shakes, shakes and more shakes!!
joycie replied to purple3797's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have used the chocolate and vanilla with milk. I have used the chicken soup. I have used the unflavored in blended soup to increase the protein content. I like them. Just be careful when adding them to hot liquids because they will clump. -
Finally have a date, 06/05/12! Now it is beginning to feel so real. Have a lot of loose ends to tie up (no pun intended). This is a big step in the right direction - onward and upward! I'm so glad to have this forum for reference. Need to find some protein liquids I can tolerate.

Very sick of it already. How to get throught it?!?!? liquids and nonstarchy vegetables. Going to have to get to the store for some sugar free popsicles and Jello. Thank goodness I at least have my Protein shakes.

Hello. Can you guys please post a typical day of eating for you? I am about 7 weeks out. I barely get 55 grams of Protein in. I am stuffed every time I eat. I honestly don't have much room for veggies. I have greenbeans or broccoli....very very very little with my dinner. I can't stand V8 juice. I'm just curious how you get the veggies in and how much you can typically eat at a meal. Thanks!

People are already starting to talk and I haven't had surgery yet!
Mrs. Reid posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on my pre-op diet which means drinking Protein shakes at work. I am already getting questions about what I am doing. I say I am doing the prep work for a major change in my life. They ask me what the change is and I tell them I am about to start a medically supervised weight loss program. Already I am hearing how drinking Protein Shakes won't do me any good in the long run...too much protein is bad for my kidneys..do I really trust this doctor who is running this program....the key to losing weight is easy: move more/eat less....maybe these people are just out to make money off me.... Remember that I work in a food coop and most of the people I work with have never been overweight in their lives and belive that juicing a bunch of dandelion leaves 5 times a day is an appropriate treatment for hypertension. It's this bad now, I wonder what is going to happen once I come bact to work after my surgery! -
Sliders aren't necessarily high calories/fat/carbs, but are simply foods that go through our stomachs easily and with little restriction. Many of the junk foods that we should avoid fall into that category - ice cream, chips, twinkies, crackers and the like. But many low calorie/high nutrition foods can also be sliders - peppers, onions, spinach, avocado (ok, not so low cal, but good nutrition when you can afford it), tomatoes and the like tend to go through me fairly easily (can you tell that I just made a salad?) and when added to some meat can increase the volume consumed with little caloric impact but a good addition to the daily nutrition. I would often have mixed meat and veg meals - stews, stir fries, salads, chili and the like once my Protein intake was fairly reliable and I could back away a bit from the "protein first" rule. "Slider" is a bit like color - it is neither good nor bad, it just is. Green leafy vegetables are generally good, while green fuzzy meat is not. The same with sliders, and that can be used to your advantage as you progress through this process - benefit from the good sliders while avoiding the crap sliders. The greek yogurt that is often recommended is a great slider for getting in additional protein when meats and other firm Proteins are too restricted.

?CALORIES? Will they be the death of me?
janinemaire replied to Luv4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You lost 56 pounds in three month, that is really good. I'm 8 months out and lost 75 pounds, with eating around 850 calories. I think if I was able to increase my calories maybe I would loss faster. I don't think their is an right answer but whatever your doing seems to be working. Are you still losing? How many carbs do you have in a day? Do you eat your protein first? I sometimes get hungry around meal times but fill up quickly, I personally like it when I feel hungry. I was also more hungry until I hit 5 months now not so much. If you don't keep a food journal maybe start too, and see if their is any patterns on the journal that you should change. I feel after the surgery we are all learning new ways to eat and as the months pass we change certain things. Good luck, Janine -
suggestions on preop shakes
Sojourner replied to carlak's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will likely need to try several different brands to find one or more that you will like. That's important, as shakes will. Be a part of your life fow awhile. My surgeon advised to only use shakes which have 100% whey isolate Protein, which is considered to be a complete source of protein for bariatric patients. I like GNC products, but there are many others to choose from. I'm certain that other "vets" will chime in with their favorites. Best wishes for a successful journey... -
Thank you, keep up the hard work, you'll do great. I did not experience much hair loss, talk to your nutritionist about increasing your protein. Just a thought:)

I had my surgery June of 2015 - so I'm in your range. I'm in maintenance and eat 1200-1400 kcal a day. I malabsorb Protein, so I make a double Protein shake every morning and sip on it all day. So that's like 200-300 calories right there, depending on what I put in it. Then I usually eat around 200 kcal for Breakfast, around 300 or so for lunch and dinner. I often have a snack in the evening, too - like yogurt. If I didn't do the protein shake, I'd probably have a couple of low-calorie Snacks during the day, like a hard-boiled egg or one of those Fit & Light Greek yogurts. I'm not a gym rat, but I try to get to the gym 2-3 times a week (mostly strength-training and/or Water aerobics). I also go to a yoga class 1-2x a week.

