I'm 3 weeks post op and my program cleared me for "exercise" at 2 weeks post-op. The surgeon suggests AND recommends just doing brisk walking or elliptical, but nothing too strenuous until 4-6 weeks. Remember your calorie intake is pretty low and your body probably not used to it yet so don't go crazy. I walk 45 to 60 minutes on the treadmill every morning and I've done well with that until he tells me I can do more. BUT....I would call the surgeon's office and ask anyways, just to be sure.

Sugar free thing?
joatsaint replied to LittleDooker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of the reasons I can think of for going sugar free is that we are suppose to get our nutrition from our food (as opposed to Vitamins and supplements). To get in the required Protein and stay within the recommended daily caloric intake, will naturally force us to choose foods that don't have much processed sugars in them. Most any foods with sugar or high fructose corn syrup are going to quickly push us over our recommended daily calories/usually have low amounts of protein/and be low in nutrition. And on top of that, sugar can be a trigger food - causing hunger to increase/spike insulin levels/and leave you feeling lethargic when insulin levels crash. I know that when I eat starches that I get hungrier the more I eat - until I'm busting full. Then a few hours later, my insulin levels come crashing down and I get hungry again. -
Ahh yes it’s crazh though @Matt Z I intake between 300-500 calories per day and I mean I know I work it off. I’m walking 2 miles a day and 2-4 times hitting up the gym for my cardio. And of course sleeping burns like 700-800 calories😂 i know it’s still early in the game for me but I hit the ground running after my surgery and this little stall and only 1lb per week thing is killing me !!! Maybe your gaining muscle. That has happened to me in the past we’re I was gaining muscle and losing inches. So that little weight gain your having isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
-
I am glad you are feeling better about this. Just remember through any stall (because you will have a few through this process) that no human can survive on the limited calories we are consuming (assuming you are sticking to your plan) and not lose weight. Your body may fight it for a little while but the loss is inevitable.
-
Really?? Hmm I’ve never though of that I will increase my calorie intake and see if that makes a difference! Maybe my body is in starvation mode!! muscle can grow at an alarming rate so you never know Matt also there is water retention that does happen in men as well !!

MANY people have a bit of a stall when transitioning from pureed food to solid food when they're about three weeks out. Google "Bariatric Surgery Three Week Stall". It's super common, and super disheartening. But don't be overly concerned! It's normal and if it happens, you're not necessarily doing anything wrong. Our bodies have amazing defense mechanisms developed over thousands of years to prevent starvation. When our calories suddenly dip very low we hormonally and metabolically adjust to maintain our weight as much as we can....so...ya know...we don't starve to death. And yes, this defense mechanism SUCKS for weight loss. But the good news...is that if we stay the course....and stick to our plans consistently...eventually, we do overcome it and the scale starts moving again. I promise. Dthomas....if you're not exceding your calorie goal, if you're journaling what you eat and choosing good food...your mind IS right. Your body is just throwing you a curve ball as a defense against starvation. It's temporary! Stick to your eating plan. Have patience. And have realistic expectations. Most folks are not going to have the 50 pound losses you see on My 600 Pound Life in a few weeks. Also...losing a job and the financial crunch it brings... can be really discouraging and depressing. Exercise really will help you, even if it's just walking a few miles a day. Hang in there. It gets better.

You are doing great! I have to count calories, protein grams, and fibers to get the results I want. Too little I don't lose, too much I don't lose. I do agree that you should serve yourself and your family the same thing. Just alter the recipe to be healthier and eat yours on a small plate. Keep up the good work.
-
Yes, and I get plenty of calories, protein, water, vitamins, etc. It's mostly first thing in the morning and I just steady myself on the wall. I've talked to my dr. and decided it's not a big deal.

I'm on day 5 of my 10 day pre-op diet....I'm suppose to be doing liquids...I've been really good so far...but yesterday I did take a can of heathy choice Soup and blend it in the blender...It tasted really good (considering I've only been drinking Protein shakes before this)... Would this be acceptable after banding? I was looking at my diet plan and on the 1st week it says I can eat baby food....So does this count? It was high in protein and low in Calories..But I wasn't sure how well my stomach would take it after the banding.
-
The point of the band is to help us to make lifestyle changes i.e. for the long term, the rest of our life. The very nature of diets is that that are short term because they are unsustainable in the long term. Yes, I count calories and exercise, but I see that as being part of my personal education on this journey so that I am making the right lifestyle changes. But - people need to do what works for them and we are all different, so my opinion is just that, my opinion.

