Food Before and After Photos

Well, I finally decided to join the fun here in this thread: I pretty typical breakfast for me: This is ~3/4 cups of 2% Greek Yogurt, some thawed frozen cherries and some protein boosted granola. I don't really log my food, so I'm just guessing as to nutrition, but I'd think this is ~250 cals and ~22 grams of protein. Why 2% Greek Yogurt? Because that's what my wife prefers, so that's what we buy. I don't have a strong preference, but personally would probably buy full fat if I were buying it just for me. Note that I often change out the fruit based on what we have and what's fresh in the store. -
Family wedding two months after surgery
Pines posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
A couple of questions about recovery before a family wedding. I am scheduled for VSG on March 6. Yes, far out due to work commitments. I have a big family wedding two months later and am wondering (overthinking) how this will all work? 1) I am not in the wedding party but do have a role and need to get a new dress. At this point, I am planning to get a dress that fits me now and assume it may be a bit roomy two months following my surgery, but will still work. Does that seem reasonable, in others experience? 2) Is it likely I’ll be able to eat any of the wedding food two months out? I absolutely realize my experience may be different from others, just wondering what events have been like at two months for others going through the surgery. I also understand my options will be limited (plain protein?) but wondering if I’ll have to pack food/snacks. I’ve read all kinds recovery eating schedules but don’t have the proscribed one for my program yet. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences and advice! -
Do you mean 2025 for your op or a year ago? If only four weeks ago what you are feeling is totally normal and your body is recovering. Hopefully you will soon find a routine that works for you with regards to being able to take a bit more food and fluids but take your time with sipping and eating, baby steps for now and then it will get easier. Try to get your vitamins in, especially now as you are eating less. For me after the op I couldn't stand the smell of certain foods, even the smell of coffee turned my stomach but now all is back to 'normal' and I thankfully am able to drink coffee again. With regards to the weight loss, it is different for everyone, I put on a few kg in the hospital immediately after the op and then slowly started to lose but I didn't see it on the scale or physically for quite a while. It will happen when your body is ready. You have got this, it is early days.

I haven't had any issues with my sleeve. Out of the blue about a month ago I had what I thought was the flu, didn't throw up but had bad nausea and intestinal pain. Then I went to urgent care and they said I was dehydrated and gave me Zofran. I thought I was doing better. I was at work and had excruciating pain in the top right of my abdomen. And then it stopped. The next day I was so tired. Had brain fog. Could only eat soft bland food, lots of intestinal pain. I went to the ER 8 days ago and they said that I had a hiatal hernia and gave me more Zofran and bentl. And they just said to follow up with the gastroenterology department. They did a CT and found a teratoma on my ovary and my main dr said that that is what is making me so sick. I went to the gyn yesterday and he said no way this thing is making you so sick and said I should get a vaginal ultrasound which I can't get for three weeks. I had to apply for short term disability which isn't going to pay the bills. My main dr said to get in with the GI department and they sent in a referral. I don't live in the same city where I had my surgery. I'm wondering if anyone has had symptoms like this so far after surgery? If I eat or drink anything that is spicy or acidic or has a lot of fat or fiber it hurts so bad. My whole abdomen feels swollen. Even when I eat soft foods it hurts my whole abdomen. I'm fatigued, I have brain fog, I have a headache every day, it hurts to bend over to pick something up. I cry almost every day because I can't do anything and there are no answers. Maybe I should try to get into a bariatric practice here?

Thank you! I get nauseous sometimes, usually the night of injection but nothing else really! I'm on 10mg atm, most people are scared of the higher doses but for me it was a massive game changer. My experience: 2.5mg for 4 weeks no supression. 5mg for 4 weeks 1 day out of 7 for suppression. 7.5mg for 12 weeks most days I had supression 10mg week 5 on Wednesday and supression most of the time. But the supression isn't severe, it's just that I don't have food noise and I don't notice the hunger/cravings now. Went from huge portions to normal portions. Chocolate daily to a couple times a week. Takeaway once a week now once a month. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer them for you (: -

I think these are all good tips! That being said, this is the rest of our lives. I don't think its okay to label things good and bad and never allow yourself to have "bad" foods. Yes, it's hard to process carbs, but what is life with no mac and cheese or ice cream for the rest of your days. Its about finding the balance. Let yourself have the comfort foods, but in small amounts and in moderation. At least, I feel like this is the aim for me; I'm really bad (I'm very good at it, it's just not always healthy) at all or nothing thinking, and it inevitability would lead me to over indulging, rather than just allowing myself to have a little occasionally. Just food for thought. -
Going back a step?
summerseeker replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
TBH the smell and look of puree made me puke. I skipped it all together. I bought Heinz soups and seived the bits out. I had to go back to the last stage a few times. It gets easier when you can feel your restriction. Before that I had to rely on a runny nose or a sneeze to tell me I was full. This really is the hardest stage to master because its all new and we are so frightened to get it wrong. This forum helped me loads in this stage -

