- I was OK with the Max Protein drinks for about 2.5 months- then I found them gag worthy and couldn't digest them. I'm told it's about sips, not guzzling, but still. It is a pretty serious surgery- one that has a ton written about it in the med journals, and pretty safe in terms of outcomes. But tolerance for food and drink is probably very individualized. Get help. You don't have to suffer. -

Im 9 days post op and cannot stomach the flavored/sweet proteins. I bought whey proteins without any fillers or taste, just pure whey, and it mixes very well in water and does not have a taste!! Might be worth looking into it. I'm sorry you are struggling with hunger, this must be pretty hard -
Food Before and After Photos
Tomo replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Everything others have said, and I don't think you need to worry too much about survival on little food. Most WLS patients lose about 65-70% of their excess weight, and it's rare to lose 100%. Also, many have to work very hard not to regain. So fortunately, we do survive very well [emoji3059]. Appetite increases as well as volume capacity as time goes. -
I get in food ruts, I will eat the same thing everyday for 3 weeks because it's easy, and fits the diet... then I just don't want anything. Balancing is definitely a challenge for me.

4 weeks post op! Eating less??
Melaniehealthymom replied to Melaniehealthymom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for the response! I think you are right- the purees and soft foods are just sitting harder and taking longer to digest. And I am still trying to figure out how much is the right amount for me to feel satisfied! I worry about not getting in my protein but I am drinking protein water to help combat days where eating my protein is harder. Thank you for the encouragement and congratulations on how well this surgery has worked for you! Cheers! -

While most of us lose our hunger & desire to eat after surgery, there are odd cases when people don’t. What you could be experiencing is head hunger especially if food was a comfort to you. You’ve had a pretty major surgery, are stressed, likely emotional, & your hormones may be a bit off so wanting to comfort yourself is a pretty common reaction. And because you can’t have food you want it more. In most cases a grumbling tummy does not mean you’re hungry unlike we were always told. The rumbles are usually just your digestive system working. Are you on a PPI to reduce your stomach acid? You’re still making what you used to need which is too much for your much smaller tummy & lower food intake. Excess tummy acid can make you think you’re hungry too. Oh, yes I found the shakes awful too. I diluted one in the morning, sipped it for hours & then relied on soups (bone broths are great but can be salty but cream soups & consommés are fine too) for other meals. You could make your own shake using a unflavoured protein powder & milk, blend a high protein up yoghurt with milk to make a yoghurt drink, etc. you don’t have to have just those pre made shakes. All the best. -
4 weeks post op! Eating less??
Arabesque replied to Melaniehealthymom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, congrats on your surgery & you feeling great. Yay! Secondly you’re still healing & your tummy is still sensitive (it will be for a while). Are you eating purées or soft foods now? If so either are more dense & filling & can sit in your tummy more heavily than just liquids. They take longer to digest & may be contributing to taking you longer to eat or drink. I used to take hours to drink my shakes too & even now at 4 yrs out I take 30-45 mins or even longer to eat a meal. In the beginning I want hungry or interested I eating but knew I had to to get my nutrients in. I didn’t care how long it took as long as I ate. I mean we are told to eat/drink slowly. I still have times when I’m not hungry & can’t eat what is usually my portion size of a meal eat less. Yesterday, for example, I couldn’t eat all my porridge. Popped the leftovers in the fridge, then mixed it with yoghurt & had it for lunch. I wouldn’t worry too much unless you find you’re not meeting your goals for more than a couple of days. Then give your team a call. -
QUICK OVERVIEW: 8 days post-op Gastric sleeve No problem drinking. Not really eating/no appetite. Ok for proteins shakes and electrolytes. Lost 10 pounds in a week Feeling permanently bloated/full despite not eating, and stomach is still swollen/distended. Gas pain went away on day 3. Pain came back in left shoulder, on&off since day 6 No pain whatsoever inside the belly (the actual stomach) since surgery, except today it started. Thought I was maybe hungry so I had a bit of liquid food (as per my plan). Did not help. It's not excrutiating but very uncomfortable pain right in the middle of stomach area. I did a lot more today (walking, errands, etc).... and i had sex yesterday No other symptoms. No fever, no nausea, etc. Could it be a leak?? (Also, I'm anxious naturally)

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who really can't stand artificial sweeteners and Stevia?
Shanna NYC replied to curlygirl74's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Those are the ONLY shakes you can use??? I have tried to get down with them since they are popular and found all over the place including Costco, but I just can't get past the taste. Something about it makes me cringe even at it's coldest and even in coffee. I feel the same about the Ensure Max as well. I can somehow somewhat tolerate the Quest vanilla and just ordered some Pure Protein in chocolate to try it out. -

Hello! I'm a 29 year old woman who just had surgery on the 14th of this month, and it went well. However, I'm absolutely starving, to the point where all I can think of is food! It's driving me crazy. No matter what I'm doing, no matter how I try to distract myself, I can't stop thinking about food, and my stomach is growling constantly. I've been having issues with protein, since I can't seem to stomach the sweet powders, but I did get some in today with some broth. I just don't know how I'm going to make it until next Wednesday, when I'll hopefully be approved for soft foods. Did anyone else experience this? How did you manage? -
Not everyone experiences a bounce back regain. And not everyone experiences a larger regain. If it does happen there’s often a reason: complacency/&or bad habits returning, a too restrictive way of eating, lifestyle changes, medical/health issues, emotional issues, settling of your weight, … I had a regain of a good two kgs (about 5lbs) rather quickly a few months into my second year so earlier than the usual 3rd year. Didn’t gain any more. Wasn’t happy but was accepting it. Couldn’t really put my finger on why. No dietary changes, no activity changes during that time. But what I did have was a gall removal at 25 months which caused an protein absorption issue. Then almost at the three year mark we realised the gall removal also stopped me absorbing my HRT & caused other issues. Went from a tablet to a patch & slowly but surely I lost a good kilo of that regain over 6 months +/-. I’ve been sitting pretty stable again for about 6 months or so. I keep an eye on the scales, monitor my portions, watch my food choice & fingers crossed I continue to remain stable.
-
This is interesting. It seems to me that maintenance for me right now has more to do with metabolic adjustment than straight CICO. I notice that no matter what/how I eat, my weight remains stable. That's not to say that I'm indulging in garbage food, eating large quantities, etc... but my weight doesn't seem to depend strictly on what I'm eating. It seems that my body has arrived at a set point that it's trying to maintain. My weight pre-op was also rock solid stable. No matter what I ate, I hovered around 235 for most of my adult life. I'm curious if the same dynamic will apply to this new weight.

Falling Off The Wagon/Stretching Stomach Question
summerseeker replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some foods are easier to eat than others. We call them slider foods. If you were eating these then they just slide all through. -
It's not just you! I have read that you should avoid the microwave as it dries food out making it harder for your stomach to break down. Its just a matter of how dry the food is, so maybe add a liquid when you can, or cover your items like chicken etc with a damp paper towel?
