    Bypass

    Me
  2. Hey loves :1007_hearts:

I had my sleeve conversion to a bypass on August 29th and that week went by super fast! I was focusing on liquids as well as getting the house in order. We have my aunts wedding coming up so we've been busy planning that as well.

The day before my surgery we had a big sweet sixteen birthday for my cousin and the food that was served was a devil! I passed it like it was nothing. Big thanks to my fiance for sticking with me on the liquid diet.

OK so day of surgery my check in time was 9:30 AM. I got called in to do all the pre-work and then wheeled to the OR at 11:30 AM. When I tell you Mayo is the best place for medical care, it is THE BEST! I was in surgery for 4 hours and stayed in the recovery room for 2 hours. I was soooo worried about my fiance but thanks to the tracking of each patient he was able to track me. It took forever for them to find me a room, which was around 7:00 PM. They actually put me on the respiratory floor. My pain was horrible!! My belly area hurt so bad! It took awhile for the nurses to  accommodate to what I needed because they weren't use to bariatric patients on their floor. The nurse I had was sooooo sweet. I will never forget her! She asked if I can stay another night LOL. My fiance actually couldn't stay the night with me....so he stayed with me for maybe an hour and half and drove off to care for our 3 dogs. I slept maybe until midnight and started to get uncomfortable. That is when I started to walk around the hall. I still had the catheter and the IV hooked up. Got maybe 3 heparin shots. My gas pains were horrible the whole night..I was scared to push anything out.  My fiance arrived around 8 AM and I had my first diluted juice. My surgeon came to visit and said everything was perfect and I was such a perfect candidate for my situation. He is very excited to see the future of my bypass LOL.

I was able to drink 1/2 a liter and was finally discharged around 2:30 PM. The drive home was long because we had to stop at the pharmacy for my pain meds. It was about an hour and 20 minute drive.

Here I am today 5 day post-op, was able to walk around the store but did get some belly pains. Had some miso soup which was delicious.

Hell9 all new to the group, scheduled surgery is September 15,the initially wanted the sleeve, but I've been having issues with Gerd so decided to switch to bypass, just started2 week post-op diet ,its hard 2 protien shakes a day and 3 oz protien, meat, salads, ect and snack if i get hungry which i do uugh but i got this i can do it
  5. Hi everyone, I had my first appointment yesterday with the hospital and I will be having my pre op tests around December time, my surgery will be early next year ! Exciting! The only thing that worries me is loosing my hair! I know it grows back but I don't want to loose it full stop ! It terrifies me , my hair is the only thing I truly like about myself, are you more likely to loose hair with the bypass over the sleeve? Is there anyone who has been lucky and hasn't lost any hair ?

    September surgery buddies!!

I think we all have this fear. I know I do. We're all here because we've repeatedly failed at other weight loss attempts. Here's the thing: It's easy to compare WLS to a forced restrictive diet, but it's a lot more than that. Both Sleeve and Bypass actually change a lot more about your metabolic processes. Here's a quote from the ASMBS: The important takeaway is that your sleeve is not just restricting what you can eat, it's fundamentally changing the way your digestive system works. It's a very effective tool, but you still have to eat right and exercise to be successful. The way I think about it may be a bit simplistic, but I compare it to digging a hole. Can I dig a hole with my bare hands? I suppose I could, but it's going to take a long time and especially if I need it to be a big hole, It may simply be too much for me. Give me a shovel and now I have a tool specifically designed to dig holes. I will still have to put in a good bit of effort to dig that hole, but the shovel will help me be successful. WLS is the same thing. I've been trying to "dig holes" with my bare hands. Now I'm going to be given a shiny new shovel.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

I just realized that this is old so the OP probably already had their surgery but for others….I had sleeve and while I am very happy I decided to do it and content-ish with my loss, I did not lose as much as I had hoped and I will always wonder if I would’ve lose more with bypass. I definitely wouldn’t let a few pounds be the only decision making factor but on a pro con list that could definitely be one bullet point.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

I’m so sorry i know how horrible it is. I had the VSG October last year, lost all the weight but by my 4th month i couldn’t take the pain from GERD Dr had me on so many medications for it but nothing worked. I am now a week post conversion to Bypass no Gerd anymore. Best decision ever. I hope you can convert soon 🥰