Is Betaine anhydrous in protein powder ok?
Biscuit0587 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im not getting my sleeve done until august but I've been trying some protien powders. I just noticed the Body Fortress Isolate Protein powder contains betaine anhydrous. Is this a bad thing?? -
I started milky protein shakes and yogurt by day 6. Just take it slow and stop if you are feeling ill. I personally had a heck of a time with the clear stage. Once I started drinking regular protein shakes, the food dreaming waned a bit. Good luck!!

Im on the losers bench now.....yayyyyy
PorkChopExpress replied to ppressey24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You took the step over that line, that's the biggest move. Now it'll be a lot of little moves that add up to weight loss I had mine done on Sept 23rd, I'm almost two weeks out now and starting on the mushy foods (thank goodness). After nearly a month of nothing but liquids, I was going nuts. Be prepared for your mind to take you for a ride, because you just robbed it of a lot of its comfort and removed a coping mechanism from your toolbox. There will be a mourning period, but don't sweat it. It's getting easier for me, and everyone who's been there says it passes, and you come out stronger. But this thing is at least as mental/emotional as it is physical. Keep walking, every day walking...get your pedometer going so you can track it. It'll help get the gas out, and it'll help you heal better. Really focus on that Protein, try hard to meet those goals because it really helps speed healing if you're getting enough. Good luck! -
eating here and there at 5 months out
brandnewme2013 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I'm 5 months out and down 110lbs, but lately I've been eating little things here and there that for the first 4 1/2 months I was afraid to touch. Now granted it's not no where near what I use to eat but its just the fact that I'm allowing myself this one little bite here and one little bite there. I logged my food and work out 5 times a week but the point is that I just want to continue to learn self control and willpower. Am I being to hard on myself? I mean I'm not pigging out but I feel like a pig afterwards. Anyways I just wanted to share that to see if its just me? And surly this process is now 100% easy right? I feel like its been easy up until now when I have my options. Can anyone else relate? What about people further out the me? hw 338 sw 318 (5/20/13) cw 210 -
I have a desk job n work 8-4:30, here's what I've been doing: Breakfast I start shortly after I start work about 8:15-30 and I usually have 6oz of the chobani Greek yogurt it takes me about 45 min to an hr to finish it. Then I have lunch at 11:30 but usually don't start eating till closer to noon so far I'm still on soft food n I'm lazy to prepare so I've been eating tuna n 4 crackers I eat about 2oz of tuna. I like tuna so I'm not tired of it yet. Then about 2or 3pm I have a snack like cottage cheese doubles 100 calories or string cheese. N dinner I have about 2oz of chicken in the can, or lentils, or ground turkey I still haven't gotten tired of soft foods yet I know there r more options but this is what's easier for me

April 6 surgeries
bananabellyaches replied to Lucilla's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was sleeved April 4th & today is the first day I could have soft food. This morning tried 2 bites of cottage cheese & one bite of yogurt. Stomach made a lot of noises - but feel ok. First 2 weeks was Clear Liquids, 3rd week was liquids that run easily thru a strainer. I made homemade black bean Soup & put it thru the blender. Hands down best thing I've tried besides Campbell's soup on the go (not allowed tomato soup). Also, tried a frozen Greek yogurt bar last night & had no problems. Planning on trying a few bites of egg for lunch. Premier Protein chocolate shakes are the only ones I'm interested in now. Liked the strawberry & vanilla first 2 weeks, but now I'm sick of them. All other Protein Shakes just turn me off now. Shakes I used to drink regularly before surgery now are hard to get down. I do drink a whey "Nectar" drink in tropical flavor with my powdered bariatric Vitamins in it & it's ok for 24g of protein. I add spoonful of Isopure non- flavored protein to my soup & coffee (mix it w/bit Water first). G2 & Powerade zero taste delicious to me right now. So I drink quite a few ice cold drinks & my Fluid intake is very good. MyraLax is a must for me every day too. Painful spot next to my belly button that burns with a sharp pain! Drives me nuts cause I'm wanting to physically do so many things. Doc's office said its where they put extra stitch to prevent hernias. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Totally freaked out now!!!
jrg1979 replied to sylhaven's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This "mini bypass" reminds me of the gastric sleeve. Although it may be a great surgery and even may have been a better choice for me, it is just too new and too scary. I am not willing to have my insides rerouted and/or completely removed until I know for sure what the long term effects will be. The lapband may indeed have to be converted to something else 10 years down the road. I sleep better at night knowing I will have that option when the time comes, since it is reversible! -
Just started my liquid diet today - Surgury July 22nd
losingitat41 replied to gouryella's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started mine today too and my surgery is the 22nd! It wasnt so bad. I am allowed 5 optifast shakes and 2 protein shakes from other protein powder. I did them every 2 hours. and drank a TON of water. Today was not so bad. I am curious to see how tmw goes. I am okay with just doing the shakes b/c i had "last supper" syndrome the last 3 weeks and gained 4 lbs. I think i ate everything i wanted so i feel like this is pay back for eating all of that!