Interesting that it's called barley in the UK! We have a different grain we call barley, but the word "farro" is really odd here in that technically there are 3 different varieties of wheat berries we call farro: emmer, spelt & einkorn. These are all really ancient wheat grains that predate modern wheat. The word "farro" is obviously a loan word from Italian and we can thank the large Italian immigrant contingent here for it (and for bringing over some tasty ways to prepare it). Regardless, I agree that it's such a wonderful grain and sadly underutilized here in the states. I think our traditional barley is mostly used in soups and stews here, but farro is more common in salads like I made, or sometimes as a side dish similar to how you might make a risotto (another wonderful Italian dish). Sorry for going off on a tangent a bit, but I'm a huge food history geek and find it fascinating how what we eat has evolved and changed over time! -
Does your stomach make noises after you eat? LOL!
Selina333 replied to Selina333's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok! Thank you. So glad it's normal. I usually only hear it several minutes after I've eaten. Like I guess the food is settling in or something? Lol! Yes. I had trouble getting in water at first. Doing much better now. Feel better and not as hungry also because of that so it's very true, I feel hungry when I'm just thirsty. And I think I'll start cooking my veggies. Except cucumbers have been fine and I love them. Grapefruit is good and works well for me too. I need to get yogurt again. Soft foods help. Thank you for sharing. My weight is going down again finally and determined to pay close attention ans keep good habits and continue all the way to my goal. And beyond. I want to build muscle as much as I can so doing tension bands and kettle bells. Just want to be healthier all around by the end of this year. Just will do what I can. No one is perfect. ☺️💗 -
My surgery was june 4 and my appetite is returning. I’ve been going through the feeling of wanting to keep losing weight but also curious as to what foods will stay down and satisfy me. I think ill be eating soft foods soon. Tuna is all i eat. Im HUNGRY LOL. I know i have a long way to go but sheesh

Can’t offer any suggestions about your band but I can offer a possible cause of your reflux. So your gall’s job was to regulate the acid in your stomach. At the moment, your body hasn’t learnt to regulate it itself so you’re getting more than you need causing the reflux. I already had reflux and that didn’t really change much if I recall correctly but I did experience quite a bit of diarrhoea after the surgery from the excess acid stimulating my intestines. My surgeon told me it takes about a month to settle which it did. If your band is tight I presume it’s limiting how much food you can consume which also could also be adding to the reflux (too much acid for the smaller amount of food in your tummy.) If I miss a meal, I get a strong cutting pain across my abdomen from the excess acid and my reflux flares. Little meals more often may help. Check with your surgeon though of course. Maybe your band needs adjusting too.

Most often when folks ask this question they already know their answer and it's usually "I will be drinking." In so many words, they are looking for someone to give them permission to drink. Assuming your answer because you've already done your test in a safe environment. You will be with friends so you have a safety net that hopefully you will not need. It's easy to sit and drink and not realize you are over doing, so get up and walk around frequently to ensure you are OK. A reason you are cautioned from drinking early is, in addition to avoiding empty calories, is transfer addiction. Early post-op food is not as available as comfort or a coping mechanism and other things can easily fill the gap. Be careful. Enjoy your night out. Tek

Let's Talk GRIEF! An ongoing thread about bariatric grief!
summerseeker replied to Mspretty86's topic in Rants & Raves
Its early days, lots of us find some foods totally repellant, for me it was foods that I loved. pre surgery. Chicken, fish and especially salmon were very off my menu. If I even thought of them I heaved. It was like being pregnant all over again. Then some kind soul on here explained that as we loose fat cells they release hormones. Early on we are flooded with these cells because we are loosing so rapidly. It does settle down as weight loss slows. At 3+ years fish isnt totally off my menu but it isnt front and centre either. Eggs revolted me before surgery, now I eat them most days. -
I am allowed all strained soups but everything taste different. What's make it harder is i make food for my family. I just keep reminding myself of the postive but it's really hard.

possibly or also some people have high blood pressure that is purely genetic I mean if it’s not diet or weight related maybe the surgery doesn’t make it go away?? I imagine that reducing weight and changing diet would have to help some, but maybe it doesn’t cure it entirely. Good you are back on it though for now if you need it. -

Yes thats extra tough if you are cooking for the family. Thats going the extra mile for them. Cooking smell made me barf early on. My husband cooked in a closed kitchen with the windows open for me. Lots of us had weird taste buds and finding something palatable was expensive as I would reject foods after a taste. I still can't bide my once fav food, salmon. Its the keytones. I had the most disgusting taste in my mouth for a few months. Keep posting on here, We know you are suffering and we will be with you.