As weird as this sounds. I finally figured out "my acid reflux" was / is due to me not eating enough. It took almost 4 weeks of looking at foods and times I was eating, it finally stumbled onto the fact it was not the time or any " normal" factors for me it was a calorie "quantity". If I get below 1400- I have horrid reflux- so I have to watch that now. I am not trying to loose more weight, but their are days that my band "seizes up and Soup is it" due to cycle and moon beams or jupiter or whatever. I have to make sure I eat more or get it in somehow or I pay for it! I hope the post nasal drip is your cause- cause the lack of sleep can drive you insane!

Someone said GenePro. I'm taking the risk and trying it. I'll try almond milk too, good idea! I use fairlife milk, it has 80 calories per 8 oz. And 13 grams of protein vs the typical 8? Less carbs and sugar and lactose free too. At this point I'm so incredibly nauseous it's hard to eat or drink anything that's kind of why I asked (and I'm too lazy to read my original post). I'm struggling with my water and protein and all that is stalling my weight loss! This came out of nowhere, I was fine for almost 5 weeks! Ugh. I just can't do my usual Cabot right now and even shakes and yogurt are bothering my stomach.

Yuck, had my first slim experience today
hopetolose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Omg, that is awful. I have gotten stuck before, or so I thought, until this morning. I was driving back from texas this morning and wanted to get something quick that didnt have alot of calories, so I got a sausage burrito from mcdonalds. Figured I eat half of it. Took a small bite, went down fine. Took the next and tnat was it. Thought I would die, had to pull over and finally had to force myself to bring it up. Yuck. Never want to do that again. Should of know better than to have that anyway, and to do it while driving was not the smartest move. Ended up with just a protein drink for the rest of the drive. -
Calories, 7Months + Vsg

This is something that you will probably have to figure out on your own. Everyones needs are different. Dependng on your height and physical activity your calorie demands can be way different that someone who is more or less active. There are a lot of factors involved in what your body needs to either continue losing weight or maintain. Good Luck -
If you want something Water resistant get the Jawbone UP. It won't help you in the pool though. Swimming is a different action. What you can do with the FitBit is press and hold to time the activity then go into the site or app later and mark that you swam and what you did then it will calculate the calories of that time period. Both are $99 and if you can, I suggest getting both the FitBit Ultra and the Jawbone UP for different reasons. If something is a benefit on one, it doesn't exist on the other. But the two together make for an amazing pair and it's only $198 total for both if you can afford it. Otherwise go with the one that has the better features for your life. The benefits of the UP are: ----------------------------------- - Built in alarm (it will buzz your wrist to wake you up when you are in a light sleep between 30 minutes prior to your wake up time and your wake up time). - Syncs with your iPhone if you have one. - Allows you to take pictures of your meals then asks you about two hours later how you feel so you can eat better by what makes you feel better (generally lower calorie foods and smaller meals make you feel better). - Can be worn all the time and is water resistant so you can shower with it (I'm too scare to). - Calculates light vs deep sleep. - Allows you to set vibration reminders to move every 15, 30, 45, 60, etc. minutes. The benefits of the FitBit are: --------------------------------------- - Amazing website with a ton of functionality - same for the iPhone or Android app. - Wirelessly syncs with the website any time you get near a computer that has a base station connected (so you can get a spare base station for work if you want). - Is small and no one knows you have it on. - Counts flight of stairs. - Shows you, on the device itself, your daily and minute-by-minute stats. - Shows movement when you're sleeping so you know if you moved a lot (restless sleep). - There are a lot of products that integrate with the FitBit. I've had a FitBit for two years now and bought one for my mother and sister. I've had both the original and Ultra - the Ultra is worth it for the stairs. I've been using an UP since its release, and I like the alarm function and light vs deep sleep, and vibration reminders - but beyond that it gets in the way, is out in the open all the time, gets caught in my hair and on clothes, has no online monitoring (apps only), and doesn't track calories / Protein, etc. If you can only get one - get the FitBit Ultra and use the website and apps along with it.

if it "slides," why do the calories stay long enough to
traceyc replied to SaraLaughs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It slides out of the stomach so you don't stay full and you can eat more. It will still go through the intestines where you will be processing and absorbing the calories. At least that is my understanding. -
I'd start tracking all your calories and fat and protein on a site like sparkpeople. You may find that you aren't getting enough protein. Also, click on my ticker and you'll see my weight loss pattern. It's very stairstep-I'll be the same weight for a week or two then drop 4-5 lbs in a couple days!

