  1. So I haven't been on here for a while but had to share with others my experiences with the gastric sleeve. I had my surgery on April 12, 2016 the first 6-8 weeks it was going great some vomiting here and there while getting used to the new ways of life. Then the now and then became more and more frequent til I was vomiting daily. I this was not right so I had a long talk with the doctor he told me he was thinking i had a kink in the sleeve and sent me to a gastroenterologist. This doctor was sure it was a kink and scheduled me for a Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD on August 12, 2016. The EGD went well for about 2 weeks than slowly I started vomiting again more and more, back to the doctor then to get another EGD on October 20, 2016. This time it seemed to do the job by the end of January I was doing good than the beginning of February the vomiting started again back to the doctor and April 25, 2017 EGD #3. I knew it linked again by may but I was sick of it so I decided to stick it out, BAD MOVE on July 27, 2017 I was rushed to the emergency room with Severe dehydration because I couldn't keep anything even ice down. July 29,2017 EGD #4. After that one I could tell it wasn't going to be long be i was back there and i was right November 8, 2017 I went in for EGD #5. After that last one it was a 100% different feeling not for the good but I pushed through and waited it out. I went in for my 2 year post OP appointment on April 10, 2018 (2 days before my 2 year) and doc was not happy to hear I am scheduled for my 6th EGD on May 10, 2018 so after looking at my labs and my upper GI from January I was told that my body is basically like rejecting my sleeve and my new lifestyle I have to live. So now i am waiting for a call from the doctor to start my new journey of having a gastric bypass done on my sleeve (revision) before I could think of what I should say I started crying and repeating "Why on earth did I do this to myself. I regret ever having this damn surgery". She calmed me as much as she could and now I'm waiting for this all to begin. When I was 18 months post OP my OBGYN gave me the go ahead to try for a baby. We decided to wait a little longer because he was working out of state. Now that he's back and we want to start a family I am told that I can't for another couple years. My life is crumbling and I am so disappointed that I can't start the family my boyfriend wants I'm even considering telling him to leave me and find someone that isn't a broken mess.

    Dec. 5th surgery date

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend... All I can say is that I knew someone that died of the same complications and I still went thru with my band. Today is exactly one week since my surgery and I feel great. The Dr. said no lifting for 30 days... but I have been holding my 20 pound baby and doing just fine. I would not tell anybody about it if you are worried about them saying stuff. Only my husband, mom and mother in law know about me and that is only because I needed a little help with the baby. Well, I take it back... some folks at work know about it, but they have had it done. If you want to be healthy and YOU are ready for surgery I think you should do it. That is great that your husband is supportive. Gastric bypass is a completely different story from banding, just as you said. Good Luck and let us know. By the way from what I have read all Dr.'s are different with diets. I was on a low carb (that I didn't follow) before surgery. After surgery I had 48 hours of liquids and now I am on mushies for 4 weeks. No PROBLEM. I am doing EXACTLY as my Dr. says. I have already lost 17 pounds!!! (yep, in 1 week)
  4. I hate cooking - with a passion! Complicate things with a busy lifestyle, and it was always about fast-food or prepared foods. (Clearly, it's one of the reasons I ended up this way.) I have to learn to fix things on my on at home. Any good WSL cookbooks you could recommend that focuses on very simple and fast recipes? Thanks! ICanDoThisVA

    So bummed

That is the plan. I've had my band unfilled for about 2 months so hopefully as long as there are no hidden complications they can do both at once.

    The Band isn't working?