can you live entirely off protein the shakes??
GreenTealael replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It’s possible whoever told you this meant short term as in the immediate preop and early post op period. Or meant you can supplement/augment protein needs with shakes in addition to food but your bariatric team will move you through food stages and require you eat actual foods. -
January 2025 Surgery Buddies!
Melissa💖💜💙 replied to Melissa💖💜💙's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm on day 3 of my pre-op liquid diet. My surgery date is the 30th. Three protein shakes a day, and I can blend fruit (apple and/or berries) with some protein powder for a smoothie and also non-starch veggies for pureed soup. No sugar, no carbs, no dairy. Thank goodness for my Magic Bullet and immersion blender! It's going okay so far. My cravings are all head hunger because the liquid diet is keeping me full. I'm also having doubts every day. I know I need to do this because whatever I lose, I will just gain back and then some. I've lost 60 lbs. over and over again for the last 15 years. I can never keep it off. So, this surgery isn't necessarily to help me lose as I know I can do that on my own, but to help me maintain loss and keep it off for good. There are so many things I love that I am looking forward to doing, things my weight has been preventing for most of my adult life. Shopping "normal" sizes, traveling, socializing, horseback riding. I just need to focus on my long-term goals. -

Gastric Sleeve, with a hernia fixed while he was in there, as I seemed to have climbed into my own oesophagus the hernia fix means that I have more to repair and a VERY small food pipe. When I woke up - the pain cleared up relatively fast and honestly - it wont hurt after that - you have made the right choice. By the end of the day, you will feel better and ready to start seeing your scales again without fear. -

Congrats on your loss. Glad to hear you are doing well. Did you see all the attachments that you can get to put on a Stanley. To hold your phone and chapstick and all sorts of things. Like you wouldn’t need a purse I’m not kidding. I don’t know if I could do a month of fasting. Fasting for lab work is enough for me. Im trying to schedule some and they are all after 9:30 and I’m looking at a whole other lab just so that I don’t have to wait as late to have food. 🤣 -
I had been part time following the pre ops diet and cutting down on my food sizes a few weeks before I got news of my operation date : may 26, the same date 5 years ago I knew I was going to gain weight because of pregnancy complications. So the first two and the half weeks I just did more pre- ops eating (modifast in 4 different flavors) . They are quite tolerable. I usually had a normal (small sizemeal) in the evening with the kids. Now starting last Sunday, (18 may) I am on a full water fast for 5 days. Meaning my fast ends today at 19:20. I have my modifast oatmeal ready should I really need to eat something at that hour. Tomorrow Saturday I shall be on liquid pre ops meals as prescribed. Sunday will be another day on liquid only in preparation for my operation on Monday. I tell you what this is my body and I am determined to get it back. The operation is not a magic pill. It is just a tool in my toolbox. The way I think about food and how and why and when I ingest it- that to me is the magic. I am focusing very much in discovering my cues and knowing what triggers my eating habits. I am learning to say no all together when I am invited to that snack moment at work to eat what so ever what when I truly know I do not need it. - I am learning to say ’No’ and knowing it will be okay. I take it a minute at a time. We shall get through this and we will not turn back. I want to be able to jump into every photo without cringing I want to feel good and run about with my kids without feeling pain, exhausted and above all guilty. I am doing this for my boys and then for myself. We will be alright guys. We got this.

One week post op and feeling scared about never having favorite foods again
summerseeker replied to Cassafrass83's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello and welcome in the forum. There is a whole thread listed as Bariatric grief, its very worth a read. I had mine pre surgery. Anything with noodles was my thing. I had lots of Asian food funerals. I promise, it gets better. I eat everything I feel like except I cook it or it comes from a quality restaurant. I live in a part of the UK with out fast food places and the only one is a Dominos Pizza, I dislike the price £20, so would make it at home if that was my thing. I can eat a good amount of good icecream and some good chocolate, too much and I puke. I can eat a Magnum for instance. I eat Falafel with Tzatziki regularly and thats the first time I ever heard of it being off anyones menu. I bake it rather than fry it. I have had some Pad thai but its not really a thing for me anymore as I can eat so few noodles. I will go for Tom Yum or Tom Kha at our Fav restaurant. I can not eat anything ultra blitzed like Guacamole, shudder ... the puree stage has left a memory on my soul. I tried making it chunky but my brain will not accept it. All those slimming classes did have something to tell me after all. Being skinny is better than a bowl of the very best tasty noodles. Saying that .... if I could eat them I would, but not every meal, every day or week. -
Soooooo healthy fats, always have been scared of peanut butter but omgsh I found this nut butter called Nuttzo and its AMAZING!!! I made PB balls with Nuttzo, pure maple syrup, unsweetened shredded coconut and rolled oats. let me tell you these things are the most amazing snack (usually post workout for me. Anyone else have any other recipes they like with nut butter they want to share? I have been eating it 2x a day. In the morning with my keto bread only tsp and half a banana, but I would like to find other stuff to do with it. Thanks!

I mainly rely on shakes because it's much easier, I work 2 jobs and I'm up and out by 6:40am, getting home by 10:30pm/11pm, its just easier to grab a shake while I'm driving to my jobs, I do have a more stable meals during the weekends and if I can, meal prep so I can have some food for my lunch break, I know that I need to eat more but some night I get home so exhausted, I only have enough energy to drag myself to bed, with my budget I can prepare for about 6 days, but those are usually for the work week Maybe not the best explanation, and maybe I could make an effort to cook more but I have 2 jobs for a reason, I'm broke and I budget out all my expenses to the cent
