    Terrified

Im 2 weeks out from surgery and things are going good for now, but I know that eventually Im going to have to start introducing and incorporating real food back into my diet and my calorie intake is going to get higher, I'm just terrified that once I do that even of its 4-500 calories my weight is going skyrocket! Has any one experienced weight gain durring their transitional phases? How did it work out? Did you have to start hitting the gym daily to continue loosing? Can you please share your stories. Thank u
  2. Yea I know I use a lot more dressing than a serving or two if I don’t measure it. I mostly use the spray pam for cooking but dressing is high calorie too so it adds up quick. If you haven’t tried pam you should try it. You don’t get the oil flavor of course but I have totally gotten used to it now and use it for everything.
  3. I agree that it’s not really self sabotage unless you actually intended to harm or sabotage yourself. Don’t beat yourself up, Just try to learn from your mistake and do better today. Have you tried searching for a sugar free or no sugar added alternative? I have found Many sugar free or no sugar added options out there that honestly don’t taste bad. I had sleeve so I don’t have issues with sugar, but I found Yasso Greek yogurt bars that are only 100 calories and satisfy my sweet cravings. They do have some sugar 13g total and 9g added sugars? I am pretty sure that’s quite a bit LESS than regular ice cream though. I don’t have any ice cream to compare it to. Okay I just searched Walmart real quick and it is less than regular ice cream but Klondike makes no sugar added desert bars that have even less. 6g of sugar per bar (11g of sugar alcohol. I’m not sure how that plays into it). Also, Bryers makes no sugar added with 5g sugar and 10g sugar alcohol (salted caramel flavor). I personally like the idea of the bars cause it’s already portioned out for us. Most but Not all products have the nutrition info online so a little research and hopefully you can find an option that will work for you. If you live near a Publix I have found that they tend to carry a wider variety and have more of the healthier options (compared to walmart). Trader Joe’s and Aldi are supposed to be good for healthy options too but I don’t have either of those I am, of course, not advocating that you eat ice cream this early out but i will admit that I tried a few treats just to see if I could eat them once I got to regular food such as chocolate, pizza and pasta. For me it was a mindset thing. Once I knew I could tolerate them in small amounts and eventually have them later it was that much easier to do without them until maintenance. Everyone is different though. All we can do is what we think is best for us. I hope this helps
  4. Pre surgery I never measured it but when Calorie counting I measure everything. And salad dressing I have been measuring in those little one ounce cups because one ounce is two tablespoons which is one serving but I thought maybe the bottle would be easier. If I don’t get an answer here I’m thinking for 9 bucks it’s worth a try.
  5. Interesting. I have never really measured olive oil lol. I know it has lots of calories but its a healthy thing to have (obviously not a bunch) I cook with it and cover my meats with it before adding seasoning.
  6. We got a holiday long weekend up here ourselves! (Canada Day is July 1st) Having a tomato feta salad (with almonds and balsamic glaze) out back in the gorgeous sunny day sunny day 😎 226 calories