Lauraann, you need to have your band checked for complications. If there's no saline in it and you're still getting food stuck, but you're not losing, something is possibly wrong. The band is plastic, hon. It's highly unlikely it'll shrink like a worsted wool sweater. I've just had my bandiversary, and I still throw up but I know why every time. I've eaten something I shouldn't, like bread or stringy meat. That's why my doc continues to monitor his patients. His low carb diet is not easy, especially with all the temptations presented in our modern society. I threw up today, but I knew I ate that stuffed portobella mushroom too fast. My fault, not the band's. Have your band checked and take a serious look at your food intake. Keep a food journal and mark down honestly how much you ate, what you ate, calories, proteins and carbs. Your nutritionist may be the really strict kind like mine. Then again, s/he may not be. Why not have the data for them in case they ask? Time for some serious analysis with your surgeon and his team of experts. Think of it not as going before a judge like a criminal, but like a seeker going before the guru.
  7. What kind of problems? People generally don't get long-term complications from sleeves. It's not like RnY where people get reactive hypoglycemia and have to have part of their pancreas removed to fix it or get ulcers from the surgery that have to be treated. It's even very unlikely that the sleeve would stretch enough to require a fix. If you mean, what if I don't lose all the weight, it would depend on how little I had lost. If I was 10-20 lb more than I wanted to be, I'd lump it. If it was a significant amount, I would get some kind of intestinal bypass, either RnY or DS. I don't know which one because I haven't looked into the nitty gritty details of either. I'd probably go for a DS but I'm not sure I could eat enough fat to make it work. (I don't like greasy food.) I doubt I would put a band over it because the odds are just too high that I'd have to have yet another surgery to remove it some day and be right back where I started. Plus, the only thing a band would fix is if the sleeve had somehow stretched and was too big and you can fix that by having it tightened instead. Not to mention it rarely happens -- you really have to abuse the thing to get it to stretch. I don't know where you heard that people are putting bands over VSG. I don't know anyone who has done that -- it really hasn't been around long enough to know a lot of people who had revisions. Most VSGers will get a DS if they have inadequate weight loss because they figure they need the malabsorption after all. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  8. My surgery is in a month. I started preparing a month ago. I have not cheated once. I had a last splurge the weekend before I started preparing for surgery. I honestly made myself miserable because of eating so much crap. The thought that kept going through my mind - was the food really that important? Did it really fix anything for me? The answer is no. I'm sick of food having a hold of me. I'm done. My other issue is the fear of complications from surgery. I want to have the best chance I can of a zero issue surgery. So given your situation where you wanted "Chinese", I would have had like teriyaki chicken with steamed vegetables. Or Mexican, have chicken fajita with the peppers and onions and salsa and skip the beans and rice. That's my new attitude. I'm still getting food I enjoy minus a couple items. And the high protein has stopped my cravings. Hang in there. Ask why you are doing this and is it really worth it.
  9. My insurance payed for everthing when i got home and had complications. if they cover some kind of weightloss then most likely they will cover the bill. nikki
  10. It really does depend on your policy... some might cover complications even if they didn't cover the surgery -- most don't, it seems. My policy specifically excluded anything related to weight loss, including surgery, AND including any complications resulting from bariatric surgery. Call your insurance company and see what they tell you to be sure!