If you are drinking juice all day you may be drinking all of the calories you need. There are 130 calories in one cup!

How much exercise do you all do in a day?
catfish87 replied to cutlass6521's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a minimum weekly "goal" of 210 minutes. 30 minutes per day average. I just checked my activity tracker and for the last year, I've averaged 558 "exercise" calories per day.....I don't exercise every day, but over the course of the year, it evens out. (203,526 calories for the past year) Minute wise, its right at 50 minutes per day average over the last year. ExerciseCalories with average2014-04-11 (4849).xlsx These are numbers from LoseIt!, but pretty close to my HRM tracked numbers, which show 189,xxx calories of exercise. -
Hey doll, you are right to take it easy and slow. While it shouldn't really take an hour to finish a protien shake, as long as your doc says everything is okay, then an hour it is. I made the mistake of trying to push it, simply because I thought what I was feeling was normal, and looking back my tummy was telling me to slow it down. Sip smaller, sip slower, take it easy, and get lots of extra rest since it's harder to get your calories in. My bet is your still very swollen in the band area of your stomach. If that's the case, then you are doing the right thing taking it slow. Take it from me. I had a very bad first 2 weeks, and you could easily make it harder on yourself getting too anxoius. I did...don't do what I did!! Good luck, keep us posted.

Hi All......... I went to GNC today and got Isopro protein drinks...no carbs...and the Raspberry is very good! With a little crushed ice in it, it tates like a Raspberry Slush Puppy....It is going down much easier than the shakes. The Isopro is a little higher in calories, but also higher in protein...Two would be more than enough during the day....If the shake was 15g and the Isopro is 40, thats pretty close to the 60 recommended grams a day! And its easier for me to get em all in....EHA I think I found something that works!!! By Jobe I can do this.....I can do this!! Okay....gonna go....taking a loooonnngg hoooot shower! CYA

It's normal. Your body is like - WTF? - and needs time to readjust. I lost almost 35 lbs my first week. It doesn't mean I lost fat, it means I was dehydrated, in ketosis, and really needing to poo! I'm about 11 weeks post op. I'd have to look at my blog, but guesstimating I'm going to say that between weeks 5 and 9 I didn't lose anything, or lost maybe a pound. My body needed time to recover from the initial shock of everything that happened to it. That's all. If you're following the calorie adage, then you need to keep in mind that results aren't instantaneous. Yeah, you're taking in fewer calories than you're burning, but there are a lot of little things in our body that can help it get by or, adversely, add to our total weight. It doesn't mean that the minute your activity puts you at the point of being under your BMR, ou can jump on the scale and see a pound gone. Remember that the scale weights your entire mass, meaning your skin & everything in it. It does not weight your fat. You will probably experience frustrating times, if you rely on the scale only, because it is possible to lose sizes without losing weight, especially if your workout routine is effective. Just be patient. It will happen.

It takes time. 20 pounds in 1.5 weeks is not normal... Wonderful, but not normal. Personally, I like to shoot for 2 pounds a week, though lately I have been doing 3-4 pounds, only because I am working out so much and eating properly. Do you track your calories and Protein in www.fitday.com? It is a great tool to see how much you are consuming. Make sure you are eating enough (like 1000-1500 calories) and you are getting in at least 60g of protein. Also, for me, it depends on my monthly cycle. Some days, I am so bloated. And I have noticed that at times, the scale takes time to catch up. If you take your measurements, you may see a better indicator that you are losing weight. The scale is fickle at times. When you see inches lost, you will feel better...

Day 5 and zero desire for liquids especially milk
Rev Me Up! replied to Paul_Y's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are nauseous all the time, every day, you need to talk to the doctor and make sure everything is OK. Otherwise, I had an aversion to just about everything after surgery. I wasn't allowed to have dairy the first week. I couldn't stomach the Protein drinks so I did my best to stay hydrated with clear broth, decaf tea, and Water. I was also on omeprazole daily for the first few months - it was a lifesaver. Don't know how people recover without it. I started in with milk in the second week and then moved on to drinkable yogurt. I found what tased good one day would taste nasty the next. It was a constant struggle. Just do the best you can to stay hydrated. At one point, I switched to full sugar gatorade because I was seriously getting dehydrated and taking in almost zero calories - I felt like garbage. These first couple weeks are really tough, but you can do it. Make sure to chek in with the doc, though. Persistent nausea is not a normal thing. Also, check your temp - that will indicate an infection, if there is one. Good luck--