    Revision to bypass

Hi, i had the sleeve on October 6 last year, i lost all the weight and more. Unfortunately my Gerd was so severe i had to convert to bypass. I converted August 23rd so far so good. From what i know there is not a non surgical way to convert to bypass or to get a sleeve revision. I have a friend who had the sleeve and for following certain life style changes gained all the weight back she than got the bypass. She lost all the weight and has kept most of it off, she does struggle a lot and wishes she was more mentally prepare, she believes she wasn’t mentally prepare to make some changes and that has affected her progress both times. So i would say talk to your Dr and see what the best option for you is. Best of luck 🥰

    Bravo pH study

I don’t have any symptoms of silent reflux. I just told my doctor I was leaning towards getting the sleeve and he said I should get that done to make sure I don’t have it because if I do the bypass would be better. I have to have an endoscopy anyways & he said they just place a capsule in my esophagus while they’re already in there & it’s simple but I’ve read some posts where people say the capsule is really uncomfortable until it falls off and I don’t know if I can handle that feeling in my throat. Are you talking about the silent reflux that can cause cancer? I haven’t heard that..

    Pause in the program

Wow that's awful! Maybe try a different doctor/hospital. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but when I scheduled my surgery for revision to bypass, I made my first appointment in June 2021 right in the middle of Covid, and my surgery was November 2021. Some additional precautions were taken in terms of visitors, etc. but otherwise went off without a hitch.
  13. Sleeve: Maybe 2 days or so Bypass: No gas pain at all
  14. Haven't updated this thing in a while. It's just to keep me accountable and I know others can read this so feel free to chime in. I'm officially almost entering my 7th month of post op life from my gastric bypass. I feel so much better and I've lost over 100 lbs but there are days I still feel like it won't all really matter at all until I am stick skinny (which wouldn't be possible without plastics and even then I don't think so). I hate that I think that way - it makes it hard to be happy for myself and then that feeds into not meeting my goals.

I was in a weight loss rut for a while there - like the whole month of August basically was me just gaining and losing the same 4 lbs. I figured it was just a weight loss stall part of the process because I hear there's a big stall 6 months out. I also was macro and calorie counting but I was drinking more alcohol than I ever have since surgery. I think that contributed to it immensely. Just to be clear I wasn't drinking out of transfer addiction - just going to more social events and dinners because my life has gotten so incredibly busy. It's amazing because I have the confidence to go out and be social now but it makes it harder to navigate the strict calorie limits and hydration goals when you're always hanging out with people.

Anyway, I really put a lot of thought into calories the past two weeks and stopped drinking too. I finally broke my stall. I went from 240 to 236 and it seems to be sticking. I'm at this weird part in the surgery journey where the honeymoon is over. I no longer get food stuck in my esophagus on the regular but I have noticed I am starting to feel nauseous after eating (probably because I don't have the limitation of the food getting stuck) so I don't realize how much my body is actually okay with.

So now I'm at this point where I'm figuring out how much of different types of foods I can really eat without making myself nauseous. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. I'm usually good around 1/2 a cup of carbs and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables. Protein is always different. Sometimes I can eat it no problem, others it's one of the only foods that still get "stuck". I try not to go crazy counting calories because I have a history of eating disorders. I mainly try to stay under 1300 calories. My BMR is around 1900 right now. Instead of counting every single morsel, I make sure I eat more in the beginning of the day so I don't snack at night and I weigh my food if it's a fat or carb.

I'd really like to add more exercise back into the equation but I've been on my *ss for the past 2 weeks because I sprained my tailbone. It's finally better so I'm going to try doing a mile run and a 2 mile walk at least 3 times a week to start out. Weathers also clearing up for outdoor runs and I'd like to get my sweat on anyway.

But anyway, I feel like I'm at this point of my surgery journey that doesn't get talking about a lot. The pre op and right after surgery phases are talked about most but the most important part seems to be what happens after all the cool perks start dying down? Hunger comes back, or you're able to increase portions, introduce foods back, etc. I'd love to talk to others about this point just for support. I know it just comes down to tracking and movement but sometimes it does feel like you're doing it all and those numbers won't budge (they don't go up, but they don't go down). For me it's best not to obsess over the number. I can get really depressed checking my weight everyday. I'm down to checking about 3 times a month now.

Not sure what else I'm trying to say here. Just want to keep going. My first goal weight was 220 that I set for myself. I'm about 15 lbs away from it. I think once I hit 220 and maintain it for 2 months I'll set a new goal weight for 200 lbs. I think at that point I'll be ready for plastics. I'd love to have my arms tightened, my stomach skin removed and my boobs lifted. Everything else I can take or leave haha

    August surgery buddies!

