  1. Way to go! Depending on your surgeon, the tips given may vary a bit. Mine told me to stop drinking 15 minutes before meals and not to drink for 40 mintues after. You don't want to push the food through or you will feel hungry after. I was also told that I should be completing a meal in 20 minutes. They don't want you to take breaks and space it out because they don't want us to come to close to old "grazing" habits. The hiccups are not uncommon. I still get them sometimes and that's my sign that I likely wasn't paying attention and I ate too fast, swallowing air as well! My stomach growled at lot in the beginning. It was crazy! Sometimes it would wake me up at night. At first I was worried, bu then my dietician and surgeon both told me that our brains associate that with hunger and that's not what it is. It's all the air and your system "adjusting." If I drank more Water, it would usually go away. Now I find that if it's growling and I drink more and keep my mind focused on something else, it stops as well. Best of luck to you!

    Sleeve too big?

Denser protein rich foods will trigger your restriction. Refried beans are more of a slider, and so you can eat more. I can eat about 5-6 ounces of refried beans, but really feel the restriction with 3 1/2 ounces of meat. You are fine. Just continue with your doctor's program.

    Egg drop soup?

EDS is a great post-op food especially in the mushy food stage. I agree, strain it for now. Don't be tempted to pick up the hot and sour soup just now. A former favorite of mine no longer, came back up with a vengence. I still can't eat it, over a year out.

    Shock And Awe

I hope that I don't have to be a year out, 10 pounds under goal, or wearing size 0 jeans to be considered a success, but, by golly, I feel like one. No matter what program I've been on in the past, it took me 6 months to lose 50 pounds. There was no difference between Weight Watchers, medically-supervised fasting, the "crap" band, or PhenFen. 50 pounds equaled 6 months. Well, tomorrow is my 12 weeks, and I'm down 47 pounds. I haven't hit a stall yet (I know that I will). My hair is thinning a bit, but I've been through that before with childbirth and illness. I'm finally into a size 16, as in "off-the-rack" at regular clothing stores. I eat small quantities of healthy food, feel satisfied, and watch not only the scale but my body measurements change, too: From a 39" waist to 35. For many of you, that's still monstrous, but for someone of my age and build, it's amazing. Has it been work? Yes and no. It took awhile to get my regimen together: liquid Vitamins and minerals, enough Protein (usually), enough Water (seldom), remembering my PPI (urp), and giving up high-acid foods and beverages. But it's as if I have the appetite that I was born with. I was a skinny kid, and because of various influences and events, I ballooned at 13. So, I again have that skinny kid's appetite. I don't binge, I stay low-carb, I don't have over-powering cravings for foods, and I'm happy with my new lot in life. Do I have a ways to go? Of course, but how far, I have no idea. I don't know what an optimum weight is for me. I'd love to wear a size 14. A 12? I haven't worn that size since I WAS 12. It's so blasted exciting to see the possibility of a normal body size. I love this sleeve. I love my surgeon. And I love you all for being such wonderful encouragers and examples.
  5. I have hypothyroidism also - was diagnosed during my 6 mo. supervised visits with the sleeve Dr. Once they put me on medicine I started losing better - but I also was taking the medifast diet foods, and bars to help lose some weight before surgery. My BMI was 48 I think when I started this journey. I am on 100 mcg of Levothyroxine a day to control the Thyroid. I was told once you are on Thyroid medicine you will need to stay on it for the rest of your life. After I had lost about 125 lbs. I had my regular doctor check up and he did some bloodwork to check on my Thyroid and they said I should stay on the same dosage I was on. Interesting cuz this was ordered for me when I weighed about 250 lbs. LOLS!! As you can see from my ticker below that it hasn't stopped me from losing the weight though. Hope you have great success with your weightloss journey. Keep us informed. Good Luck to you!!