    Transitioning from shakes to food

I joyfully kissed all my shakes away on day one week three. It was always my goal to rely on real food to get all my nutrients in & not depend upon supplements or meal replacements. My surgeon was also okay if I was not hitting my protein goal while going through the first stages as long as I was making an effort so that took off some pressure. But as @ShoppGirl said it does depend upon how much you can eat. (I wasn’t able to eat much but usually hit 40-50g of my 60g protein goal.) I found a good high protein yoghurt (15-20g) & a yoghurt smoothie (22-30g) to keep my protein closer to goal. I also did things like make my scrambled eggs & rolled oats extra milky to get in a little more protein. But being lactose intolerant I realise this isn’t quite as easy for you. Were you given a caloric goal or a recommended carb intake or limit? How many extra carbs or calories are you getting in by consuming lactose free/dairy alternative products? Because we eat so little it would take a lot to really have a negative impact on your weight loss. I drink a lactose free milk because I can’t drink a lot of ordinary milk. (No issue with other dairy though.) And even though it has about double the calories, it didn’t have an impact on my weight loss. Milk alternatives can actually have fewer calories than cows milk (per 100mls): Full cream cow’s milk – 281 kilojoules (67 calories) Rice milk – 255 kilojoules (61 calories) Regular soy milk – 241 kilojoules (58 calories) Oat milk – 213 kilojoules (51 calories) Reduced-fat cow’s milk – 191 kilojoules (46 calories) Reduced-fat soy milk – 153 kilojoules (37 calories) Skim cow’s milk – 142 kilojoules (34 calories) Sweetened almond milk – 123 kilojoules (29 calories) Sweetened cashew milk – 123 kilojoules (29 calories) Coconut milk – 95 kilojoules (23 calories) Unsweetened cashew milk – 73 kilojoules (18 calories) Unsweetened almond milk – 69 kilojoules (16 calories) Same with carb content. Macadamia milk: 1 gram of carbs/cup Hemp milk: 1.3 grams of carbs/cup Soy milk: 1.6 grams of carbs/cup Almond milk: 1.99 grams of carbs/cup Flax milk: 2 grams of carbs/cup Coconut milk: 3.38 grams of carbs/cup Oat milk: 9 grams of carbs/cup cows milk: 12grams of carbs/cup Have a chat with your dietician. They should be able to recommend lower calorie or lower carb alternatives if your intake is excessive for you to try. PS - Stalls rarely have anything to do with the calories or carbs you are consuming but are a natural part of your weight loss journey. Your rate of loss is never constant but zigs & zags, ups & downs & plateaus. Your body stalls or takes a pause (as I heard a surgeon say recently) to catch up with the changes - surgery, weight loss, change in diet or activity, etc. Think of it as your body is stressed & it needs time to recover & accept the changes. Just like you do if emotionally or mentally stressed.

    Having fun working out...WHAT?!?!?!

Great job! One suggestion that I’d say is that during your treadmill time, start doing intervals. It doesn’t have to be drastic, but you’ll burn calories longer (after workout) by doing them. You are trying to get your heart to about 70-85% of max during the interval. Not sure if your age, but for 35 y/o that’s about 130-157. When I first started my base speed and incline was 3.0mph and an incline of 3. I’d stay there for about 3 minutes and then push my speed to 3.5 and incline to 6 for 30 seconds. As I got stronger, I’d increase the time I spent at the higher speed/incline until I was at a minute.
  9. Question??? How did you transition from mostly using shakes to getting your protein from food sources? I started really tracking what I am eating due to my 3 week stall. I'm noticing that due to my milk allergy that most of the shakes and yogurts I eat are a bit higher in carbs and calories than I would like and noticed I am more reliant on the shakes than food to get my protein in. How hard was the transition? Should I gradually start eliminating the shakes? Thanks for any info you could share.
  10. Sous vide filet mignon and air-fried asparagus. Sous vide is the way to go for steak! Perfect medium-rare all the way through, and just pan-seared the outside. Not pictured: chimichurri sauce (but the steak was so good, it didn't even need any sauce). Nutrition information for filet mignon is all over the place. I'm seeing anything from 170 to 300+ calories for a 4-ounce filet mignon in MFP.

    Potatoes?

I avoid them. I'm almost 9 weeks out, and I know that they can add a lot of carbs and calories (I like fries with ketchup, mashed potatoes with butter, cheese, and salt, and baked potatoes with butter, sour cream, and salt). I do like the skins, as well, but my dietician said no potatoes for the first 3 months, then only once per day and a very small amount, with none of that extra stuff on it. I can't eat plain potatoes, so I just stay away from them.

