    Banded Yesterday 12/27

Thanks, I sent my DH to the store for the Gas-X just in case. I appreciate the info. You got a fill in four weeks, that is pretty quick. How many lbs have you lost so far? Did you lose when the band was empty? I have been trying to get in the liquids so far I think I'm doing great on that. I did buy this stuff called Whey 42 which is 42 gms of protein. It tastes pretty good, it comes in like a plastic bullet (grape, orange, etc.) you take the top off and drink it. It's clear and not very much (thanks for that). But it gets me 42 gms of protein in easily.
  2. Well its been a little over 3 months since I made the lifechanging trip to mexico and had surgery with Dr. Garcia. As of today I am down 41 lbs. I just wanted to say I am doing GREAT! At this point I can eat most anything without problem (although plain water still makes me sick) IF I wanted to I could easily eat quite a bit, HOWEVER having the surgery and seeing the weight loss has become an AMAZING motivation to stay on track. I now actually LOOK forward to exercising, it's become a time for quiet and to destress. I exercise at least 3x a week doing strength and cardio. As for food, I found myself eating too many carbs these past few weeks and decided it was time to go back to basics and focus on protein. I've been following the Atkins phase 1, BEFORE surgery giving up carbs would have been a nightmare and I would have been unsuccessful. NOW though I am half way through my first week on the low carb diet and feel fine, and havent had any struggle to do it or stick to it I wouldnt say the sleeve FORCES me to eat right, or exercise, or stay on track. It instead MOTIVATES me to do so and gives me that little extra push I need. The sleeve has been my catalyst to get my eating under control and live healthy. I am posting pics of my month progress (Please note the change in back fat. I was a low BMI to begin with, but decided on the surgery because I have scolisosis and have steel rods attached to my spine and the weight was causing me pain and discomfort. Now that I am carrying less weight my back feels SO much better) ETA: also notice the short changes in the pics, The shorts I wore in my pre op pics dont fit any more and I've had to wear the bra on a tighter link
  3. Surgery scheduled for Oct. 6th and I'm on day 3 of my pre-op diet. Which consists of 3 boost high protein shake and 2 cups of vegetables a day. I know it's only the 3rd day but I haven't lost any weight since I started. Has this happened to anyone else? Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi all!

Howdy neighbor! *waves* I'm in WV as well, my surgery is next month at WVU Hospital. I'm also opting for the sleeve, I think it will suit me better. I can't speak to quitting smoking except to say good luck, they say it's tough but so worth it in the end. The clearances and tests you'll go through usually depend on what your insurance requires and what's the "norm" for your surgical program; mine is 6 months of nutrition class, cardio testing, pulmonary testing, psych eval, letter from my PCP, and endoscopy. One more class to go! I'm relatively new to this forum as well but I've found it a wonderful source of information and support, and I think you will too. You can edit your profile from the main webpage, that's how I do it, I don't think there's an option for that on the app. And "stickies" are forum posts that are permanently set at the top of the page so they're easier to find, usually FAQs or necessary information. Hope that helps, and welcome!

    Hopes and Fears

I guess it comes down to weighing the pros and cons. It can be a scary choice just because it's such a HUGE choice. But you know what's right for you and how to get there. I was a major sweet-eater before the band. I was also afraid I wouldn't be able to kick that habit. But once you are properly restricted and you make sure to eat your regular balanced meals (Protein first, veggies next, then fruit or multi-grains), there really isn't room for much else! And really, because I've made myself stay away from sweet stuff for the most part, I can't handle sweet stuff as well as I used to. It makes me ill if I eat too much. The NP at my Dr's office also mentioned to me that as you lose a bunch of weight, your taste buds can change which can include making sweets taste TOO sweet. It's an adjustment, but you can do this. And you will be AMAZED at what you are capable of doing when you have such a powerful ally on your side!

    Post-Op "Diet" question...

Wonton Soup without the wontons was a good alternative. Once on mushies, I lived with cottage cheese and greek yogurt. I made my own Pea soup from split peas, onions and shredded (in the magic bullet) 4oz of ham, and let the whole thing simmer for a few hours. High protein, low fat and it filled me up good.
  8. It does regrow. I lost half of my of my hair, literally half of it. I didn't wear dark colored shirts if I could avoid it because I was blonde during my losing stage. But, it does grow back. My new growth is growing in stick straight. I had super wavy, voluminous hair pre-sleeve, now my hair has little body, and it takes a lot of product for me to get it to do anything. I mainly flat Iron it now to tame the stray, fly away, chia pet new growth. Edit to add: My shedding started right around 3.5 months, and lasted 3 solid months. During this entire time, my labs were fabulous, and I was consuming normal foods and hitting Protein goals every day.
  9. You need to measure your food and eat on a schedule in the early weeks/months. It's the only way you can make sure you are getting enough calories and protein. You won't feel "hunger" and you'll associate food with discomfort, but you need to fuel your body! Are you doing any exercise yet? If/when you start to introduce intense exercise, you'll probably want to be up over 800 calories a day.