    Hair Loss

Actually I started taking high quality Vitamins containing a LOT of highly absorbable Biotin and Iron about 2-3 months prior to my surgery. Right after my surgery my hair was the thickest it has ever been BUT at about the 3 month mark my hair also started thinning. I do NOT sell vitamins and have no financial vested interest but I highly recommend Country Life Biotin in 5mg x2 per day or 10mg x1 per day. 10mg is the ABSOLUTE maximum that you should take in a day. You can get Country Life vitamins at Amazon, most Whole Foods, and online at Lucky Vitamin. I also take some Vitron C iron supplement, which you can get at Walmart. It must be taken 2 hours before and after any Calcium intake (calcium interferes with the absorption of iron). How do I know that this all works? Besides my hair growing back, my eyebrows, upper lip, and leg hair are also growing like crazy. So there is a lot of extra tweezing waxing and shaving going on but boy oh boy is it worth it. It is perfectly normal for most folks to have hair loss 3-9 months out. Even with the vitamins that is when my hair thinning was at its worst. Just remember that if your hair doesn't start growing back right away , that doesn't mean its not working. It takes 3 months for just about ANYTHING to have a real effect on your hair. Good luck!
  7. I'm currently 3 weeks post surgery and I'm at the point where I am afraid to eat. Mainly because I don't know about the pain and I don't want to go back to my old ways of eating all the crappy food I used to eat. So now I just don't eat at all really. Today I had a banana and my friend made me eat a grilled chicken wing. I didn't even do my protein the way I should. I'm afraid to eat and fail but I think I'm setting myself up for failure. Any advice?

    One Month Plus

You sound so pumped up..that is great. Congrats on your weight loss thus far. Yes u have good reason to be proud of yourself. I too forget to chew my food to almost nothing. I still eat too fast. Well, I may have slowed down a little, but not enough. It is hard to break old habits. One thing that works for me when I am eating meats is to cut the food into small pieces before I start to eat. That helps with not taking too big of a bite.
  9. I'm about 13 days post op I'm still on my full liquid stage idk if this is gas, or I'm actually hungry...I go to drink water or eat some yogurt but about 30 mins later...that same rumbling its driving me crazy bcuz..I'm craving some solid foods...any body having the same issues!?
  10. I think your girlfriend could be more supportive. I also have been there and done that...with little kids and hectic schedules. It's tough. So, I understand both perspectives a little. That said.... I think you're being flexible...being ok with them eating junk as long as it's not around you. I don't think she's being reasonable expecting you to be around that kinda food....particularly on your pre-op diet....which is very difficult. The way I see it...she can have it one of two ways....you all eat healthier together, or you have a pass to remove yourself when junk food is being consumed. To not allow you to remove yourself from your addiction...is unreasonable in my opinion. And about the kid's diet......if they share your genetics...it's probably best that they don't get into the habit of eating crap. And even if they don't share your genetics....healthy eating habits are learned.
  11. Good morning! I am almost 6 weeks post op. I can get a little hungry, but anytime I try to eat, the food tastes disgusting to me. I am eating on plan. I get my Protein daily, but its from liquids. I just can't stand to eat anything. I cook foods allowed on my diet, and I have to force myself to eat it. Is this normal? Will it get better as I continue to heal? Thanks!

    New to all this!

Welcome. Did your doc/ nut give you a plan to follow post op? If you google puréed foods you will get a ton of good recipes. Ricotta bake is one I like a lot. Homeade soups and broths are a good choice. Yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, chicken, and egg salad also.

    Stalled at 6 weeks

Certainly check all the posts using the Search function. That said, what's your calorie intake vs output. How's your water intake? Are you following the diet you are supposed to be or are you off doing your own thing? Are you tracking your food intakes? Don't forget that you could be losing fat and not losing "weight" as odd as that sounds, there are so many times that I'd drop fat % but not a single oz. Just keep doing what you are supposed to, max out on the water (128oz if possible) and focus on lean meats and veggies.

    fills not working

I have a 4.0 cc band. I have had 3 fills and I am now at 3.4 cc's. The flouro always shows the fluid going through very slowly, but by the time I go back on regular foods I have no restriction. I am starting to worry that even with 4.0 cc's in my band I won't have restriction. I am also worried that my band may be eroding? I just started worrying about that after reading all of these posts!
  15. Hey guys, newbie here! Anyways I just had my surgery on the 21st of June with my best friend. It was a last min thing (probably not the best idea) but surgery went great even with little to no clear liquid diet before surgery. We both had our days were one of us feels like crap and the other is in a good mood being a great support person. But it's just really depressing because we can't eat the foods we love and we both know its all in our heads. Im here basically right now trying to find amazing recipes we could cook up when we get to have puree foods. Im really just wanting to eat mashed potatoes right now because broth and jello is honestly getting old. We should be good to start puree kind of foods on the 28th. So if anyone has recipes or could link me that would be amazing! Thank you guys!
  16. So personally I don't think you are asking too much at all. When my mom and I went on a liquid diet to lose weight, it was hard because we were trying to make this HUGE lifestyle change while the other half of our family carried on as though it wasn't a big deal. Which, looking back, hindered the progress we made. Because if your family is not supporting you by still going to fast food restaurants while you are there and not empathizing with you and your struggle, what's to stop you from easing into old habits. That's not to say tell them to stop altogether, at least not at this point, but asking them to be more considerate and maybe let you know if they are going to a fast food place so you can opt out. I've also been on the side where I wasn't dieting and my some in my family were. I made the accommodations because I loved them and wanted to support them on this journey to be the most successful they could be. If it meant not eating taco bell in front of them I gladly did it, because I stood by my support of them. I think you should have a talk with her and just explain how you need to be supported to have the best possible success because maybe she doesn't see her actions as unsupportive. Also if the whole family is trying to eat healthier why is is she going to a fast food joint anyway. I think you guys should probably sit down and have the talk again so as to clear the air and pave the way for a healthier life.

