What do you do instead of eating?!
Dogmom68 replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I used to have active hobbies like gardening but since I was diagnosed with arthritis in my spine (all over my body, really) I can’t do things I used to be able to do. I was very depressed for a long time because I had to leave my job I loved because of all the pain. That was three years ago and since then I’ve found other things to do that make me happy. I go to the pool and just walk around in the waist deep water to move my legs (I had a hip replacement recently.) I have gotten really good at needlework/ cross-stitching and have completed some beautiful projects. It took awhile to change my mindset and now I focus on my health and eating well. I’m able to focus on tracking my food which has allowed me to gain control over my eating/ calorie consumption. I’ve lost 80 lbs and I have 50 more to go. We all can do this!❤️ -
Thank you for posting. I was just searching the forum for a post about the 3 week stall. I am currently 6 weeks post-op and have been stalled from week 3- the current. I know all the FB support groups etc warn you about the 3-week stall, but I have been so discouraged watching the scale not move for 2.5 weeks. I keep my net carbs at below 35 a day, my calorie intake is usually between 550-700 calories a day. My protein is always between 70-90 grams a day. And for the most part, I reach 64+ oz of water. i don't know what else to do to break the stall. I did lose 1.3lbs in the last 24 hours, so I'm hoping that's a sign I'm back in the game and will see the scale changing again.

Thank you sooo much for sharing this! I have struggled for so long trying to hit my protein goals without incorporating too many calories. Hopefully this will be a game-changer for me!😁💕

This seems too easy...

Congratulations! My first night in the hospital was HARSH, pure gas pain issues. But otherwise, I would also say I was lucky enough to have an "easy" recovery. No pain meds, not even Tylenol except while in the hospital. Never took anything once I was home. No nausea, no issues drinking or eating, no issues transitioning through phases. I know I am lucky, I see people struggle and I feel for them. I don't think your struggle makes you successful or unsuccessful. I think that just depends on your body and how you follow the plan. I have not struggled, lost 85 lbs in about 4.5 months since surgery and 122 in total since I started the process in October 2021! I still treat myself once in a while, I could my calories and kinda macros and make sure my treats fall within range. So far this has been working for me, everyone has to find what works for them. -

Thought I would share some photos of my progress. First image is December 2021, second is today (August 9th 2022). It's been a very difficult journey. Anyone who says surgery is the "easy way out" don't have a clue what they're talking about. Right now im still struggling with low energy levels and getting in enough calories. I now weirdly have the opposite problem of trying to slow down weight loss so I don't become malnourished - the weight loss can feel out of control at times. Just trying my best to eat clean and eat lots of healthy proteins and fats. Hope everyone else's journey's are going well. x -
Found these high protein low carb snacks at my local gas station. All where absolutely delicious. First the puffs. Oh i miss chips and this fills the gap. 130 cal, 3G carbs, 18G protein 1 gram sugar. quest peanut butter cups. Tasted amazing. similar to a reeses, 190 calories 1G Net carbs 11 gram protein, no sugar poptart thing, Was alot softer than a real poptart, but it was still very very good. 180 calories 5G Net Carbs and 20 grams of protein.

I am Irish and I'm afraid alcohol is baked into my culture. I have drunk some wine most weekends since 6 weeks after I had my sleeve last November when my (Irish!) surgeon and nutritionist permitted it. Yes I do get a hit much quicker than I used to, especially if I haven't eaten much beforehand, and yes, it wears off much quicker too. I do count the calories and I only do it at weekends. It has probably slowed my weight loss but I'm accepting that. I totally get that mightn't be acceptable to other people. But IMO it hasn't held me back *that* much.

Had my last dietitian appointment today. Its weird that it was my last of any type of appointment until my actual surgery date. He just went over my 2 week pre-op diet. They had never mentioned a calorie limit in any of the classes, so I was surpised to find out that they want me to only have up to 800 calories per day for the 2 weeks. Mostly they expect this to happen because of the limited food and low carbs. I was planning on eating cream soups though, strained like they allow on their list but he said to be careful of carbs and to not go over the calorie limit. I think I'm going to have a tougher time then I thought. I have to just keep reminding myself that its temporary -
I agree on the not worth the calories anymore statement. Everything I eat or drink, I say to myself "is it worth it" sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. It's a balance of where I am for the day on my calories/macros and if I really want whatever I am about to eat or drink. Everything is justified by calories now.

Yea it’s not the same for me either. I used to drink rum and Coke Zero so I have tried rum and crystal light but it didn’t taste very good so I think I’m just not able to drink it fast enough to get a buzz. I have since tried the pineapple flavored one and I can get a slight buzz on that but like you it doesn’t last long and it’s of course higher in calories. It sorta not worth it anymore.

I drank this weekend for the first time since surgery. I never really drank much before surgery, but maybe a few times a year. I am about 4.5 post-op and it didn't kill me. Or make me sick. I even stayed in my calorie range. I didn't plan on drinking but it was my birthday and I was thrown a surprise Birthday party so I decided to try it out. Worse case, sick at my own party. I was bought a shot of fireball. (My favorite but ALL sugar) I drank and 1/3 of it rather than the entire shot and then waited to see what would happen. Nothing, so I drank another 1/3 waited a few and then the last of the shot. Then.... was I buzzed? I don't even know, I felt buzzed but off of 1/1.5 oz? I know they say it hits you faster but I am still not even sure what it was. It felt different, but still buzzed. Lasted about 10 minutes. LAME..haha So I ended up having a total of 4 shots all night, buzzed for sure at the end of the night but again. It went away FAST. Like 30 minutes later I was sober. I woke up in the middle of the night with a headache, probably dehydrated. Drank a bottle of water with some Tylenol and went back to sleep. Next day, perfectly fine and back to my protein rich days. I doubt I will drink again for awhile. But I enjoyed my Birthday, guilt free without any issues.

