September 2023 Surgery buddies
tiffanyb12211 replied to Breaking notsobad's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date is 9/25 and I’m getting the gastric sleeve. I had my work up appointment this past Monday where they went over everything, explained the pre-op diet etc. Now that it’s September I’m getting nervous, but I’m also excited. My pre-op diet starts on the 10th in which I have to have a protein shake for breakfast and lunch and then I can have some chicken or fish and a veggie for dinner. Ugh this is going to be hard. Did anyone have last supper syndrome before they had to start the pre op? -

On my 4th day of the liquid diet, it's getting easier not to want to devour everything within reach. Tired of sweets though had to go get some bone broth to break up the monotony. I just got my proteins I ordered from here today so yay for some variety. Must say that the Bariatric Pal Chocolate Coconut is so amazingly good (my lunch today). A little lighter on the protein side at 15 grams but it tastes like an almond joy sans the almonds. That sweet chocolate and coconut flavor. I just realized why it's so sweet. I didn't think to look at carb counts when I bought them I just said oooo that sounds good, got to have it, and clicked the buttons. I've lucked out as the girl who works in my office trying to put on weight will buy any of the proteins I don't like off of me so they're at least not going in the trash. My husband is going to want to shoot me when he sees this box of everything I bought last week from the website. It's a good thing we have separate bank accounts or else he'd have a fit at the amount of stuff I've bought prepping for this surgery. Meet my surgeon for a final pre-op appointment tomorrow as well as doing some labs and another appointment with the pre-op department at Mayo so will be in the car the majority of the day tomorrow. Not looking forward to that as often as I've got to go to the bathroom with all these fluids. May be a miserable trip, bad enough I'm having to make it alone. This is where I feel sorry for myself for being a loner and not having a friend I can drag along with me. So I'm open to making new friends! And hope all of our September's go amazingly! 11 Days!? The last few months have flown by and it's been a pretty amazing ride once I got placed with the right physicians. -
Reaching protein goal.
Arabesque replied to Lisasiwhaas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What do you mean by bariatric foods? I just ate regular foods from purées not even shakes or protein powders. Sure my protein intake was low to begin but it got higher. What is your protein goal? Are you focussing on eating the protein component of your meal first then any vegetables & finally only if you are able & permitted any carbs. At 7 months I would expecting you’re eating about 3 or 4ozs of meat for a meal now. 3ozs chicken breast has 26g protein, 3ozs tilapia has 22g. Depending on your goal that’s a good 1/3 of your goal in one meal. I supplemented my protein intake with a high protein yoghurt (mine has 20g) or yoghurt drink (blend yoghurt with milk & get 30g) as a meal & then a snack. I still prioritise protein in every meal & snack (except if it’s fruit of course). -
New to this and facing anger
Arabesque replied to Theia103121's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Snap! I woke up one morning & said enough too. I made an appointment with my doctor to start the process the same day. Best decision I’ve ever made. Your anger is a stage of the grief you’re experiencing which is quite a common before &/or after surgery. Doesn’t matter how much you read about life post surgery, it’s not until you experience it yourself do you fully understand. So you are also in a place of fear of the unknown. Talking with your therapist is a great idea to work your way through your anger, grief & fear. And keep referring to that list of positives. They’ll become blessings before you know it. It seems a long time at the beginning but in time you’ll look back & realise it wasn’t that long - the progress & benefits of your weight loss sort of blurs the time & makes it worthwhile. Most importantly get off the social media sites about bariatric surgery. They are the worst. They’ll feed your fear & anger. The ones I’ve seen give you tips on how eat around your surgery, how not to follow your plan (saw one sharing how to purée a fast food burger & fries 😱) & offer little support or encouragement. Yes, there are risks but there are with any surgery & bariatric surgery is far lower than many others including appendectomies & knee replacement. Your risks are much higher simply by remaining obese. As to whether you’ll be able to eat your favourite foods again the answer is yes. Though you’ll eat them less often & in smaller portions. You’ll work out how much & how often is best for you over time. You may even find alternatives &/or ingredient substitutes that are better for you & more nutritious. I looked at some of my old favourite foods & decided while I loved them they really didn’t love me & contributed to my obesity. You may find you discover new favourite foods & even that your old ones just don’t appeal as much. I’m a low sugar eater & avoid artificial sweeteners wherever I can (rather have a little real sugar than a sweetener). The shakes can be disgusting & have sweeteners but you don’t have to keep having them. I haven’t had one since I started purées & even in the post surgery liquid stage I only had one a day. Had soup for my other meals. Then I discovered a high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drinks to boost my protein intake. (Make your own drink by blending the yoghurt with milk which gives you bonus protein.) Your dietician should be able to help you find other suitable alternatives as well. All the best. -
Hi! I'm new here. I went through about six months of the process for WLS about four or five years ago, but I didn't lose weight during the six-month pre-op phase, so things stopped. I had also been running across many horror stories (mostly on social media), which made me think that maybe it was for the best, anyway. Well, five years later, I weigh no less than I did back then. I have a huge list of co-morbidities, some of which are related to weight, some I had prior to my weight gain, and a couple that cause weight gain. I'm on over ten meds a day, and I'm only 42 (well, 43 in a few days). I feel like I'm falling apart. I think the last straw was that my oldest son got married in June. I saw myself in the wedding photos. I ruminated on that for a few weeks, and then woke up one morning and decided I was sick of obesity and everything that goes along with it. So, I asked my PCP for the referral, and I have my first appointment in September. Because I did six months of their program and because I read their patient handbook, I have a better idea of what is expected of me than I might otherwise. But I'm angry. I'm angry that I'm going to have to give up my favorite foods or accept sugar-free versions (and I can't stand artificial sweeteners; I'm actually really worried about it because most protein drinks/powders seem to rely on them). I'm angry that I won't be able to eat like everyone else. I'm angry that I'll have to go through so much physically. I'm angry that I have to lose weight to have surgery to help me lose weight that I need because I can't lose weight on my own. And I'm angry that it's such a long process. If I have to do it, tell me what to do, let me sulk over it for a few days, and then let's just do it. I know that's not how it works, and I don't know why I'm so angry. I have no one to blame but myself for being in this mess. I made a list of positives that could come from the surgery, and I got a full two pages. So I shouldn't be angry. And I realize my reaction shows that I have inappropriate attitudes toward food. I've discussed it with my therapist, and we're going to work on it, but I guess I was wondering if anyone else dealt with this and what helped them get past it. TIA!