    Restriction?

I feel the same way. I was put on soft food (1/4 cup) 1 week out. I stop at 1/4 cup but I am also worried because I do not feel any restriction either.

    Post op...Food question

Thanks for all the good ideas! I made potato soup tonight for the family and just blended some for me. It was great!! They were happy because it was the first time I'd cooked since surgery. My doc's instructions say we can start mushies on day 8; cottage cheese, eggs, thin deli sliced chicken & turkey, mashed potatoes & oatmeal to name a few. I can also have baked fish & tuna at this time. So I think I'll be ok. I set aside enough blended potato soup for tomorrow's lunch and dinner. I am just so happy to eat something that tastes like food. I love the Peanut Butter & banana idea! Bananas aren't on my list until day 23, but I seem to be tolerating things ok...so I may try it a little earlier, but not much! My hubby got worried because I wasn't eating anything...he said something was better than nothing and was encouraging me to try some other stuff. But I'm trying to stick semi-close to the guidelines. I have a family birthday party coming up for my kids in about 2 weeks and they are wanting Mexican food. I've already started planning out what I can eat by then without being very obvious to everyone. My mom is still under the impression that as soon as I lose the weight, I need to have the band removed. My hubby & I both have repeatedly explained to her that it doesn't work that way, but she just shakes her head. I know it's going to be a point of argument with her for lots of time to come. Thanks again ladies!
  19. I have been feeling stressed about a few things for about two weeks. I'm 3 months into my journey with the sleeve and today I nibbled on some really bad foods. I should have gone walking during my lunch but the weather was too cold. What do you do when you are stressed?

    Week 10 Post Op

It's not unusual. If you can handle/tolerate protein shakes, then find some very high protein ones (I am partial to the Premier Protein 30g premade protein shakes, but to each their own). If you can get to the place where you drink two shakes per day that get you to your protein goal, then you can get through the days that you aren't that hungry. On most mornings, I mix a 30g Premier Protein vanilla premade shake with two scoops of Chike protein coffee (20g protein). Then I get 50g of protein in a 16 oz drink. Find ways to maximize protein in the smallest amount of food.
  21. I have my first fill on July 21st with the surgeons assistant. I'm on the mushy/soft foods and I don't see my dietician until July 31st. I'm assuming I won't start solids until after I see her. I know every Dr is diffrerent but I was was wondering if it's normal to start solids after the first fill?

    Scared to eat!!!

Yes, that fear will pass. I felt the same way for a long time, and now I have to force myself to remember to take small bites, and chew well. I've never had a stuck episode, or PBs, but sometimes I don't pay close attention, and realize that I'm veering off track. FYI, I also started on ground turkey with refried Beans. I didn't puree it, but I took tiny bites and chewed to a pulp. To this day, over five months later, it's still one of my favorite "band-friendly" meals. I make it at least once a week.

    Scared to eat!!!

Been stuck twice so far and it's not the end of the world, but like sojourner said it does teach a lesson which a stone cold food junkie like myself needs! I was so glad I could eat at any of the early levels mushy were great after liquids, and soft food made mushy forgettable and so on!

    Nay Sayers

Not enough long term data to suggest stretching is significant. Get the sleeve, measure 1/2 cup food a meal, keep your calories logged-never go over a healthy amount, and you will do just fine.
  25. Ok, I'm putting this in my folder of posts I have read with this exact same line...........And I'm gonna have to get a bigger folder. Relax.......this is a long haul. Your body is really pissed off. You hacked it all up and deprived it of food and it is just trying to show you who's boss. It will give up soon and let go of the weight and you'll be on the road to a skinnier you like the rest of us. Oh, and one more thing. That same body will not give up with just one fight......It's gonna keep trying over and over to hang on to the remaining weight (stalls) and make you give up and feed it. Don't give in...........Hang in there and you'll make it to your goal.
