Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Dogmom68 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I started to have GERD symptoms about six months after my VSG. They’ve continued to worsen and now bother me in my sleep a lot. Even though I take esomeprazole in the AM and Pepcid in the PM. To be honest, I wish I would have just had the bypass to begin with! I only lost about 40 to 50 lbs with my sleeve, as well. I still have 50 to 60 lbs to lose so hopefully once I can get my hiatal hernia repaired and the bypass done then I’ll be able to work on losing that extra weight! 🤞🏻😁💕 -

Welcome and I go through times of nerves and excitement. I've wanted to get the bypass for years so I was super excited when my husband switched jobs and it was now mostly covered by insurance. The closer it gets the more I get nervous because its a big change and because its a choice. Honestly, if I don't get the surgery I'll probably just keep getting bigger and more amd more unhealthy. I have years of proof to myself that regular diets of every other kind have only been temporarily successful. I just have to keep reminding myself of that though lol. -

I am scheduled for gastric bypass on September 28th. I'm super nervous and have even had days I've gone back and forth asking myself if I really want to go through with it. I'm new here and getting lots of information. I'm sure I'll have questions soon! -
I am also having hernia repair with my bypass. How ridiculous that your insurance says it isn't medically necessary. I only have a medium sized hiatal hernia and I am in a lot of pain most days and have to sleep in a mostly upright position. I've seen medical journals state that the most effective way to keep the hernia from coming back is to have bypass with the hernia repair. My surgery is scheduled for the 19th. I hope you get insurance approval and can get yours done on 8/29. I saw someone post about non scale victories after the surgery and I am hoping that one of mine will be that I can bend over without throwing up!

Some of you may already know my surgery got pushed from 8/8 to 8/29 due to an insurance authorization issue. My doctor and surgery scheduler are working hard to try to get me approved for the hiatal hernia repair/ bypass. My insurance said it wasn’t medically necessary. So after already doing one week of pre-op liquid diet I get to start over around the 15th! I also have to have an upper GI to document the hernia. Fun fun! Please keep your fingers crossed that I can get through this!🤞🏻😊

At 7 months post-op, I finally hit 100 Lbs lost. I am scheduled for a conversion on September 1st due to the fact that a recent EGD revealed a kink in my stomach (the part that empties into the intestines). This kink has caused me to not be able to eat and has resulted in the rapid weight loss. My surgeon is going to convert my sleeve into a bypass to correct the issue. I'm supposed to have my gallbladder removed as well due to the fact that I now have gallstones also. It really sucks to have to go through this all over again (the pre-op diet, the procedure & the recovery). Everyone keeps telling me that I need to get myself better and back to 100%, which I agree, but what is to say this is going to do it. I didn't expect this result from the first surgery. But I guess it is a risk you take in having WLS.

Procedure done at hospital or specialist?
AmandaD. posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hey everyone! I am just starting out my process trying to get all my ducks in a row before January when my insurance kicks in and everything begins… is there any significant difference when choosing a hospital setting over a Bariatric specialist setting to get gastric bypass procedure? I would assume maybe billing might be easier going through a hospital but any other pros/cons? Thank you! -
VSG to DS - Scared to Lose Too Much
Jue replied to Bumblebii's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve 2010 and then I asked could I have the bypass 2021 a long road but worth it in the end but I did get told I wouldn't lose as much because of the previous surgery they said I'd only lose 3 stone and I'm now here 112 pounds lighter got saggy skin but no one sees it good luck -
Still don’t do chips after 3 years but that’s a personal choice. I do have the occasional baked fava beans or chick peas as a snack which I discovered last year (once a month maybe). I don’t rally fry anything but sometimes use a little oil depending on what I’m cooking. (I love crumbed lamb cutlets & you need a little oil to get a crunchy crumb. Doesn’t work at all in an air fryer. But actually bake them now cause the fat in the lamb is enough to crisp the crumb.) I usually just use a spray olive oil &/or a non stick pan. As for butter I put a little on my green vegetables (microwave them in butter & water) & that’s it. I only just finished a 500g tub of butter I started using at the end of November last year. But again these are choices I’ve made.

VSG to DS - Scared to Lose Too Much
catwoman7 replied to Bumblebii's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
VSG is actually stage one of the DS. Years ago many surgeons did the DS in two stages (first, the sleeved stomach, then a few months later, the bypassed small intestine). Some patients did really well just with stage 1, so they started offering the sleeved stomach as a standalone surgery. Ta da! The VSG was born! so yes - lots of DS'ers had their DS done in two stages (esp those who had it done several years ago), and there are definitely people who've revised from VSG to DS. It's a more straightforward surgery than going from VSG to RNY, since you're already halfway to the DS when you have a VSG. -

Nice. I'm scheduled with Dr. Antonetti at the Lexington Medical Center (well not scheduled yet), but after insurance approval I'll be getting scheduled. November 23rd is my anniversary. So, I'll definitely be thinking of you when you have yours done! -

I'm new and scheduled for bypass Sept 19th. Can't belive its finally getting close because I started the process in Jan. Looking forward to a new me but scared too. Its weird because I've been on so many diets but this time is the 1st time I feel real hope for success but I don't want to get my hopes up too high either. So how do I get info under my name that everyone seems to have? -

It's possible I'll be having my surgery in November 2022 or December 2022. I'm going through the insurance approval steps. (6 months of classes and other required tests) I'll be able to submit to insurance at the end of November and will hear back in October. So, at that point we can schedule with the doctor who is booked out about 2-3 months. I see you're in SC and so am I. So, we could be surgery month buddies or at least close! Good luck! -
I have decided to get a revision from a sleeve to gastric bypass. My heartburn is getting worse and i'm gaining weight. I was originally sleeved in 2017. I am ready for this second chance because I have to self pay. I can't believe I have two full-time jobs and I'm still concerned about costs for this procedure. My first job won't cover the procedure and the second contracting job won't either. Since being sleeved, I never got to my goal weight. If you have any recommendations for bariatric surgeons in the Atlanta area, please let me know because my original surgeon has since retired during covid. I've found one surgeon, but he's very pricey at $24,000 and it doesn't include post-op appointments (insurance can cover), labs (insurance can cover), nutritional visits, (not covered by insurance) or supplements. Any feedback is welcomed.