  14. Hi, I'm 4 weeks out from having the sleeve done in Mexico. I have lost over 30 lbs. With the sleeve there is virtually no aftercare, so I did not have a problem going to Mexico. The only aftercare required with the sleeve is followup lab work. I also think that some people confuse the sleeve with gastric banding, and some of the other surgeries. Complications with the sleeve are rare and there is no mal-absorption. Basically your digestion stays the same, you just have a smaller stomach. I'm so glad that I did this! Thanks for letting me throw in my 2 cents! __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  15. The OP and I were sleeved on the same day so I'm just over 5 months also. I didn't have any complications with my surgery, but the first few weeks were a bit of a struggle energy wise for me. Everything took so much out of me. Taking a shower, grocery shopping, cleaning my house, walking around at work. I was SO glad when i started feeling like myself again! I haven't had any issues with tolerating food. I fall into the "sleeve of steel" category. LOL! I'm down 83 pounds, all post op weight loss. I feel SO much better with this weight off! I still have a way to go, but I feel amazing! Sent from my iPhone using VST
  16. Hello all! I was sleeved 9/3! Yay! Surgery went without complications! Praise the Lord! I know I am being impatient, but when I got home I weighed myself and was 10 pounds heavier! For those that have been in my shoes, how long before you start to notice a change? How long before the swelling goes down? I have been following the diet to the T and have been drinking my water. I am so excited to continue working on new me!
  17. Sun Godess, As others have said complications occur even with the most qualified doctors. IMO, I would be more concerned with your heartburn issue and what this new doctor has to say about it. It is my understanding that heartburn can worsen with the sleeve if you already have it with the band. I was revised from band to sleeve and never knew what GERD was until now, which is another chance we take. I take Prilosec which is a PPI drug to control my heartburn and as you probably already know, there are concerns with long term use of PPI's. Just some things to discuss with him if you have not already done so. jake
  18. So...I have a lap band. I never got to the "green zone" or optimal restriction, just increased unbearable heartburn with additional fills. I have insurance, and kind of fell into the revision process this December. My insurance requires the repeat of the 6 mos diet process again to submit for a revision to sleeve. I do not want to wait and take the chance of ultimately being denied. So, I have scheduled a revision with Dr. Illan in a few weeks. Everything is all set up. I told my lap band surgeon a couple weeks ago at my last appt. He seemed concerned but understood. This morning I got a personal call from my lap band surgeon. He said his partner was in surgery as we spoke trying to fix a leak from a patient who had a sleeve done in Mexico. He said he was not trying to scare me, because he understands that I have to do what I have to do. He was just warning me that they see this regularly. He did not know the doctor or anything. So, I feel that I have done a good job, but am worrying now about the what if's due to it being a "revision" surgery of lap band to sleeve, and the possibility of a leak. It is scaring me now, and whether they REALLY REALLY REALLY check thoroughly before closing you up! I know they do leak tests during and after, but then how does someone get home and then have a leak!?!?! He did say, yes, it can happen to anybody. I am just wondering, scared and slightly second guessing. I can't afford to get back home and have complications and be in the hospital! I have found one band to sleeve patient on here who went to Dr. Illan. I have heard all glowing reviews. I have phone conferenced with Dr. Illan and feel good. I don't want fear to hold me back. I don't want to wait until July/August to hope to have surgery and maybe be denied because there "technically" is no mechanical error with my band. I am ready to move on and find success NOW beginning of April, be several pounds down by summer, all healed up, and moving on with my life...not to mention over this heartburn! Any words of wisdom and experience...especially of band to sleeve revisions would be greatly appreciated!
  19. I worry about those too, but not just because of going to Mexico. Complications happen in the US too, and sometimes complications happen from patients not following proper post op care. If you Google or even look through the message boards here there are all kinds of stories of complications right here in the US because this surgery is not risk free. No surgery is. A young guy I went to college with just died from a routine outpatient gallbladder removal! I've been researching doctors for over a year now and for me it always comes back to Dr. Illan. Now that he partnered with BariatricPal and they've vetted him, that just sealed the deal for me that he is one of the best Bariatric surgeons in Tijuana. And I would bet he would rank highly among Bariatric surgeons world wide. I also feel more at ease having 4 days of monitored post op care. Here in the US you get discharged from the hospital after 24 hours and I feel like you're kind of on your own until your 1-2 week checkup.
  20. Hi I just had my sleeve done 9 days ago. I had a few complications and just wanted to know who else went through it. At this moment am really in the regret stage. As within 2 days of going home I had to go to the er because I was deshidrated very nauseated couldn’t even put anything in my mouth every smell in my own home bothers me , I hired a cleaning lady to come deep clean my house. At the hospital they also notice I had a uti. I was there 5 hours thank god no leaking ect. So I go home for one day still can’t barely drink the broth(which I hate) next day back to the er. I was on two ivs at the same time and a nutrient one from the pharmacy recommendations of my biariatric physician. I came home and two days late I was able to drink 3 oz of chicken broth and some protein shake that day only took me 2 hours each time. At night my stomach hurt and it feels like am hungry at the same time but when I do drink even water feels like I drank quarters and I feel discomfort the whole night. Mind you still can’t sleep on my belly as it’s my only position I can rest in. When will I feel normal again ? Like not feeling the heavy feeling in my stomach when I eat? Or the hunger pains ,Help !!!

    I'm so mad!