Hi folks, I'm new to this site. Gastric bypass on 8/23, doing really well so far. Gas pain really sucked but I'm past that, I'm up to the pureed stage. So far my pouch has tolerated 4 oz of pureed food quite well, no pain or obvious fullness so far. And I'm already able to drink lots of water, easily getting 100+ oz in, plus 40 oz of herbal tea with no problems. Seems strange! And knocking protein out of the park, easily hitting 100 g a day. I emailed my ND to get his feedback to see if that was too much. I expected more restriction at this point. How's everyone else feeling restriction wise?

I agree but I had a revision to Gastric Bypass because of horrible complications from a VBG in 2004. I was 228. I am now 170. Moderation

    Sugar intake question

I'm several years out, but I can handle sugar just fine (unfortunately). Most restrictions are temporary - at some point, you'll be able to eat most (if not all) things, just in smaller portion sizes. P.S. about 30% of bypassers dump. Sleevers can also dump, but it's not nearly as common. But even dumpers can handle at least *some* sugar.

    August surgery buddies!

Hi, I had bypass 8/23. Day of surgery I was 273 then gained 3lbs during hospital stay. I am 7 days post op and I am 271. I am on liquid diet and following it very strict. Why am I not losing? Clothes feel the same and pictures look the same.
  21. Makes me feel a bit better now and I will still talk to the surgeon about it too. Thing about my dentist, it's like they cancel my appointment every time I have one. I've only seen them twice since I started going there and that was back in July or August of last year. I had an appointment in November and December and they both got canceled. Then they rescheduled it for january this year...canceled. scheduled for Feb, then March. Didn't cancel the appointment in April. Next appointment was in July canceled, then my appointment was August 8th and they canceled that too. My next appointment is at the end of next month. I know I should switch dentists, but no one in my area accepts my insurance. But whenever I do get in there, I will also make sure to let them know that I'm going to be getting wls and I care about my teeth. I already have weakened enamel on my top front teeth so that does scare me a bit. They were supposed to put something on them to help them and they haven't yet. And im always going to tell people, when I announce someday that I had wls, that it isn't the easy way out. I know we have to put in like 95% of the work and it does the rest. People who say it's the easy way out are super clueless.
  22. I haven't really heard about losing teeth (that i can recall, anyway), but I'd read about dental issues (i.e., decay) after gastric bypass. I asked my dentist about it around the time I had surgery seven years ago. He said although he'd read about it in the professional literature, he'd never seen any of this in his patients who'd had WLS. On top of that, I rarely see any posts about people experiencing dental issues either here on BP or on other WLS sites. So my take on this is, although it can happen, it's pretty rare. My dentist said decay issues (with or without WLS) are usually due to too much acid in the mouth, which can happen with excessive vomiting or acid from GERD. I rarely vomit or have issues with reflux anymore (although I did have GERD prior to WLS), but because of my concern, he wrote me a prescription for a super-fluoridated toothpaste that I use before I go to bed. He also puts a fluoride varnish on my teeth every six months. He said those two things should go a long way toward preventing any damage. To be honest, I think he did this more to placate me than anything else because I was so freaked out about it, because I have regular dental appts and take good care of my teeth - so it's likely I never would have had any issues anyway. so long way of saying - this doesn't seem to be a common issue - and if you're worried about it, have a chat with your dentist (oh -- and keep on top of dental appts, too!)
  23. I don't think it's nonsense. If you Google "Dental issues after Gastric Bypass" there's a lot of information about it. I would however, take the Tik Tok posts with a grain of salt, and take the documented studies seriously.
  24. Hi guys, So lately I've been seeing posts on tik tok and comments on there about people losing their teeth sometime after gastric bypass. That scares me a bit, but not stopping me from getting the tool. They all say they take their vitamins everyday. What could be causing them to lose their teeth? Is there something I can do to help prevent that? The other question is that I know this isn't the easy way out, it's just that everyone else who isn't in our situation always says it is the easy way out and they will argue and argue with you about it saying that it is. It's so annoying, they don't understand that its just like losing weight normally except you just have a tool to help keep you on track and if you mess up, you pay for it. That's like basically the only difference. Why do you think people are so against it? Besides the fact that it's super scary. If people wanted the surgery, it's because they need the help. Plus going in for weigh ins, nutritionist and all that, helps keep you motivated. People are weird.
  25. Congratulations on starting this journey!! My mom was from the dayton area - miamisburg (go Vikings!) I am 53 yrs old, and had gastric bypass July 18. I'm doing well. My husband is hopeful for his surgery in December of this year. I think once you decide on having weight loss surgery, your mindset changes. It was so much easier to follow the plan laid out for me once my "eye was on the prize." Good luck to you!