    Stall out and depressed

First of all, you have done amazing in your weight loss, and you're only 29 lbs. away from goal. The closer the goal, the longer the "stalls". As long as you're eating at a calorie deficit, be assured that you are losing weight, it just isn't showing up on your scale yet. You are 6 ft. tall, and I don't believe 1300 calories is even close to your maintenance required calories so your stall will break and you'll get a big drop. For some reason, my body is somewhat like this. For myself, I don't lose for 3 weeks almost every month but then I get a big drop. One of the ways that I get comfort is looking over my food log, the amount of calories I had day by day, week to week... Etc. and I have to remind myself that there is no way that I could stay the same or gain weight on the amount of calories I'm consuming. Our minds love playing those games on us.

    Stall

Totally agree with Arabesque and Catwoman. You've lost 38lbs in 2 months. This is already astounding weight loss. You are ON THIS. Stick to your programme, don't stress about mixing things up just for the sake of it, and you will totally smash this. 800-1000 calories sounds spot on for this stage of your journey.

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op

Thank you all ! I called and spoke to nurse. She said I should be doing no more than 400- 600 calories but what I told her I ate she didn't seem too concerned. I can't imagine eating less at this point unless I dropped back down to liquids only. Its INSANE how even the good food im eating is adding up calories so fast!
  18. I only eat pasta when Mr makes it, so since today he made spaghetti with pasta from a bag, i paired his meat sauce with 1/2 a bagel instead. 247 calories, had I eaten everything…which i did not, as the pairing was not as delicious as i thought it would be…tossed the rest cuz no one in the fam was interested in the leftovers.

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

It may not be for everyone (or u) but tracking everything i ate in REAL TIME I honestly believe helped me stick to plan. Seeing the number of calories i’ve racked up in black and white has, on multiple occasions, stopped me from eating more…also contributed to making food choices to go in line with my macro goals for any given day. I still track today (3.5+ years out), and it still helps to keep me from porking out (most times, at least…as i allow myself a good pork out on occasion now lol)

    June 2022 surgery buddies

So for my surgeon, we are on clear liquids for the first 9 days post op-followed by two weeks of full liquid. Calories the first week are slim to none. I was lucky if I got in 200-300 calories a day. He encourage walking often, but actually going out to walk for the purpose of exercise isn’t encouraged beyond 15-with p minutes a day. Today started my first day of full liquids, so I’m at 300 calories and 60 grams of protein currently. I’ll probably do some type of soup for dinner, so I won’t get much more protein.

    Potatoes?

I’m sorry if that seemed offensive or something. I just honestly had no clue the calories were so high and thought I would share it with you in case you didn’t either.

    Potatoes?

Just be careful with the pork ribs as you are able to eat larger servings. I recently learned just a half rack of ribs was like 688 calories and 45 grams of fat BEFORE the sauce. And that’s baby back which are the leanest cut. The same amount of chicken breast is 190 calories. Ignore if you already knew this but I had no clue and was totally floored by the calorie and fat content.

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op

Always consult with your surgeon and dietician. My plan does not have any mention of calories in the soft food stage which I'm guessing you're in. Just making sure I get the protein and the water, avoiding foods that are still problematic and learning how to properly read my body including not eating to the point of feeling full. If I were doing all that and consuming 800 calories a day (especially being the 400 pound male I am), I think they'd be thrilled!

Plans vary a huge amount in how many calories they want you to eat at what point. Ask your surgery center what they recommend, but it doesn't seem like a lot to me...

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op

*** I had Bypass, so it may be different*** At 1 month post op, my plan was to eat 400-600 calories a day. Then the next phase it increased to 500-800 calories. Once I was eating "normal" foods again I stay at 800-1000 until I hit maintenance. I am just over 3 months post op and on normal foods and a normal balanced diet and eat about 600-800 calories a day. I was worried I was not eating enough but my Dietician reviewed my food diaries and said I am doing perfect, not to worry about not hitting the calories as long as I am meeting my protein and fluids goals. From what you listed I do not think it is too much food as long as you are comfortable and not over eating or feeling stuffed. They are all low fat healthy proteins! Good job!