Not Eating Well (6 weeks - post op)

Welcome to the site. It is hard and counterintuitive, but you have got to get in your nutrition in order to lose weight but also to heal from surgery. Follow your program. Focus on getting in at least 64 oz of Fluid, every day. Focus on reaching your Protein target, every day. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise when cleared. (Walking is a great way to start.)
  11. Hi all. Banded 2/11! Just got some general questions and thoughts. I had the gas pain after surgery, I feel like I still have some though... anyone know when this will go away? I'm really trying to listen to my body a little better, make sure I don't over drink or have anything too thick. I'm worried about drinking too fast or too much. I am having these chest pains that kind of move up... no burp. I can't figure out if it's being caused by digestion or drinking too fast or if it's gas still escaping. Anyone have a way to discern between the two? Also, I'm craving everything. Today I cheated and turned my chocolate Protein shake into a yummy shake by adding some chocolate syrup. Bad I know... but I am really struggling to like any Protein shakes. I think I'm hitting a point where I'm scared I made a bad decision. Maybe I'm going through a period of mourning... I don't know. (You know, mourning the loss of my best friend- food!) I saw a commercial today for unlimited enchiladas (my favorite mexican food) and I thought, How come that didn't come out earlier?? I can't take advantage of it! Does this sound stupid?
  12. Hey BPs, The topic at this month's pre-surgery diet class was vitamins supplements in the first 3 months, e.g. chewables or powders. Someone in the elevator on the way down had sampled a chewable and we were both gagging (and giggling) at how awful it was. Recommendations?? Our practice offered 2 chewable options and 1 powder option, but we can bring other options in for approval.
  13. I didn't try the Isopure I did do the Protein powder and it was cloudy. NOt sure you can fix that. It wasn't bad just looks funny.

    Started Preop Antibiotics in Mexico

I have been in Cancun, Mexico since Sept. 10, 2011. I started the preop antibiotics yesterday. So far so good. I will not start the liquid protein shakes until I get home. I looked at pics of myself at Xplor and really started thinking ahead to how much easier it would have been to climb the 14 platforms to zipline or walk the beach to the snorkle spot if I didnt weigh so much! I was exhausted but proud that I finished the two circuits. I plan to continue my daily activity when I get home so that I am used to exercising. I am excited about my surgery on Sept 28 but it really hit home that I will have to work at it just as hard as I did yesterday. There were times when I wanted to just walk down the stairs and give up. But the sucess was worth it. I can push myself to my limits. I found that it really wasnt a "limit" I could do more!

    I'm NEW & I'm getting banded!!!

push the protein...it should help some. and make sure when your not eating to drink water and no calorie drinks. and chew gum that always helps if I ever get hungry. How much weight have you lost so far?
  16. Hi everyone, I'm a 31 female from NY who's been struggling with her weight since childhood. I've tried every diet you can name of. I'm sure we all can relate to it. However, now I have high blood pressure and I'm pre-diabetic, which scares me because my grandfather died from complications from diabetes. I'm so apprehensive because like all other "tools" or diets I've failed. Also, I've seen on here that a lot of people weren't full until they received their first adjustment. That is just too scary! I've lost 11 pounds on the liquid diet for the last 10 days. Basically, I'm asking what did you consume that had enough Protein that kept you full, and also assisted in your weightloss for the first 4-6 weeks? I can't imagine being able to drink my protein replacement shakes that are 8ounces and have 27grams of protein since, they say you can only sip 2 ounces at once. If you have any tips or foods you suggest, please advise, as I will be going shopping this weekend. Thanks from your, SCARED PREOP NEWBIE PS: I heard that sometimes food gets stuck and you should eat a scoop of butter? TRUE OR NOT? [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:4417]
  17. Don't give up. You have come so far and now that your port is fixed you can really work the Band. Keep up on your protein, so you can feel full. And don't forget to exercise. You will get there. Remember you did not gain the weight over night. It takes time to lose it.

    Hi im nervous and excited

Hi... nervous and excited is normal! Changing our eating habits and lifestyle scared the h out of all of us to be honest. But... It can be done. Just take it one day at a time. Learn all you can up front about how to deal with certain things, test drive protein shakes, plan ahead when you travel, and last but not least follow your doctors orders. ALWAYS! Pre-Op, Post-Op, Post Fills, etcetera. Do it for yourself and no one else, and WANT it more than you have ever wanted anything! Best Wishes!

WLS Part 2 - Electric Boogaloo

Thanks Valentina! Day 4 also has gone well so far, expect for my thoughts of going to buy burgers and pizza. I have maintained for today by just having a yogurt with my three Protein shakes and Water. I just want the 25th to hurry up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Has anyone had the band done with a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus from acid reflux? I was going to have the band done in two weeks, but just had the upper GI done and found this out. Have not talked with my barriatric surgeon yet, waiting for some tests to come back. I really think the RNY is more drastic than I want to loose weight. I have Tricare for my insurance and they will not pay for VSG, you have to have it done at a MTF. The cut off age for the MTF in my area to do a VSG is 55 and I am 58. I was wondering if Tricare would pay for VSG if other two surgeries are not an option. Probably not.

    Sex change now covered!!!!???OMG!!

I will go against the grain I never want to see the lap band covered call me all the names in the book I am ok with being an elitist snob for a lot of reasons... If it is covered there won't be more time for WLS surgery it will just be another surgery on the schedule and there is already a 7 year wait in ON for the bypass. people who are self pay take it more seriously and tend do better than people who have it paid because they have skin in the game (that comes from talking to WLS in the US where there are both options) and a host of other reasons I know it is a hardship for some but hell I had to pay too and I found the money.... I am glad the On legislature passed a bill to not cover the band. Heather