Awww Patti. Don't let this get you down. All things happen for a reason, and delays in things like this could be there to save your life! I know that Dody has gone through several disappointing events that have caused her surgery to be delayed (knee injury, bad flu, insurance complications, etc). Lo and behold, they just recently found out that she has some serious artery blockage that could have killed her had she had the surgery done without that first being repaired! Thank God for those delays! I don't know anything about the "abt" stuff. Why don't you give your Dr a call tomorrow and get more information about it. That way you'll not just be getting information about "abt" but about your specific situation with it. Hang in there.. everything will work out just as it's supposed to. *hugs*
  22. Hi all. I had my sleeve surgery on 8/13. I've had no real complications (minus constipation). I did hit a major stall (17 days) about 10 days post op. Since then I've lost about another 4lbs, making for a total of 23lbs lost in 5 1/2 weeks. I'm stalled again. I did have a surgeon's appointment and before I even brought up the stalls he said he wanted to mention something to me. He asked if I had been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome. I said no and he said that when he saw inside of my body my fat distribution was consistent with those with Metabolic Syndrome and said he has no doubt that I would have been diagnosed soon without surgery. I asked him what that even meant. He said I would probably lose weight more slowly because it was resilient fat that did NOT want to come off, but once it came off the other fat would start "melting off". When I got home I looked up Metabolic Syndrome. I do sometimes have high blood pressure if I eat high sodium foods, but have never had high blood sugar or triglycerides or any other risk factor. Wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how slow is slow on weight loss? I don't want to make an excuse for slow weight loss or all these stalls and get complacent. Is it possible this surgery will fail because of this? I'm so nervous now and have a million questions I never thought to ask.
  23. Hello everybody! I have just moved my profile over from Lapband Talk to VSGTalk! I am so excited to be here! I had LapBand in Nov, 2009. I started at 297lbs - my highest weight ever. Optifast brought me down to 290 for surgery day. I was not very successful for the first 6 months or so, but once we found the right restriction, weight started dropping. For about a year, I lost steadily. I got remarried, ran my first 5K, got down to 204 pounds... the lowest I've ever been since weighing in at 199 in 8th grade PE! Then the trouble started. After going for a barium swallow for my Crohn's (no complications were occuring, just routine test), the technician thought my band was too tight. Why? Because at 7:30 in the morning, thick, nasty barium wouldn't go through my band fast enough for the test. So he called my LapBand dr and advised I have Fluid removed immediately. So I did. And from that point forward, over the next 6 months, I had fills and unfills because my band was sooooo finicky after messing with it. I began vomiting bile and acid every. single. night. I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air and nearly drowning in stomach acid. After about a month, my husband made me go to the doctor. They diagnosed a slip and removed all fluid in March 2012. They waited with hopes it would reposition on its own, but in August 2012 decided to have another surgery to reposition or replace the LapBand. When I woke up from surgery, I was told they had to remove it. The swelling was so bad, they couldn't move the one already there, but had to cut it out and would not attempt to put a new one in. In the meantime, my employer (and insurance) had changed. So it was a fight to get them to approve a VSG. But they did. After nutritionist appointments - again. And more classes - again. And even a visit to the shrink - again. They approved it. I am scheudle for VSG December 4, 2012. I CAN NOT WAIT to start living again. I have gained 60 pounds since the band was deflated and I can't stand the way I feel. Overstuffed in jeans (refuse to buy more). Out of breath at the top of stairs. Aches and pains and exhaustion again. I am so glad to be here and can't wait to get started!
  24. I am so there with you! I lost 80 pounds fairly "easily" but for almost a year I have lost nothing. I, too, am lazy and don't want to exercise! I am so tired from work, have major insomnia that nothing seems to help, and just feel like I can’t find the energy to even start. I am terrified that I am going to gain the weight I lost back and I really couldn’t handle that. Only 4 days ago a close friend who was only 2 years older than me died from complications of gastric bypass surgery. She was 47 and now she is gone. My emotions about what is going on with me are now clouded even further by feelings of guilt that I should feel happy and grateful about where I am and that I am healthy and have no complications. But I still cannot shake being unhappy that I am stuck and can’t seem to be able work my way out of this.

    Im Pregnant!!!

Many congrats on the pregnancy ! ! ! The main issues is that you can NOT continue to eat low carb. Ketosis causes fetal brain damage so GO EAT A SANDWICH, if you are still low carbing it. Honestly, VSG has not complicated my pregnancy. The biggest challenge has been the inevitable weight gain, but you might not have as much as I have. I've gained a solid 20lbs at 29 weeks pregnant and even though that is perfectly on target, it's mindbending for me to gain weight. I have struggled with the physical changes, my ever expanding belly, and the fact that I'm 34 doesn't help! This is also my 2nd pregnancy, and higher numbers on the scale are expected with a 2nd pregnancy. So, my recommendation is to get to your ob, you shouldn't have to take any additional Vitamins, but make sure they monitor your B12 and Folate on a regular basis. If you aren't taking anything, start now. Folic acid and B12, Iron are the ones we need the most. My labs have remained stellar through my pregnancy. All you'll need is a prenatal with a sublingual b12. If you have worked out through your journey, keep working out. I admittedly didn't work out, and haven't in the pregnancy. I know that has contributed to my weight gain. Depending on your starting pregnancy weight, will determine your pregnancy calorie/protein/carb goals. I'm to eat 1700-1800 calories, 100gr of Protein 100gr of carbs, and 100oz of clear fluids per day. Yes, it's challenging, and I drink some calorie-filled drinks because I simply can not eat all my calories. Grape juice helps tremendously. Again, many congrats, and if you need anything, feel free to shoot me a message!