Pureed Stage - How many calories?
catwoman7 replied to melanieinamumu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
we were told not to count calories the first few months...just to focus on getting protein and fluids. You're not going to be able to eat enough for awhile to worry about calories. -
I am only day 15 post op, so I have only tried Isopure Unflavored and added it to broths etc. I live on the premier protein!

Are you still supplementing with protein shakes? Or even still adding unflavored protein powder to drinks/food? -
I'm 7 months out after surgery. I can't reach my protein goal eating just regular foods. I have to add my bariatric foods every day. I'm finally eating nuts again which I love.

Hi All, today is my 6th day after surgery, no more gas pain, still feel weak. Today I did good meeting all my goals. Protein 64, water 48-56. Leaking how to make the full liquids more filling and good. Thanks you all for sharing, it helps when we need to refer somewhere with how we are getting through this. By the Grace of God, I don’t feel Hungary all the time just eat what I need too. I hope it’s always like this.

Good to hear you're doing well. Protein is your friend. Unflavored protein to broth and strained soups is helpful to get full. It's not always the best tasting. In my program I was allowed to add seasoning to my food as tolerated. That may help with the flavor (just nothing with chunks yet).

When did the eating pains/esophagal spasms(?) stop for you?
QnSheba replied to Penguin733's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m 10 weeks post surgery and still have this problem. For me, it’s eating one bite too many. The foamies happen and it feels better to just to get rid of that bite. I’m still learning what I can and can’t eat. Things I heard were tough to eat, like chicken are not hard for me. I can’t eat any kind of pasta, bread, or cracker. It’s very painful, I sweat profusely when I eat a food my new stomach doesn’t like, and I literally have to lie down until that feeling subsides. I struggle with getting my water and protein in daily. It has gotten easier since I was six weeks post-op, and I feel like it will get better with time. I did learn my trigger when I’m full, my sinuses get stuffy and I sneeze over and over. Just eat slow. My trigger doesn’t happen until about five minutes after my last bite. I always put my food to the side and re-visit it in an hour or two. I’ve lost 35lbs so far! Patience and learning your new tummy is key. -