Starting my liquid (liver shrinking) diet tomorrow
LookingForward22 replied to LookingForward22's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for those suggestions. I will look into the ones I can have (I think V8 splash is ok post op, but not pre-op). I haven’t had luck with the sugar free jello - the aspartame upsets my stomach. I’m trying simply delish jello to see how I tolerate that. So far erythritol doesn’t seem to bother me in other things I’ve tried but I’m not sure about the stevia. I guess I’ll see in a few days. Thankfully I’m allowed broth - that is my go to when I don’t feel well. I imagine I will be reaching for the bouillon cubes to make a cup of broth both to help with my fluid intake and to satisfy my craving for something savory - because everything else I’m allowed is rather sweet. I have yet to find a sugar free Popsicle that doesn’t have aspartame in it - which is my issue I think. I’m trying to freeze some different zero calorie drinks to see if maybe being super cold and very small quantities is more tolerable. When I hit the purée stage I’m going to try to blend some fruit into popsicles - but pre-op I am not allowed to do that. I’m sure I’m over thinking and worrying about things needlessly… but I very much appreciate your suggestions. I’m going to check out the V8 splash and ocean spray to see which flavors might work. -
Starting my liquid (liver shrinking) diet tomorrow
IrishKatieKat replied to LookingForward22's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Walmart has sugar free popsicles that you can bite, unless you have sensitive teeth. Ocean Spray has 5 calorie juices, V8 splash diet isn't bad, sugar free jello from the cold case so you can chew. Sounds horrible, but I also during that time got a pack of bouillon cubes because I want allowed broth unless it was protein added. I would lick the cube when I would get cravings. The cube lasted my entire liquid diet, so I didn't do it often. Good luck. Sent from my SM-G973U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Gonna make sure I follow the rules
SkinnyMingo1408 replied to Candigrl1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Depends on the food but I've had that "eat too fast" feeling. It's only caused me to throw up 2x but it was enough. I chew slowly now and really try to pay attention to what I'm eating. I have found in group settings it's just better for me to eat beforehand otherwise I get caught up in the conversation and tend to eat or drink too fast. Heck I made myself sick drinking water because I drank it so fast that I was in in pain about 4 weeks post op. It was a family dinner. I ended up excusing myself from the table and went to the bathroom and threw up the excess water. Hated that but felt better afterwards. Now I'm very cautious and the only sweets I've had is the low carb/ low calorie ice cream. 2/3 a cup at a time and spread out. A pint is taking forever and that used to be a serving for me! -
3 Month Stall?
bestdecisionmade replied to Sunshine Princess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It seems that weight loss stalls are common; though I've been very fortunate to not have one (so far, at least) At the risk of offending you with another pertinent question: are you tracking calories as well as protein? I've lost over 70lb in 4 months - and I attribute that to minimum of 80g protein and minimum 1000 calories each day. -
Im 3 months post op currently and I was more or less doing what your doing. I wasnt getting enough calories intake and I became weakish. I increased my protein and fluids which I initially found hard to do but things are leveling off for me. I was told today to not eat more than a cup of food. Currently I can only get somewhere between 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup so I still have a way to go lol.

If you weigh/measure the food before you start then weigh/measure it when you finish you can figure out how much you ate. You may not be eating enough if you are really eating 2/3 bites and that's it. If you are not eating your body will go into starvation mode and store everything rather than burning it. Same with the protein, you need to hit that goal so you can nourish your body and it doesn't starve. Maybe try prepping a few days of meals at a time so you don't have to keep measuring your foods, you will just know what it is and can reuse the data. It may make it less cumbersome for you that way? It really is amazing how people "think" they are eating in comparison to how they are actually eating. Tracking is key here, even just until you get the hang of it. Once I decided to have WLS I had my first dietician apt and at that moment started tracking without any change. I was disgusted to see how many calories and fat I was eating in a day. Wondering why I am so fat when I don't really eat that much. I was also one of those "eat 3000 calories once a day" type of people rather than 3 balanced meals. All of these things effect weight loss and/or gain. But when it really comes down to it, it is the calorie deficit that forces weight loss.

Seems strange. What did your nutritionist say? Are you tracking your food, know exactly how many calories you are taking in? Three months out, why are you only getting 30g of protein a day? How is your fluid intake? My plan allows me all foods also. My dietician stresses a balanced diet with some thing in moderation. Always focus on protein and veggies first and then add some carbs if I can. I track every single thing including fluids to make sure I am staying within my allowed calories/macros and hitting my goals.

I eat a few bites of noodles every once in a while. I might have to check these out. I think right now I don't eat them enough to matter about the calories. haha Everything works for every one differently. You do you, if it works for you fantastic!

I used to eat lots of these products before surgery, especially the noodle and rice types. They fill you up and have very few calories. I have some ready in stock for when I can eat more than my protein and vegetables. I also found some dried protein pasta this week. Enjoy