Fitness level before surgery
Possum220 replied to Gucci73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was only able to walk past 4 houses and back. That was the most I could walk. Four months have gone by since my bypass. I can now walk 2 km per day. 1 mile? My ankle has been sore from arthritis and arthritis in my lower back. I feel so much better not carrying the weight that I used to. Now things are getting easier like looking after myself and even standing is so much easier. Hopefully your support team will be able to work around your health issues to get you to a better place. -
It has been 12 years since my husband passed. I am scheduled for surgery August 24. I have not dated at all since his passing But I feel this may change after my bypass. I am 60 years old. Have two wonderful grown responsible children. And three grandchildren that are the loves of my life

Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Dogmom68 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, my doctor is deciding whether or not to appeal or just submit a new request for authorization for repair to my hiatal hernia (and I self pay the bypass portion.) I have BCBS and they said my revision was not medically necessary. I’m afraid if my doctor submits paperwork for an appeal (and the whole thing gets denied again) then that’s the end of the road for me. I don’t mind paying the bypass portion since it’s very doable ($2600.) I almost feel like the hernia repair is more likely to be authorized. What do you think?? -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Dogmom68 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well, I’m pretty disheartened. My surgery was pushed from 8/8 to 8/29 to give my doctor’s office time to resubmit paperwork for an authorization for a hiatal hernia repair. My insurance didn’t approve the bypass revision so I may have to pay that portion of the surgery myself. I had already started my pre-op liquid diet so now that’s on hold for a few more weeks. I was so ready to have my surgery next Monday and now I just feel disappointed and frustrated. If I could afford to pay for the entire surgery, I would just to avoid the hoops I’m having to jump through to get this approved. I could use some words of encouragement right about now. 😢 -
I had never heard of this but if it is the same as DS surgery it’s been around a while and seems to be a good surgery. It’s a little more drastic than the bypass or sleeve but it is said to produce more weight loss. If your doctor thinks it’s warranted I would consider it. The main thing I have heard that is really different is that you may need to take some extra vitamins post surgery. We all have to take them in the beginning and most people have to take some for life but DS usually have to take a few more. As long as you are someone who will comply with taking vitamins probably 3 or 4 times a day for life it should be an option. I would check out Hop Scotch’s suggestion though and see what others who have had the surgery have to offer.

Hey everyone! I was just thinking, I had my bypass in Feb this year and I'm slowly but surely learning what I can and can't eat. There are randomly some foods I cannot stand now that I'm bypassed and it's not dumping, it just they taste to intense and sickening that I can't do it. Ever since surgery I am OBSESSED with hot tea (never was before). Drink it every day multiple times a day...something about a hot herbal drink feels so good in my esophagus lol Here are things I cannot stand now that im bypassed but used to be able to eat in large amounts: peanuts, peanut butter, any protein peanut powder or anything with peanut flavor, alfredo sauce, full fat cream cheeses or dairy based dips and spreads, pesto, corn based chips, nacho cheese sauce, mayo/cream sauces and dressing, gravy, chowder. So mostly my taste buds and like my throat (I get a weird sensation there with these foods) have changed and it's like im super honed into how fatty a food is when before I wasn't. It's weird but of course I like it because it helps me eat better and know my limits. So what are some foods you cannot do anymore after surgery that you liked before? Hi everyone, I'm just starting on this journey and have mete with my surgeon who mentioned SIPS surgery (Stomach Intestinal Pylorus Sparing). From what I understand it's somewhat of a combination of gastric bypass and duodenal switch surgery. I am not finding much research on it at all, which makes me wonder if it's a good choice. My surgeon advised he will do either surgery ( I'm pretty well set in mind with GP, but am open to options). He described the effects of increased weight loss, lowered rate of ulcers, strictures, & bowel obstructions, increased absorption of nutrients, lowered risk of diarrhea, increased hormonal changes. Has anyone ever had this done or seen much information about it? I still have more than enough time to decide, so I'm in no rush to make a decision. I'd love to hear your experiences with this!

Sleep Apnea after surgery
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had sleep apnea before I had my Lap Band surgery. I was on bipap. I was off my machine within a few weeks, maybe 8 if I remember correctly. I just had revision surgery to bypass 12 days ago and it was pretty cool, as a former sleep apnea patient, I was selected to be in a study about former sleep apnea patients and the effects of anesthesia on them. So I had to wear some electrodes from the moment anesthesia ended for 24 hours. The anesthesiologist heading up the study said I definitely still do not have sleep apnea according to their readings. -
Band to Bypass Surgery coming up...SCARED
CDMC1972 replied to MaryRN66's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I am in the process of converting from a band to another type of WLS. I got the band in June 2009, and had it removed in June 2021, due to complications with acid reflux. I met with my surgeon in May of this year to discuss a revision. Due to the issues with the band, he doesn't recommend the sleeve, but the bypass. I am nervous about the re-routing and the fact that I am almost 50. My current weight is 250 lbs. Would you be able to share some of your experiences/challenges before, during and after the revision surgery? I have completed most of my clearances and will meet with the surgeon on September 1st--I think during that visit we will discuss my surgery date and the type of surgery. I appreciate any insight you can provide. Thank you!