I'm scheduled for bypass on Sept 7th....I start my 7 day pre-op diet Thursday. I was a little anxious about doing the liquid diet but my surgeon has a different plan. i will be having a protein shake for breakfast, one serving of fruit and a light Greek yogurt for mid morning snack, protein shake for lunch, a string cheese or hard boiled egg for mid afternoon snack, dinner is a lean cuisine or healthy choice frozen entree with a good source of protein (approx 300 cal) or 3oz of lean meat/fish and a serving of non starchy veg and an evening snack of a string cheese or hard boiled egg, and drink a minimum of 64oz of water. No liquid diet at all! -
Food Before and After Photos

There are sweet biscuits in my pantry 😱. First time in four years. My five younger nieces & nephew (almost 6-13) are having a sleepover this weekend so I bought the biscuits as an afternoon snack. Can’t expect them to eat my snacks - lol! Though I did buy frozen edamame we could also share … if they like it. 😁 Supermarket brand: 82 calories & 1g of protein. They’ll be taking them home on Sunday if there are any left (probably won’t be). -
Torn between counting carbs or counting calories
Arabesque replied to KathyLev's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That’’s much like why I don’t like to use the word ‘diet’. I hare people asking what diet I’m on. Sure I was on a diet while I was losing but now this is just how I eat. It works for me but it may not work for anyone else. I prefer to say ‘a way of eating’ instead of diet because to me there are too many negative connotations with the word diet. Restriction, punishment, limitations & failure. And much like @The Greater Fool, how I eat now is very much like I ate when I was getting closer to maintenance based upon what I learnt about my needs & preferences as I was losing & adding & trialing foods. Slightly larger portions than then of course & more snacks, but still predominately low processed, lowish carbs, lowish fats, very low sugar, still hitting protein & fluid goals. -
August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
Peggy Anne replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was a recipe recommended by the dietitian and in the plan. I started at 348 and am down to 295. I was 303 day of surgery. I'm also 66 yrs old and at that age everything moves slower. I'm following my plan 100% with reco food items but can't eat as much as I'm supposed to. Eating 6 times a day via pureed or protein drinks is a struggle. All I can manage is 2 Protein drinks and 1.5 meals whether chicken salad puree or tiny meatballs with spag sauce puree plus 48 on H2O. I'm day 15 post op and keep improving everyday. I can't wait to see 210 - I'll get there sooner or later. Wishing you great success! -

My surgery was on August 15 and my weight loss has been super slow too. I’m following the plan to the . Isopure protein drinks 1-2 premeir protein drinks and 64oz of water a day. My starting weight was 210 and I’m barely at 197 now. Maybe some of us lose more slowly at different stages. I agree though, that blended meals like the one mentioned in the original posting is way soon to try a meal and sounds too heavy for a bariatric patient… at least this early on. -

Hi Penny, I ended up with low potassium after surgery and had to stay in the hospital on those awful beds and few extra days and then told to go see my primary care doc, who is great. Love my PCP. Eating is hard - just had chicken salad puree for lunch - it's all I can do to stomach it. Kind of gross. I hope you can get your thyroid under control and soon. I would think it would play a big part in weight loss. I only feel better when I drink my protein shakes otherwise I have no brain function nor energy. I actually felt good yesterday with extra energy, I was shocked. Today I'm a bit laggy because for whatever reason I'm not longer getting past 5 or 6 hours of sleep at night. I'm lucky because at 66, I'm retired and my hubby is very neat so there isn't much demand on me. I am trying to get back into crafting but that's hardly demanding lol. I have a end of Nov show to build stock for. I can take my time. Wishing you well and not to hard of days at work. Just think a year from now we'll be a lot smaller and for me new knees!!! -
Frustrating Stall - and have I lost too little weight so far?
DustyRecording posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I got my surgery on June 22nd - about nine weeks ago. I am 5'8", 35F, and started out at 320, I'm currently 288 for a loss of 32 pounds over about two months. Is that okay? For the last week or so, I've had a really rough stall and barely been losing anything. Some days I'll even gain a pound. This is my second stall. I normally eat between 600 and 1000 calories (mostly about 800) and almost entirely protein really. Is there an issue with me? Is my weight loss rate okay or is it too slow? I feel like I should have lost like 50 pounds by now. What about this stall?
